What grades do I need?

I don't have a portfolio! When you read or hear 'portfolio', you may assume we need to see a traditional leather file full of sketches or paintings, but that's simply not the case.

Entry grades vary for each of the qualifications we offer. In addition to the expected entry grades, you are asked to bring examples of your own artwork/portfolio to an interview. Interview and portfolio advice is available on page 77.

Please be assured we expect your portfolio to be as individual as you are and can be in many forms physical or digital - research, blogs, animation, screen prints, sketches or photographs... read more on page 77.

All staff within the Student Services Team are knowledgeable, experienced and professional staff committed to providing all students with high quality support on a wide range of issues and topics. This helps our students maximise their experience and achieve their full potential. Starting a new course can often mean a big change in any student’s life. To help, all students have access to a Student Support Advisor who can help with any questions and concerns they may have, which may include: • • • • •

travelling to the School childcare additional learning support financial difficulties personal health difficulties

If we are unable to answer a student query we will support students by contacting external support services ensuring students have access to the most relevant and specific support or guidance. We also arrange visits from external agencies to deliver workshops or offer drop in sessions on a range of issues affecting young people.

We are committed to: • providing a safe environment for young people to learn • identifying young people who are likely to experience significant harm and taking appropriate action to keep such young people safe, both at home and at the School.

In addition to this, the Student Services Team offers: • free on-site confidential counselling services • disability support tailored to individual needs • finance and funding advice and guidance to help with on course costs such as printing or art materials, travel expenses and food vouchers for our Art Café • childcare (if students think they need assistance we would encourage them to contact us as soon as possible before the start of the course)

It is quick and easy to contact Student Services and we are open throughout the year during office hours. Please call 01642 856135 or email: student.services@northernart.ac.uk or disability@northernart.ac.uk (for any disability related enquiries).

What happens next? IN T E RV I E W Interviews normally start in October and take place throughout the year. However we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Your interview is fairly informal and will usually be with a staff member teaching on the course. Interviews take place in a relaxed environment and are designed to guide you on the most suitable route. We ask you to bring some examples of your own work. The most important thing about this interview is to just be yourself and not to worry. The idea behind your interview is to show us the kind of things you are interested in, for us to see how passionately you talk about your work and to help us make sure we find the best course to suit you

PORT FOL I O A DV IC E A portfolio, which can be in many forms - physical or digital, is individual to every student and it is difficult to say exactly what it should consist of. Everyone will have individual styles and will have been taught to produce work in different ways. We encourage you to bring anything that you feel will help support your application to The Northern School of Art.

WO RRIE D ABO UT YO UR PO RTFO LIO? If you are concerned about your portfolio or worried there isn’t much work to show us, don’t panic. We would still encourage you to apply and attend the interview. If we feel that you should submit more work to us then we will request this from you before making a firm decision. If we feel that you may be better suited to an alternative course, we will provide appropriate advice and guidance - whether this is a course with us or elsewhere.

AFTE R THE INTE RVIE W If you are successful at interview, you will be offered a place. We will then keep in touch with you throughout the year until you enrol with us.

Work may include any of the following: • • • • • • •

drawings paintings sketchbook work digital design work photographs short video clips animations

• • • • • •
