SOL CCA Hero
A Note from Our Founder When we founded Children’s Cancer Association 23 years ago after the death of my oldest daughter Alexandra, we knew first hand that hospitalized kids needed more than medicine. We set out to change the conversation in children’s healthcare at a time when no one else was talking about JOY in the same breath as pediatric cancer. Since then, CCA’s trailblazing programs have leveraged music, nature, friendship, and resources to transform moments of pain, isolation, and fear for hundreds of thousands of children and teens with serious illness. CCA is the only organization of its kind positioning JOY as best practice in children’s hospitals across the nation. After 23 years, we think we’re on to something. Yet pediatric cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children in the US. So, in FY18 we decided that our strategic goals over the next five years must be bigger. It is no longer enough to transform a moment – we must transform the entire system. That is why, right now: •
CCA is investing in game-changing clinical trials, along with our partners at Legacy Research Institute and Randall Children’s Hospital, assessing bedside music and how it can positively impact a seriously-ill child’s emotional well-being
•
CCA is developing a proprietary Joy Scale™ to clinically assess the measurable indicators of joy-based programs for critically ill children and young adults
•
We’re piloting new, immersive outdoor adventure programs in partnership with outdoor experts at REI and medical wilderness professionals designed specifically to instill CCA teens with a sense of resilience, optimism, and future orientation
•
We’ve created CCA’s Young Adult Alliance, connecting teens facing serious illness on their own terms, and providing a sense of shared empowerment, purposefulness, and giving back
With your generous support, we are doubling down on our innovation methodology, emergent technology, assessing our program impact, listening to our stakeholders, and asking more questions than ever before. I have never been more confident that our strategic investments are positioning CCA to transform pediatric healthcare. At CCA, we see a world where hospitalized kids are literally prescribed JOY. Because JOY is what we are made of. Thank you for standing beside us. In Joy,
REGINA ELLIS Founder and Chief Joy Officer Children’s Cancer Association

In FY18, CCA continued to make sustaining investments in programs, staffing, and benefits while carefully managing expenses and maintaining a healthy primary reserve ratio. I am especially proud to report our 17th consecutive clean audit, a result of thorough work and attention to detail by the entire CCA team, finance staff, and senior management. These efforts also led to continued recognition for best practices in financial transparency, employee engagement, creativity, and mission delivery from esteemed organizations such as GuideStar, BBB, and Charity Navigator.

CCA is a trusted organization that has been recognized for over 20 years as an excellent steward of financial resources. A copy of our latest financial statement is available at JoyRx.org/About/Financials. The FY18 independent audit, which was performed by Gary McGee & Co. LLP, resulted in our 17th year of unqualified (A+) independent audit reports. Of those, this is also our 7th consecutive year where no material weaknesses were identified. 4 | We Prescribe Joy

Innovation Accelerator In June 2017, CCA was selected by NYC-based Bionic as their first-ever pro bono partner. Working with the company’s entrepreneurs-in-residence, a cross-functional team at CCA on-boarded a new growth operating system, designed to embed start up thinking and entrepreneurial principles across our programs, teams, and capabilities.

SEED 1 PROGRAMMATIC STAKEHOLDERS: TEENS OUTCOME: CCA’s Young Adult Alliance (YAA) •
The YAA connects seriously ill teens ages 1321 with their peers, on their own terms, and provides a shared sense of purposefulness and giving back
•
The group meets with CCA staff quarterly, generating rich insights to help address the needs of this growing and underserved demographic
•
YAA members are now helping us pilot new programs, like NatureRx™, a series of immersive outdoor experiences designed to instill teens in treatment with resilience, optimism, and future orientation
•
The group is also planning a moderated round table with local hospital executives to help improve the in-hospital experience for their age group
CCA’s Innovation Accelerator will be featured in New to Big: How Companies Can Create Like Entrepreneurs, Invest Like VCs, and Install a Permanent Operating System for Growth by Bionic Co-Founder and CEO, David Kidder and Bionic VP of Growth, Christina Wallace, to be published in March 2019.

Developing Clinical Efficacy Strategies As CCA works to position JOY as best practice in pediatric healthcare settings across the country, we are developing new guidelines and tools for clinicians caring for pediatric patients with life-threatening illness. These recommendations will be based on best available research, evidence, clinical studies, and our more than two decades of experience and expertise.
CLINICAL RESEARCH In a first of its kind collaboration, CCA, Randall Children’s Hospital, and Legacy Research Institute co-led a bold clinical trial exploring the impact of live music medicine on post-surgery pediatric patients to reduce pain and anxiety. The results were published in the journal Frontiers in Oncology in February 2018. Our second clinical trial, commenced in October 2018, assesses if bedside MyMusicRx® interactions can positively impact a seriously ill child’s emotional well-being and expand their care options as part of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.
INTRODUCING CCA'S JOY SCALE ™ The current study also introduces a newly developed proprietary Joy Scale tool, designed to assess the measurable indicators on the impact of joy-based programs for critically ill children and young adults.
THE MOOD SHIFT TOOL Our new MyMusicRx.org digital platform empowers hospitalized kids to shift, plan, and grow through music, with an online Mood Shift tool that lets them choose exclusive videos, games, and music lessons based on how they want to feel.

Music | MyMusicRx® Two decades ago CCA began delivering the healing power of music to children and teens facing cancer and other serious illness. Today, our bedside and MyMusicRx.org digital “music medicine” programs engage hospitalized kids of all ages and diagnoses, relieving stress, anxiety, and perception of pain. IN FY18, we invested in enhanced professional training to keep our local staff current in best practices for specialized units like the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and palliative services. We also launched MyMusicRx at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Tri-Cities, WA and added new units at Boston Children’s Hospital. WHAT'S NEXT: MyMusicRx began service delivery in June 2018 at St. David’s Children’s Hospital in Austin, TX. We also introduced the all new MyMusicRx.org, where seriously ill kids and teens are empowered to shift, plan, and grow – through music. Our newest clinical trial assesses if bedside music can positively impact a seriously ill child’s emotional wellbeing.

I worked closely with a 4 year old patient who sustained injuries from a car accident. They were very quiet, shy and hard to engage. James picked up on the patient's cues as he quietly played his guitar and provided several instruments for the child to choose from. The following week they were much more active and engaged. This is a great example of how MyMusicRx helps provide some normalcy to patients and families while in the hospital. T H ERES A M CCARTHY, M S , CCLS B OSTON C H I L DREN'S H OSPI TAL
Nature | Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin™ The Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin provides children and teens who are in treatment, along with their families, an extraordinary place to retreat, relax, and create oncein-a-lifetime memories outside of the hospital environment. Nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake, the Caring Cabin provides an essential health connection to nature and healing. IN FY18, our generous supporters donated nearly $4,000 worth of games, movies, art supplies, and outdoor activities to keep families entertained and give them plenty of opportunities to connect and enjoy the outdoors while at the Caring Cabin. WHAT'S NEXT: CCA’s NatureRx™ programming has expanded to include a pilot of immersive outdoor adventures designed specifically to instill seriously ill teens and young adults with a sense of optimism and future orientation.

Friendship | Chemo Pal® Mentor Program CCA’s award-winning Chemo Pal mentors play games, listen to music, share hobbies, or simply offer the comfort of companionship, relieving the loneliness and isolation experienced by children in treatment. A Chemo Pal mentor can also give parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, talk with doctors, or spend time with their other children. IN FY18, we implemented new, rigorous assessments to better understand the program’s positive impact on both families and mentors. We also improved case management and documentation practices to ensure the highest level of safety for 207 participating kids and teens at partner hospitals. Community experiences available to families and their Chemo Pals were increased by 44% over FY17. WHAT'S NEXT: We are offering a robust, new curriculum of monthly training opportunities based on ongoing assessment results. We are also implementing an updated monthly newsletter for our mentors.

Resources | Link CCA’s Link program takes the profound emotional and financial hardships of serious pediatric illness head on, engaging a network of caring people and organizations to provide families with essential needs assistance, special requests and wishes, holiday gift support, and funeral and bereavement support, building resilience during a difficult time. IN FY18, Link saw an 18% increase of in-kind goods and services donated from both businesses and individuals. As a result of this generosity, we were able to provide families with housing assistance, home repairs, medical equipment and adaptive technology, gift cards, new tires and car repairs, family getaways, musical instruments and lessons, and more. WHAT'S NEXT: Joy for the Holidays has been expanded for 2018, with gifting support now available to families of children newly diagnosed or unexpectedly admitted to the hospital. Community groups can also shop curated grocery lists for holiday meal box delivery to CCA families in need.

Community Outreach & Education CCA’s volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization: they mentor children, share their musical talents, staff community events, host toy drives, directly support families, and serve on our leadership boards. In return, our volunteers often find their own lives changed by the extraordinary spirit of the courageous kids and families we serve. IN FY18, CCA released the 5th edition of Kids’ Cancer Pages, our comprehensive national resource guide for families. Over 600 copies were distributed free of charge to pediatric hospitals in all 50 states. IN FY19, look for the latest edition of Local Family Support Pages, CCA’s resource guide for Portland area families with a seriously ill child or teen, distributed free of charge to our local pediatric hospital partners.
