Commonwealth Catholic Charities, we are privileged to witness lives change. For nearly 100 years, Commonwealth Catholic Charities has worked to alleviate human suffering and restore hope, dignity, and opportunity for Virginians. Every day, CCC connects with vulnerable individuals in our communities. We listen, share, counsel, encourage, comfort, and guide struggling parents, lonely adults, scared children, and fragile teens. At CCC, we see and connect with those who often go unseen. This Christmas season, we thank you for your support and invite you to continue helping us make these priceless connections. To learn more about CCC, our mission, and the important connections we make in our communities, visit our website at www.cccofva.org.

A special thank you to the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree for their volunteer efforts on behalf of Holiday Festival of Music. Thank you also to the Holiday Festival of Music Committee: Joseph Boisineau, Dick Dash, Michael Hadank, Louise Hartz, Nikola Lucas, Kathy Mortensen, John Puccinelli, and Dianne Thompson.

Very Rev. Msgr. R. Francis Muench, J.C.L., E.V. Jay Brown, CCC CEO

The use of cameras and/or recording devices in the cathedral is strictly prohibited.

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen God rest you merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay Remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas Day To save us all from Satan’s pow’r when we were gone astray Oh tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy Oh tidings of comfort and joy.

Verse 2 They look-ed up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Silent Night, Holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace.

Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King; Peace on Earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king. Verse 2 Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come Offspring of a virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the God-head see, Hail th’incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King.

Silent Night

O Come, All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him Born the King of Angels: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Verse 2 Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above; "Glory to God, all glory in the highest!" O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

The First Noel The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, In a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel! 7

About the Richmond Symphony The Richmond Symphony is the largest performing arts organization in Central Virginia. The organization includes an orchestra of more than 70 professional musicians, the 150-voice Richmond Symphony Chorus and more than 260 students in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra programs. Each season, more than 200,000 members of the community enjoy live concerts and radio broadcasts. The Symphony also provides educational outreach programs to over 55,000 students and teachers each year. The Symphony was recently named one of 21 American orchestras selected as a leader in orchestra innovation by the League of American Orchestras through its Futures Fund Initiative. The Richmond Symphony is partially funded by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

About the VCU Choral Arts Society Choral Arts Society is a mixed ensemble bringing the joy of singing to the VCU community and beyond. Conducted by Director of Choral Activities, Erin Freeman, the ensemble is open to all students of the University and has performed music from Johannes Brahms to Freddie Mercury.

About the Cathedral Ministry of Music Through the art of music, the Cathedral Ministry of Music seeks to enable each member of the concert audience or worshipping assembly to be drawn into a deeper experience of the presence of God, in the Church's celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and in an extensive concert series. Through music, God continues to reveal God's self. Music touches and moves hearts and souls, individually and communally. In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and encourages the arts and social outreach for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and Greater Richmond area. The Music Ministry and its programs seek to respect the diversity already present in the local community by programming inclusive, eclectic repertoire and by engaging performing artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles. May your spirits be uplifted to God whose gift of music we celebrate!

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

With Our Thanks Commonwealth Catholc Charities is extremely grateful to these parishes in the greater Richmond area for supporting our mission throughout the year. Each parish has opened their hearts and doors to support us through food and financial donations, provided space to host counseling groups, collected school supplies and coats for refugee children, and supplied countless diapers, clothes, and formula for our baby clothes closet.

Snowy Virginia

January 28, 1772 Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson noted in their diaries that three feet of snow fell. The Washington-Jefferson snowstorm is Virginia’s biggest snowfall ever recorded. January 16-18, 1857 The Great Blizzard’s foot of snow and wind wrecked ships at sea and almost buried Norfolk under 20-foot snowdrifts. Virginia’s rivers froze. At the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, one could walk from the lighthouse 100 yards on the frozen Atlantic. February 18-19, 1979 Snow fell two to three inches per hour during this Presidents’ Day Storm. Temperatures plummeted into single digits as farmers, who had come to Washington to protest agricultural pricing, used their tractors to help clear roads and parking lots, and deliver personnel to hospitals. December 18-19, 2009 This 23-inch snowstorm was the largest single December snowfall in the history of the region’s three major airports. It provided a white Christmas.
