Barista Program This one-of-a-kind, three-week program is designed to give you a solid introduction to all things coffee/ barista, including history, lingo, equipment, espresso, milk preparation, palate development, roasting, brewing, cold drink preparation, flavor options, tea, latte art/presentation and smoothies. It will also introduce the students to the business aspects of running and/or working in a coffee shop. This portion covers menu evaluation, merchandising, point-of-sale, loss prevention/theft, government entities, staffing, customer service, coffee bar design and ambiance.

Job Outlook

The coffee industry is the fastest growing market segment of the fast food industry. Qualified persons who are interested in working as a barista should have little trouble finding and maintaining employment in the field. After graduating with a Barista certificate, you will have the skills necessary to gain employment at coffee shops and cafes. Employment of barista professionals is projected to increase by 9 percent between 2008 and 2018.

Program Hours/Length

Certificate: 65 total program hours including a 45 hour internship. Theory to be delivered online for a total of 20 hours.

Entrance Requirements • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

What You Will Learn • • • • • • • • • •

Prepare hand-crafted espresso-based beverages by properly grinding, dosing and tamping ground espresso and pulling the perfect shot and steaming the perfect milk. Prepare frappe blended drinks and smoothies. Grind and brew coffee using a variety of brewing techniques. Be able to discuss and describe coffee by region or blend to a customer to help pair the perfect coffee to customer taste. Maintain and clean coffee shop equipment. Discuss the science behind coffee from crop to cup. Discern coffee jargon. Discuss and describe tea. Provide excellent customer service that will create a loyal and knowledgeable customer Keep the facilities clean and organized.
