WEEK 9 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) The word perspective originated from a Latin word “perspectiva”, meaning “seeing through”. Perspective is supported to be the way people see through things, not necessarily geometrically correct, that as from a window through everything is as the reality.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Considering the construction of human’s eyes, the field of vision is spheroidal. And also the fact that human’s eyes are concave and constantly moving, the view people see can be slightly unlike the reality. However the homogeneous space is more mechanical when a single eye view is assumed, capturing people’s view.

EUPHEMIA: TRADING CITIES 1

Interpretation of Story Analysed from the Calvino’s writing, the trading city does the ware trading during the day while merchants talk to each other and tell different stories, sitting by the fire during nighttime. Trading days for Bazaars are around the time of every solstice and equinox in a year, taking place in the Great Khan’s empire. The contrast of tone between day and nighttime led to the development of 2 scenes, when daytime in one scene and nighttime in the other. During daytime people are seen trading, giving Marco Polo a light and cheerful feeling whereas during nighttime people are sitting down telling stories from their experiences, giving Marco Polo a heavier emotion, making him consider as in the story that it is a city where memory is also traded. There is also a sense of the journey of life that personal experiences are modelling people into different people and memories (the way people remember their past experiences) are changing when exchanged. Depicted as “in the Great Khan’s Empire”, Islamic elements are suggested in the city. The time in a year as Summer solstice is chosen, representing one of the four solstices and equinoxes, is shown by dividing the Quad one part slightly more than the other like the sun is shining on the tropic of Cancer. Water element is depicted as merchants come from different places by ships and live in areas with rivers or deserts with camels also discribed.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC

A dock is added, extending the Quad, for merchants that come from the sea to berth their ships and unload their ware.

4

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS

As shown in the isometric view with notations, the left part is the daytime scene and the right part on the contrary. The path showing Marco Polo’s movement is also depicted as the chronology in the view, from the market is just opening in the morning as he was walking into the Quad and when it is closing around sunset when he exits the Quad. The lines dividing time, day or night, also divide the lighting, darker while sunset and lighter while sunrise. Where the people and bonfire are is also clearly shown as well as the contrast of tone (light or heavy emotion).

5

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2

Perspective 1 is when Marco Polo looked at the Quad as the first impression just before he enters the scene during sunrise when the market is starting. This perspective can well capture the view of the dock and daytime side of the Quad.

Perspective 2 on the on the contrary is depicting the nighttime side of the Quad when Marco Polo is leaving the market after a day in it during sunset.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

It is shown in the scene a Moorish decorated market where Moorish merchants are trading with a background of ships and the sea. The lighting shown represents the time during sunrise. Merchants have come wanting to sell their wares and people are starting to come, bargaining for good they want. Marco Polo in it is feeling easy and cheerful.

Scene of perspective 2 shows when people are tired after a busy day and sitting down or lying back, talking to each other or sitting quietly by themselves, by the fire. The background of desert and camels represents where some merchants are from and the stories they are telling as well as the memories they are exchanging with other people. The Quad is also Moorish styled decorated.

WEEK 4 READING: TITLE OF READING

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) A major difference is that autographic practices are authentic and not open to simulate while allographic practices is notated for exact same object depicted.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Because as time goes, information changes, new technologies are used and new notations will be needed. Architects need new representational techniques to mediate and fit in the flow of time.
