COV ER S TORY
Scrubbing up well for 30 years THEY SAY YOU can tell more about the culture within an organisation by its state of cleanliness than by any other means. Why? Because the cleanliness of a business premises, whether it be a shop, an office or a factory, shows a level of pride, care and attention to detail that starts at the top and flows all the way down the line. It’s also been said that the state of the cleaning industry is like a barometer for the state of the economy because, while cleanliness is essential in every industry, it tends to be labour intensive. As a result, it’s often one of the first expenses to be reduced when the going gets tough. But the price paid for cutting back on cleaning is usually quickly felt due to a rise in absenteeism and a fall in customer patronage. But despite the ongoing need for its existence, the cleaning industry is no different to any other in terms of the demand for constant innovation and reinvention. A man who knows this better than most is John Taylor, owner of The Cleaning Supply Shop in West Gosford. Celebrating 30 years in business in June this year, Mr Taylor is one of the pioneers and innovators in the specialised cleaning product supply sector. Despite numerous hurdles over three decades, Taylor and his team have done much more than just successfully weather the storms. This story uncovers how passion, innovation, customer service excellence and unmatched knowledge have been the key ingredients for The Cleaning Supply Shop’s longevity in business.
By Phaedra Pym
30 years in business is no mean feat. But celebrating 30 years in a 32-year old industry is quite extraordinary. Having worked with his father who, in the 1950’s, was one of Sydney’s first contract cleaners and the first to clean a regional shopping centre, Taylor was one of the pioneers for a new concept of retail/wholesale commercial cleaning supply stores in Australia. Only the fifth of its kind in NSW, The Cleaning Supply Shop opened its doors on June 4, 1984 in Manns Road, West Gosford despite scepticism from others that this type of concept could work. But having worked with his father for many years followed by a two-year management stint for the third largest cleaning company in Australia, Taylor knew a thing or two about cleaning and the way the industry worked. He was no stranger to the Central Coast either having been involved in the contract cleaning management of several of the Coast’s shopping centres when working with his father. It was a strategic move based on the expected growth of the Central Coast and strong connections with the right people. For instance, Erina Fair had just opened its doors and Taylor’s former employer, Kennedy Cleaning, held the contract for cleaning the centre. He also had solid connections with Gosford’s Imperial Centre and the former Market Town. Naturally they all knew who to call for their cleaning supplies. Far from smooth sailing all the way Over the last 30 years, Taylor’s business has gone from strength to strength. But it hasn’t
always been smooth sailing. The business survived three floods in the first five years, the recession “we had to have”, the GFC, numerous political and red tape issues, legislative changes, and the loss of Internet and EFTPOS facilities for six weeks due to road works at West Gosford. Despite these significant hurdles, Taylor’s business has not only survived but thrived. Over three decades they’ve only had three moves, (each time to larger premises on higher ground well away from potential flood waters); they’ve only ever lost six employees; they have exported to Vietnam, New Zealand and Fiji; and they continue to enjoy professional, mutually beneficial relationships with many of their first customers and suppliers. Today The Cleaning Supply Shop occupies a 900sqm warehouse/showroom and supplies to customers from numerous sectors throughout Australia including healthcare, aged care, hospitality, mining, commercial cleaning and retail, all based on word of mouth referral. They’ve also expanded their range and service to include sanitisation, odour control and hygiene solutions as well as offer mobile and onsite servicing for their range of cleaning machinery by in-house licensed electricians. Knowledge is power Unlike the major multinational distribution companies that are favoured by many large organisations for their logistical “box moving” ability, The Cleaning Supply Shop has built a reputation based on unsurpassed knowledge, innovation and customer service.
With over 30 years experience across a broad spectrum of industry categories that includes, retail, manufacturing, services and superannuation, we set out to understand your business and how it operates so that we can advise and guide you through the good times and the difficult times with the sole aim of making you and your business a financial success.

Clearly passionate about the industry, Taylor knows every product on his warehouse floor inside out. He’s also up to speed with new products on the horizon and actively contributes to the cleaning industry’s future. He is regularly asked to write articles for industry publications, speak at conferences and is renowned for going above and beyond the call of duty to solve a cleaning related problem. At times this has even led to the development and manufacture of new cleaning products, methods and systems. For instance, Taylor came up with the idea of a brand new system of flat microfibre mopping for hospital cleaners that resulted in the solution for a major Workplace Health and Safety issue, which was not only costing the hospital a fortune in absenteeism but could also have potentially placed them at risk for the spread of germs. Taylor’s reputation is such that his expertise is constantly sought to solve problems in major and highly specialised industries, especially the healthcare and aged care sectors. He also works closely with manufacturers who are faced with an increasingly rapid emergence of new sustainable materials, such as flooring manufacturers. Indeed flooring manufacturers are a classic example where the right cleaning solution can solve a myriad of potential problems caused by incorrect maintenance. In fact, Taylor has been responsible for saving some of the major floor manufacturers a potential fortune in warranty costs as a result of recommending the right cleaning product and process.
John Taylor with the equipment range sold at The Cleaning Supply Shop There are a number of reasons that ensure a business associated with cleaning enjoys longevity, no matter what economic realities emerge: Cleaning is not a luxury item. It is and always will be a necessity to prevent WHS problems, maintain compliance and optimise customer safety and satisfaction. One in eleven workers are employed in the Australasian cleaning industry (Source: Inclean Magazine).
Intellectual Property within the industry continues to grow as needs change over time, especially in the area of healthcare where new strains of bugs are constantly appearing on the scene and other bugs are developing resistance to existing cleaning and sanitising solutions. “Cleaning is a hugely diverse and very essential industry and we have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy our small contribution,” said Taylor.

Gosford waterfront dining precinct
Proposed Gosford Waterfront Dining Precinct GOSFORD COUNCIL HAS approved a new development concept that will see a ‘pop-up’ eating and retail precinct materialise early in 2015 on the Gosford Waterfront beside the Brian McGowan Bridge. Following a call for expressions of interest earlier this year Erina developer Mistlake Investment Pty Ltd has been granted a five-year lease for The Broadwater’s Gosford Recreation Reserve. The concept will see 10 pop-up eateries, three showcase studios, a dessert bar and associated amenities dropped-in along The Broadwater’s shoreline.
Council’s new Director of Community Growth Judy Jaeger said that the area offers magnificent development potential and is an important part of Council’s efforts to transform the waterfront precinct into a dynamic and vibrant part of the city. “We’re confident that this proposal has the potential to unlock this under-utilised land and provide an active and engaging public area with a range of leisure and dining activities. It shows a good understanding of this prime waterfront location’s sensitivities and supports the key objectives
behind the area’s development, which is to deliver economic and social benefits to Gosford,” said Jagaer. Tim Gunasinghe from Commercialhq, a subsidiary of Mistlake Pty Ltd, said the modules would be purpose built At this stage, the development concept comprises 27 drop-in modules, with each module about the size of a shipping container. Looking just at its employment potential, we expect that this proposal could generate around 115 new jobs.

Skills Centre opens at Tuggerah EARLY JULY SAW the Federal Member for Dobell, Karen McNamara, open a new Skills Centre for Central Coast Group Training at Tuggerah Business Park. The Central Coast Youth Skills Employment Centre in Bounty Close is set to become a major employment and training facility, delivering job pathways and career opportunities for the Central Coast’s youth. Mrs McNamara said, “this centre will be vital for local youth seeking to gain employment and fulfils an election commitment of the Abbott Government. “The Australian Government has contributed $2.7 million through a grant to Wyong Shire Council in partnership with Central Coast Group Training while a further $700,000 was also delivered through the Government’s Community Development Grants programme to complete the construction of the Centre,” she said. The Centre was designed by architects, CKDS and built by Red Eye Constructions, both Central Coast companies and comprises a cluster of serviced offices/business incubators and training areas. The Centre is supported by CCGT’s strategic partners in the project, Central Coast Business Enterprise Centre who have relocated into the Centre along with IPAR Group who specialise in HR and Back to Work Coordination. CCGT General Manager, Greg Best said the Centre would an ideal location for business start-ups and would be welcome in the complex. “We still have available some

Central Coast Youth Skills Employment Centre limited high quality commercial space for organisations that can demonstrate strategic benefit to the core function of the facility; that of jobs and business development,” he said. At the opening the Mayor of Wyong, Clr Doug Eaton commented on the job market in Wyong saying, “With youth unemployment in Wyong Shire at 16.4 per cent, young people face significantly greater challenges than young people from other parts of NSW. Combine this with a low school retention rate of 53 per cent the importance of providing more training and job support targeted specifically for young people is critical.”
Wyong Mayor Doug Eaton with CCGT CEO Greg Best and Member for Dobell, Karen McNamara Once the facility is operational, it will also provide young people with disabilities and those socially excluded in the community access to employment and training opportunities.

Two smart work hubs for Central Coast GOSFORD AND WYONG have been selected as locations for two new ‘Smart Work Hubs’ under a NSW Government pilot programme worth $800,000. Acting Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment the Hon. Andrew Stoner and Member for Gosford Chris Holstein made the announcement in early July that the two projects would be up and running by the end of the year, offering commuters on the Central Coast alternative work locations closer to home. “Smart Work Hubs are convenient alternatives to normal work spaces and are focused on large commuter populations, like the Central Coast,” Mr Stoner said. “The Central Coast will join three other Smart Work Hubs in Western Sydney and will operate for a minimum of 12 months under our pilot programme. “Local projects will be led and managed by Gosford City Council, as part of the redeveloped Kibbleplex Centre, and the Nexus Smart Hub in the Wadalba Enterprise Precinct North Wyong by the Henry Kendall Group. Commenting on the Hub, Director, Damien Wilde, said that their proposal had been supported by Wyong Council and TAFE. “The Nexus Smart Hub will provide a wide range of facilities to encourage micro and small business enterprises as well as commuters,” said Wilde. “Apart from high speed broadband connectivity , hot desks, private offices and meeting rooms we will also provide; child minding, free gym and within the precinct, service station, food outlets and other retail services.”
Artist’s impression of the Nexus Smart Hub “Around 40,000 residents commute outside the Central Coast region each day for work and this can have significant impact on their work/life balance. Many may not be suited to teleworking but we only need 150 to 200 people to fill the facility,” he said. “These Smart Work Hubs will offer a wide range of facilities for corporate clients or casual users, including fast broadband, Wi-Fi, video conferencing, meeting spaces and kitchens.” “By establishing Smart Work Hubs in locations with large commuter populations, we can take advantage of the benefits of using technology to support smart working practices. “New technology and high speed broadband are changing the way people work and NSW has much to gain by taking a leading position in this emerging landscape.”
Member for Gosford, Chris Holstein with Acting Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment the Hon. Andrew Stoner The Gosford Smart Work Hub will be co-located in the redeveloped Kibbleplex Learning and Enterprise Centre, with the University of Newcastle Research and Innovation Hub, Business Hub, high tech City Library, flexible learning spaces, public conference facilities and professionally serviced suites also to be on-site.

Big plans for Kooindah Waters New home for furniture removalists
INVESTA LAND HAS exchanged contracts for the sale of Kooindah Waters Residential Golf and Spa Resort at Wyong. Chinese backed Harman Global Holdings are the buyers of the property which comprises 18-hole golf course, 108 room Mercure resort and the remaining residential lots, in an off market transaction. HGH are planning a state-of-the-art hotel, housing and a conference centre. Pending planning approval, the new owners intend to proceed with plans for a suite of developments including over 100 boutique houses, a 120 room hotel and improvements to the existing resort including improved function rooms enabling the Wyong Shire to attract bigger conferences and events. Wyong Mayor Doug Eaton said the development would be on track with Council’s recently endorsed Economic Development Strategy that places tourism and economic growth high on the agenda. Ethan He, CEO of the residential project marketing company Harman, said his company’s vision is in sync with Council’s bigger picture for Wyong, addressing the need for niche housing, a marketable tourism identity and major economic investment. “Kooindah was a logical choice for us as a development because it is in an enviable
position to capture the Sydney market, located just off the freeway in an outstandingly beautiful area,” Mr He said. “We found Wyong Council accessible, responsive and willing to facilitate and enable investments that align to their strategic plan for the area. “Mayor Doug Eaton has extended a warm welcome to Harmon and we thank him for supporting our initial venture into the Central coast property market. “It’s great to see Council and the Mayor showing great vision and leadership when it comes to marketing the area and supporting investment”, said Mr He. Robyne Abernethy, Chief Executive Officer at Central Coast Tourism, said the proposed expansion of the resort would be a great boost for the Wyong Shire region and support the growth of the local visitor economy. “The proposed expansion of the resort will further enhance our destination appeal, with the additional room stock and expanded meeting and event facilities allowing the region to target larger conferences and support the attraction of major regional events” The next step is for Harman Group to submit a masterplan and planning proposal to Council for a merit-based assessment to be undertaken.

HAVING OUTGROWN THEIR Erina premises Gosford Removals and Storage have relocated to premises in Somersby Falls Road, Somersby which allows them to offer a unique storage service not available on the Central Coast. Owners Chris and Karen Coulson have acquired a 7.5 hectare property with a 1,050 sqm warehouse plus offices with a capacity to securely store 320 wooden furniture storage containers plus lounges in racks (lounges do not store well in containers) under cover and over 250 standard shipping containers on the extensive hardstand area for long and short term storage. The concrete hardstand area has a rated capability to stack containers up to four high. The move to Somersby is a further step in the growth of their business which started out in furniture retailing at Tumbi Umbi in 1984 and morphed into an exclusive removal service under the Karis Removals name. The change came about as their customers noticed the care they took in delivering the quality furniture they had bought and came back to them when they were moving house. Coming from the retail side of the industry the Coulsons understood what customers wanted. While their retail business continued to grow their very small furniture removal business also grew by word of mouth and in 1997 they had the opportunity to buy their rivals Gosford Furniture Freighters. They closed down their retail business and focused exclusively on transport renaming the business Gosford Removals and Storage and a year later purchased their Bonnal Road, Erina depot and storage facility. The Somersby move is a classic example of a business that has grown organically thereby keeping their service quality and operating efficiencies under control. Central Coast Food Group discusses Supply Chain study By Frank Sammut, Executive Officer, Central Coast Manufacturers Connect A GROUP OF 29 Central Coast food and beverage and distribution companies heard the results of a recent Supply Chain study into their businesses carried out by AusIndustry’s new Entrepreneur Development programme at a meeting of Six Strings Brewery in early July. Held under the auspices of Central Coast Manufacturing Connect (CCMC) the study recognised that the food and beverage industry plays a prominent role in the Region and is the largest sector within the manufacturing industry. As founding members of Food Innovation Australia Limited, a federal government supported body, CCMC and the University of Newcastle have established a food advisory group of industry specialists, academia and government agencies ,to foster the local food industry and to become a regional node of FIAL and its programmes. The study conducted is known as “Mapping the Connections” and is an assessment tool developed by the Innovative Regions Centre in partnership with Deakin University to assist clustering initiatives and industry collaboration. It aims to assess existing linkages and levels of collaboration amongst selected groups of organisations. The outcomes of this study would provide the foundation for the development of an action plan that: • Fosters the establishment of a Central Coast regional food cluster • Facilitates innovation and the sustainable growth of the food industry in the region. • Delivers a platform for continuing dia-

Their current magazine, Kidz on the Coast has been established for almost 12 years and has built an enviable name as Central Coast’s longest established and favourite family magazine. The concept behind Kidz on the Coast is to inspire and support community, providing resources to assist local Central Coast families. As two local mums themselves, Simone & Debbie understand the importance of support networks, access to local services and relevant parenting information and they are incredibly proud of the product they have created. After extensive research and the unwavering support of the local community, Simone & Debbie are thrilled to introduce an additional publication that supports life on the Coast for over 55s. THERE WERE DOUBLE celebrations at the University of Newcastle's Central Coast Campus in early July as almost 500 students graduated from their programmes and UON marked 25 years of partnership in the region. On Thursday 3 July and Friday 4 July, the achievements of students were recognised during five graduation ceremonies at the multi-sector campus. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said the graduands' new qualifications stood them in good stead for their future careers. "The University and Hunter TAFE provide world-class training and education in a dynamic, flexible and student-focussed learning environment. This year, we celebrate 25 years of partnership, where we have worked with business, industry and the community to offer contemporary studies and work-ready graduates," Professor McMillen said. "We are delighted to celebrate with our students as they reach the important milestone of graduation and we wish
TM
them every success for the future." Of the 497 students graduating, 439 have completed University of Newcastle programmes, while 58 have completed TAFE qualifications. 2014 marks a significant milestone for the University of Newcastle's English Language and Foundation Studies Centre, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its Open Foundation programme. In its inaugural year in 1974, Open Foundation was undertaken by just 80 commencing students. Since its inception, about 35,000 people have enrolled in the programme, which provides students with a qualification to gain entry to university and develop the skills to succeed at a tertiary level. The enabling programme has a proven track record, with many graduates having gone on to successful careers as lawyers, nurses, journalists and scientists, while others are now counted among the University of Newcastle's academic and professional colleagues.

NEWS
Composting invention wins top innovation award CENTRAL COAST CARPENTER, Greg Hales, has been awarded the inaugural Swane Innovator Trophy for his composting invention, the Composting Cannon, the highest honour awarded in the Nursery and Garden Industry, NSW and ACT’s Fusion Innovation Awards. The awards, which are part of the annual Green Expo Sydney showcased 35 entries, from both greenlife and non-greenlife categories, with awards being given to products which reflected on the key criteria of innovation, excitement and performance. Environmentally conscious carpenter and Avoca resident, Hales created the one-step composting solution himself, a product which takes compost straight to where plants and vegetables are growing. In addition to the Swane Innovator Trophy, Hales’ pioneering product also took out two other awards at the Green Expo Sydney - the Gold Award in the non-greenlife Fusion category and the People’s Choice Award, which was judged by visitors to the two day event. The Composting Cannon is a simple,
efficient and clean alternative to bulky composting gardens and fits into even the smallest of gardens. “After around four months the Composting Cannon can dispose of approximately 25 kilograms of waste, creating the ideal breeding ground for nutrientrich soil and earthworms, which is perfect for garden and plant growth. “Not only is it great for the environment, but the Composting Cannon promotes healthier soil, which leads to healthier vegetables and that can mean a healthier you,” he added. Following the recent support and acknowledgement of the gardening and nursery industry, Greg is now speaking with a number of large hardware and garden suppliers to discuss stocking his product in stores. “I have been overwhelmed with the response to the Composting Cannon, both locally and in the gardening and nursery industry nationally. The Composting Cannon is currently available for purchase at Kincumber Mitre
Greg Hales and his Composting Cannon 10, Like Minds Cafe Avoca or via the website at www.compostingcannon.com.au. Greg also has a regular stall at the Avoca Beachside markets.
Central Coast infrastructure needs – Have your say LAST MONTH CCBR invited members of our Linkedin Discussion Group to have their say on the Central Coast’s infrastructure needs with the following question: We all think we are hard done by when it comes to major infrastructure on the Coast but for most of us ROADS are the big issue. So what roads do you believe are most in need of (a) repair, (b) rebuilding, (c) improved to take more traffic. Or, are there areas on the Coast that simply aren’t being served adequately and a new road with a new route is needed?

CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW AUGUST 2014
Here are some of the comments: “Our network of major roads is improving. But we have to use it better. Roads are expensive to build and so are carparks at railway stations. We have to get the bus network sorted. One hour from The Entrance to Wyong or Gosford is ridiculous whatever happened to the orbital loop bus system proposed a few years ago?” Kevin Armstrong “Dare I throw a bit of old and new thinking at this question. The Romans knew how important roads were for the flow of goods and services. Though take note that many services once carried by roads are now done digitally; financial transactions, correspondence & reports of all sorts, publications like books & newspapers, higher education & certification, entertainment & music and slowly but surely moving people to meetings and work are going digital. Physical transport on roads therefore become an increasingly expensive thing when compared to digital - However this digital trend will make our lives more focussed on local transport, over local roads. Trips to the local work, shop, school and beach will be more important. So local road transport will be proportionately more important to more people. I think we are witnessing this already on the Central Coast, local traffic is now becom-
ing a real issue in peak times. I recently saw a traffic cue of 2 km on Avoca drive on a Saturday (no accident). Likewise on getting through Wyong and Tuggerah after 5pm. There is a dire need to address local traffic flow, by incorporating commuter lanes for taxis, minibuses, shared rides and light weight vehicles. Also to utilise digital technologies to enhance traffic flow; active GPS routing around accidents and jammed areas, access or price restrictions on certain areas for heavy vehicles and flexible work and school start/finish practices to even out the traffic flow. All these things are being implemented by so called 'Smart Cities' around the world. Why don't we become one of them - we're getting great digital infrastructure and now is the time to start using new tech with our good old local roads to keep the flow going. There was a lot of work done on the NSW Transport Plan, the Central Coast Plan was released last December. They conducted a series of interviews and research the 2 years prior. It makes for interesting reading, if not entirely as innovative as this discussion. Some very good work done here. It's release got a little lost in the December / January period. Here's the link: http://www.transport. nsw.gov.au/content/central-coast-regionaltransport-plan Does draw a horizon for further funding of roads, rail etc.” Dave Abrahams CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

RetireAustralia invests in Coast as hub for luxury retirement Financial planner leases at Wamberal
The Lake House, Forresters Beach Retirement Village RETIREAUSTRALIA’S MANAGING DIRECTOR, Tim Russell, today announced the completion of a $5 million lifestyle centre, ‘The Lake House’, at Forresters Beach Retirement Village. The centre, which has been under construction for 14 months, is typical of RetireAustralia’s Central Coast retirement villages. “We have seen a very healthy upswing in demand for our villages, particularly in our new retirement product on the Central Coast” says Glen Brown,RetireAustralia’s Head of Development and Construction. “This trend has given us confidence to invest strongly in the region. Buyers are continuing to seek out the Central Coast’s stunning natural environment, unbeatable value for money and refuge from the city’s hustle and bustle. For less than the price of
a small home in Sydney, retirees are realising they can live only a short drive away in a stunning, maintenance free, luxury villa with access to resort style facilities perfect for entertaining,” Brown said. RetireAustralia owns 28 retirement villages nationally with the Central Coast being the company’s superior product. In the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year, investment of $30+ million will be made with 100 brand new villas in the development pipeline at Forresters Beach, Glengara and Wood Glen. By the year 2019, the company plans to have built 450 additional Central Coast villas with capital expenditure reaching $160+ million. As the number of Australians over the age of 65 is set to double by the year 2042, RetireAustralia’s outlook is clearly strong and news of a public float is gaining momentum they say.

• Receive a remuneration package which is above the high income threshold; or • Receive a remuneration package which is above the high income threshold and are not covered by an award or enterprise agreement. From 1 July this year the high income threshold was increased from $129,300 to $133,000. Award employees earning more than this amount, could typically include senior IT professionals, engineers, some allied medical professionals and senior manufacturing staff. When determining what is considered to be 'earnings' for the purpose of the high income threshold the following payments should be taken into account: • The employee's wages;
•A ny additional amount applied or dealt with in any way on the employee's behalf, for example salary sacrifice; and • The value of non monetary benefits that the employee receives, such as the use of a company laptop, phone, or car. Payments which will not be considered to be earnings under the high income threshold include: •P ayments which cannot be determined in advance; • Reimbursements for business expenses; and • S uper contributions as prescribed by a law of the Commonwealth, state or territory. Payments which are not to be considered earnings for the purpose of the high income threshold are generally self explanatory with the exception of 'payment which cannot be determined in advance'. The Fair Work Commission looked at this very issue last year in Foster v CBI Constructions Pty Ltd in relation to overtime payments. In Foster the Commissioner, with the support of the Full Bench upon appeal, held that earnings do not include overtime payments unless the payment of overtime was guaranteed, anticipated or agreed to in advance. In Mr Foster's case the overtime earned was in fact a payment that could be determined in advance as Mr Foster was subject to an ongoing direction by his employer to attend a mandatory safety meeting before commencing work every morning. The
Protecting your personal and business assets Life Insurance can provide you with comfort and assurance when life goes against our intended plans We often take things and people for granted. We tend to assume that they will always be there. We send our partners off to work and expect that we will see them home in time for dinner. We farewell loved ones on their adventures and expect to greet them upon their return filled with exciting stories of their experiences. There have been so many tragic news stories lately that have reinforced the value of life. It hits home that what we have today really could be gone tomorrow. The fact that life is so precious reinforces the fact that Life Insurance has a critical role to play throughout every stage of your life. It becomes even more significant if you are responsible for financially supporting your family, have personal or business debts or simply rely on a regular income to meet daily living expenses or financial goals. Life Insurance, Disability and Income Protection cover provide an essential safety net so your loved ones are not left to cope
with the added stress of financial hardship on top of the immense grief they may be experiencing. Similarly, the success of a business may rely significantly on you as a business owner and your ability to bring in clients and generate revenue. If you are not present to do this, how will your business survive? Insurance House offers clients a full service ranging from: •A simple, competitive and high quality personal insurance solution delivered online for your convenience (www.ppexpress.com.au/insurancehouse). • S pecialist advice on all areas of Life Insurance. •B usiness Succession Planning for business owners to protect the value of their business share and estate. direction to attend an ongoing mandatory meeting was held to be distinguishable from overtime which is "sporadic" and "indeterminate". The case is a useful insight as it highlights the importance of closely reviewing and assessing what the employee's actual earnings are when faced with a claim for unfair dismissal. If employees are working regular overtime, as in the case of Foster, or receiving additional non-monetary benefits this may have the effect of excluding them from the unfair dismissal regime if it pushes their earnings above the high income threshold The importance of understanding which employees fall under the unfair dismissal regime means that you will have greater discretion in the performance management of employees who do not have access to the regime. Do clients Google My Business?
Danis Tandiono Senior Web & Search Analys, Organise.net.au DO YOU REMEMBER when you could do business without Google? It doesn’t seem that long ago does it. We listed in the white pages, created adds in the Yellow Pages, a regular add in newsprint and had some fun radio and TV campaigns. Some of us used direct mail and some businesses had outbound telephone campaigns. Those days seemed simple. These days potential customers, clients and suppliers are googling your business whether you know it or not. They may just be looking for your address directions, perhaps searching for your phone number or website address. They may want to know your opening hours or whether you can deliver by parcel post. Research also shows that most new business clients search for you to validate your business offerings and online reputation. What will they find? Will they find you at all? Will they find the right information? Will they instead find your immediate competiCONTINUED ON PAGE 24

Do clients Google My Business? tor? Give it a try, google yourself or better still have a friend google you and send you a quick honest report. This may surprise or shock you. If you’re in shock or indeed underwhelmed there are well established ways to improve the situation. Build or revisit your website, fill it with honest, accurate and informative information, that is well written and grammatically correct. Make sure it looks professional and lists your association with other bodies such as industry groups and/or eventual licences and accreditations. Have original photos or images or video. Link or embed your business orientated social media accounts. Develop a search engine optimisation strategy. Work the plan. Sounds daunting doesn’t it? There is of course help at hand. Google has just launched a new helpful service ‘Google My Business’. Their goal is

to make your basic business information searchable on Google for all who are searching for you. You don’t strictly even need a website, it won’t cost you anything either. You will however need to start a Google account; Gmail, YouTube or Google+ if you don’t already have one. Take your time while setting this up, the information you submit will need to be verified by Google via your mobile or fixed line phone or by post (takes a fortnight). Naturally this exact same information should be listed on your website. If not it’s a good time to harmonise it. Once these basics are done it’s time to consider advertising on one or more of Google’s services; AdWords, YouTube, Display Network, Maps or more. Many will have experimented already using AdWords vouchers. Many too will have found this a slightly unsatisfactory experience. There is of course help to be had here. Google’s
Central Coast infrastructure needs – Have your say CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16
Why not think right outside the square and dream of a coastal light rail from Warnervale to Woy Woy allowing the coastal communities to have intermodal transport options rather than having to drive. Make sure they are all Wifi enabled and encourage people to use them close to home. Then we can link with cycle ways and footpaths, free up roads and create commercial hubs of commerce with additional people. Paul Anderson CEO Gosford City Council “Awesome idea but before we get the state begging bowl out again (because who else will fund it?) how about we get a decent bus network sorted? The infrastructure exists but the quality of the current service is shocking. Do some homework on the routes, subsidise the annual/ quarterly ticket holder fare and lay on the Wifi! Change people’s expectations of who can use buses and make sure they are reliable, clean and above all quick! Get the RMS to lay more bus lanes!” Rob Kitchen Rob I actually think rather than try and use the existing you should break it and rebuild it. Why fund on the basis of kilometres travelled when the real KPI should be "bums on seats"? People don't use now because
CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW AUGUST 2014
of the routes taken, the routes are based on kilometres travelled. Imagine if they where ‘hail and ride’ and busses went from point a to point b as an express rather than via c to z. For example try getting a bus from Umina to Erina. Difficult and lengthy hence no market. Rather than more lanes which is questionable let's ask for better facilities i.e. shelters where kerb and guttering exists with footpaths, lighting, Wifi and mobile reception just for a start. Don't fall into the trap of defining a solution until we have some data. Would be nice if we could get funding for a study from Restart NSW so we can then talk to super funds or whoever about how we find and make it work. Paul Anderson Some interesting points here. Light rail sounds great, but would need to cover a different route to the heavy rail. Also the comments on ‘bums on seats’ is a winner. I am often surprised at how many buses are on the roads, the majority empty. The bus travel time from Wyong to The Entrance being around twice that of a car due to the km travelled. Priority lanes on Wyong Road would help this, but at the sacrifice of other traffic. Hopefully with the increased investment in infrastructure we would see more job creation and people employed locally, requiring shorter trips to work and less cars Peter Miller
advertising network is arguably the single largest advertising medium in Australia with a turnover of $1.7 billion, 12.3 million unique visits and 8.75 billion page views each month, with a 92.2% reach of Australian Internet users. Incredible really. The old days of listing and advertising may have been simpler, though we think the new ways are not so scary. Help is always at hand. If all of this is hard to digest, contact a certified Google Partner such as Organise.net.au We hold regular short courses for businesses and organisations and can supply you with helpful documents to keep you up to date. Why is all this so important to our region? For over 20 years local and state politicians have fallen over themselves to get the votes of that selfish group who want to live in the past. The result of their success is now seen in the declining number of businesses operating on the Central Coast and the escalating youth unemployment. Politicians need to get it in their heads that jobs don’t just materialise. Jobs are created by business, not government and until the last two years our region has been served very poorly by our local government politicians in particular. Both Gosford and Wyong Councils are now working on reversing this terrible situation. The business community needs to lead in supporting both Councils for the good of the region as a whole. Finally, CCBR has instituted a Linkedin Discussion Group and last month asked the question about Infrastructure needs. Some of the comments appear on Page 13. If you like to join this Discussion Group please email us. Edgar Adams Editor

FUNNY BUSINESS
AN OLD MAN lay sprawled across three entire seats in the movie theatre. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, “Sorry sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.” The old man didn’t budge. The usher became more impatient. “Sir, if you don’t get up from there I’m going to have to call the manager.” Once again, the old man just muttered and did nothing. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old dishevelled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police. The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, “All right buddy what’s your name?” “Fred,” the old man moaned. “Where ya from, Fred?” asked the police officer. With a terrible grunt in his voice, and without moving, Fred replied... ... “The balcony.” A soldier was asked to report to headquarters for assignment. The recruiting officer said, “We have a critical shortage of typists. I’ll give you a little test. Type this,” he ordered, giving him a pamphlet to copy and a sheet of paper, and pointing to a desk across the room that held a typewriter and an adding machine. The man, quite reluctant to become a clerk typist, made a point of typing very slowly, and saw to it that his work contained as many errors as possible. The sergeant gave the typed copy only a brief glance. “That’s fine,” he said, “Report for work at 8am tomorrow.”
“But aren’t you going to check the test?” the prospective clerk asked. The sergeant grinned and replied, “You passed the test when you sat down at the typewriter instead of at the adding machine.” One day a little girl came home from school, and said to her mother, “Mummy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn’t do.” The mother exclaimed, “But that’s terrible! I’m going to have a talk with your teacher about this ... by the way, what was it that you didn’t do?” The little girl replied, “My homework.” TA man receives a call from his credit card company, “Sir, we have detected an unusual pattern of spending on your card, and we are calling to see if everything is alright.”
“Yes,” replied the man. “My card was stolen over a month ago.” “Why didn’t you report your card as stolen?” asked the card company representative. The man replied, “Well, whoever stole my card is spending a lot less than my wife!”
Quote of the month “Whenever an individual or a business decides that success has been attained, progress stops.”

RETHINKING = TIME TO STAND UP?
A recent study indicated that too much sitting down increases the risk of cancer. Encourage your staff to work both standing up and sitting down to help them work to their best potential and stay healthy. Other productivity-boosting ideas include mobile storage caddies that allow employees to personalise their workspace but move to different places around the office. It takes expertise and RETHINKING to come up with a solution that will not only save you time and money but also increase your teams performance, whilst keeping them healthy.
