This resource is designed to allow your family to have time in God’s Word BEFORE your children attend church. Because God’s plan is for parents to be the primary spiritual nurturers of their children’s faith, we want YOU to be the one to introduce this part of The Big God Story to them. For additional support in spiritual parenting and to learn more about creating transforming environments in your home, be sure to pick up HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource from your church or download at HomeFrontMag.com. You can also access the HomeFront app for your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

• While hiding the in caves at En Gedi, David had an opportunity to kill Saul, but he chose to let him live.

Your child’s circle of influence is constantly expanding. Be sure to encourage positive friendships and speak to him often about being a positive influence in the lives of those around him.

• David returned to work as a shepherd and took care of Nabal’s flock.

Older Kids

• David got so angry with Nabal that he wanted to kill Nabal.

Your child may increasingly look to outside influences to help direct her choices. Remind her that God has given us the Bible and the Holy Spirit to help us make right choices.

• God used Abigail, Nabal’s wife, to change David’s heart and prevent him from sinning.

God Changes Hearts Part of The Big God Story 1 Samuel 24—25

While David waits to become king, he faces many challenges. And though he faces some of those challenges confidently, he also encounters some difficult times. So God puts people like Abigail in David’s life to help change his heart before he can make a bad choice. God uses Abigail to change David’s heart so he doesn’t sin. God still changes hearts today!

Teachable Moments

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. (Psalm 46:10)

After reading Scripture, discuss the following together: • Why didn’t David hurt Saul in the cave? • How did God use Abigail in David’s life? • What areas of your life might God want to change? Remind your children that when we enter into a relationship with God, we receive the Holy Spirit, who has the power to change our hearts.
