Ray Graetz – Celebrating 30 years in a tough industry • Celebrating 30 years in a tough, fiercely competitive and highly regulated industry. • Ray’s number one message for business owners – Never ever forget your people are your greatest asset. • Ray shares the 4 pillars for business success that he swears by CELEBRATING 30 YEARS in business is an extraordinary milestone for any business. But when that milestone is celebrated by a company that grows stronger by the year in arguably one of the toughest industries around, it makes the milestone even more remarkable. Ray Graetz founded Coastal Transport Services in 1986 and has steadily grown the company from a single semitrailer driven by a hired driver to a fleet of more than 40 trucks, two depots and a team of more than 100. This story celebrates Ray’s business journey and shares his four ‘pillars’ for business success, which are applicable to all business owners.

Born and raised in country South Australia, Ray Graetz commenced his career in the police force before being recommended for officer training with the Australian Army. Graetz served in the Army for seven years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam, exiting in Sydney with the rank of Captain in 1974. He ran a couple of small businesses, including a delivery truck service, before moving to the Central Coast with his wife and daughter in 1977. A year later Graetz was headhunted to manage Toukley Transport, which soon extended to the management of two transport companies after the owner expanded his business. Nine years later Graetz was ready to go out on his own. Starting modestly, Graetz’s ‘lucky’ break came when he won a tender to handle the deliveries for Track Fast, the parcel delivery service for the Central Coast at the time, a contract which demanded that he grow the business by purchasing additional trucks and taking on more drivers. The growth of the business was gradual, strategic and initially centred on a ‘build it and they will come’ mentality. “In the early days, I’d buy a truck and we’d go and find the work for it,” said Graetz. But once word began to spread of

Coastal Transport Service’s exceptionally high service standards, the tables turned and customers began knocking on their door. In the early 1990s the opportunity arose for Graetz to buy his former employer’s companies, Toukley Transport and Morton’s Transport, which by this stage were operating at a loss. This purchase resulted in the company effectively doubling in size as it gave Graetz the opportunity to transform the losses into a successful profit generating amalgamation. Graetz had a clear vision from the start based on business tips he had picked up many years before founding the business coupled with lessons he had learned in previous management roles, especially in terms of what not to do. The ‘four pillars’ upon which Graetz’s business was built and which continue to drive him today are: • Always look after your good customers • Always look after your good employees • Always ensure your income exceeds your expenditure • Get your money in fast “ I don’t do anything unless it relates to those four pillars,” said Graetz, who has since developed Coastal Transport’s ‘12 Golden Rules’ as an extension of the four pillars.

Clearly shown on the company website, the 12 Golden Rules highlight the company’s commitment to customers and essentially replicate the company values, which include Integrity (Rule No. 10. ‘Don’t tell lies’), Respect (Rule No. 1. ‘Remember our customers feed us’), and Commitment (Rule No. 6. ‘Keep promises’). Graetz ensures these values permeate from the top throughout the entire company. “If I see anything that deviates from how I want things to run, I’m all over it,” said Graetz. Graetz’s number one piece of advice to business owners is to never forget your greatest asset is your people. His staff retention levels (many have been with the company for more than 20 years) and lack of industrial disputes in an industry known for its complex and ever-changing compliance requirements, are a testament to the fact that Graetz practices what he preaches when it comes to looking after his people. “We pride ourselves on mutual respect as a team. I won’t tolerate discrimination, we treat everyone fairly, I pay them above award wages, and we train and nurture them well,” he said. To support the growth of the company, Graetz employed Management Accountant, Graham Ryall as General Manager in 2007. Ryall not only had the skills and qualifications Graetz was seeking but he also possessed the personal qualities that would make him an ideal cultural fit within the organisation. Ryall has just been promoted to CEO based on his achievements over the past nine years. “Graham is in lockstep

with me on the company philosophy and ensures that our standards are met to the highest level,” said Graetz.” His efforts in growing the company over the past nine years have been outstanding and he is now the driving force behind our growth moving forward.” While competition is high in the transport sector, Graetz said he doesn’t really regard others as competition. “Service is the one thing we sell in the transport industry and while people can undercut your price, quality service will win every time.” As a result of the company’s absolute commitment to quality service, Coastal Transport Services looks after the transport needs of some of Australia’s largest public companies, including Woolworths, Wesfarmers and OneSteel. Most importantly, these relationships are long-term. Like all business owners, Graetz has been through his share of challenges, the toughest being the volume of red tape required to stay compliant in the highly regulated transport sector and the “unfairness” surrounding company payroll tax. True to his four pillars though, Graetz is proud that his company has remained in the black, albeit marginally some years, even during the GFC. “I believe in turning adversity into advantage and regarded the GFC as a period of opportunity. We made a paper-thin profit, but still the income exceeded the expenditure (pillar No. 3). Most importantly I never put one employee off,” he said. Coastal Transport Services has evolved into a business that offers four key services

Ray Graetz with CEO Graham Ryall for its growing clientele – transport, warehousing, a public weigh bridge and a truck wash service. Graetz has also expanded into Sydney, opening a depot last year at Yennora and experiencing such rapid growth that they had to move to larger premises twice in just 18 months. While these days Graetz has more time to travel and play golf, knowing the company is in capable hands with Ryall at the helm, he continues to have his finger firmly on the pulse of the company he built from the ground up. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

EDITORIAL

Edgar Adams discusses local issues

Let’s get behind our manufacturing industries OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO R R Taylor Pty Ltd for the Export Award at the Hunter Manufacturing Awards in Newcastle last month (Page 10). Traditionally the Hunter is a strong manufacturing region and it is to their credit that they invite manufacturers from the Central Coast to participate. The Hunter has plenty of manufacturers who export and it is for this reason that this Somersby based company’s win has added significance. We have reported on R R Taylor’s export success in previous issues of CCBR but the gist of it is that here is a company that saw a need, developed a product, found that no one in Australia was interested so took it overseas, worked hard overcame heaps of obstacles and got a very good order that will ensure their future. Of course Taylors’ aren’t the only Central Coast company that exports. There are many but they keep their head down. The only point about not telling anyone about your successes is that no one, particularly our politicians and bureaucrats, knows and so we keep getting told that Australian doesn’t have a viable manufacturing industry. Well it does and there is a very viable manufacturing industry right here in our region. Two years ago CCBR took the initiative and produced a Central Coast Manufacturers’ Capability Directory. We published it as part of our Central Coast

Ultimate Guide to Business publication that, this year we have incorporated in our 2016 CCBR Year Book – The Year in Review. This Directory lists just over 200 Central Coast companies along with what they manufacture. We should be proud of these companies because it is manufacturers and builders and farmers and miners that actually generate REAL jobs. Not jobs that are dependent on government handouts. Our Cover Story this month is about a bloke who 30 years ago got a ‘lucky’ break and found himself in the transport industry. One of the toughest industries to be in – highly competitive, highly regulated. How did he survive and make his business, Coastal Transport Services the success it is all in this story by Phaedra Pym. I met Ray Graetz not long after setting up CCBR 26 years ago and have followed the growth of his business. It hasn’t been all beer and skittles but he has stuck to his principles, principles developed during a distinguished military career. Perhaps one day he will tell us about the obstacles put in his way by government. While there are many successful road transport operators just like Ray and have managed to work their way through these obstacles many more fall by the wayside. Finally, a little prediction on 2017! While there appears to be a move by the

NSW Planning Department at a very senior level and Central Coast Council to stymie any further development in the Gosford CBD the cat is really out of the bag. Thanks to former Gosford Council CEO Paul Anderson and Mayor Lawrie McKinna enough development approvals got through in their term that will create the momentum we need to carry us through the period of inertia created by the merging of Gosford and Wyong Councils that will last well into 2018. Certainly the Lederer Group’s plans for Gosford CBD with their $650 million Gosford Alive development announced in February this year are on hold and one has to wonder what political forces are causing this. However that is the only cloud. John Singleton will start his development on the former Dutton’s Tavern site in Gosford CBD early in 2017. This will be the catalyst. Meanwhile Joe Bechara’s Pinnacle Group is confident they will start in Gosford in early 2017. The Big Two developments in Gosford CBD that were first approved by the JRPP have certainly gone quite but my information is that ‘substantial commencement’ on both will be carried out soon ensuring that these projects can be kept alive. And then Tony Denny has a number of projects that he will commence in Gosford and Terrigal in 2017. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

GENERAL NEWS

First crane in Gosford CBD to Singleton

Image of proposed restaurant and lobby to Bonython Tower

Image of Bonython Tower, Mann Street, Gosford. Construction to start April 2017 THE FIRST CRANE to go up in Gosford CBD will for the John Singleton Property Group’s Bonython Tower project in Mann Street, Gosford. Towards the end of 2015 Gosford Council approved a high rise residential development on the site of Dutton’s Tavern right in the centre of the CBD. It was subsequently offered for sale and Mr Singleton acquired the property along with an adjacent property creating an opportunity for this development to be something special. CKDS Architecture, who had designed the original development were engaged to redesign the project that would make it the equal of any in Sydney’s up market suburbs. The amended DA was submitted to the new Central Coast Council earlier this year and approval is expected by the end of the year. Bonython Tower has been redesigned to be a landmark luxury project that will excite investors and bring business to Gosford. It will be a 12-level plus penthouse residential and commercial building never before contemplated for Gosford. It will comprise 56 premium luxury

apartments with a mixture of 1,2 and 3-bedroom apartments ranging in size from a spacious 76 sqm to a 180 sqm penthouse overlooking Gosford Boat Harbour and Brisbane Water. Also of significance will be the two levels of premium office space, the first office space to be built in Gosford since 1990, with the first level linked to a signature central feature staircase from the ground floor daytime cafe which will transform to Gosford’s must visit restaurant each evening. Marketing Bonython Tower will commence before the end of 2016 with construction planned to start in April 2017 subject to Central Coast Council approval. Also currently before Central Coast Council is an amended Development Application for Bonython Waters to be built on the Monte’s Ashore site on the Gosford Waterfront. Seeing the positive changes at Gosford Council Mr Singleton has also acquired the Monti’s Ashore site and the development approval. As with Bonython Tower he referred the design back to the architects White + Dickson with instructions that this site deserved something very special.

Bonython Waters has been redesigned to produce an ultra-luxury residential development never seen before. It will comprise 36 apartments from 135 sqm to 180 sqm and three penthouses over 7 levels. Marketing for this project will commence early in 2017 with construction to begin by mid-year. Commenting on these two projects Mr Singleton said, “As a long-time resident of the Central Coast I have always had the belief that this region deserved better than it has been getting for far too long. I love this place and everyone knows my passion for it. This is an opportunity for me to put my money where my mouth is and show something can actually happen in Gosford I have tried to get the big end of town in Sydney fired up about the place, but too many people have been burned too often and they are over it. Their confidence that something will happen is at an all time low, I am sick of waiting around.” Mr Singleton said that these projects are just the start and is actively looking for suitable sites that he can develop Marketing for this project will commence early in 2017 for details of the development email: sales@bonythonproperty.com.au CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW DECEMBER 2016

Enlightened Gosford Council changes Terrigal landscape HOLIDAY MAKERS DRIVING into Terrigal this Christmas will be met with a very changed view of the seaside village with three cranes dominating the landscape. After twenty years of wrangling by Gosford Council over the future of Terrigal it all came to an end with the election in September 2012 of a new enlightened council led by Mayor Lawrie McKinna and their new CEO Paul Anderson. Anderson saw the opportunities for tourism and the economy in Terrigal and started talking to developers. He also recognised that Terrigal had to be spruced up, particularly around The Haven. Council has since invested some $8 million on beautifying The Haven and improving the Boat Ramp. Council’s Wilson Street Car Park is to be extended with an extra deck and builders North Constructions are presently carrying out preliminary works prior to the holiday season with construction to start after Easter 2017 – a $2.5 million project. An enlightened Gosford Council gave developers the confidence to invest and today three major residential developments are at various stages of construction and more are on the way. Here is a review of the three residential projects: Pine Tree Lane Terrigal Sydney property developer PTL Land Pty Ltd are well advanced with their mixed use residential development in Terrigal’s Pine Tree Lane (opposite Crowne Plaza) and completion is expected for early 2017.

Cranes working across three sites in Terrigal Around 62 of the 70 apartments in the 6-level development have been sold off the plan. Pine Tree Lane was first proposed to Gosford Council in 2002 and the original DA was approved in 2009. The development comprises: • 34 one bedroom apartments 52sqm to 70sqm in size. All have been sold. • 26 two bedroom apartments ranging in size from 78sqm to 104sqm. • 14 two bedroom apartments (without ensuite) have sold with 2 remaining from $650,000. • 12 two bedroom apartments (with ensuite) have sold with 2 remaining from $795,000. • 10 three bedroom apartments ranging in size from 131sqm to 200sqm. Four remain from $1,050,000.

• 12 commercial office spaces are included in the development of which 4 ranging in size from 75sqm to 104sqm remain unsold and are available from $7,100 per sqm. • The retail component has been designed as a dining precinct with all seven spaces facing the street and have alfresco outdoor dining space attached to each tenancy. • Angela Bonnefin from Bonnefin Property who is negotiating the retail leasing said, “We are targeting a whole range of different food styles and on completion will provide the Central Coast with a fabulous array of operators and a dining destination which will draw custom from all over the Central Coast. Leasing options range from 50 sqm tenancies up to 250 sqm. Builders for the development are Sydney builders, Richard Crookes Constructions. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

TOURISM NEWS

Coast tourism industry at crossroads as government and council ponder Central Coast Council will call for Expressions of Interest from appropriate organisations to provide destination marketing services for the Central Coast’s tourism industry which for the past twenty five years have been provided by Central Coast Tourism. Council approved of the move at its November 25th meeting. The move comes as the NSW Government’s tourism agency, Destination NSW, overhauls the State’s regional tourism industry with the Central Coast becoming part of a new body, “Sydney Surrounds North”. “Sydney Surrounds North” will comprise; Blue Mountains, Penrith, Hawkesbury and all of the Upper and Lower Hunter region as far as Port Stephens. Destination NSW’s new regional tourism model of Destination Networks was announced in July 2016 by the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events, Stuart Ayres to replace the current Regional Tourism Organisation structure. Council says both changes provide an opportunity to review the current status of tourism management and consider the most effective model to help drive economic returns for the Central Coast region as the current funding arrangement is due to expire on 30 June 2017. Central Coast Tourism Inc. has provided a proposal to Council, outlining options for their continuation to manage destination development and marketing in collaboration with Council for the next three years. Funding for Central Coast Tourism by Council In 2016-17 is $566,210. In past years funding by Gosford and Wyong Councils was always somewhat obscure. Gosford Council has levied all business ratepayers for Economic and Tourism Development for the past twenty years, half of which went to Central Coast Tourism. It was never clear how Wyong Council contributed as some funding was by way of contra.

Archer hosts inaugural Continuous Improvement Cluster meeting for Central Coast ON FRIDAY 4TH November precision engineering company, Archer, hosted the first site cluster meeting of the Central Coast continuous improvement group. The group was formed after the Lean Cluster workshop in July this year. The Continuous Improvement event was organised by Central Coast Manufacturing Connect and held in Archers 800 square metre Manufacturing Centre of Excellence. Present were Member companies McCain, TrendPac, Bio Action , Chamberlain Industries and Fortunity training and guest companies Van Homes, Open Shutters and CommScope TE Connectivity. Representatives from AusIndustry and CCMC were also present. Directors Brad and Russ Byrne spoke about the journey of Archer - now into its third generation of the Byrne family - which has gone from precision engineering for the domestic market to world-class product development for international customers. “Continuous improvement has been a key driver in our culture ever since Archer was started 40 years ago by my grandfather”, said Operations Director Russell Byrne. “What you see here today - with our investment in best in class manufacturing machinery, specialty areas covering the whole design-prototype-manufactureproduct test process, and a team which is continually increasing their skill sets - is a direct result of us constantly assessing who we are, what we are doing, where we are going, and then embracing the most effective methodologies.” “Our audience was impressed. There was a lot of note taking and asking questions. We then placed the focus on them

Continuous Improvement Group site cluster meeting at Archer in November and each person explained their own Continuous Improvement journey and where they are at today. It was a very eye opening session.” Russ led the group on a tour of the facility which has dedicated areas for each stage of the design to manufacture process – from computer design to machining to assembly to product testing. He demonstrated how jobs are scheduled with the MRP and visual systems – “Everything has its place.” “The world is getting smaller. We now compete with companies from around the world and we are finding new customers overseas. So, it is vital that we understand and embrace best-practice continuous improvement in order to remain competitive and be better able to contribute to the local economy and provide more job opportunities for young people. That is

why this event is so important and we’re very proud to be the hosts of the first such meeting of the group on the Coast”, said Managing Director Brad Byrne. Frank Sammut, Executive officer of Central Coast Manufacturing Connect, stated that the event was a great success with everyone fully engaged in what the Archer team presented. “Having Archer as our first site visit for our CI group demonstrated to the visiting organisations the importance of leadership in driving a CI culture through engagement. If it is not led from the top then it is not sustainable! Brad and Russell are a great example of this” The group plans to meet every two months. Organisations can join the group via an invitation from the participating members or by contacting Frank Sammut on 0411186634.

Local to international collaboration

From trash to treasure By Phaedra Pym

Eamon Corless Managing Director of Solair

Bruce Cottrill

Erina based solar ventilation company Solair has built a strong relationship with European solar ventilation company SolarVenti and New Zealand Massey University. At the centre of this collaboration is Eamon Corless Managing Director of Solair, a leading expert with over ten years’ experience in solar ventilation. Mr Corless believes that every person should be able to access the best indoor air quality and strives to deliver the best possible solution for all his customers. As part of this determination he constantly seeks to understand the effects of poor indoor air quality on individuals and in doing so he has collaborated with Professor Robyn Phipps, a 2016 James Hardie Innovation recipient at the New Zealand Institute of Building, for her leadership in her recent project of improving the health and indoor in learning environments. This project used the SolarVenti product, provided by Mr Corless, which is a highly awarded solar air collector and the first to receive the Solarkeymark globally. The Solarventis were placed on the 12 classrooms 6 were turned on and 6 were left off during schools terms 2 and 3. The findings showed a reduction in air pollutants and bacteria which effect individual’s health and productivity. The economic cost reduction which showed energy consumption dropped by 250% shows the financial benefits of better indoor air quality through solar ventilation Mr Corless says he is pleased to see the results from the projects are so positive as it creates greater awareness and reason to improve indoor air quality in all indoor environments

There’s no question that today’s manufacturers must pursue whatever efficiencies they can to remain competitive in an increasingly global market. However losing manufacturing jobs to overseas interests doesn’t have be one of those efficiencies if we consider the many opportunities available to us right now to optimise the use local resources. One Central Coast local has found a way to utilise his passion for renewing resources to help keep manufacturing alive within the community. Bruce Cottrill, founder of new local manufacturing business, Bib ‘n Brace, has worked out an innovative means to take a timber waste stream, recover what he can and transform the renewed waste timber into beautiful and useful products for residential and commercial use. “Most people aren’t

CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW DECEMBER 2016

aware of just how much timber is disposed of in Sydney landfill each year - 65,000 tonnes to be exact, of which a healthy percentage is demolition and industrial waste hardwoods,” said Mr Cottrill. “With the right skills and processes, this hardwood can be turned into products that will outperform the equivalent off-the-shelf products. We just need a market willing to look beyond retail and off-the-shelf products to meet their needs. The more people understand the benefits of buying local and sustainably, the more we will keep local manufacturing jobs and skills on the Coast.” As word has spread of the high quality recycled hardwood timber products produced by Bib ‘n Brace, the business has grown to a team of four within months to meet demand. One of their most popular product lines is doors, due not only to the fact that a Bib ‘n Brace door is solid timber throughout, but also because the team can produce them economically and in bulk. “Every entry door we have replaced so far has had an MDF core, which is how standard off-the-shelf doors are manufactured,” said Mr Cottrill. “They had also swollen so much that the doors no longer latched or sealed properly, creating both security and energy wastage issues. A solid timber door can be serviced and maintained and will last indefinitely, not 15 years like a standard door will.”

AspectZ wins HIA Affordable Housing Award By Phaedra Pym

Paul and Paula Zaia Central Coast architecture and construction company, AspectZ has won the HIA Hunter Region’s inaugural Affordable Housing of the Year Award for a granny flat they designed and built at Forresters Beach. The Narara based business was also a finalist in the GreenSmart National Awards for a custom built home at Patonga. Directors Paul and Paula Zaia accepted the award at a gala event

before a crowd of more than 500 local industry leaders and peers from across the Hunter and Central Coast regions and will now represent the Hunter and Central Coast regions at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards in 2017 to compete for the national title of Affordable Housing Builder of the Year. Architect and licenced builder, Paul Zaia said, “It was particularly rewarding for our company to take out the first ever HIA award for affordable housing. Small and affordable is where the future of housing is heading. Australia is only just catching up to other western countries in the world, including New Zealand, where small housing has been a growing trend for some time.” Built for a fraction of the cost of a new home, granny flats can offer a solid outlay to income ratio. There’s also no stamp duty to pay, Complying Development Applications may be approved in as little as ten days and investors may be eligible for tax deductions.

As a result, wait lists exist throughout the school. Academic excellence is important to parents, teachers and students and the school’s HSC results were ranked again in the Top 100 NSW schools, with an increase in students achieving an ATAR over 90. The Board has been strengthened by the addition of Arthur Stanley of Central Coast Motor Group, a past and future parent and wonderful advocate of the school. The school’s development is guided by a visionary strategic plan, Next Generation Teaching and Learning 2015 – 20, which is gaining impetus in its second year of implementation. Enthusiastic presentations from teachers at the Board’s Annual General Meeting demonstrated how actively they have embraced the plan and highlighted

their commitment to ensure CCGS students are at the forefront of innovative and exciting learning opportunities. The school’s staff and students are active learners and users of digital technology, enabling them to function effectively now and into the future. All teachers have been completing Digital Literacy workshops and Digital Collaboration Zones are being introduced in English classrooms reflecting emerging ways of learning and working post school.

Taking a biological approach to growing, adding new lines when the demand calls for it and providing personalised service for order taking and order preparation are just some of the other things which distinguish S&P Dominello, and have contributed to their triumph as Flower Grower of the Year for 2016. “The business has 4 hectares of greenhouses and can heat up to 2ha. Voluntary Planning Agreements require clarity Following submissions made earlier this year by the Property Council, Voluntary Planning Agreements (VPAs) will be made more transparent following an announcement by Minister for Planning Rob Stokes at a Property Council forum in early November. The Minister announced that amendments to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act will put in place tighter controls on how the VPAs are negotiated to ensure clarity and consistency. VPAs are entered into by a planning authority and a developer and are a useful component of a flexible planning system. On the downside, used improperly they can be used to demand excessive infrastructure contributions from developers that, amongst other things, increase the final cost of apartments and houses. Property Council NSW Executive Director Jane Fitzgerald said that while the Property Council and its members strongly support VPAs used well, more clarity and transparency is needed about how they should, and shouldn’t, be used. “VPAs are an important mechanism to secure the flexible and timely delivery of infrastructure and to unlock the economic value of land.” “However, we need to take care to ensure that planning authorities aren’t incentivised to misuse VPAs and that their misuse is penalised if and when it comes to light.” “Extra costs arising out of the planning system add to the final price of a house or apartment, worsening the affordability crisis in NSW.” Ms Fitzgerald said “There should be an expectation that levies on development be reasonable and we need to constrain the capacity for VPAs to be used as a vehicle for excessive charges.” “We must set better disciplines around the scope and type of infrastructure to be funded by development, revive a ‘use it or lose it’ principle for infrastructure contributions, institute clarity and transparency around the process and adopt contemporary solution such as growth area bonds.” “The Property Council looks forward to working with Minister Stokes and the NSW government further on these new amendments.” CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW DECEMBER 2016

MOTORING

It’s Czech Mate – Skoda RS230 SKODA IS FORGING a reputation here for sporty passenger cars, in particular the medium size Octavia RS and especially the wagon variant. You see plenty cruising around with big alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips and roof racks. Turbo charged Octavia RS struck a chord with buyers quite a few years ago who snapped them up. Now that trend looks like continuing for the Czech branch of VW with an enhanced version of Octavia RS in sedan and wagon called the RS230 ( 230 horsepower) in an initial 140 unit run. Priced at $41,990 for the sedan and $43,190 for the wagon, the RS230 makes a strong value statement when compared with other similarly priced Euro-sourced vehicles. For a start, there’s the VW Golf GTi turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine under the bonnet generating some 169kW and 350Nm of torque. Golf GTi is the donor vehicle for many of RS230s mechanicals including the special electronically controlled differential that improves its steering along with grip and drive through corners. As the most powerful production Skoda Octavia ever, the RS230 benefits from a range of ride and handling features to keep it tracking true and to make it a safe high speed sporty sedan. Firm sporty suspension, quick response steering, powerful brakes, big grippy 19-inch tyres and the solid chassis combine to give the car a high level of driver satisfaction. Safety is augmented with a generous level of driver assist technology out of the VW inventory. The RS230 gets autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control to keep you a set distance from the car in front, tyre pressure monitor, fatigue detection and drive mode select with four choices; Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual. Each has its own calibration for various car systems like engine `tune’, throttle and steering

response and the level of electronic stability control intervention. An optional Tech Pack costing $1700 adds parking assist, lane assist, button start, and premium audio. But the `standard’ car scores plenty of luxury kit including black leather seats with red stitching, a 12 mode trip computer, electrically adjustable sports seats, sophisticated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto streaming, dual zone climate control, advanced satnav along with metal pedals and a sports multifunction wheel. Too much to list here. DRIVING On the road, the RS230 is an excellent driver’s car available only with a six speed close ratio manual transmission. It’s quick off the mark and can clock a 0-100kmh sprint in the mid six second bracket (fast). It sits solidly on the road and has minimal body roll through corners. The sharp steering feels great in your hands while the gearbox has a bolt action rifle feel. Skoda uses an artificial engine/exhaust

Let’s get behind our manufacturing industries Transport for NSW should get their Kangy Angy Train Maintenance Facility underway in 2017, unless some parrot that got lost and found its way to some trees in the area is declared “endangered”. Added to that is the continued house construction in the Wadalba and Warnervale areas in our north. There will be projects announced over the past two or three years that won’t happen or will be further delayed for varying reasons.

CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW DECEMBER 2016

note enhancer but that’s OK because it sounds pretty good from inside the car. Not too loud with a muted growl totally in keeping with the nature of the vehicle. The seats are comfy and the level of standard features elevates the RS230 to near luxury level. Fuel economy is a claimed 6.3-litres/100km using 98. We achieved about 7.2L/100km during 600km of mixed driving. It looks impressive on the road with a sporty stance, big black alloys and black body hardware. Inside reflects the sporty outside look. Definitely worth a look and a test drive.

That won’t matter. All of this will drive the Central Coast economy along nicely and as all the residential apartments and houses get completed the homewares and furnishing retailers will get their share too. Finally, may we wish all our readers, subscribers and advertisers a Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year. 2017 has to be the year we have all been

waiting for. With a bit of luck our politicians shouldn’t be able to stop any of this. As I said earlier, the cat is out of the bag. Edgar Adams Editor

BUSINESS TIPS

ADVICE The shame of sham contracting MPLOYERS

ur arge can anage rce, r trade reduce s comp

By Warwick Ryan, Partner, SWAAB Attorneys

ck Ryan com.au A COURT HAS recently fined a company and its director $124,000 over a “sham

s contracting” arrangement in which they um Building, wrongly classified a British backpacker as RINA NSW 2250

an independent contractor, rather than an employee. The case of Fair Work Ombudsman v Australian Sales & Promotions Pty Ltd concerned a backpacker (Mr Beckitt), who was engaged as a charity fundraiser and initially paid $50 per day plus commission dependent on the amount of donations he secured. The company required Mr Beckitt to obtain an ABN and also provided him with a services agreement which stated he was engaged as independent contractor.

However, on closer inspection the court determined that Mr Beckitt was in reality an employee working within the defendant’s business, rather than a contractor running his own business. They reached this decision for the following reasons: • the company exercised a significant amount of control over the way Mr Beckitt performed his work (he had set hours, was directed to work in specific locations and had to follow set scripts or pitches whilst seeking donations, he was required to wear a uniform); • the company provided him an iPad to perform his duties (and he had to provide no tools of his own); • Mr Beckitt had to perform all his duties personally (and could not delegate performance to others); • Mr Beckitt did not work for anyone else during his engagement and was not promoting or generating a business of his own. Having found that Mr Beckitt was legally an employee, it followed that Mr Beckitt should have been paid the federal minimum wage, which the company had failed to do. In determining what penalty to order, the Court said as follows: “…given the vulner-

ability of individuals such as Mr Beckitt, of whom there are many in Australia, in order to discourage others from repeating it, it is important that the Court makes it clear that conduct of the sort admitted in this case will be penalised….persons should understand that attempting to evade the minimum employment conditions provided by the Fair Work Act by contriving to make employees independent contractors can have serious financial consequences of an adverse kind.” Accordingly, the court fined the company $100,000. In keeping with the trend in recent cases of holding directors and managers of companies personally liable for employment law breaches, the court also ordered that the company’s director personally pay a fine of $24,000. The case is a useful reminder that if your business engages people as independent contractors - but treats them very much like employees - there can be penalties involved. Employers are well advised to think carefully about the true nature of their relationship with all staff, the consequences of getting it wrong can be significant.

Keeping Focus on What’s Important

Garret Norris RECENTLY I WAS speaking with a Sales Director and I was asking how things were going? To which he replied, “I am too busy to even think about selling and I should be able to get back to it in a few weeks”. This made me start to reflect and for some reason I thought about the walks I like to take: On a beautiful December day, sunny, windless spring morning, I went for a walk in the bush near my house in Bensville on the Central Coast, looking forward to the scenery. Right? The Aussie bush! Being from Ireland I didn’t think about how many things can annoy me on a simple walk. Not 20 yards in, I met… Flying ants. Horse flies. Green-headed flies. Gnats of all varieties and a family of Magpies. They trailed

just behind and a little above me, diving, flying into my ears, buzzing my eyes, hovering under my nose for brief moments, biting the back of my neck. "And the Magpie nearly scared the life out of me!!!!" Waving my arms and hands around my head as I walked and ran, I whacked a few buzzy buggers this way and that, squashed a few on my head, and sniffed one up my nose. The defence worked….for the most part...but I was so distracted, I didn’t get to look at the scenery much. I lost the main point of the walk! We get distracted in business; we lose track of the main point. Sometimes, we distract ourselves, pursuing customers that don’t quite fit or accounts that soak up lots of time. Sometimes, we get distracted by our staff, or internal politics, or the relentless buzzing and diving of our company managers each of whom thinks there issue should be our first consideration. Bzzzzzzzz. For the bush, the solution is easy: a hat, some bug spray, and a flyswatter. In our business, not as easy. While insect repellent and a flyswatter can be helpful in meetings, other strategies might be required.

We like: business plans, reviewed monthly. Five weekly top priorities, the weekly "A" list. Five daily priorities, the daily "A" list. And blocks of time dedicated to one thing, so we can focus on the most important clients and most important issues. Avoid business Distractions!! Answering Emails Rather than checking emails literally dozens of times each day, It’s much more efficient to set up 2 or 3 times each day when you check and respond to emails. Handling Follow up Work Follow up work is necessary and must get done in a timely manner. It is easy to get distracted and waste time in the same way as when emails are answered as they come. Social Media It’s important to keep screens to social media closed during work periods. It’s also a good idea to keep your phone silent and only check it periodically. My “FAVOURITE” Office Gossip Just don’t go there, it can get expensive…

FUNNY BUSINESS

CHRISTMAS IS THE time when people put so many bulbs on the outside of their houses, you don’t know if they’re celebrating the birth of Jesus or General Electric. Question: Why did the little girl change her mind about buying her grandmother a packet of handkerchiefs for Christmas? Answer: She said “I could not work out what size her nose was!” A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the supermarket, but couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked an assistant, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” “No ma’am, they’re dead,” he replied Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents. At bedtime, they knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. “I pray for a new bicycle, I pray for a new Xbox, I pray for a new DVD Player.” His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, “Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn’t deaf.” To which the little brother replied, “No, but Grandma is!” When the waitress in a New York City restaurant brought him the soup du jour, the Englishman was a bit dismayed. “Good heavens,” he said, “what is this?” “Why, it’s bean soup,” she replied. “I don’t care what it has been,” he sputtered. “What is it now?” “Cash, check or charge?” the cashier asked after folding the items the woman wished to purchase. As the woman fumbled for her wallet, the cashier noticed

a remote control for a television set in her purse. “Do you always carry your TV remote?” the cashier asked. “No,” she replied. “But my husband refused to come shopping with me, so I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him.” Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening windows. A young driver was forced to take a day off from work to appear for a minor traffic summons. He grew increasingly restless as he waited hour after endless hour for his case to be heard. When his name was called late in the afternoon, he stood before the judge, only to hear that court would be adjourned for

the rest of the afternoon and he would have to return the next day. “What for?” he snapped at the judge. His honor, equally irked by a tedious day and sharp query, roared out loud: “Twenty dollars contempt of court! That’s why!” Then, noticing the man checking his wallet, the judge relented: “That’s all right. You don’t have to pay now.” The young man replied, “I know. But I’m just seeing if I have enough for two more words.”
