COV ER S TORY

When being ‘different’ works Jeff McGarn, Managing Director, Graphic By Design (GBD) By Phaedra Pym JEFF MCGARN HAS always excelled at breaking down barriers and stereotypes. From growing up realising he had a different take on life, to running a multi awardwinning Central Coast based advertising and marketing agency, McGarn has learned that to be successful in this game, you need to be confident enough to go against the grain. Celebrating 25 years in business last year, McGarn has created a model that has seen his company comfortably acquire several six-figure marketing contracts for the current financial year, and give larger citybased agencies a run for their money. In fact Graphic By Design (GBD), the business McGarn founded from home in 1989 has won a string of national and international awards and now runs with a team of specialists from a purpose built studio at Erina. In addition to the local graphic design services provided to the Central Coast, it has become recognised nationally as the forerunner in retirement and lifestyle marketing and a leader in marketing for other industry sectors. McGarn grew up in Western Sydney in the late 1950’s and 60’s, an area largely dominated at the time by blue-collar workers. His father on the other hand was an entertainer (comedian and ventriloquist). So life at home was filled with music and entertainment and Jeff was encouraged early on to pursue his passion for music and creativity. It saw him singing on TV and performing on stage from the age of five. But

he was also encouraged to be grounded and learn a profession or trade. Both were important lessons that set McGarn up for a bright future in the creative industry. McGarn’s early years also sowed the seed that would eventually grow into a strong awareness that in the world of advertising, nothing is more important than understanding the people you’re aiming to connect with. Get that wrong, and it doesn’t matter how impressive your message is. McGarn was also able to reinvent himself throughout his career, a quality essential in the media industry that has seen such massive change in the past two and a half decades and continues to evolve at a rapid pace. When McGarn first started in the industry as an apprentice newspaper compositor at the age of 16, his qualification was made redundant in his final year by the demise of traditional typesetting and the introduction of computers. Interestingly, that monumental industry shift actually did McGarn and some of his peers a massive favour, including his tech buddy and fellow music enthusiast Angus Young, who went from fellow apprentice compositor to lead guitarist and songwriter for ACDC. Despite many people telling him computer typesetting wouldn’t last, McGarn was quick to learn the ropes. And sure enough he was right to jump in boots and all. That decision was the start of lifelong commitment to constantly look to the horizon to see what’s coming. When the 80s

arrived with the launch of Apple computers, it made graphic design possible on a personal computer. McGarn was working as the art director for a publishing firm when his boss suggested he could work from home if he was willing to outlay the equivalent of half a house at the time to purchase a computer, a monitor and a printer. McGarn agreed but within six months the publishing business went bust. “All of a sudden I had $30,000 worth of equipment, no job, a mortgage and a wife and kids to support,” said McGarn. “So that was the start of my business. I just had to go out and find clients.” Initially focusing on graphic design and corporate branding, McGarn’s first client was Passmores Business College followed not long afterwards by Swedish company, Husqvarna who McGarn approached at their Somersby premises. The global giant appointed McGarn based on the quality of the design work in his portfolio. Asked if he could produce a TV ad, McGarn was quick to respond in the affirmative, despite never having produced an ad before. But he had the confidence to know he had the skills to pull it off including composing their jingle. And he did more than just pull it off; he and the team nailed it. In fact Husqvarna’s directors in Sweden said he had produced the best work they had seen anywhere in the world. That decision to start big proved to be a turning point in the business. Not only did it allow GBD to start attracting major

national contracts, but it also gained them international recognition when they were honoured in Husqvana’s inaugural World Branding Award in 2000. Choosing to offer the full range of advertising and strategic marketing services using all forms of media, from press and radio to television and digital, McGarn decked out the office with a fully equipped recording studio, mixing and editing suite and a world-class design studio. “It flowed from the decision to service our national clients under a new name ‘GBD Advertising’ while still retaining the ‘Graphic by Design’ division for our local clients,” explains McGarn. He also brought on board the right specialists and built a great team to be able to deliver a concept-to-completion service. Along the way McGarn has enlisted many well-known Australian showbiz identities for various campaigns such as John Wood, Maggie Tabberer and Glenn Wheeler. Best of all, because the studio is so well equipped, the talent comes to him. Today GBD is handling an astonishing $1.5 billion worth of national projects, most of it in the niche retirement and lifestyle sector McGarn has chosen to specialise in. This goes to show you don’t have to be in the city to take on the world. McGarn won the 2013 Business Leader award in the prestigious Central Coast Business Excellence Awards and was a finalist in the NSW Business Chamber Awards. “A friend of mine once asked me how a regionally based busi-

Jeff McGarn and GBD crew with Glenn Wheeler from Channel 7 shooting a TV commercial ness attracts such big clients? I responded by saying that in our vertical pursuit to be a consultant to the retirement sector we’ve actually learnt more about marketing the industry than our clients; so we bring real value to the table.” Indeed a strong focus on strategic planning based on forensically detailed needs analysis work is probably McGarn’s greatest point of difference. A talented photographer, art director, graphic

designer, copywriter, songwriter, musician and singer, McGarn is clearly passionate about his work, his staff, his clients and the Central Coast, remarking, “I set out to raise the bar of creativity on the Central Coast and have been joined by some of the most creative and talented people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. I do believe that if collectively local business thrives, then so too does the local economy.”

Edgar Adams discusses local issues

Storms show our dependence on basic infrastructure While the seats of Gosford and The Entrance have gone back to Labor they are on a knife’s edge. All the lies and resources thrown into these two electorates by the Union Mafia worked – but only just.

The timing of the State Election last month was such that we were unable to report on the result. So we have done in this issue of CCBR (see page 10). Undoubtedly the result has been good for NSW with the Baird Government being given a mandate to sell off the last vestiges of the electricity infrastructure which has been on the cards for almost twenty years. The proceeds of the sale will go into new modern infrastructure across the state. But what does it mean for the Central Coast? Well it means more than a billion dollars for roads, Gosford and Wyong Hospitals, schools, plus 300 jobs from a state government agency relocation to Gosford. Funding has been promised for the proposed Regional Performing Arts Centre on the Gosford Waterfront, $45 million for the Warnervale Link Road and funds for other roads including upgrading the Pacific Highway at Ourimbah and through Wyong. Unfortunately the state of the parties on the Coast has reverted to pre 2011 representation with only one Liberal on the Coast, Adam Crouch in Terrigal, to carry the flag for the whole region. David Harris in Wyong was always going to be re-elected and the Labor Party has anointed him with the position of Shadow Minister for the Central Coast among other things.

To represent the Central Coast in Government the Premier has appointed Scot MacDonald MLC to be Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter and Central Coasta massive job. Getting rid of regional ministers has been a very good start. They were a creation of the Carr Government and simply a stunt. Mr MacDonald has been in parliament since 2011 and knows the ropes. We believe he will do a good job. Edgar Adams Editor

Finally we must thank all the emergency services that sprung into action to get the power back on, clear fallen trees across the roads and help with the fall-out from these storms. They have and are still doing a magnificent job.

LAST MONTH’S STORM across the Central Coast and the Hunter could well be equal to that in 1974 which old hands are saying was worse than that of ten years ago. It really doesn’t matter though because the damage it has caused has been enormous and we will be living with it for quite a while. While the personal cost has been massive the cost to business has also been substantial and one wonders how many will recover. This event has shown us how dependent we are on basic infrastructure particularly electricity. The loss of power has had a knock on effect taking out our sewage treatment and pumping stations, water supply and most of the mobile phone and telecommunications towers. And what was the cause of this, apart from flooding? Trees. Trees were blown down everywhere taking out electricity wires and poles. Trees also caused untold property damage as well. On that basis we need to undertake a risk assessment of the impact of trees on our infrastructure and property. Trees are not endangered as the Greens would have us believe and these activists have got to be brought under control. Where trees have grown up to jeopardise infrastructure and property they must be cut down. As we go to press Wyong Council is getting on the front foot on this issue and called an Extraordinary Meeting for Wednesday 29 April to review its tree policy following these storms with the public invited to attend. Gosford Council should do the same.

Aurrum acquires Legacy aged-care centres Aged-care operator Aurrum has acquired two aged-care centres, at Wyoming and Norah Head, from Brisbane Water (NSW) Legacy for an undisclosed sum. The move follows Aurrum’s acquisition of a two-facility portfolio at Erina and Kincumber from Terrigal Grosvenor Lodge Pty Ltd in late 2014 for a reported $53 million. A new operator in the aged-care industry, Aurrum established itself in the market in 2013 following two years of extensive research into the aged care sector. Aurrum Chairman, David Di Pilla, told CCBR, “We felt that there was a clear opening for a aged care provider with a new concept. Our initial facilities were established via a Victorian portfolio of 300 operating beds at, Brunswick, Reservoir and Healesville.” “The Erina and Kincumber acquisitions were made as they provide a scale able presence in an attractive market like the NSW Central Coast. The Central Coast was seen as an attractive market due to its growing population base, substantial retiree population and its proximity to Sydney.” Mr Di Pilla also said that the company would be proceeding with a new 5-star aged care facility on the vacant site on Terrigal Drive adjacent to their present aged care facility on Terrigal Drive Erina now known as Aurrum Erina With approximately 900 beds operating or in development, Aurrum is one of the CONTINUED ON PAGE 20

National award for Ramm Botanicals RAMM BOTANICALS, one of Australia’s leading propagation nurseries has been awarded the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia’s Large Production Nursery of the Year Award at their national industry awards in Melbourne last month Presented by Nursery and Garden Industry Australia, the awards, recognise and honour excellence in business, products and services and acknowledge industry leaders as they strive to achieve best business practice within the nursery and garden community. Kangy Angy based Ramm Botanicals is a certified wholesale nursery which exports plants in the form of tissue culture to many markets including USA, Europe and Japan, and services the needs of a broad network of licensed growers throughout Australia. Thanks to an extraordinary breeding program led by Ramm Botanicals, more than 25 spectacular new hybrid species of kangaroo paw are being grown across Australia and the world, and the nursery has become the world’s biggest breeder of the native plant, defying tough global competition. While Ramm prides itself on its popular drought tolerant, low maintenance lines which include colourful ornamental plants as well as native grasses, hardy shrub and ground covers, the exciting business has also moved into the development of edible crops such as blueberry and chili, introducing 30 varieties of the pepper with heat ratings from zero to hero. Ramm was praised for constantly pushing the boundaries to be a world class marketing innovator in high health plants, a success due in part to its commitment to new product development and a strong

CEO of Nursery and Garden Industry Australia, Robert Prince, said judges were extremely impressed with the team’s exceptional innovation and rigorous trialling methods which always have the needs of their end users in mind both in Australia and around the world “We heartily congratulate the team for this excellent achievement. Local historian, Merril Jackson’s idea for Gosford Rotary Park to be covered with a carpet of 30,000 hand crafted poppies, all made locally, was a fitting background for 100th ANZAC Day commemorations on the Central Coast. The project, supported by Gosford Council, also saw a Poppy Sculpture made by local artist Margrete Erling of Mandalong as the centre-piece to the display which was on show from 16th to 27th April. Gosford City Mayor Lawrie McKinna said that the response had been overwhelming with individuals, schools, childcare centres, community groups all participating. “It was really heartening that groups from Wyong also participated, he said. Over the 12 days thousands of visitors are reported to have visited the poppy field and even more sharing their experience with friends by social media across the country and around the world.

Erina based finance brokerage, Astute Ability Group, has beat lawyers, accountants, financial planners and marketing professionals across Australia to take home a win from the Australian Small Business Champion Awards. Astute Ability Group won the ‘Professional Services’ award at an awards ceremony in mid-April at The Westin Sydney, beating 15 other finalists. Mhairi MacLeod, founder and principal of Astute says it is their commitment to building a lasting relationship with clients which won them the trophy. “We took out this award because we have high standards of excellence in the way we communicate with our client base and keep our clients up to date. I think we are unique in the way that we are doing all those things on a regular basis and not just

relying on a ‘fill in a form and we’ll do the business’ approach, but we are actually talking to clients,” she told CCBR. “We are actually building a rapport and having that communication open on all levels – not just at the first point of contact but throughout the whole course of the loan. “It also comes down to their use of technology to make the loan process quick, easy and personal for clients,” she said. While Astute is based at Erina they service clients nationwide. MacLeod also commented that it is also the technology that they use. “We deal with many clients remotely, so we have Skype available. This makes sure our clients still have got that interaction with a human being.” “At the end of the day, a lot of businesses are trying to go completely online and we can actually do that, but we don’t. We prefer for our clients to have the option of being face-to-face, even if they are remote. “We don’t have to be in a major city for customers to come to us and deal with us.” The Australian Small Business Champion Awards is the only national recognition program for Australian small businesses. The program is a way to recognise the efforts of small businesses to the prosperity and vitality of communities across Australia. Former Bunnings Warehouse at West Gosford sold

Former Bunnings Warehouse building in Stockyard Close, West Gosford A BUSINESSMAN RETURNING to the Central Coast from an extended stay in Europe has bought the former Bunnings Warehouse building on Manns Road, West Gosford paying $12 million plus GST. The property, at 3 – 13 Stockyard Place, West Gosford, which has been vacant since Bunnings moved to larger premises in West

Gosford two years ago comprises a 11,016 clear span warehouse building with surrounding hardstand on a 25,100 sqm site area. The buyer has not disclosed his plans for the property at this stage but CCBR understands it will be used for one purpose only. Geoff Tilden from Raine & Horne Gosford negotiated the sale.

Draft Warnervale District Contributions Plan Developers will be required to fund community infrastructure in the northern part of the Shire now that Council has formally adopted the Warnervale District Contributions Plan. Council has identified $375.2 million of works required to meet the needs of the growing population in the Warnervale Town Centre area including roads (accounts for $177 million of the works) playgrounds and parks, stormwater management, water main upgrades, a community hub and an indoor recreation centre ($15 million). Funding for The Link Road ($39.2 million) is included in the Plan but Council will continue to seek a funding commitment from the State Government to fund this vital link between Wyong Town Centre and Warnervale to meet the increased traffic needs that will directly result from development in the area and take traffic off the already congested Pacific Highway Mayor Eaton said: “By 2031 we need to accommodate 70,000 new residents and many of them will be located in the Warnervale area.

(MUA) had damages awarded against it of $482,000 and was ordered to pay a fine of $80,000 for refusing to allow a couple to start work with a labour hire company. The labour hire company that refused to place them was also fined.

Law and Findings The Union argued that it was legitimate for it to give preference to union members. The Court was completely unsympathetic to that argument and found that the Union’s behaviour was unlawful and obstructed the right of the couple to find employment. Accordingly, the couple were successful in seeking damages totalling $800,000 against both the Union and the labour hire company.

The Facts A couple had sought employment with a labour hire company as stewards on a ship. The labour hire company, knowing the MUA’s rigorous approach to such matters, required them to join the Union before

Lessons The lessons from this are that:• Unions are not above the law. • Employees do not have any obligation to be Union members. • Companies do not have an obligation

to adopt a particular type of enterprise agreement or follow any form of Union direction (beyond their express rights – ie. right of entry and WH&S). In practice, of course, Unions exert practical power through basic intimidation and the misuse of work, health and safety legislation to obstruct company’s operations where that company is not bowing to Union demands. However, the risk of being sued is real both for the Union and you – if you accede to Union pressure to engage in unlawful conduct. Furthermore, individual Union members can be joined as respondents in proceedings making them potentially liable for damages and potentially have their accreditation removed. The best tactic in any proceedings where you want to resist cooperation with a Union’s unreasonable demands is to appear mildly enthusiastic but be practically obstructive at the same time, ie. “I’d love to cooperate but I could be sued”. Maintaining privacy in an open plan office Open plan offices have had some bad press lately. Staff mainly complain about the lack of privacy and the noise from other employees. But when open plan offices don’t work, it’s usually because there wasn’t enough thought involved in the office design. In other words, it ended up all ‘open’ and no ‘plan’. Careful design is required for effective open plan offices, so here are some ideas to help you get it right. • Open plan doesn’t just mean big open space working, like the old fashioned typing pools. It means making the best use of your space by having a collaborative working area that can be used by most people, most of the time. • You will need areas for private meetings and quiet work zones. Think about all the office processes and the need for concentration and confidentiality. Ensure everybody has access to suitable private space. • Be mindful that group meetings and brainstorming sessions can be disruptive to others trying to perform quiet or complex tasks. Breakout rooms can be useful for meetings. • There are different levels of privacy. Soundproof rooms should be available for confidential discussions. Otherwise, privacy screens are great for creating segregated spaces without the fishbowl feel. Even storage units can be used to create privacy partitions, with the added bonus of filing space. • For additional sound privacy, consider

acoustic screens, which absorb up to 90% of sound. Another option is sound masking or noise cancellation speakers. • The layout of desks around the office can have a big impact on how much privacy people feel that they have. Try to avoid situations where eye contact is made every time somebody looks up from their work. Stagger desks so that people don’t feel watched. Ensure that staff don’t need to shout across the office to communicate. • Company rules can add personal time into the day. For example, a quiet ‘me’ hour at a set time each day, when staff know they can concentrate on quiet tasks and not be disturbed by others. This rule needs to be well communicated and enforced by management so that friction doesn’t develop between employees.

• Use good quality headsets for telephone calls to reduce the need to talk loudly. Avoid speakerphones in the open plan area. At Evoke Projects, we have assisted many clients with open plan office designs that maintain employee privacy. We involve management and staff in the office design process to ensure that every need is considered. Partitions, acoustic screens and multifunctional storage solutions are utilised to maximise space use and privacy. We also find that allowing employees to engage in some degree of personalisation helps to create a feeling of private space. This can be achieved with personal storage caddies and ergonomic office furniture. Even if you don’t want to undertake a full refurbishment, retrofit options can be added to the office to improve privacy

ATO encourages self-managed super funds to get ready for SuperStream All SMSF trustees must be able to receive super contribution payments and information sent electronically when their employer starts using SuperStream. From 1 July 2015, small businesses (those will 19 or less employees) will start implementing SuperStream so they need their employees with self-managed super fund (SMSF) accounts to get ready as well. Philip Hind, ATO’s National Program

Manager, SuperStream, encouraged employees with a self-managed super fund to provide their fund’s details to their employer sooner rather than later to ensure they could continue to make employer contributions. For SuperStream to work efficiently, employees with SMSFs must provide relevant e-commerce details to their employer so they can update their payroll system.

Good result for the Central Coast So in the end the result for the Central Coast has been quite good: One Liberal Member who has given all the indications that he will work for the good of the region. One Labor Member who will work for the good of the region and keep the Government on its toes. And two Labor Members who are there by the skin of their teeth and who the new government will be aiming at over the next four years. All the Baird Government has to do is deliver on their pre-election promises and treat the Central Coast with some respect, unlike the early years of the O’Farrell Government. Except for the period 2007/2011 when David Harris was in parliament and was Assistant Minister for the Central Coast under Premier Rees, the Central Coast has been neglected by successive governments for over 30 years. That should now be in the past.

A plan for the future of Australian manufacturers In particular the research would look at the potential for managers of Australian manufacturing SME's to implement a business philosophy based on the highly successful 'Mittelstand' model in Germany. The decision to go this way was also influenced by a trade mission to Germany that was carried out last year with AIG’s Regional manager, Hunter Central Coast, Adrian Price, a number of Hunter Industry leaders and Dr Anton Kriz of the University of Newcastle. The contingent of regional players visited Germany to gain a better understanding of the Mittelstand model and why it is successful for German companies. Mark’s application and subsequent project was supported by CCMC, AIG, Hunter TAFE and Anton Kriz of UON, Innov8central and HunterNet. The aims of this Fellowship included the following: • Develop better management and leadership skills through the design of a training program based on lessons learned from a sample of Mittelstand companies. • Determine the potential for alliances between Australian manufacturing SME’s and German Mittelstand manufacturers based on ‘open innovation’ and the ability to transfer advanced skills between the participating companies. • Understand the critical success factors that make Mittelstand a world leader in manufacturing. Mark undertook a four week trip to Germany last year and interviewed a selection of stakeholders. As a result of his study tour his report CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW MAY 2015

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10

Titled “The Plan for the Future of Australian Manufacturers: Developing Management, Leadership and Innovation” was published in April this year. His Fellowship research came up with a number of recommendations for the Australian Manufacturing Industry that could be shared. A total of twelve are explained in the body of the 117 page report, but the two major recommendations considered to be essential to fostering the enhancement of skills in Australian Manufacturing SME’s include: • The development of a customised Management and Leadership skills package in preference to ‘generalised’ management courses currently on offer. A framework of these skills are not only detailed in the report, but also linked to the Australian nationally recognized training framework. • Using the Offensive Mittelstand model as a framework, develop a ‘business assessment tool suitable for Australian manufacturing SME’s. Promotion and distribution of the assessment tool can be linked to the new Industry Growth Centre Initiative. SME’s can also decide to self-assess and should be able to access the instrument through any professional associations. Results of this assessment tool can be used to not only develop strategic direction for the SME, but also initiate a workforce development plan. Australian manufacturers, especially small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs), cannot compete with low-cost manufacturing countries. The high cost Mittelstand companies in Germany, recognised as world leaders

Research has identified that Australian manufacturing SMEs would benefit from better management and leadership skills and this report discusses the potential to use Mittelstand management practices as a benchmark to improve these skills. Central Coast Manufacturing Connect plans to run an information session with Mark on his report this year. A date is still to be set. FUNNY BUSINESS

AUTOMATION MEANS SITTING around and watching your work being done for you. If you are over 90, it’s called senility. If you are under 21 it’s called having a mother. A dog ran into a butcher shop and grabbed a roast off the counter. The butcher recognized the dog as belonging to his neighbour who happened to be a lawyer. Incensed at the theft, the butcher called his neighbour and said, “Hey, if your dog stole a roast from my butcher shop, would you be liable for the cost of the meat?” The lawyer replied, “Of course, how much was the roast?”“$7.98.” A few days later the butcher received a check in the mail for $7.98. Attached to it was an invoice that read: Legal Consultation Service: $150. A lion woke up one morning feeling really rowdy and mean. He went out and cornered a small monkey and roared, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” The trembling monkey says, “You are, mighty lion! Later, the lion confronts an ox and fiercely bellows, “Who is the mightiest of all jungle animals?” The terrified ox stammers, “Oh great lion, you are the mightiest animal in the jungle!” On a roll now, the lion swaggers up to an elephant and roars, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” Fast as lightning, the elephant snatches up the lion with his trunk, slams him against a tree half a dozen times leaving the lion feeling like it’d been run over by a safari wagon and ambles away. The lion lets out a moan of pain, lifts his head weakly and hollers after the elephant, “Just because you don’t know the answer, you don’t have to get so upset about it!” Mrs. Monaghan came into the newsroom to pay for her husband’s obituary.

She was told by the kindly newsman that it was a dollar a word and he remembered Pete and wasn’t it too bad about him passing away. She thanked him for his kind words and bemoaned the fact that she only had two dollars. So she wrote out the obituary, “Pete died.” The newsman said he thought old Pete deserved more and he’d give her three more words at no charge. Mrs. Monaghan thanked him and rewrote the obituary: “Pete died. Boat for sale”. An accountant is having a hard time sleeping and so he decides to go to see his doctor. “Doctor, I just can’t get to sleep at night,” complains the man. “Have you tried counting sheep?” inquired the doctor. The accountant replied, “That’s the problem, Doc. I make a mistake and then spend three hours trying to find it!”

A grade school teacher was asking students what their parents did for a living. “Tim, you be first. What does your mother do all day?” Tim stood up and proudly said, “She’s a doctor.” “That’s wonderful. How about you, Amy?” Amy shyly stood up, scuffed her feet and said, “My father is a mailman.” “Thank you, Amy” said the teacher. “What does your parent do, Billy?” Billy proudly stood up and announced, “Nothing. He’s an economist.”

Quote of the month “The purpose of business is to create and keep a customer.”
