Surgical Technology If you work well in a precision team environment, can multi-task, and appreciate the intensity of surgical procedures, the Surgical Technology program offers those opportunities and a rewarding, well-paying career. To prepare as a member of a surgical team delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery, you will learn basic sciences, how to prepare and maintain a sterile environment, care and use of supplies and equipment, patient care, and the ethics of a health professional. Laboratory and clinical experiences complement classroom instruction through hands-on application of theory. You may enter the workforce directly after completing this program or elect to apply credit earned toward your degree.

Job Outlook

Degree Program

Job opportunities are expected to be favorable. Employment of Surgical Technologists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2016 as the volume of surgeries increases. The number of surgical procedures is expected to rise as the population grows and ages. As members of the baby boom generation approach retirement age, the over-50 population, who generally require more surgical procedures, will account for a larger portion of the general population. Technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser technology, will also permit new surgical procedures to be performed.

Students who wish to further their education beyond the diploma program have the option of attending CCC’s Associates of Occupational Science Degree Program. The degree program is designed to provide a foundation that will enable degree holders to seek and apply for management roles in their specialties.

Hospitals will continue to be the primary employer of Surgical Technologists, although much faster employment growth is expected in offices of physicians and in outpatient care centers, including ambulatory surgical centers.

Certification The Surgical Technologist Program is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) ) in which certification (CST) is offered through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Working Conditions Surgical Technologists work in a clean, well-lit and cool environments. They must stand for long periods of time and remain alert during surgical procedures. At times, they may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors and materials. Most Surgical Technologists work a regular 40-hour week, although they may be on call or work nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. Surgical Technologists must be aware that employers often perform pre-employment drug screening and criminal background checks.

Physical Requirements Surgical technologists must: • be able to bend, walk, stand for long period of time, lift, carry, push; handle equipment, supplies or patients exceeding 25 pounds.

• be able to work in environmental temperatures from 60 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range.

• be aware that exposure to latex gloves may cause the development of allergic reactions.

• be aware that their skin should be clear and free of conditions which would impair the integrity of skin.

Hearing Must demonstrate ability to functionally perceive the nature of sounds and the spoken word and may use adaptive techniques or devices.

Speech Must demonstrate ability to functionally express self orally and/ or in writing.

Vision Must be able to demonstrate the functional ability to obtain impressions of shape, size and motion by passing routine vision screening and to distinguish red and green colors. Adaptive devices may be used.

Mental & Emotional Requirements Surgical Technologists must be able to: • manage stress appropriately • make decisions under pressure • manage anger/fear/hostility/violence of others appropriately • work alone or as a team member • positive attitude
