New food concept at Fountain Plaza Seeing the changing market demographics and competition challenges that will face Erina in the coming year the Brand Group, owners of Fountain Plaza, have taken the initiative with a move to add a dining and entertainment experience to the precinct centred on Fountain Plaza. The owners have spent hundreds of thousands on a new al fresco dining area to support the adjacent restaurants. The Precinct is already known as a weekday eating venue with Cheeky Charlies operated by Mark and Kirsty Martin and The Bakehouse operated by Paul Mackie at Fountain Plaza and Quattro Restaurant at Platinum operated by the Robertson and Daley Families. Now, in a move to extend this offering to evenings and weekends can be added: Guzman Y Gomez Mexican Taquera – a Mexican food franchise with Franchisees Andrew and Peter Brand opening in Fountain Plaza at the end of September. A promotion offering free burritos all day saw over 5,000 customers visit the Plaza and getting the new restaurant off to a flying start. Early October will see the New York Pizza Bar, operated by the Jones and Gunasinghe Families open for business. To complement these offerings what was formerly Jack’s Tavern has been transformed into Cedars Lebanese Restaurant and Bar operated by Claude El-Azzi and his family
Guzman Y Gomez Franchisees Andrew and Peter Brand with traditional drummers, music and belly dancers on Saturday nights. Food at Fountain Tim Gunasinghe, Property manager for the Brand Group and Managing Director of Commercialhq, said the concept is to offer a unique dining experience with entertainment seven days and nights a week that will attract a totally new market to Erina. “We will promote the whole package as Food at Fountain,” he said.

Putting Coast’s music scene on the map The Central Coast’s music and entertainment industry provides many hundreds of jobs for a whole range of people from recording engineers, producers, musicians, singers and craftsman to those who make and repair instruments. Yet this very important part of the Central Coast economy tends not to be seen as an industry sector. Music and entertainment is a big business and the Central Coast is home to hundreds, if not thousands of creative people who make their living from it. Many household names in the industry began their musical journey in the region or have chosen the Central Coast as their home while they continue that journey. Country music in particular has a strong presence in the region with names like Gina Jeffreys, Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole and Adam Harvey living locally and the region having its own country music community radio station, todayscountry94one. International stars such as Natalie Imbruglia grew up in Berkeley Vale and Alex Lloyd recently decided to call the Central Coast home. The region also boasts a number of world class recording studios which service the local, national and international market. One in particular is that of record producer, songwriter, musician and music industry champion, Rod McCormack. Until now the local music business has been largely an individual pursuit with many young people playing irregular gigs for little or no pay just to get noticed and possibly get that first big break.
Gina Jeffreys Now, something is being done in a bid to harness local talent, provide artists opportunities and develop careers in the music business. As part of the region’s innovation program, a new organisation called Innov8Central Music has been formed to put some structure into the local music industry and ensure the potential is realised. Innov8Central Music, an arm of Innov8Central (an initiative of the Commonwealth Government’s Innovative Regions programme with the Central Coast being one of only eleven regions across Australia selected to participate) has announced the launch of its first major pro-
ject, The Coast Sessions. In an effort to develop and support the music industry on the Central Coast, The Coast Sessions is set to discover the latest generation of talent via an original music competition and album. Innov8Central Music (ICM) is a grass-roots initiative involving all elements of the music industry across the region. It will initially operate under the governance structures of Innov8Central, with members representing varying elements and levels of the industry – from musicians and producers through to those with strong business and strategic backgrounds.

ICM, still in its early stages welcomes the participation of interested parties, from independent solo performers to major record companies who can aid the group in its overarching objective - to establish a fully funded professional office, to implement a range of programs and educational activities to champion the music industry on the Coast. The current focus of ICM is the competition and album component of The Coast Sessions which will provide the framework from which to grow the greater vision of the initiative – to develop a more formal industry model and create economic and cultural opportunities for both local people and the region.
David Bacon, Chairman of Innov8Central Music said, “Our vision is that ICM will be the ‘go to’ place for all music in the region. It will be the authority on local venues, performers, musicians and education. We will promote local artists and their interests and provide a voice for the Central Coast music industry to lobby government and influence policy. “We will promote the music industry to the media, politicians and the public and assist with the marketing and promotion of the industry, showcasing our local talent regionally, nationally and internationally that’s what this project is all about”. The Coast Sessions competition calls for musicians and artists who are residents of
Gosford or Wyong Local Government Areas to enter a piece of original music, of any genre or musical form, for a chance to earn one of 16 places on The Coast Sessions double album, which will be released for sale in early 2014. The double album will consist of one CD featuring up and coming artists, offering a stepping stone in launching a successful career, alongside another CD featuring renowned Central Coast acts. Discussing how this project is bigger than just a competition David Bacon said, “This is about more than one individual, rather we want to elevate our artists and shine a light on the whole region. “This is an amazing opportunity for local musicians and artists to showcase their art. The competition will consist of two rounds of judging in order to secure the first 14 artists to appear on the CD. These judging rounds will be undertaken by a panel of local and national industry experts. The final two places on the album will be secured following a Wild Card event and public vote”. Entries to The Coast Sessions are now open and close 18 October 2013. Will wall-to-wall Liberals be good for business and the Coast? With this representation one would expect big things to be happening that would reverse the sagging Central Coast economy. Like the Gosford Waterfront development – killed when the Libs got into government and still dead. Okay the Public School is going but what will go in its place? Right now nothing! The only time we hear from any of these Members is when there is something warm and fuzzy to report. At council level we are happy to report that Gosford with Liberal control and Wyong with Liberal leaning councillors are both actively pursuing every option they can to get the economy moving. But they need the support of the State Government and now the Feds. Voters on the Central Coast are now more savvy. They liked the opportunity to vote for Independents Lawrie McKinna and Nathan Bracken. Their votes had a profound effect on the election outcome and for that we must thank John Singleton for financing their campaign. Singo has a passionate belief in the Central Coast and as he said, “The major parties have taken the Coast for granted and the bastards would never take the Central Coast for granted again”.

Finally, read our Cover Story this month. The Central Coast has some wonderful talent across music and the arts. Taken as a whole this is an industry that is contributing substantially to our economy. It’s now eighteen months to the next State Election. Will the O’Farrell Government move to make life a bit easier for business. Or will they chase the micro-vote by avoiding any form of controversy.

There was a time, not that long ago, when the Central Coast was a solid Labor voting area. Except for a State Seat centred on Terrigal /Avoca all State and Federal Members was Labor. So what happened? Simple really! The ALP took us for granted. Plonked their Labor mates into blue ribbon seats and treated our region with contempt. For the past forty years the only Labor representatives who had a genuine interest in the Coast was Federal Member for Robertson Barry Cohen from 1969 to 1990, a tireless worker for the region and State Member for Wyong from 2007 to 2011, David Harris. David Harris did more for the Coast in his four short years than all of his predecessors did in forty years. Labor is now out of it. Although, there is a possibility that the hard working former Member for Robertson, Deborah O’Neill may get Bob Carr’s Senate seat. And now we are into a Liberal Era. We are represented federally by Lucy Wicks in Robertson and Karen McNamara in Dobell. Both were preselected by Head Office but that aside we do congratulate them and look forward to the new government honouring the promises it made during the campaign. CCBR will certainly be watching this. In the NSW Parliament the Coast now has four representatives, Chris Hartcher, Member for Terrigal and Minister for the Central Coast, Chris Holstein, Member for Gosford, Darren Spence, Member for The Entrance and Darren Webber, Member for Wyong.

The greater Warnervale area including the growth suburbs of Hamlyn Terrace and Woongarrah is the fastest growing area in Wyong Shire. Besides the Woolworths approval, the re-opening of the newly constructed Minnesota Road in September will enable greater access to the eventual Town Centre, while the State Government is getting to work after $10 million was allocated for the planning and construction of the Sparks Road/Warnervale Town Centre entry road intersection. “I am told this work will be completed by the end of next year,” Mayor Eaton said. In addition, the first development of the Warnervale Town Centre was approved by Council last month, with Yeramba Estates to start construction of a $19 million,PRELIMINARY 125 block sub division that will give residents a variety of housing options and prices. New shops at Wadalba open for business A $1.3 million expansion of the Wadalba shopping centre is now complete with ten new tenancies open for business. The new business includes a pharmacy, medical centre and retail shops to be serviced by an ATM and a separate car park with 52 extra car parking spaces. Mayor Doug Eaton officially opened the new shops with developer John Stevens Managing Director of Stevens Group. “The layout of these new shops and medical centre has been designed to integrate with and complement the exist-
ing supermarket,” Mayor Eaton said. The expansion to the shopping centre, which already included a Coles, was approved in October 2011. Mayor Eaton said that the refurbishment is in line with the Retail Centres Strategy, adopted by Council. A review was undertaken to look at the effects of the Shire’s projected population growth and forecast spending. It recommended that Village Centres for San Remo, Ourimbah, Wadalba East, Long Jetty and Lake Munmorah be improved and

priority be given to the Warnervale Town Centre. These centres would complement existing shopping and town centres such as Tuggerah, Wyong, The Entrance, Toukley, Lake Haven, Bateau Bay, Killarney Vale, Chittaway and Budgewoi. “The purpose of the Retail Centres Strategy is to identify the current and future demand for retail, commercial and centre support across the Shire,” Mayor Eaton said. “This expansion is testament to how well this Strategy is working.”

Manufacturing has a future on the Coast R. R. Taylor Pty. Ltd. (Taylors) recently facilitated the re-birth of a high end operating theatre table (the Image 777 Carbon Fibre OT Table) they have previously manufactured on behalf of an Australian medical devices company. This company dropped the local product some six years back and took to importing an alternative product. The product has good market potential and so through his international connections Mr Kaye orchestrated the sale to a large international medical equipment company which is seeking Australian made products for the operating theatre area for sale into Asia. The same company is looking to transfer the manufacture of some of their existing products to Australia (through Taylors), again to leverage of the quality aspect. These will be available to both the Australian and international markets. Taylors is a privately owned manufacturing business with in excess of 80 years operation, relocated to Somersby some ten years back. Like most Australian based manufacturing businesses, Taylors has faced difficult time over recent years with the high Australian dollar and local overheads. At one time, they had to abandon some 40% of their business when faced with import competition that saw prices fall by 51%. These conditions have reinforced Taylor’s decision to focus on being a “solutions provider” and not just a traditional machine shop. Today, in excess of 70% total sales involve Taylors supplying a totally manufactured, tested and packaged product to their customer’s specifications, ready for that

Mr Kaye said contracts like this will provide jobs for the local workforce and opportunities for sub-contractor suppliers to participate. “Given a continuing reasonable Aussie dollar, being sub $0.90, we see our future in the Asian market,” he said. Deal to acquire MetaMizer assets Meanwhile RR Taylor has announced the acquisition in mid-September of the MetaMizer assets. After initially manufac-
turing components, RR Taylor had the opportunity to acquire the IP and technology associated with the MetaMizer from Medivac Pty Ltd. Mr Kaye said that this is a unique technology – clean simultaneous shredding and sterilisation of clinical waste with a compact footprint that has been in use in medical facilities across the world since 2002. The clinical waste is loaded into the MetaMizer via a standard 120 or 240 litre wheelie bin which is weighed, scanned and then emptied into the inlet chamber by an automated system incorporating an ergonomically safe materials handling device.

Cusicks buy IGA East Gosford
York Street East Gosford The Cusick Family, who own the Elanora Hotel at East Gosford, have bought the East Gosford IGA Store and Liquor Shop. Formerly owned by David and Sandy Frazer and their family for some twenty years the supermarket and liquor store has an annual turnover of around $5 million. The purchase includes the freehold property and firmly cements the Cusicks as the major property owner in East Gosford with two significant land holdings. Commenting on the purchase Nicholas Cusick said they saw it as a solid business investment in a strong shopping strip. The Cusicks father, Malcolm, built the Elanora Hotel in 1968 after selling the Gosford Hotel which he built in 1932. The Elanora is managed by Damien

Commenting on the sale, Graham McMullens from Argyle Estates Business Brokers said, “from the time we listed the business we had multiple buyer. The Victoria Street shopping strip is undoubtedly the most successful shopping area on the Central Coast having seen a steady growth since the opening of the Bendigo Bank Branch in 2000. In fact the opening of the Bendigo Bank, an initiative of the East Gosford Chamber of Commerce, was the catalyst for the renewal of East Gosford. Up market cafes and coffee shops abound and along with fashion and homewares boutiques are now
attracting a new younger demographic with money in their pockets. Vacancies are few and when they do occur there is a ready demand by traders who see opportunities in the up market strip. The last months saw the opening of The Food Shop which is an extension of Ooomph Cafe which has operated for the past eight years from Gumtree Lane behind the main strip. Partners Andrew Mansfield and Adam Harrigan had the opportunity to take a shop directly opposite Ooomph giving them access to Victoria Street. The Food Shop now sells the range of organic foods giving more space for their coffee and cafe business. Also opening last month was Bonne Journee Patisserie by Helen Vassiliadis who learned her trade at Le Cordon Bleu Sydney.

Transport contract and truck sold Wally Radmanovic of Forresters Beach has sold his transport business after ten years of operation and is now looking forward to retiring. Mr Radmanovic has a transport supply agreement with Newcastle based Industrial Galvanisers to move galvanised products from Hexham to Mona Vale and backload for black steel each day. Iguana’s set to reopen Gosford waterfront will spring into life again, possibly before Christmas, with the re-opening of the former Iguana Joe’s night spot this time as a restaurant. Sydney property planning and project management specialists, EG Property Group have announced that they have started work on a million dollar renovation of the property that will see major improvements to the building’s interior. Below we outline potential changes that may be introduced and their practical implications. • proving the Fair Work Commission and considering the introduction of an independent appeal jurisdiction. This may increase the ability of employers to defend unfair dismissal claims and increase the predictability of these cases. • Ensuring Individual Flexibility Arrangements can be used even where there is an enterprise agreement. Employers should take this opportunity to review their enterprise agreements and ensure they are leveraging flexibility arrangements to their full capacity. • A paid parental scheme (paid by the government) providing 26 weeks paid parental leave to mothers which is tied to their remuneration and not tied to the minimum wage. Individuals would also receive superannuation during this period. You may want to consider the implications of that scheme on any policy you currently have in place. • Regarding workplace bullying the Liberal Party has proposed that before employees can access the Fair Work Commission via a stop bullying order they must attempt to
resolve the issue through mechanisms in their workplace. Employers can enjoy some protection by reviewing their existing internal complaints system. If one does not exist, this is the ideal time to implement an internal complaints and investigation procedure. • Restricting the rights of access of industrial bodies to workplaces. This may involve removing the right of entry to hold discussions and replacing it with something like a right of entry once an employee requests the industrial representative to enter. • Re-establishing the Australia Building and Construction Commission to administer a national code and guidelines in an effort to tackle undesirable industrial association action in the building industry. • Tailor services provided by the Fair Work Ombudsman for small business and ensure there are increased resources to help small business. In summary according to official Liberal policy it is not likely that employers should expect massive changes which are difficult to adapt to, but rather some minor changes with which compliance will be relatively easy.
Strategic Planning Critical to Business Success “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” Just because you are a small business doesn’t mean that strategic planning isn’t for you. In fact this aspect of business planning is even more essential for a small business as it navigates the vagaries of the market place and what drives it. The small business strategic planning process has two essential elements: devising a strategy and changing it when necessary. While some successful small businesses have formal strategic planning sessions, others, run by savvy, intuitive entrepreneurs who really know their markets, do not. The importance, therefore, is about having the right strategy and not so much about how one achieves that. Small businesses have limited resources, so in most cases it does not make sense to compete in broad market segments dominated by big players. Instead, they should focus on smaller, niche markets they have a better chance of winning. In a recent interview with IBTimes Charles W. Hofer, Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship at Kennesaw State University said, “Winning means dominating. Multiple studies have shown that a company's profitability is highly-correlated with its market share; the differences in profitability between the market leader and other players are usually huge.” Therefore, it is better to dominate a few small niches rather than having a small market share in many broad markets, said Hofer.
Moreover, a common path for small businesses to get big is when the small niche market they dominate becomes big. Once a specific niche market is identified, a small business should focus its energy on satisfying the specific needs of the customers in that market, said Hofer. When to Change the Strategic Plan A sound strategic plan, however, does not remain relevant forever. In mature markets, a strategic plan can be valid for as long as a decade or more. In more dynamic markets, which are the case for
many small businesses, a strategic plan's shelf life is usually a lot shorter, said Hofer. There are several warning signs that potentially spell the need to change one's strategic plan. Declining sales from a small business' core customers is one. A change in market position by competitors, entry of new competitors and the evolution of the market are others. “Strategic Planning is a process by which we can envision the future and develop the necessary procedures and operations to influence and achieve that future.” - Clark Crouch

Chamber’s concerns about government land use policy The NSW Business Chamber, says it has serious concerns that the NSW Government’s Strategic Regional Land Use Policy and amendment to the State Environmental Planning Policy will risk the livelihoods of businesses and their employees, by ignoring the need for NSW to rapidly develop its own gas industry. “In the face of a recent announcement on the issue we do not see a plan to secure increased gas supplies for industry and domestic users, which is absolutely essential to help moderate price spikes expected in 2016 and to provide more certainty for future business investment,” said Stephen
Cartwright, NSW Business Chamber CEO. “Solving this issue is vital to maintaining and growing jobs in NSW, and to keeping energy costs down for residential and commercial users. “It must be dealt with in a way that looks at the overall needs of the people of NSW. “This revised policy seems to fly in the face of the Government’s original commitment to resolve this issue in a way that ensures the gas industry can develop appropriately within sensible limits and also pre-empts any advice of the Chief Scientist on exclusion zones. “The Strategic Regional Land Use Policy

An Irish farmer named Shaun had a car accident. He was hit by a large truck. In court, the Truck Company’s hot-shot solicitor was questioning Shaun. “Didn’t you say to the Police at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine? ‘asked the solicitor. Shaun responded: ‘Well, I’ll tell you what happened. I’d just loaded my fav’rit cow, Bessie, into da... ‘ ‘I didn’t ask for any details’, the solicitor interrupted. ‘Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?’ Shaun said, ‘Well, I’d just got Bessie into da trailer and I was drivin’ down da road.... ‘ The solicitor interrupted again and said, ‘Your Honour, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the police on the scene that he was fine. Now several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.’ By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Shaun’s answer and said to the solicitor: ‘I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favourite cow, Bessie’. Shaun thanked the Judge and proceeded. ‘Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my fav’rit cow, into de trailer and was drivin’ her down de road when this huge truck and trailer came tundering tru a stop sign and hit me trailer right in da side. I was trown into one ditch and Bessie was trown into da udder. By Jaysus I was hurt, very bad like, and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moanin’ and groanin’. I knew she was in terrible pain just by her groans. “Shortly after da accident, a policeman on a motorbike turned up. He could hear Bessie moanin’ and groanin’ too, so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her condition, he took out his gun and shot her
between the eyes. Den da policeman came across de road, gun still in hand, looked at me, and said, ‘How are you feelin’?’ ‘Now wot da Heck would you say?* Contributed by David Chandler OAM I recently changed doctors and after two visits and exhaustive tests he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age of 70. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t help but ask, “Do you think I shall live to be 85?” “Well,” he said, “Do you smoke, drink, eat fatty foods and spend a lot of time out in the sun playing golf, hiking or cycling?” “No, I don’t do any of those things,” I said. “Then why on earth do you want to live to be 85?” he said.
