Homecoming ’07 Events 10

CCCKC to celebrate ‘Smart Move’ during Homecoming ’07 event Alumni from the College’s Kansas City campus can mark the end of an era for Cleveland during October’s Homecoming 2007 event. “Smart Move: Farewell to Rockhill” will combine the fun and camaraderie of an annual fall gathering with the buzz of excitement about a new campus. CCCKC will say “goodbye” to its Rockhill location after more than 30 years of growth and memories. The Homecoming celebration Oct. 5-7 will be the last major event at the Rockhill campus, as the College moves to its new location at year’s end.

The party is in the works at CCCLA as the campus prepares to host its “Coming Home 2007” celebration with a “¡Fiesta!” theme. The party mindset comes on the heels of the ongoing renovations on campus, and serves to honor the old and celebrate the new. Those in attendance will enjoy a Mexican-themed luncheon and will be able to fulfill their annual relicensure hours in X-ray and extremity adjusting with instructors Dr. David Gendreau and Dr. Mark Charrette. A large crowd is expected, so be sure to register soon. L

ife for me has always been organized around the academic calendar. As a child, I witnessed my parents teaching in the classroom and working as administrators. I experienced the busy weeks of each term, and the short breaks in between – knowing that a new term would mean bidding farewell to our graduates, ready to start their professional lives, while saying hello to a new group of students, ready to begin their studies. Given that my grandparents, Dr. C.S. Cleveland Sr. and Dr. Ruth Cleveland, were 1917 Palmer College graduates, and my great grandmother, Dr. Sylva Ashworth, was a 1910 Palmer grad, as a young child I made annual pilgrimages in August to Davenport, Iowa, for the Palmer Lyceum. They taught me by example that no matter how busy one’s schedule, no matter how long it had been since graduation, a trip back to one’s alma mater was a time to reminisce, reconnect and recharge. And that’s what I’d like each of you to do this Fall – join us on campus for our annual Homecoming celebrations. Your memories may include that one classmate who always got the top score on exams, or that one professor who gave the most difficult exams you’d ever taken. Perhaps thinking about your chiropractic college classmates makes you laugh out loud. Come join us at Homecoming — you might get to reminisce with some of those old classmates that you haven’t seen for years. We’d love for you not only to reminisce with your classmates, but also to reconnect with the College. Several years ago, Dynamic Chiropractic surveyed doctors of chiropractic about their involvement with state and national professional associations, the chiropractic colleges they graduated from and their practice management consulting groups. Sadly, chiropractors reported low levels of involvement with the associations and their colleges. I know that your families and practices represent your first priorities, and that’s as it should be. But Cleveland is your College, too. The College is here not only for the students who sit in our lecture halls today, but for those who’ve come before them and for those who will follow. We’d like to remain your educational powerbase, your source of information, learning and inspiration – so join us at Homecoming 2007 and see how we’ve grown, progressed and changed for the better – yet have retained our balanced approach to the science, philosophy and art of chiropractic. You will see much to be proud of when you visit both the Los Angeles and Kansas City campuses. In Los Angeles, we’ve undergone an extensive remodel of the building, creating a pleasing and contemporary environment with a state of the art Health Center facility. And, in Kansas City, we are planning the move across town to begin classes in our new campus in Overland Park, Kan., in January 2008. Come join us and meet our faculty, learn about the College research accomplishments and the advancements in the profession, rekindle old friendships and meet new friends, and share in the pride and progress of your alma mater. Indeed, these are exciting times as we continue to develop programs that will serve our students, our alumni and our communities. Register now and come and be part of this excitement. Let it recharge you – for your practice and for the profession.

Recent Examples: My favorite memories revolve around the camaraderie and friendships made during the three years I attended CCCKC. In between the countless hours in class, the midnight study groups (in John Lemmon’s basement or at KU Med’s library) and the exhausting exam weeks were the funny pictures, “Top Ten” lists, sporting events and trips to various bars and restaurants. There were the moments of joy (the births of kids) and sorrow (the death of Dr. Gus Peters), but mostly great memories to last a lifetime. — Dr. Chip Gowan ’95

In her seating arrangement, I was to take the only seat that had been placed upon the stage and can still vividly recall the skeleton hanging next to my chair. Halfway through the test, stress levels high, I moved my chair and one leg fell off the stage. Arms flailing and feet kicking, I somehow managed to grab hold of the skeleton only to fall down with it, shocking the whole class into fits of laughter! — Dr. Douglass Knapp ’03

Monumental event to unfold

T

Kansas City The College and its alumni associations are continuously exploring opportunities to be of greater service to alumni and association members. If you have suggestions about how we can better serve you, please don’t hesitate to e-mail or call us. Dr. Linda Klinginsmith-Tilford, CCCKC Alumni Association president, can be reached via e-mail at kc.alumnirelations@cleveland.edu or by leaving a message at (816) 501-0122. his special edition of the Clevelander has been prepared to arrive shortly before a monumental event unfolds for the College. October 5-7 will mark the last Homecoming celebration at the Rockhill campus. This final event is sure to be a wonderful affair that will yield many lasting memories. As the College’s remaining days at the Rockhill campus slip away, it is only fitting that we, as alumni, make a final appearance for posterity. It’s the site where our profession continued to grow and prosper, due in part to the efforts of the educators who walked the halls at 6401 Rockhill Road. Although the events of the past will not be forgotten, the focus now shifts to what lies ahead for the College at its new site in suburban Kansas City. The Summer 2007 issue of the Clevelander included a story that announced CCCKC’s upcoming move. The story was accompanied by several photos that really captured the beautiful surroundings of the Overland Park location. While touring the new campus in April, the Alumni Association was shown the layout inside, and enjoyed the sights from the hilltop courtyard. It offers a beautiful skyline view of Overland Park. When you return for Homecoming, be sure to visit this fabulous new site. This year’s Homecoming festivities will honor classes from years ending in “7.” If that’s you, be sure to remind your peers so your class is well represented. There will be a host of events throughout the weekend, including a banquet at the Overland Park Marriott on Friday. Our annual Alumni Board meeting will also be held. I promise to keep it short. Hope to see you all in October for this momentous occasion! — Dr. Linda Klinginsmith-Tilford ’76, president, CCCKC Alumni Association

Fond farewell being planned

“H

omecoming 2007: Farewell to Rockhill” is more than an event. It is an opportunity to rekindle friendships and a chance to show your Cleveland spirit. Join us as we celebrate 30 years on the Rockhill campus and the history and tradition of Cleveland Chiropractic College. Some of the events of this year’s Homecoming include the Foundation Golf Classic, “Farewell to Rockhill” luncheon, Time Capsule sealing, “Smart Move” celebration dinner, wellness walk, ice cream social, annual Alumni Association business meeting, 24 hours of continuing education and tours of the new Overland Park campus. Lifetime members of the Alumni Association are invited to a special update with Dr. Carl Cleveland III. I am proud that our continuing education program this year is showcasing some of the talent from the Cleveland College family. All presenters are Cleveland alums, current Cleveland College faculty or both. The program includes six four-hour programs covering Health Promotion, Sports Chiropractic, On-Field Assessment, Boundaries, X-ray and Diagnosis. This is a time to come and share your memories and stories from when you were a student. It is these stories that connect us and speak to us in ways that are deeply memorable. This is also a chance to explore the new base that will be serving Cleveland students, the Kansas City community and you, our alumni. If you are not able to make it to Homecoming, please send me a business card. I will put it in the Time Capsule being sealed at the new campus, and that is scheduled to be opened during Homecoming 2032. I look forward to seeing you soon. — Dr. John Nab ’94, director, CCCKC Office of Alumni Services

‘Coming Home’ to a ¡Fiesta!

W

e are often asked, “Why did the Alumni Association change the name of its annual event from ‘Homecoming’ to ‘Coming Home?’” In 2004, when CCCLA began its major renovation, the alumni board elected to hold its yearly celebration on campus as a way for graduates to “come home” and see the new changes. Since then, we have seen a dramatic increase in attendees, and our goal is for continued growth as we add new members. “Coming Home 2007” will all take place on one day. Attendees can relax Sunday, knowing they fulfilled their relicensure hours on Saturday. The program has received approval in California and will feature five hours of X-ray and seven hours of extremity adjusting, taught by Drs. David Gendreau and Mark Charrette, respectively. This year’s theme is “¡Fiesta!” and we hope you enjoy it as much as the previous themed events. Naturally, there will be a Mexicanstyle buffet lunch in addition to a continental breakfast and a light dinner meal. The Awards luncheon will celebrate our Lifetime members, as well as the “Alum of the Year” and the John K. Raithel Memorial Scholarship recipients. At the association’s annual meeting, past accomplishments and goals for the future will be discussed. Best of all, attendees will be able to reconnect with their classmates, network with new alumni and meet CCCLA students, the doctors of the future. We anticipate more than 100 attendees, so the event will be held in a canopy outside. I look forward to seeing you at this exciting event. Whether you attended last year’s program or if you haven’t been to campus in a while, we’ll be delighted to see you return to the place which was your “home” for those important years. — Dr. Claire O’Neill ’95, president, CCCLA Alumni Association

Annual event looks to future

A

t this year’s “Coming Home 2007” program, the Alumni Association will highlight the achievements of the past year and discuss future goals. Specifically, goals to pursue new members to join the board of directors and bringing in new Lifetime members. While the present board has been tireless in encouraging involvement and support, they believe it’s time for others to come forward and help take the association to a new level of success. The alumni board works collaboratively with the College’s Office of Alumni Relations in the creation and implementation of programs, events and projects that benefit graduates and enhance the experience of current students. Currently, meetings are held once a month and are coordinated around the schedules of board members, all of whom have busy practices. The board also meets with incoming students at the start of each trimester to welcome them into the College and the profession. Please let us know if you’d like to be a part of this. The association’s annual meeting will take place at “Coming Home 2007” and there will be a call for graduates who wish to join the board. Again, the time involved is only a couple hours monthly and a day on campus each trimester. More importantly, your input will help the board set in motion new ideas to stimulate increased involvement in the association and with the institution, to include referring new students to the College. I want to say “thanks” for all the wonderful responses I’ve received following my emails this year. If you haven’t heard from me, please get in touch so you can be included in future CCCLA updates. Hope to hear from you and see you in October.

Los Angeles The College and its alumni associations are continuously exploring opportunities to be of greater service to alumni and association members. Farewell to Rockhill!

I

t’s always a mixed bag of conflicting emotions when you finish a really great book. The joy of completing the story is tempered by the knowledge that you really are finished, and you’ll have to put it back on the shelf. While the images and memories of the story will always remain, there is the inevitable feeling of loss. That is, unless you have a Pulitzer-Prize-winner to crack open right away. So it is with Homecoming 2007 on the Kansas City campus. There will be the emotional celebration of saying “Farewell to Rockhill,” the site the College has called home since 1977. But it’s a “Smart Move” as the College starts a 50-year run at its spectacular new campus in Overland Park. Celebrations and events will take place at both campuses, as well as at the Overland Park Marriott. The dates are Oct. 5-7 — but plan to arrive a day early and tee off in the annual Cleveland College Foundation Golf Classic, held for the first time at picturesque Deer Creek Golf Course, on Oct. 4. Deer Creek is just minutes from the new campus. (To register, see page 9.) Homecoming festivities begin on the Rockhill campus on Friday and seminars continue there through Sunday. A total of 24 continuing education units (CEU) are available. There are also 12-unit packages for Alumni Association members and non-members alike. Presenters are Drs. Jeremy Rogers, Jeff Miller, Charles Dorlac, Will Evans, Ben Stiles and Nathan Uhl. They’ll speak on topics ranging from “Sports Management” and “On-field Assessment” to “Xray” and “Diagnosis” to “Health Promotion” and “Boundaries Training.” Highlights of the weekend will include Friday night’s “Smart Move Celebration Dinner” at the Marriott. Also, a “State of the College” update will be given, reunion doctors and Lifetime Alumni members will be honored, and the 2007 Alum of the Year will be recognized. And don’t miss your chance to see the new campus! A “Wellness Walk” and “Ice Cream Social” will be held there Saturday evening. Tours of the campus and placement of the Cleveland Chiropractic College “Time Capsule” will also take place that night. So as we close one book – make sure to stop by and sign the “Farewell to Rockhill” banner – we with great anticipation open another. The first pages of “A Smart Move” to the new campus will be penned at Homecoming 2007. Come and be part of history. by Alan Morgan

Coming Home: A Cleveland ¡Fiesta!

H

omecoming is once again upon us as we have cycled through the preceding months at a pace that seems like light speed. The summer season, and all that it offers, has transitioned into fall. Baseball games, barbecues and warm summer nights are giving way to football games, hot chocolate and a cool evening breeze. It’s time to pull that favorite, old sweater down from the shelf because it’s something familiar that just feels good. The same can be said for events like CCCLA’s “Coming Home 2007” celebration, as alumni return to the College to see those from their past and wrap themselves in the good feelings associated with lifetime friendships. It’s about re-establishing contact with those who have slipped from our minds and our address books. For some, it is an opportunity to visit with professors we never thought we’d miss. For others, it’s a way to relive old memories that keep us all connected. What better way to make that happen than with food, friends and a ¡Fiesta! — this year’s theme. “Coming Home 2007” will take place Saturday, Oct. 6, and relicensure hours approved by the California State Board of Chiropractic Examiners can be gained all in one day. The program includes five hours of X-ray taught by Dr. David Gendreau and seven hours of extremity adjusting taught by Dr. Mark Charrette. Michael Brown, executive director of student and alumni relations, said the modified format will benefit the attendees. “This year’s ‘Coming Home’ event is being held on one day rather than two so our D.C.s have Sunday to spend with their family and friends,” Brown said. “We look forward to welcoming alumni ‘home’ as we continue to build the association’s “Lifetime Membership” roster, as well as increase alumni involvement with the College.” The one-day event will have a south-of-the-border feel, with decorations and a menu to reflect the Mexican theme. Breakfast and dinner will be served, but the highlight will be a buffet-style Mexican lunch. Previous “Coming Home” celebrations have had themes ranging from “Disco Fever” to a “Hawaiian Luau.” The themed gatherings may have been a contributing factor in the renewed interest in the College among alumni. As a result, there has been an increase in attendance at this annual alumni event. Brown said more than 100 are expected to attend this year. by Scott Vater

The Alumni Association board of directors will once again be in attendance at the weekend event. Activities this year include the awards luncheon during which the ever-growing list of Alumni Association “Lifetime Members” will be honored. The association will also announce the “Alum of the Year” and name the recipient of the John K. Raithel Memorial Scholarship. The “Coming Home” festivities will also be used as a platform for the board to share with alumni what they have accomplished during the year, and plan for what lies ahead. Brown said they are always willing to involve other alums in that process. “Input and suggestions by other alums will help the board set into motion new ideas which will motivate increased involvement in the association and with the institution, to include referring new students to the College,” Brown said. The weekend will not be all about business as there will also be the chance for more casual activities, such as networking and socializing. The ability to network effectively in different social

settings is a skill that no professional should be without. It’s simply the best way to gain important information about your field from fellow practitioners or other individuals close to the profession. In so doing, you may be able to save yourself from the pitfalls that can sidetrack even the savviest D.C.’s business plans. Whether it’s making new acquaintances or sharing memories with old friends, both offer their own rewards. It is hoped that when the College’s current students reach alumni status, they will do their part to become the welcoming voice of the profession to students who follow them. Increasing the volume and frequency of the message of chiropractic that has helped it endure throughout the years. Join us for “Coming Home ’07” to see where the chiropractors of tomorrow are preparing today. See the extensive renovations on campus. And finally, show current students that no matter what happens after graduation, they are always part of CCCLA. And because of that, they can always come home.
