M O T H E R ’ S D AY | S U N D AY, M AY 1 0 , 2 0 2 0 BIG PICTURE: A Time to Honor Mom—Mother’s Day BIG POINT: Parents aren’t always perfect, but God wants us to honor them. BIG STORY: Read Luke 2:41–52 BIG WORD: “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you...” Isaiah 66:13a (NIV) LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the conclusion of this lesson, children will: • Take time to honor their mother or a woman in their life. • Understand that parents aren’t perfect, but God wants us to honor them. • Discover some great mothers in the Bible.
THE BIG QUESTIONS (to discuss with your kids)
1. What does honor mean? Honor means to have high respect and great esteem. Honor means we give that person an important place in our life. 2. In today’s Bible story, how did Jesus honor his mother? He obeyed her by leaving the temple with her. 3. How can we honor our moms? Ephesians 6:1–2a (NLT) says, “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. Honor your father and mother.” We honor our moms by obeying them, respecting them, helping them, praying for them, doing kind things, and telling them how much we love them. 4. Put it into practice! Kids, go right now and tell your mom three things that you really appreciate about her.

AT-HOME ACTIVITIES: ALL AGES
Thank-You Flowers for Mom
Supplies needed: Construction paper, scissors, markers or pens, glue, and vase or napkin Directions: Make a flower expressing the different ways you appreciate your mom. Draw pictures or write what you love about her on each petal (see examples). Put the flower on the napkin, or glue the flower to a pipe cleaner, straw, or craft stick for a stem and place in a vase. Dads, this works well if you have multiple kids to make a bouquet, but a single flower in the vase works too! Celebrate your mom with a special meal or dessert. Put your thank-you flowers on the table. Explanation: We love our moms—they are awesome! Proverbs 31:28 (NIRV) says, “Her children stand up and call her blessed. Her husband also rises up, and he praises her.” Today we take time to honor our moms and other amazing women in our lives.

PRAYER Dear God, thank you for our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and friends. Thank you that you give us special people in our lives to love us and take care of us. We pray that every mother is valued, honored, and cherished today and every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
