ELEMENTARY KIDS & FAMILIES date:

This resource is designed to allow your family to have time in God’s Word BEFORE your children attend church. Because God’s plan is for parents to be the primary spiritual nurturers of their children’s faith, we want YOU to be the one to introduce this part of The Big God Story to them. For additional support in spiritual parenting and to learn more about creating transforming environments in your home, be sure to pick up HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource from your church, or download it at HomeFrontMag.com. You can also access the HomeFront app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

1.3 God Is the Lord, Part I Part of The Big God Story Exodus 2—4

Moses on Holy Ground

Younger Kids

Did You Know? • When God revealed His name to Moses in Exodus 3:14, He said, “‘I AM WHO I AM [Ehyeh-Asherr-Ehyeh].” • By making Himself known through the name Ehyeh-Asherr-Ehyeh, God revealed that He exists, has always existed, and will always exist (in contrast to the Egyptian gods who did not exist). • The name Jesus (Yeshua) means “YHWH is salvation.” In Jesus, EhyehAsherr-Ehyeh became a man in order to fulfill His covenant promise. • In the New Testament, Jesus indicated that He was YHWH by calling Himself “I am”—for example, in John 8:58, “Before Abraham was born, I am!” Through this and other confessions, Jesus revealed Himself as the everlasting Ehyeh-Asherr-Ehyeh— the Lord of all.

Your younger child is beginning to view the world in more complex ways. He may begin to be more reflective and ask challenging questions, even about Bible stories he’s heard before and accepted without question.

Older Kids Your older child will begin to tailor her communication style to her surroundings. It’s important to spend time in discussion and to express your own thoughts and feelings, as this will encourage her to communicate with you and express her emotions around you.

Teachable Moments

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28

After reading Exodus 3:1—4:17, discuss the following together: • Why did God tell Moses to take off his sandals? • What did God want Moses to do? • Why did God want to free His people from the Egyptians?
