Calvert Jones [1804–1877] The Quayside, Naples Talbotype [1846] 8 1/2” x 7” Beautiful, very early example of the Talbot type printing process. A contact print by Jones of a vibrant city street with blurred motion from the slow exposure. Beautiful building in the background compliments the striking scene. Print overall in superb condition. Unmounted.



Maxime DuCamp [1822–1894] Palais De Karnak Salt Print [c. 1855] 5 7/8” x 8” A beautiful salt print on delicate thin paper, mounted to a period, one-ply board. Print overall in excellent condition. Some anomalies in emulsion on right hand side but physical condition of the print is excellent. A rich, strong impression. Title, location of image, artist, and plate number printed on mount recto.



John Wheeley Gough Gutch [1809–1862] Panoramic View of Creswick Salt Print [1857] 6 7/8” x 23 1/4” Panoramic view of Creswick from 1857. Glass pate negative slated paper print. A very rare printing process and a very beautiful three-panel panoramic on its original mount. Titled and dated in a period hand. Print shows some mild fading on right hand margin and creases where print was originally folded to fit into an album or book. A strong salt print with deep rich shadows and a desirable purplish neutral hue. A charming and lovely photograph of this village with mountains in the background, church on the right and people in the foreground. Image is dry-mounted to vintage matte board, remainder of image folds up to fit on mount.



Linnaeus Tripe [1822–1902] Temple Study, Madura (Madras) Albumen [c. 1858] 9 7/8” x 13 7/8” A lovely, early Tripe photograph of India. An albumen print of a temple and courtyard. Print overall is in superb condition. Print quality is rich and lovely. Mounted to matte paper. Waviness to matte at margins. Title and information written on mount recto. Blindstamp: “LT Photographer to Government” on bottom mount.



Louis De Clercq [1836–1901] Esneh, Les Chapiteaux et le Sommet des Colonnes du Temple Albumen [c. 1860] 8 3/8” x 10 3/4” An albumen print from 1859-60. Print is on its original mount. Mount is in very good condition. Print is in excellent overall condition. A few very minor surface anomalies, otherwise very lovely early print.



Andre Disderi [1819–1889] Prince Odolgorouki Albumen [1860] 7 7/8” x 9 1/8” Condition is typical of 19th century albumen prints with very light handling creases at print margins (visible under direct reflected light) , slight ripple at left print edge, tear repair at lower right corner of print edge (visible upon close inspection). Image is tipped into construction paper. Title in pencil on print recto.

Medical Records Thomas Bertch Albumen [Date Unknown] 3 5/8� x 2 3/8� Mounted on card with personal information written in ink. Minor warping of paper mount. Framed.



Henry Bosse [1844–1903] Boatyard at Wabasha, Minn. Cyanotype [1890] 17 3/16” x 14 3/8” An extraordinary, powerful cyanotype exemplifying the finest aspects of Bosse’s photographs of the upper Mississippi. Possibly the finest body of work ever created on this great American waterway. This photograph was from the personal album of Major Mackenzie, the head of The Army Corp of Engineers while Bosse was the draftsman and photographer. Print overall in excellent condition, surface near pristine as this had continuously been in Mackenzie’s personal album for more than 100 years until it came on the market in 1993. A rich photograph with deep shadows and delicate highlights of a group of four paddle boats, moored on the river. Also a tug boat in action and horse-drawn cart. Individual standing on a barge and various houses in the background. Image is unmounted. Artist, Medium, Title, Date, Collection, Plate number written in pencil on bottom verso.

Eugene Atget [1857–1927] Hotel Du 18th Scle. Unknown Medium [c. 1900] 7” x 8 1/2” Beautiful contact print. Albumen of a French hotel facade with numerous people on balconies, in windows, and seated in front, including two small children--one an infant. Print overall in excellent condition. Has a beautiful shiny, rich patina, typical of platinum prints. One or two small surface anomalies. Lovely, rich print. Image is hinged to matte board. Titled in pencil on verso.

Edward S. Curtis With Her Proudly Decked Horse Cyanotype [1910] 8� x 6� Image has rough edges, like it was torn instead of cut. Two creases cross the image vertically. Notations written in pencil on verso. Image is unmounted.

Edward S. Curtis An Oasis in the Badlands Vellum Photogravure [1905] 12� x 16� This classic Curtis image was made in the heart of the renowned Badlands of South Dakota. The subject is Red Hawk, the Dakota sub-chief who was born 1854. He participated in his first war party in 1865, with Crazy Horse, against U.S. army troops. He was a fierce warrior and ultimately engaged in 20 battles, including the Custer fight in 1876. Red Hawk is majestic as he sits astride his white stallion, while it drinks from a small pool on a vast prairie in the Badlands. He wears a full war bonnet of eagle feathers, a beautifully beaded and fringed war-shirt, beaded leggings, and heavily beaded moccasins. He carries a carbine and his horse wears large eagle feathers both on its mane and forelock. The image and the subject project an unusual combination of strength and calmness in the dramatic, iconic landscape.



Heinrich Kuhn [1866­–1944] Hans & Walter Gum Print [Date Unknown] 9 1/8” x 11 5/8” A beautiful, warm gum print (as identified by Paul Messier). A rich, subtle, beautiful portrait of Kuhn’s young sons. Print overall in exceptional condition. Several small passages of burnished/shiny areas diagonally across lower left quadrant in three to four areas. Unmounted.



Richard Tepe [1864–1954] Untitled Gelatin Silver [c. 1920] 6 5/8� x 8 7/8� A rich and dramatically-printed gelatin silver print from the 20s or early 30s, possibly even the teens. Print is in near-pristine condition. Printed on a selo paper. Signature and title written in pencil by Tepe on verso. Image hinged to matte board at top.



August Sander [1876–1964] Bauernmadchen Gelatin Silver [print 1980] 8 1/16” x 10 1/2” Printed 1980 by Sander’s son Gunther. Stamped lower left August Sander Koln. A beautiful contact print of a classic Sander image of 2 country sisters in traditional dress. Rich, beautiful print. Early for contemporary prints. Signed by Gunther and dated on verso. Left side of paper cut at an angle. Image hinged on top left side only.



August Sander [1876–1964] Frau Peter Abelen, Cologne Gelatin Silver [print 1980] 8” x 10 3/8” A rich portrait by August Sander of Frau Peter Abelen (Helene Abelen). Classic portrait of androgynous artist’s wife. Blindstamp lower left. Surface in excellent condition. Some minor historic imprinting. Signed by Sander’s son, Gunter Sander (printer) and dated on verso. Unmounted.



Andre Kertesz [1894–1985] Mrs. Edwin Rosskam Gelatin Silver [1927] 11” x 14” Postcard A beautiful carte postale in excellent condition. Image evidences some oxidation in the shadows, consistent with gelatin silver prints of this age. A fine and rare portrait by Hungarian master Kertesz. Image hinged to matte at top.



Edward Weston [1886–1958] Printed by Cole Weston Nude (Torso) Gelatin Silver [1927] 9” x 7” A fine, rich print of a classic Weston nude. Print surface in exceptional, near-pristine condition. Mounted on matte board. Some slight yellowing to the back of board and extreme edges of mount, otherwise in extraordinary condition. Signed by Cole Weston in pencil and Edward Weston signature stamped on verso. Title and date written in pencil on verso.



Ralph Steiner [1899–1986] Model T Gelatin Silver [1929 / print 1980] 9 5/8” x 7 1/2” A beautiful, rich contact print. Print is in excellent to near-pristine condition, with only some very minor emulsion loss at extreme edges of the print. This print was selected by Steiner specifically for Cardozo in 1980/81. Signed in pencil on verso. Unmounted.



Ralph Steiner [1899–1986] Nehi Advertisement Gelatin Silver [1929/ print 1980] 7 7/8” x 9 5/8” Contact print in near-pristine condition. Signed in pencil by Steiner on verso. This print was specifically chosen by Steiner to gift to Cardozo. A beautiful, rich print of this classic Steiner image. Unmounted. Stored in a vintage envelope.



Ralph Steiner [1899–1986] Saratoga Coal Company Gelatin Silver [1929 / print 1980] 7 7/8” x 9 5/8” A beautiful contact print of a classic Steiner image from 1929. Print was created by Ralph Steiner in 1980 and chosen for Cardozo. A rich, warm, fine example of this classic, iconic Steiner photograph. Signed in pencil on verso. Unmounted.



Ralph Steiner [1899–1986] Vanderbilt Garage Gelatin Silver [1965 / print 1980] 7 1/2� x 8 1/4� Classic Ralph Steiner image. Beautiful play of light and shadow. Deep, rich shadow details. High contrast impression of this image, just as it should be. Print is in near-pristine condition. Has been archival over-matted since received as a gift from the artist. Image is hinged to matte at top. Signed in pencil on verso.

Numerous soft, ridges in print, typical of the ferrotype process, radiating from lower right corner into upper left of print, visible only in raking & direct, reflected light. Beautiful print under normal viewing cicumstances. Unmounted. Copyright stamp on verso. Ferrotyped.



Willard Van Dyke [1906–1986] Ventilators Gelatin Silver [1932 / print 1980] 9 5/16� x 5 7/8� A gelatin silver photograph--rich, striking, beautifully printed. Print in excellent condition. Originally dry-mounted and still semi-adhered to its original mount. Van Dyke signature, title and information written in pencil on verso. Purchased by Cardozo from the artist in the early 1980s.



Edward Weston [1886–1958] Printed by Cole Weston Sandstone Erosion, Point Lobos Gelatin Silver [1942] 8 1/4” x 7 3/4” Print on original mount, in near-pristine condition. One tiny area of historic pinpointing. Overall print in superb condition. Print has been framed since acquired by Cardozo in the 1970s from the Lee Witkin Gallery in New York. Signed by Cole Weston in pencil and Edward Weston signature stamped on verso. Title and date written in pencil on verso.



Bill Brandt [1904–1983] Untitled (Seated Nude) Gelatin Silver [c. 1950 / print c. 1970] 11 1/4” x 13 1/2” Beautiful early 70s print of a classic Brandt nude. Strong formal qualities. Mounted on board. Some surface imperfections (not visible under glass). Typical historic inpainting. Early, somewhat faded signature, typical of the desirable early 70s prints. Print is mounted and framed. Signed on mount recto.



Wynn Bullock [1902–1975] Child in Forest Gelatin Silver [1951 / print c. 1970] 8” x 10” Classic Bullock image that was included famously in the Family of Man Exhibition. Lovely, rich, detailed, sharp print in near-pristine condition. This print has been in a frame since acquired by Cardozo in the early 80s. Archival mount and archival matte. Signed in pencil on recto by Bullock.



Bill Brandt [1904–1983] Lond (Nude with Bent Elbow) Gelatin Silver [1952 / print c. 1970] 11 1/2” x 13 3/8” An early 1970’s example of this classic, iconic Brandt image. Rich dark tones. Print overall in beautiful condition. Some surface indentations and imperfections common with mounted Brandt prints of this era. Faded signature indicates early 70s print, highly desirable. Mounted on period board. Board overall in very good condition. Evidence of finger and palm prints and possible ink or pigment on the backside (probably retouching materials).



Harry Callahan [1912–1999] Elanor, Port Huron Gelatin Silver [1954] 7” x 7 1/16” An exceptionally beautiful and rich Gelatin Silver print in near-pristine condition. Photograph was hinged at one point and evidence of original archival tape. Fine example of a classic Callahan portrait of his wife. Mounted and framed. Signature on mount recto. Minor waviness of print at top. Minor indentation in top right corner of image border. Photograph was purchased by Christopher Cardozo in the early 1980s.



Yousuf Karsh [1908–2002] Georgia O’Keefe Gelatin Silver [1956] 19 1/4” x 23 3/4” An oversized classic O’Keefe portrait by Karsh. Singed in pen on mount. Print is dry-mounted to archival board. A beautiful, rich print with deep shadows and well-defined highlights and mid-tones. Delicate subtlety in highlights on her face, which dramatically contrast with the background adobe wall. Interesting portrait with skull and antlers above her. Hand resting on a weathered piece of wood and door open as she looks in the direction of the incoming light.



Paul Caponigro [1932 – ] Apple Gelatin Silver [1964] 6 6/8” x 7 7/8” Mounted on original matte. A beautiful, rich impression of this famous Caponigro image (A Universe of Stars Contained in an Apple). Print is in near-pristine condition. Signature in pencil on recto. Acquired from the artist by Cardozo in the early 1970s.



Danny Lyon [1942 – ] Racer, Schererville, Indiana Gelatin Silver [1965] 13” x 8 3/4” Print was gifted to Cardozo in 1990s by Danny Lyon, directly from the artist. Print in near-pristine condition. There is typical, very minor softening of print corners. Image is unmounted. Signed on verso in pencil. Lovely print of a classic Lyon image.



Emmet Gowin [1941 – ] Danville, Virginia Gelatin Silver [1967] 4 1/2” x 5 3/8” Contact print of baby. Beautiful print, rich, in near-pristine condition. Mounted on archival board. Artist, title and date printed on recto. Acquired by Cardozo in late 70s/ early 80s.



Paul Caponigro [1932 – ] Redding, CT Gelatin Silver [1968] 13 5/8” x 19” An oversized version of a classic and lyrical Caponigro photograph. Beautiful water and reflections in the foreground. Slightly out of focus, caused by movement of the long exposure. Background is a beautiful Connecticut wood and stream in autumn. Print is beautiful impression in near-pristine condition. Dry-mounted onto board. Signed by Caponigro on board and on over-matte. Acquired from the artist by Christopher Cardozo in the 1980s. Cardozo was a teaching assistant to Caponigro in the summer of 1971.



Nick Nixon [1947 – ] Untitled (Bebe Through Window) Gelatin Silver [1971] 8 5/8” x 6 1/16” Mounted on archival board. Print has been continuously over-matted and stored since received by Cardozo as a gift from Nixon in 1971. Print is in excellent to near-pristine condition. Mount somewhat dirty. A classic, extremely early portrait of Nixon’s wife Bebe. Signed in pencil by Nixon.



Josef Koudelka [1938 – ] Man and Rocket Gelatin Silver [1971] 21 1/4” x 14 1/4” No damage to image surface. Unmounted. Signature in pen on mount recto.



Brett Weston [1911-1993] Oregon Gelatin Silver [1973] 7 3/4� x 8 1/4� Beautiful, very rich gelatin silver contact print. Print has been framed since date of purchase with archival matting. In excellent to near-pristine condition. A glowing dramatic landscape. Image is Mounted. Signed and dated in pencil on mount recto. Acquired by Cardozo in the late 1970s.



Madoka Takagi [1956 – ] Central Park West and 73rd Street, Manhattan Platinum [Feb. 1990 / print 1993] 7 1/2” x 9 1/2” Currently living and working in California, Takagi was most active in New York in late 80s and early 90s. A beautiful, extremely delicate, high key platinum print. Photograph taken from above of Central Park West. Extraordinary detail and variation in the highlights. Extremely subtle and delicate shadows. Ibid for mid tones with highlight detail above. Print in near-pristine condition. On an over-sized sheet of archival, single-weight, translucent paper. Print was acquired by Cardozo directly from the artist in 1993. Signed, titled, and dated in pencil on verso. New York Series #48. Unmounted.



Madoka Takagi [1956 – ] North View from Municipal Building, Manhattan Platinum [Nov. 1990 / print 1993] 9 1/2” x 7 1/2” A stunningly beautiful and delicate platinum print of Manhattan. As with previous print, acquired directly from the artist, both prints were specifically made for Cardozo, a personal friend of Madoka’s. This platinum print has a stunning and gorgeous tonal range, some very deep shadows. Beautiful delicate highlights and broad mid-tones. Printed on an oversize sheet of archival, single-weight, translucent paper. In near-pristine condition. Signed, titled, and dated in pencil on verso. New York Series #145. Unmounted.
