A Note From Our Founder When I started the Children’s Cancer Association 20 years ago around my kitchen table I knew we were creating something extraordinary. We were parents, pioneers, and dreamers with a new vision for what pediatric cancer support services might look like. At a time when no one was talking about friendship, or music, or play in a hospital context, we set out to change the conversation and to fill a critical gap for families like mine and for children facing pediatric cancer and other serious illnesses. And we filled that gap beautifully - with joy. In this year’s Community Investment Report, 20 years in, we are pleased to report on the many ways that CCA has continued to change the conversation and to create transformative moments of joy for children, teens, and their families here in this community and beyond. Some of the incredible “Power of 20” milestones we’ve achieved together: CCA has been a labor of love for twenty

By blending mission impact with business leadership and an organizational focus on creativity and innovation, CCA has inspired $33.9M in charitable donations and has invested $30.7M into our community. And for the fifth year in a row, CCA has earned the highest rating, four stars, from Charity Navigator, the nation’s top evaluator of charities, placing us in the top five percent of charities nationwide. At CCA we are never ones to rest on our laurels. Our focus now is looking toward the future and the important work yet to be done, the conversations still to be changed. Our vision for the next 20 years is to ensure that JoyRx becomes the standard of care in pediatric healthcare settings across the country and around the world. We like to dream big and know we can accomplish this – together - by continuing to create and deliver innovative, results driven programs with measurable impacts to improve the quality of life for seriously ill children and teens everywhere. We hope that you will join us on this journey. Thank you believing Joy Matters and Music Heals. In Joy,

MyMusicRx
®
Twenty years ago CCA pioneered a one-of-a-kind pediatric “music medicine” program called MyMusicRx that lets kids choose the music experience that feels right to them. The in-hospital MyMusicRx program includes bedside sing-alongs led by trained music specialists, instrument and iPad lending from mobile music carts, and live concerts from national recording artists. MyMusicRx.org extends our bedside experience online and invites kids facing cancer and other serious illnesses to feel the music and feel better, by exploring exclusive artist greetings, concerts, music lessons, digital instruments, and games – anytime, anywhere. MyMusicRx digital programs are currently available in 19 pediatric hospitals across the country providing measurable benefits like relief from stress, depression, anxiety, and sleeplessness; better pain management, and improved mood and relaxation.

Last year we launched Bedstock: the world’s first and only in-bed music festival featuring music performed from bed for kids and teens who can’t leave theirs.
Emma loves music and playing the ukulele, but her interest grew even stronger once she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), when the MyMusicRx™ program entered her life. CCA’s MyMusicRx Specialists visited Emma regularly to sing and play music with her, and even recorded a music video for “Bedstock,” a unique online music festival that helps raise funding and awareness for the program. But even on days when Emma didn’t feel well enough to sing, she said MyMusicRx was just what she needed to lift her spirits.
“When I felt my worst, I still loved someone coming in and playing a song. It lifted me up when I was not doing so well.” Emma’s mom agreed, saying that MyMusicRx gave Emma a much-needed distraction from her illness. “It’s just a great diversion, because it got her mind on something she’d be doing every day: listening to music and making music, and so it normalizes being in the hospital.”

Chemo Pal Mentor Program ®
CCA’s award-winning Chemo Pal Mentor Program gives kids a caring, trusted, adult friend to look forward to during treatments, and someone in their corner when they need it most. A Chemo Pal mentor can also give parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, take a nap, talk with doctors, or spend time with other children. Chemo Pal mentors play games, listen to music, share hobbies, or simply offer the comfort of companionship, relieving the anxiety, loneliness, and isolation experienced by children in treatment. Chemo Pal matches spend about 4 hours per month together. The average match lasts 12 months, or for the duration of a child’s treatment.

“What an amazing place! Despite a little rain, there was still plenty of sun and memories made, and Fynn was so happy he could invite his cousins to come along too! :) Favorites were rowing boats on the lake, fishing at Town Lake, running down sand dunes, splashing in the ocean waves, playing air hockey and basketball, and so much more! We loved placing Fynn’s stone together as a family. We found the stone of our Chemo Pal’s previous buddy. Fynn never met him, but he knew that they both shared Ed, Chemo Pal to both the boys, and Fynn decided their stones should go together ” Kate Nackerud Fynn’s Mom
“Every family receives two of these rocks as a symbol of the cancer journey. One is placed on the grounds behind the cabin where it joins those of the children who have visited previously. To me, this garden of pediatric warriors is a very spiritual place... a true path of heroes.” Chris Thudium Graham’s Dad 13
Link CCA’s Link program takes the profound emotional and financial hardships of a pediatric cancer diagnosis head on, engaging a network of caring people and organizations to provide families with essential needs assistance and support. For example, bathroom renovations for wheelchair accessibility; gas cards, tires, and car repairs to safely transport families to medical treatments; new roofs, furnaces, and hot water heaters; holiday gift support; and special wishes not met by other organizations.

In 2013, Christopher was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, relapsing and entering hospice care in 2014. Wanting to fill Christopher’s days with as much joy as possible, his parents asked the Link program for a “reptile party”. So, we went to work right away to put together the perfect party. Much to Christopher’s delight, the House of Reptiles brought a variety of slithering friends. It’s not a party without dessert, and Christopher knew just what he wanted: a frog cake, of course!
“Thank you so much for setting up Christopher’s frog party. He loved his toy creatures and of course the visiting real creatures. The frog cake was a huge hit!” Robyn Johnson Christopher’s Mom

What’s Next for CCA? As we set out to ensure that JoyRx becomes the standard of care in pediatric healthcare settings across the country and around the globe, we’re pleased to preview just a few of our exciting FY16 strategic initiatives.
Quantify Impact, Communicate Results In November 2015, CCA will proudly partner with Randall Children’s Hospital & Legacy Research Institute on the first-ever clinical trial to measure and document the effects of customized music medicine on postoperative pediatric patients. Led by Dr. Serene Perkins, MD and Dr. Shaban Demirel, PhD look for the results to be published in leading medical journals in Spring 2016.
Enhance Brand Experiences
Expand Programs Nationally Boston Children’s Hospital, the #1 ranked pediatric hospital in the nation, has selected MyMusicRx as their exclusive partner in providing music medicine to hundreds of children and teens each month. MyMusicRx will be presented in Boston by our brand partner Converse with service delivery beginning in January 2016.
Designed by Ziba Design and manufactured locally by Axiom Custom Products, the sixth iteration of our brightly colored MyMusicRx carts are lightweight, highly maneuverable, and feature an interactive tongue drum panel on the exterior. Stocked with teaching quality instruments and iPads, these state-of-the-art carts are generously presented at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital by the Hammersley Family and at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emmanuel by the Longtain Family.
Develop and Lead Innovation Opportunities CCA has identified a groundbreaking opportunity to deepen and expand palliative and end of life care across each of our core program offerings. These support initiatives are not available in the community currently. We estimate that new, CCA palliative services could support approximately 350 local children and their 1,400 immediate family members annually, along with CCA staff and front-line volunteers. 17

Get Involved. Be Inspired. Our 860+ amazing volunteers provided an estimated 12,700 hours to CCA’s programs and events, a value of $282,000, all as an effort to change the lives of those in need. And, very often, our volunteers find it’s actually their own lives that are changed by the extraordinary spirit of the courageous kids and families CCA serves.
Volunteers help power every aspect of our organization from directly supporting seriously ill children, to creating new program innovations, and spreading joy throughout the community. They are our heart and soul, fueling CCA’s innovative programs of JoyRx.

There are many ways to get involved, whether on your own or as a group: • Share your musical talent • Gather your schoolmates, family, and/or friends to create a fundraiser or sponsor a family during the holidays • Become a mentor to a child or teen going through treatment in Oregon or Southwest Washington • Lend a hand to support one of our many events
