Overview The Uganda Studies Program (USP) is excited to offer a social work practicum. The USP is a program based on understanding, learning and growth within a different culture. The social work practicum is an extension of this process, offering the opportunity for part of this learning to take place during an internship in the community. The social work practicum offers social work majors from CCCU schools the opportunity to do their junior (150 hours) or senior (400 hours) level practicum in an overseas setting. Working in this unique environment will create experiences that promote growth, along with an appreciation for diversity and different cultures. Students will gain valuable insight into the growing field of international social work by working with both an on-site Ugandan supervisor and an American placement supervisor. This is a chance to have new relationships and experiences that will grow a student’s understanding of social work and their vocation. Gwyneth Jones, MSW, one of our Program Coordinators will coordinate the social work internships. For more information contact her at uspsocialwork@gmail.com. Experiences >>

experiences “The USP Social Work Program was a beautiful opportunity for me to experience international social work in its flexibility, holistic service, and intercultural teamwork with invested supervisors and loving coworkers. We also were able to process the exciting and challenging experiences from a Christian perspective with other USP Social Work students, UCU Ugandans, and USP leaders. You will gain so much from this program!”

experiences “Off Tu mission is a place of love and community. I was able to develop friendships with the staff who have big dreams for the future of Uganda’s street children, and love on the children that live at Off Tu and those that are still living on the streets. I think that the social work practicum complimented the information we were learning in Faith and Action and other classes at UCU, as it brought a relational aspect to the cultural understanding that we were learning. This practicum pushed me out of my comfort zone, furthered my understanding of the needs in Uganda, and set my heart to love those in need.”

experiences The social work program and practicum opportunity has definitely been the most influential experience I have had during my semester abroad in Uganda. Working for Off-Tu Missions and coming along side Ugandan children, teachers, staff, and the culture has given me the chance to truly experience living in Uganda in a unique and very relational way. Not only do I a get the chance to study classes at Uganda Christian University, but also I am able to truly engage and immerse with the culture and real faces of Uganda.

site descriptions Social work practicum students have the opportunity to work at various sites in the community. Populations that students could work with include street children, orphans, adults in vocational schools, people who are blind, people with disabilities, as well as people needing services at health clinics. Sites are located within Mukono or Kampala, in both rural and urban settings Students will work with on-site Ugandan supervisors who have experience in their setting and organization. Interactions with clients will take place in schools, homes and the community. Students will be exposed to issues confronting Ugandan society including education, poverty, healthcare, HIV/AIDS, and issues affecting women. There will be the opportunity to engage with supervisors and other students on these topics and learn from Ugandans about their country and what social work looks like in the African context.

Social Work Emphasis (SWE) The Social Work Emphasis (SWE) with junior or seniorlevel field placements attracts social work majors who want their primary cross-cultural relationships to develop through their social work internship in addition to their involvement in campus life at Uganda Christian University. All SWE students take Faith & Action in the Ugandan Context in addition to their practicum. Junior-level practicum students also enroll in at least one African Context Course and, if desired, complete 16 credits with an additional Elective Course or African Context Course.
