am convinced that digital transformation has great potential to bring France and Britain closer together. So I am particularly pleased that the French Chamber of

Great Britain is organising this first major conference on the topic in London. It could not come at a better time. After several years of robust growth in London thanks to its vibrant heart, Tech City, tech entrepreneurs are now challenging traditional business. Sectors such as healthcare, transport, energy and indeed every kind of business are facing unexpected and innovative challengers. But this trend also presents new opportunities for our common economic development. France, for its part, has reinvented itself as a nation of creativeness, innovation and boldness thanks to the impressive network of French Tech ecosystems. Today, we are proud of the international successes of French start-ups such as Criteo and BlaBlaCar. Our entrepreneurs and SMEs are cooperating with large companies such as Orange, Atos and Société Générale as well as attracting American, Asian and British investment. Our recent economic reforms have unlocked new business opportunities for foreign companies such as The Train Line to invest in France. All this contributes to growth and employment not only in France but also in the UK. Today, digital and entrepreneurial relationships between the UK and France are set to grow even stronger. New partnerships will allow French companies to enjoy the full potential of the British market in cyber security, cloud computing and crowdfunding. I have observed while visiting different parts of the country, notably Belfast and Manchester, that French technology is blossoming in the UK and has a relevant place as a reliable partner. In the constant connection of small and big, I have seen our networks of entrepreneurs and companies grow in Shoreditch and Croydon, strengthening bonds unimaginable 10 years ago. Finally, at the European level, our two countries are joining forces to support a single market for the digital economy. Our governments believe that there is an opportunity for Europe to build the framework that we need to compete with the United States and Asia, which are already ahead in the global digital race. This will create access to a market of more than 500 million customers for French and British SMEs, which had not dared to trade overseas before, promote harmonisation and lower costs. Small meets big represents a new vision for a more collaborative and inclusive economy. Such innovative business cooperation redefines manufacturing, creates reshoring opportunities and boosts our start-ups to become the seeds of our future prosperity.

elcome to the Franco-British Digital Conference, organised by the French Chamber of Great Britain in partnership with the French Embassy in the UK,

the Franco-British Council and FrenchConnect London. This is the third in a series of conferences that the French Chamber organises annually to provide a platform of high-level engagement between businesses, academics, institutions and government on topical issues and prominent sectors. Previous conferences were themed on Energy in 2013 and Transport in 2014. It was Axelle Lemaire, French Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, who first suggested that we hold a Franco-British conference on Digital. Indeed, as digital pervades almost every aspect of business, it is an opportune moment to take stock of what is happening, not only in the political realms of policy, funding and facilitation, but also within the ‘ecosystems’ that have evolved in both France and the UK, and the way digital transformation is taking place in corporations, their value chains, supply chains and customer relations. As the French Chamber is representative of businesses across the whole spectrum, from start-ups to blue chip companies, we decided to focus on the interface between big and small companies. Start-ups may have been responsible for the disruption to business as we knew it, but they are also now working with big corporations to help and enhance their digital transformation in ways that will develop the growth and competitiveness of both. And big companies are helping start-ups scale up into the companies of tomorrow with funding and mentorship. This conference, through panel debates and case study presentations will provide a platform for discussion about how that is happening and an insight into where future opportunities for all types of businesses may lie. The French Chamber of Great Britain Established in 1883, the French Chamber of Great Britain is the largest Foreign Chamber in the UK in terms of both turnover and range of services offered. The Franco-British Council The Franco-British Council was created on the joint initiative of Président Georges Pompidou and Prime Minister Edward Heath, when Britain joined the European Community. Conference moderators Alan Rutter Co-founder, Clever Boxer Alan Rutter is the co-founder of consultancy Clever Boxer, and has worked as a journalist, digital consultant, product owner and trainer. He oversaw the iPad edition launches of Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue in the UK, and has been working with Condé Nast International as product owner on a bespoke digital asset management system for their 11 global markets. He teaches for General Assembly and runs inhouse training for public sector clients with ModernGov. He previously worked with Guardian Masterclasses on curating and delivering new course strands, including the start-ups and business courses, and teaching their B2B data visualisation courses. Previously he was Online Editor at Time Out, having also worked as Acting Deputy Editor and Features Editor on the magazine. He has over 10 years’ previous experience of working for magazines, both online and in print.

Alexandre Sagakian Co-founder & President, FrenchConnect London Alexandre is a tech entrepreneur, angel investor and one of the 3 co-founders of FrenchConnect London, a private Club for French Digital Leaders based in London. Currently VP Data and Research in a VC-backed start-up, Alexandre was previously Director of the 1st Techstars accelerator programme in London (2013). Before moving to the UK in 2012, Alexandre had co-founded DirectPanel, an online market research start-up and successfully sold it to the Bolloré Group in France. Alexandre holds an MBA from Essec Business School.

Conference speakers HE Ms Sylvie Bermann French Ambassador to the UK A graduate of the Paris Institute of Political Studies, the French Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations (Chinese) and the Beijing Language Institute, Ms Sylvie Bermann embarked on her diplomatic career in 1979. She was appointed French Ambassador to the United Kingdom in July 2014. Vice-Consul at the French Consulate in Hong Kong from 1979 to 1980, she became Second Secretary at the French Embassy in China between 1980 and 1982. She was subsequently responsible for policy relating to China at the Quai d’Orsay’s Asia and Oceania Directorate until 1986, when she became Second Counsellor at the French Embassy in Moscow. In 1989, Sylvie Bermann returned to Paris to take up the post of Head of the Southeast Asia Department. In 1992 she was appointed Second Counsellor at the French Permanent Mission to the United Nations. In 1996, she became Head of the Common Foreign and Security Policy Department at the French Foreign Ministry, before becoming Ambassador to the Western European Union and to the European Union’s Political and Security Committee in Brussels in 2002. She headed the French Foreign Ministry’s directorate for the UN and international organisations, human rights and Francophony, from 2005 to 2011. She was appointed Ambassador to China on 23 February 2011, becoming the first woman to hold the post of French Ambassador in a country which is a permanent member of the Security Council.

Axelle Lemaire French Secretary of State for Digital Affairs Axelle Lemaire (@axellelemaire) has been the French Ministry of State for Digital Affairs since April 2014. She calls her now position the “portfolio for imagination”. Born in Canada in 1974, she studied political science at Sciences Po in Paris and law at the Sorbonne and King’s College London. She worked as a researcher and international lawyer before entering politics as a parliamentary assistant in the House of Commons. In 2012, Axelle was elected in the French National Assembly to represent the French diaspora living in Northern Europe. As the Secretary of the Law Committee and a member of the European Affairs Committee, her main areas of interest were the digital society and digital economy, the protection of human rights and gender equality, and European politics.

Ed Vaizey British Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy Ed Vaizey MP was appointed Minister of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, with responsibility for digital industries on 15 July 2014. Ed was first elected as the MP for Wantage in 2005. He was re-elected in 2010, and May 7 2015. He was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries in May 2010. He was Shadow Minister for the Arts from 2006 to 2010. In 2004 he became a political speech writer. Ed was educated at Merton College, Oxford. After university he worked as a political researcher, before training and practising as a barrister. From 1996 to 2004 he was director of a public relations company.

Since 2015 he is also responsible for the customer experience development. He began his career at Eurostar in 2004 as Online Marketing Manager.

Karine Bidart Deputy Managing Director, Paris&Co After obtaining a master’s degree in International Business at Lomonossov University in Moscow and graduating from Normandy Business School, Karine Bidart started her career in the food industry at PepsiCo, and specialised in negociation with the purchasing groups of the retail industry in Northern France. She joined in 1998 the Finnish group M-real, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, and extended her international experience in Finland at Simpele production site, and in Durban, South-Africa. She took the group responsibility of the international key accounts in the cosmetics sector. In 2009, she joined Paris DÊveloppement, Paris economic development agency, as a global sales director, and launched the prospection activities in Asia, Latin-America and the Middle East. In 2011, she was appointed managing director of the agency. Further to the merger of the 2 agencies, Karine took over the International Investment direction as Deputy Managing Director of Paris&Co, the economic development and innovation agency of Paris.

Co-Founder and COO, BlaBlaCar Nicolas is co-founder & COO of BlaBlaCar. He leads the company’s international growth and operations. Naturally pragmatic, he uses fast iteration to uncover high-growth opportunities. Nicolas is a strong advocate of local teams and acqui-hire, a strategy he implemented to expand BlaBlaCar’s footprint to a global scale. He also successfully led BlaBlaCar’s various rounds of fundraising. He started his career working for start-ups in Silicon Valley during the 2000 boom, moved on to executive and investor roles, and finally worked as a Venture Capitalist in London, before leading BlaBlaCar’s global expansion. Nicolas holds an MBA from INSEAD, an MSc in Optics from the Ecole Superieure d’Optique and an MSc in Applied Physics from Paris XI University. He’s a regular speaker on the theme of transport industry disruption and scaling innovative businesses.

Founder and CEO, Ekimetrics Jean-Baptiste graduated from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole des Mines de Paris, with a specialisation in applied mathematics and micro-economics. Jean-Baptiste founded Ekimetrics in 2006 after having started his career at DDB, where he was in charge of developing modeling methodologies. Ekimetrics was created with the purpose of unlocking value for strategy thanks to innovative statistical methodologies. Ekimetrics has quickly become a European leader in the market and now leads projects in more than 40 countries with 4 offices in Paris, London, New York and Hong Kong. The 100 Ekimetrics consultants are delivering custom-fit approaches to answer key business questions in various sectors. Jean-Baptiste pilots worldwide projects in Automotive, Luxury goods and Insurance and develops innovative approaches for CRM and digital. He is deeply passionate by innovation in the way of delivering simple insights from complex methods for a better decision-making, with a specific interest in the value of data visualisation and tools. Pascal Cagni Founder - CEO, C4 Ventures Apple Europe GP, VP (2000 -2012) Pascal Cagni is the founder and partner of C4 Ventures (c4v.com), a firm that invests in start-ups and contributes to product development and international market strategy. Pascal holds non-executive directorships at Vivendi SA (VIV.PA) and Kingfisher Plc (KGF.L). Along with Vogue editor Anna Wintour, he was recently appointed to the board of directors of the Condé Nastowned e-commerce website Style.com. In 2014, he conducted a strategic review of Net-A-Porter for owner CF Richemont, advising on business re-engineering for the company before the merger with Yoox. Hired by Steve Jobs, Pascal joined Apple in 2000 as General Manager and Vice President of Apple Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA). Under his leadership, Apple EMEIA grew from $1bn to nearly $40bn while rolling out groundbreaking products and services including the iPod, iTunes Store, iPhone, App Store and iPad. Pascal has an MA in Political Sciences from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris (Sciences Po), an MA in Business Law from the Robert Schumann University in Strasbourg and an MBA from HEC Paris. He graduated from the Executive Program (EPGC) at Stanford University, CA, USA. He joined the 63rd promotion of IHEDN (Institute for Higher National Defence Studies). More recently, he was appointed Chairman of the Hardware Club, a highly selective platform for hardware start-ups. Pascal is member of the French Foreign Trade Advisors (CCEF) in London.

Julien Callede Co-Founder and COO, made.com A few years in the sourcing business were enough for Julien Callede, 30, to understand the huge opportunities for innovative new business leaders in the design furniture industry. With a solid background in new business models development and the fast growing companies environment in Paris, Julien co-founded MADE.com together with his business partners Chloé Macintosh and school friend Ning Li. Based in London since the creation of the company in 2010, Julien is originally from Nantes and holds a Master degree from Ecole HEC PARIS, one of the most prestigious business schools in France. Julien has been overseeing all operational aspects at MADE.com since its launch, and is now leading expansion in new territoires as well as new project development.

Pierre Chappaz Founder and Executive Chairman, Teads Pierre Chappaz is a leading European entrepreneur and founder of Kelkoo, Wikio, Ebuzzing, and Teads. Pierre is one of the Europe’s leading entrepreneurs having spoken at many of the top marketing and tech conferences such as Le Web and DMEXCO. Pierre held various Marketing and Communications positions at Toshiba, Computer Associates and IBM before founding the price comparison site Kelkoo in 1999, which he sold to Yahoo in 2004 for €475 million. Briefly president of Yahoo Europe, Pierre Chappaz created Wikio in 2005, a recommendation based search engine and participated in the launch of Netvibes. Wikio merged with Ebuzzing in 2009, a social media and video platform created by Bertrand Quesada in 2007 with the help of Pierre Chappaz. In 2014 Ebuzzing merged with Teads and rebranded under that name, to become a global leader in online video advertising and inventors of outstream video advertising. Pierre, as executive chairman and co-founder, has driven Teads’ success on a global scale making an estimated $98 million in revenue last year.

Group Head of Innovation, HSBC Christophe Chazot is Group Head of Innovation for HSBC, leading teams responsible for Strategic Innovation Investment, investing in disruptive companies, the Innovation Strategy team that identifies and analyses themes that are key to HSBC’s future, and the Innovation Centre that organises the internal initiatives including incubation. Christophe has over 20 years experience across all the major asset classes in Capital Markets. He joined HSBC in 2005 as Global Head of Equity Derivatives. He was promoted to Co-Head of Global Equities in 2008 and was made a member of the Global Markets Executive Committee in the same year. In 2012, he became Head of Strategy and Planning for Global Banking and Markets. Prior to joining HSBC, he worked at Dresdner Kleinwort as the Global Head of Equity Derivatives; at Bankers Trust as the Global Head of Foreign Exchange Options; and at Barclays de Zoete Wedd as an interest rates swaps trader. Christophe’s interest in FinTech dates back to 1987, when he founded Softinvest, a technology company specialising in financial services which developed the Topval Option pricing and visualization software which was sold to the French Stock Exchange. Greg Marsh Co-Founder and CEO, onefinestay Greg has led the onefinestay team since founding the company in 2009, prior to which he spent 3 years on the IT investment team at Index Ventures. Previously he worked at logistics marketplace start-up GF-X, latterly as the firm’s Product Manager. He has an MA from Christ’s College, Cambridge, and an MBA with high distinction from Harvard Business School where he was a Fulbright Scholar and graduated top of his class.
