Welcome Dear Friends,

The Christmas season is a time of warmth, joy, and special traditions. For twenty-six years, the beauty and majesty of Christmas has been celebrated through the sights and sounds of the Holiday Festival of Music. This lovely tradition marks the beginning of the Christmas season and is an occasion for coming together as a community to remember past traditions and share renewed wonder at the miraculous birth of Christ. Tonight, let the splendor of the Cathedral and the beauty of the music uplift you. May the gift of music that we share tonight be remembered all season long. Be inspired and encouraged this evening and leave with a renewed sense of joy and peace. From each of us at Commonwealth Catholic Charities, we wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with the gift of hope! Sincerely,

Joanne D. Nattrass Executive Director

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Joy to the World

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies; With th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King! Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Refrain Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. Angels We Have Heard on High

The First Noel The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay tending their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Refrain Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. They lookèd up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Refrain

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o'er the plains And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains.

O Come, All Ye Faithful

Refrain Gloria in excelsis Deo. Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Refrain O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Silent Night Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above: "Glory to God, all glory in the highest!" Refrain

Acclaimed by Richmond Times Dispatch’s Tony Farrell “… especially baritone Chase Peak …who delivers every line with magnificent dynamics and indulges in terrific, expressive bits of acting business whenever he is onstage” for his role as Kapitan Tiago in COR’s production of Noli Me Tangere in 2016. He was also heralded by M. D. Ridge of WHRO Norfolk as “..robustly extroverted with a big, exuberant voice and confident manner” in the 2014 production of La Bohème, where he was featured in the role of Schaunard with Lyric Opera of Virginia. Peak is in high demand for church and cathedral performances and has most notably performed the solos for Fantasia on Christmas Carols (Vaughan Williams’), Stabat Mater (Dvořák), Carmina Burana (Orff), Messa di Gloria (Puccini), Faure’s Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah. Peak is the Bass soloist and section leader with Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Richmond. her favorites being Musetta in La Boheme, Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Josephine in HMS Pinafore, Elsie Maynard in The Yeoman of the Guard, Casilda in The Gondoliers, Cupid in Orpheus in the Underworld, Papagena in The Magic Flute, Suor Genoveffa in Suor Angelica, Isabel in El Capitan, Lucia in The Rape of Lucretia and Phyllis in Iolanthe where the Baltimore Sun said “The sweet, nimble singing and deft acting of Sarah Kate Walston, as Phyllis, was a major plus throughout the performance.” Walston also enjoys performing in recitals and concerts and has performed in Germany and throughout the United States. She has performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra. Cat hedral Music Minist ry

W

elcome to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Through the art of music, the Ministry of Music seeks to enable each member of the concert audience or worshipping assembly to be drawn into a deeper experience of the presence of God, in the Church's celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and in an extensive concert series. Through music, God continues to reveal God's self. Music touches and moves hearts and souls, individually and communally. In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and encourages the arts and social outreach for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and Greater Richmond area. The Music Ministry and its programs seek to respect the diversity already present in the local community by programming inclusive, eclectic repertoire and by engaging performing artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles. May your spirits be uplifted to God whose gift of music we celebrate!
