Fitness & Health Trainer Fitness and Health Trainers lead, instruct, and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching as well as diet and health planning. You will be able to work in commercial and nonprofit health clubs, country clubs, hospitals, universities, yoga and Pilate’s studios, resorts, or clients’ homes. Increasingly, Fitness and Health Trainers also are found in workplaces, where they organize and direct health and fitness programs for employees of all ages. Fitness and Health Trainers in smaller facilities with few employees may perform a variety of functions in addition to their fitness duties, such as tending the front desk, signing up new members, giving tours of the fitness center, writing newsletter articles, creating posters and flyers, and supervising the weight training and cardiovascular equipment areas. In larger commercial facilities, personal trainers are often required to sell their services to members and to make a specified number of sales. Some Fitness and Health Trainers may combine the duties of group exercise instructors and personal trainers, and in smaller facilities, the fitness director may teach classes and do personal training.

Job Outlook

Degree Program

Employment of Fitness and Health Trainers who are concentrated in the rapidly growing arts, entertainment, and recreation industry is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016. An increasing number of people spend more time and money on fitness and businesses are recognizing the benefits of fitness and health programs and other services such as wellness programs for their employees. As health clubs strive to provide more personalized service to keep their members motivated, they will continue to offer personal training and a wide variety of group exercise classes. Participation in Yoga and Pilates is expected to continue to grow, driven partly by the aging population demanding low-impact forms of exercise and relief from ailments such as arthritis.

Students who wish to further their education beyond the diploma program have the option of attending CCC’s Associates of Occupational Science Degree Program. The degree program is designed to provide a foundation that will enable degree holders to seek and apply for management roles in their specialties.

Working Conditions Fitness and Health Trainers usually work in a clean, well-lit and cool environment, although some spend time outdoors for recreation and sports fitness. They must stand for long periods of time and be physically fit. Depending on whether or not the graduate is self-employed, work schedules vary from a traditional work week to evenings and weekend to full time or part time. Criminal background checks and drug screening is possible.

Physical Requirements Physical requirements can vary from sedentary to heavy activity depending upon whether Fitness and Health Trainers are performing administrative or instructional duties. Hearing If hearing impaired, must possess reasonable alternative communication skills. Speech Must demonstrate ability to functionally express self orally and/or in writing. Vision Must possess normal vision or correctable to within normal ranges.

Mental & Emotional Requirements Because Fitness and Health Trainers work with the public and must promote themselves, they must be neat and wellgroomed, and have a courteous, pleasant manner. Fitness and Health Trainers must be able to communicate well with coworkers and their clients. They must respect the confidential nature of medical and health information.
