Welcome to Midlands Gives Our lives would be very different without nonprofit organizations. From the hospitals we are born in, to the arts and culture events we attend and the animal shelters where we find our family pets, nonprofit organizations impact our community and our personal lives every day. Within the pages of this Midlands Gives Guide, you will find over 250 local nonprofits that touch our lives. And, on May 5th, we will have the opportunity to come together as one community to give back to these nonprofits through Midlands Gives. Midlands Gives is a 24-hour online giving challenge presented by Central Carolina Community Foundation. Last year, during our inaugural event, we asked our community to embrace the campaign and they responded beyond our wildest
dreams. In 24 hours, over $704,000 was raised for 150 local charities. Most importantly, we proved that when our community comes together as one, we can make great things happen. As the ‘voice of philanthropy’ in the Midlands, Central Carolina Community Foundation recognizes the importance of giving back to our community. With 30 years of grants, now totaling over $100 million, we take pride in providing community members with the tools and knowledge needed to invest locally. Philanthropy - giving time, talent and treasure - can provide the stimulus that helps connect people to their community. And, as more people are connected to the place they live, work and play, the more they give. The more they give, the more robust their community becomes,
Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees
attracting more people who give. And, so the ‘philanthropic pie’ grows. So, on behalf of the Community Foundation’s board of trustees and staff, we invite you to join us again on May 5th for Midlands Gives. Your gifts will help connect our community and make it a place we are proud to call home. Cheers!

Aflac Gives Back Philanthropy and volunteerism are a daily part of Aflac’s corporate culture, from the top throughout the entire workforce. And, their commitment to community service makes a difference. For the second year, Aflac is making an impact in the Midlands by generously sponsoring Midlands Gives. Aflac has supported Midlands Gives from the beginning. In 2014, when Central Carolina Community Foundation approached Aflac about participating in the brand new giving day concept, they generously sponsored six Power Hour Prizes and 24 Golden Tickets Prizes, magnifying the gifts of many donors throughout the day. This year, in addition to sponsoring the prizes listed above, the employees are
participating in a contest to raise money for a Midlands Gives nonprofit. All 900 employees are invited to purchase an Aflac plush duck, wearing a Midlands Gives hangtag and lime green neckerchief, and take photos of their duck around their offices. To enter the contest, employees post the photos on social media, tagging #Aflacduckonashelf and #MidlandsGives. The winning employee, randomly selected from the social media entries, will select the nonprofit to receive the duck sale proceeds.
With more than 900 employees here in Columbia, Aflac is surely magnifying philanthropy for a great cause. 2015 Midlands Giving Guide | 5
Colonial Life Expands Capacity of Midlands Nonprofits For many nonprofits, Midlands Gives goes beyond raising money. It is also an opportunity for them to learn new skills, increase their capacity and expand their communication potential throughout the year. Each nonprofit is encouraged to create a personal Midlands Gives goal. From acquiring new donors, to increasing their presence on social media, to engaging their board or raising money for a particular project, many nonprofits find Midlands Gives increases their impact all year round. But they aren’t alone in the journey to achieving these goals. Thanks to the generosity of Colonial Life, all nonprofits who participate in Midlands Gives receive extensive training from Central Carolina Community Foundation and South Carolina Association for Nonprofit Organizations (SCANPO). The training sessions gives participants the tools and resources necessary to meet their goals and be successful for the giving day and beyond.
Foundation has made all the difference in our ability to plan and promote the event.” This year, SCANPO held a training series led by a national nonprofit communications expert, Kivi Miller. The series included two webinars and an in-person workshop and was required for first time participants. The 400 nonprofit staff members who attended learned how to identify their audience, focus their messages, and create an editorial calendar for their full calendar year. These skills help nonprofits of all sizes be strategic about their communications, which leads to more effective results. For the second year in a row, Colonial Life’s generosity has provided the funding for Midlands Gives trainings. Central Carolina Community Foundation thanks Colonial Life for their support of Midlands Gives and for helping increase the impact of all nonprofits in our community.
“Participating last year helped us raise over $12,000 and gain dozens of new donors. One third of our Midlands Gives donors donated for the first time that day!” commented Adele Little, Director of Healing Species. “All of the resources and training provided by the Community
