BIG PICTURE: Jesus gives us joy!

BIG POINT: When we have the joy of Christ in us, we can live like Jesus.

BIG STORY: Paul and Silas in prison—read Acts 16:16–34. BIG WORD: “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10c (NIV) LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the conclusion of this lesson, children will: • Know that the message of the gospel brings us joy, no matter our circumstances. • Understand that we are more like Jesus when we choose joy. • Learn ways to share our joy in Jesus.

THE BIG QUESTIONS (to discuss with your kids)

1. How could Paul and Silas pray and sing songs to God after they were beaten and put in prison? They had the joy of the Lord and knew God was with them, no matter what happened. 2. God had already set Paul and Silas free from sin, but what did God miraculously free them from in this story? Prison. 3. Who else was freed with them? All the others in the prison who had been listening to them. 4. How did God use their joy in him to free the jailer? The jailer wanted the joy that Paul and Silas had and asked, “What must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas told him about Jesus. He believed, was baptized, and filled with joy! 5. What things in your life keep you from joy? 6. How can we show the joy of the Lord to others? Share the Good News, openly praise God, encourage others with kind words, etc.
