W

elcome Dear Friends, We are so pleased that you have joined Commonwealth Catholic Charities tonight for our 27th annual Holiday Festival of Music.

Amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it is a joy to gather with friends, family, and neighbors to celebrate this special season of warmth and joy. The Christmas season is a time for remembrance and reflection. A time to observe long-held traditions, to remember those who came before us, to prepare for the birth of Jesus, and to step outside of ourselves and help those in need.

"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year." - Charles Dickens

At CCC, we strive to keep this spirit of Christmas with us every day as we minister to vulnerable individuals and families in our communities. We are so thankful for each of you here tonight whose support makes our work possible. From each of us at Commonwealth Catholic Charities, we wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and a New Year filled with promise! Sincerely,

Joanne D. Nattrass Executive Director

The Victorian Christmas

W

hen Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837, very few British celebrated Christmas. This soon changed with the trend-setting royal family. German-born Prince Albert introduced the British to many of his country's Christmas traditions, including the tabletop Christmas tree, which was enthusiastically embraced. The trees were decorated with candles, fancy paper, ribbon, fruit and other edible treats, toys, and cones filled with sweets. During Victoria's reign, the Industrial Revolution brought new technologies and a new middle class who could afford to take time off to celebrate Christmas. A Victorian Christmas often began with a morning mass and included carolling, exchanging gifts and cards, feasting, care for the less fortunate, and gathering together with friends and family. Many of the Christmas traditions and customs that we celebrate in America today are directly related to the Christmases celebrated by the Victorians. As you read through the program tonight, be sure to look for more Victorian Christmas customs and tidbits!

Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born king. Verse 2 Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come Offspring of a virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the God-head see, Hail th’incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the new-born King. The First Nowell Verse 1 The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, In a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel!

Verse 2 They look-ed up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. Silent Night Silent Night, Holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace. Sleep in heavenly peace. O Come, All Ye Faithful Verse 1 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him Born the King of Angels: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Cathedral Music Ministry hrough the art of music, the Cathedral Ministry of Music seeks to enable each member of the concert audience or worshipping assembly to be drawn into a deeper experience of the presence of God, in the Church's celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and in an extensive concert series. Through music, God continues to reveal God's self. Music touches and moves hearts and souls, individually and communally.

T

In keeping with the tradition of cathedrals throughout the ages, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart actively promotes and encourages the arts and social outreach for the Catholic Diocese of Richmond and Greater Richmond area. The Music Ministry and its programs seek to respect the diversity already present in the local community by programming inclusive, eclectic repertoire and by engaging performing artists from a wide spectrum of musical styles. May your spirits be uplifted to God whose gift of music we celebrate!

Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories hile today we do not often think of ghost stories as part of a traditional Christmas celebration, to the Victorians, they were a common and expected part of any Christmas gathering. As British author Jerome K. Jerome wrote in 1891, “Whenever five or six English-speaking people meet round a fire on Christmas Eve, they start telling each other ghost stories.

W

So it should be no surprise that Charles Dickens' tale of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his ghostly Christmastime visitors was an instant hit. In fact, the story was first published on December 19, 1843 and in less than one week, by Christmas Eve, the first edition had already sold out. The story's popularity is often credited with helping to revive the Victorian's interest in Christmas celebrations.

A Fond Farewell Joanne Nattrass Retires

A

fter 12 years as the executive director of CCC, Joanne Nattrass has announced plans to retire at the end of the year. Her leadership and vision have guided the agency and resulted in innumerable successes and accomplishments in the service to others over the years.

“Joanne has guided CCC into a future that continues to address the needs of the community's most vulnerable with greater capabilities," said Cliona Mary Robb, CCC Board of Directors Chair. “She has handled the expected and the unexpected events of the last 12 years with visionary and compassionate leadership." In her time at the helm, the agency has made tremendous strides in expanding its services and footprint throughout the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, in greater financial stability, in purchasing office space in downtown Richmond and re-locating the main Richmond office to a building better able to serve clients and staff, and the completion of the building's new chapel. “My goal has always been to support staff in carrying out our mission of helping those in need, ensuring staff feel respected, heard and valued," said Nattrass. Of her many accomplishments through the years, Nattrass has been most proud of the agency's continued mission to carry out the Gospel of service to others, of securing financial resources to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, of ensuring that CCC's office spaces are professional, safe, and accessible, and, most recently, in establishing a housing corporation to expand affordable housing options for CCC clients and community residents. The staff of CCC are grateful for Joanne's leadership, vision, and compassion over the last 12 years. We wish her all the best in her retirement. 16

Victorian Christmas Games Don't Try This at Home!

P

arlor games were extremely popular with Victorians. A popular Christmastime parlor game, dating back to the 16th century was called Snapdragon. Snapdragon was played during the winter months and in particular on Christmas Eve. With the lights dimmed, giving faces an eerie glow, raisins were placed into a bowl, drenched in rum, and set on fire. The object of the game was to get the raisins out of the bowl and eat them while they were still on fire. According to Robert Chambers' Book of Days (1879), the game could also be accompanied with a poem: “Here he comes with flaming bowl, Don't he mean to take his toll, Snip! Snap! Dragon! Take care you don't take too much, Be not greedy in your clutch, Snip! Snap! Dragon! With his blue and lapping tongue Many of you will be stung, Snip! Snap! Dragon! For he snaps at all that comes Snatching at his feast of plums, Snip! Snap! Dragon! But Old Christmas makes him come, Though he looks so fee! fa! fum! Snip! Snap! Dragon! Don't 'ee fear him but be bold — Out he goes his flames are cold, Snip! Snap! Dragon!" 36

The Victorian Christmas Meal hile the Christmas feast pre-dates the Middle Ages, the Victorians undoubtedly perfected it. Many of our traditional Christmas foods trace their origin to the 19th century. The roast turkey first made its appearance as a favorite Christmas centerpiece during this time and was accompanied by many familiar dishes like cranberries, potatoes, and pies.

W

For wealthy Victorians, the Christmas meal included multiple courses with dishes like turtle soup, fish, roasted meats, oysters, puddings, punch, and fancy cakes. The plum pudding was a favorite Christmas tradition.

Plum Pudding Try Your Hand at This Authentic Victorian Plum Pudding Recipe

"Take the foot of a kine And chop very fine And when ‘tis well ground Add of currants a pound; Eight ounces of bread Through a cullinder shred, Six ounces of suetA nutmeg add to it; Eight eggs beaten thin I’d have you put in To this add some salt ‘Twill be without fault;

With sugar one handfull ‘Twill all make a panfull Three hours you must boil it One more wouldn’t spoil it When dished on the table You may add if you’re able Some butter and wine And you’ll say ‘twill outshine All the puddings in England Whenever you dine. Xtmas 1847"
