ELEMENTARY KIDS & FAMILIES date:

This resource is designed to allow your family to have time in God’s Word BEFORE your children attend church. Because God’s plan is for parents to be the primary spiritual nurturers of their children’s faith, we want YOU to be the one to introduce this part of The Big God Story to them. For additional support in spiritual parenting and to learn more about creating transforming environments in your home, be sure to pick up HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource from your church, or download it at HomeFrontMag.com. You can also access the HomeFront app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

3.5 Jesus Is King Part of The Big God Story Matthew 21:1–11; John 12:12–19 Triumphal Entry

Younger Kids

Did You Know? • As Jesus approached Jerusalem, crowds scurried to cut palm branches and wave them over Him as He entered the city. Palm branches were used to symbolize Jewish pride, and Israelites would only cover the ground with them for honorable and worthy individuals. • Laying the palm branches for Jesus implied that the Israelites perceived Jesus to be a king coming to rescue them. • The people cried out, “Hosanna,” which means, “Save us” or “Rescue us.” The people shouted it in celebration, as if to say, “Hooray—He is here to save us!” • Jesus came to restore a broken relationship between mankind and God. Instead of bringing a sword as a warrior king, Jesus brought a message of peace and humility for true salvation.

This is a great age to start helping children to tackle new challenges. Encourage your child to solve problems on his own without your intervention, perhaps in a disagreement with a friend or figuring out how something works. Frustration may come easily, but refrain from stepping in right away; instead, encourage your child to patiently work through the issue.

Older Kids Connecting with a peer group and fitting in is very important to children this age. The peer group your child chooses to be a part of will greatly impact her life. You can help your child make wise relationship choices by making it a point to know your child’s friends.

Teachable Moments After reading Matthew 21:1–11 and John 12:12–19, discuss the following together: • What surprised people about Jesus? • What would you have done if you had been there that day? • How does knowing that Jesus is King change how you view situations in life?

For more information about blessing your child see the Blessing section in HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource. A blessing to pray over your child:

(Child’s name), may you trust Jesus to be King in your life. May you know that you can call out to Him and He will save you. May you know that the King of heaven and earth loves you and cares for you.
