President’s Message

A record-breaking year

I am pleased to present the report of our annual activity for 2017 – another successful year of operation for the French Chamber of Great Britain. Over the past year we have welcomed 114 new companies to our dynamic membership, further underpinning the crucial role the Chamber plays in the success and development of French companies in the UK. The whole team at the Chamber has worked hard to create and maintain an environment that fosters growth, networking and insight sharing among the membership. As President I had the pleasure to meet many of our members at events and meetings throughout the year. It is clear that our members are consistently impressed with the quality and range of our services – including business services, events and publications – as well as in the dedication and excellence of our team. As the Chamber looks to the future, our services and outreach to our members will continue to grow to meet the changing business environment. We strive to provide the most up-to-date portfolio of services, events and publications which reflects the needs and wishes of our members.

Throughout the year we saw the continued negotiations for Britain to leave the EU, with growing uncertainty in areas of the business environment. While we take an apolitical stance, we redoubled our efforts to help our members understand and plan for the eventual outcomes, with a stellar line up of high-profile speakers at our Brexit forum, a second iteration of our successful Brexit Survey, and increased Brexit news and analysis in the pages of INFO magazine. Despite this uncertainty, the Chamber recorded another successful year, with an increased turnover of £2.3m and pre-tax profits of £139K. I am happy to report that, for another year running, we are in good financial health with sufficient reserves to guarantee our future as the premier Franco-British business platform in the UK.

Deputy President’s Message

As the Chamber goes from strength to strength, we continue to evolve the fundamental principle of our organisation: to serve our members. In this respect, I would like to extend a thank you to all of our members for their superb efforts and contribution in helping make the Chamber what it is today– one of the largest, most successful and dynamic chambers of commerce in the country, if not the world! Our diverse membership of more than 560 companies encompasses organisations of all sizes and from across all sectors in business and industry. We all benefit greatly from this diversity, both in terms of small companies who bring their entrepreneurial spirit and uniqueness to the Chamber, to the large corporates who use our platform to promote their activities and interests, and who are also integral to helping the next generations of French businesses thrive in the UK. With unparalleled access to stakeholders across the British and French business communities, the Chamber gives voice to all its members – through our events, publications and communications, and helps them grow and thrive - through our implantation, business consultancy and recruitment services. We are also at the forefront of insight sharing through a range of our activities, including regular sectoral meetings and seminars. Indeed, the figures in this report help tell the story of this success. Last year, our implantation division provided 465 services, and increased turnover by 4 percent as compared to the previous year. Our business consultancy,

working with 34 clients achieved an impressive satisfaction rate of 96 percent. While our recruitment service placed 41 candidates, including 15 senior level jobs. We hosted a record 52 events, including the launch of the inaugural London Luxury Think Tank, as well as 42 sessions of our Forums & Clubs with more than 70 highprofile guest speakers. INFO magazine published 6 high-quality, themed issues and we achieved record sales of our HR and Cross Cultural guides. In parallel, our social media footprint expanded across the Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram platforms and which have been extremely well appreciated.

Our Partners and Networks

French Embassy The French Embassy is a strong supporter of the Chamber – we work closely with all of the Embassy’s departments and services as well as the Institut Français. We were honoured that the French Ambassador to the UK, HE Sylvie Bermann, spoke at many of our events in 2017. Business France (BF) In early 2016, we signed a cooperation agreement with BF which defines the complementary roles that BF and the French Chamber will play in supporting French SMEs, making it easier for them to know who to turn to, depending on their requirements and stage of development. CCI France International Founded in 1907, the Union of French Chambers of Commerce and Industry Abroad brings together 120 accredited French Chambers overseas in 90 countries agreeing to comply with the Union’s ethical rules and professional standards. CCI France International is the largest private French business network in the world with a combined membership base of around 34,844 companies.

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) The CBI is the UK’s premier business organisation, providing a voice for firms at a regional, national and international level to policymakers. We regularly share CBI reports and views to members. Franco-British Council (FBC) The Franco-British Council promotes better understanding between Britain and France. The FBC has always been a supportive partner of the Chamber, most notably in the organisation of our Franco-British Conferences. FrenchConnect Launched in 2015 by three French Tech entrepreneurs living in London, FrenchConnect is a private members club that gathers French digital leaders in London and has also provided support for our annual FrancoBritish Conference. The French Tech London Hub The Chamber locally support the French Tech London Hub, launched in 2016, alongside five other steering members: The French Embassy, Business France, French Connect, French Digital and Frog Valley. The French Tech London Hub is an initiative led by entrepreneurs, backed by the French government which aims to build bridges between major innovation hubs and facilitate the international growth of French Start-ups.

Media Partners

Cultural Partners

For the seventh consecutive year, we renewed our valuable cooperation with the Financial Times.

In 2017, we were very pleased to sign or renew close partnerships with the Royal Opera House, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the French Institute, Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce The Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce is an informal group of Chief executives of Foreign Chambers based in the UK. There are currently around 40 members in the council whose main role is to promote trade and investment between their respective countries and the UK. French Chamber of Great Britain – Overview of the year 2017

Brexit Strategy

Brexit is progressing In 2017, the Chamber worked to provide its members a better understanding of what Brexit will mean for their businesses and their people and helped them prepare for March 2019. Through several Brexit forums and Brexit-themed forum sessions:

–– Brexit survey: In October 2017, the Chamber, with 12 other foreign chambers based in the UK, launched its 2nd member companies survey. Conducted by Ipsos MORI the results revealed the overwhelming majority of foreign businesses say they are quite pessimist that a positive outcome for the UK will be achieved from the Brexit negotiations by March 2019. 1,046 members of the participating chambers took part in this survey. –– President’s Circle Dinners: Each year, our President, Estelle Brachlianoff, organises dinners whose goal is to bring some of the Chamber’s largest employers together to discuss how they are reacting to Brexit and share best practice. Two dinners were organised in 2017.

–– Dedicated Brexit analysis: We have introduced a regular ‘Brexit analysis’ section in INFO to feature members’ views and news related to the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union. –– Brexit joint sessions: Launched in 2016, each forum is focused on a session about Brexit and its impact on different sectors (Finance, Legal, HR), in order to provide our members with an opportunity to openly share and discuss Brexit with their peers. In 2017, the Chamber organised 2 specific sessions: ‘The Impact of Brexit on Talent and Mobility’ and ‘The Impact of Brexit on Finance.’

London should remain a major financial centre for non-European savings. But British banks should not get passporting rights to operate in Europe if they do not accept single market rules, and euro clearing activities for “super systemic” institutions must be located in the currency bloc. François Villeroy de Galhau, Gouverneur of the Banque de France

–– Brexit forum: Launched in March 2017, this cross-sectoral forum, is designed to gather leaders of member companies, consultants and lawyers to discuss the impact of Brexit going forward. In 2017, The Chamber organised 4 sessions. –– Annual Financial Lunch: In November 2017, François Villeroy de Galhau, Governor of the Banque de France, was the guest speaker at the Chamber’s Annual Financial Lunch where he addressed the impact of Brexit for the banks.

Outlook 2018 The Chamber will be involved in an academic research project dedicated to Brexit. The Chamber will play a role of ‘user reviewer’ by reviewing a grant application to the Economic and Social Research Council, entitled, “EU Highly skilled migrants in ‘ordinary cities’: changing plans in contexts of Brexit” conducted by the Universities of Sheffield, Western England and Glasgow.

My main role is to maintain and enhance the Franco-British relationship in the challenging context of the Brexit. The French Chamber in Great Britain and the French Embassy are both involved in the Franco British businesses community in the UK and I view our future as very close and fruitful. Start-ups & SMEs

A one-stop shop for Start-ups It is a great time to be a Start-up as large corporates are increasingly and actively looking to innovate and engage with new concepts, ideas and talent. As well as offering a range of tailored services to help with the development of a business, the French Chamber continues to organise events and opportunities for Start-ups to grow in a supportive, informed and inspiring ecosystem. 2017 saw the continued partnership with the French Tech London Hub as well as the development of partnerships with key players in the London Start-up Scene, notably with London & Partners, Microsoft Accelerator, AngelsCube, EarlyMetrics, FrenchConnect and CFTE. The result of these partnerships has been a great increase in the number of promising Start-ups from all sectors joining and engaging with the French Chamber. Furthermore, these partnerships will play a key role as the French Chamber continues to leverage its unique position between large corporates and Start-ups making introductions and facilitating profitable collaborations to drive business, all the while offering an ever growing knowledge base and network to its members. 2017 also saw the Start-up LAB build on the success of the Pitch Academies and Mentoring program with the creation of Start-up INVEST, a new group of business angels actively looking to invest in early stage Start-ups.

What they say

When establishing into the UK, the French Chamber of Great Britain has been a strong support. In our early days in the UK, having access to decision makers and valuable service was a key factor of success. After 2 years in London, we are still actively involved in the events. Above all, winning the Franco-British Business Awards helped us to convince key-decision makers and increase our credibility in both countries. Antoine Baschiera, CEO and Co-Founder of Earlymetrics

The French Chamber of Great Britain is a vibrant and connected community. It has allowed me to access a wide network of decision makers and entrepreneurs I wouldn’t have been able to meet otherwise. The team at the Chamber is also doing a great job at promoting Start-ups, which has helped us gain much needed visibility within the community. Jean-Michel Chalayer, Co-Founder & CEO of LeSalon

As we started the Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship, we have fully enjoyed the support of the French Chamber. As we are building a platform to address the needs of professionals in finance to upskill in an industry rapidly being transformed by technology, having a partner like the Chamber is very valuable. They helped us to connect to other companies and invited us to events where we could meet potential partners. We are looking forward to having the Chamber as a trusted partner. What they say

Many thanks to the French Chamber for the organization of our trip to London with the EDHEC Global MBA Finance Track. It was a pleasure working with them again on this. Sandra Richez, Head of Global MBA Career Service, EDHEC

Being based at the French Chamber is very convenient for Stanley Robotics as it allows us to work on new projects in the UK and to be directly connected to our clients. Indeed, having offices in central London, offers the ideal environment for a French Start-up to network and develop its activities abroad.

Having worked with several French Chambers around the world, it seemed natural to domicile our London offices at the CCFGB. The Business Centre team was key to the success of Crystal Finance in the UK as they helped us grow faster and be known to the French community.

What they say We used the French Chamber of Commerce last year to recruit for a bilingual French legal secretary. On previous occasions this was found not to be an easy task but their recruitment service were very efficient in listening to our needs and provided an excellent candidate who we have since employed on a permanent basis. I would not hesitate to contact them again should any future needs arise. Gill Farmer, HR & Payroll Assistant, Legal Secretary, GIDE LOYRETTE NOUEL LLP

We benefited from the exceptional reach of the CCFGB Recruitment team when looking for our Office Manager. The quality and responsiveness of the service was second to none. The Recruitment team immediately understood our needs and requirements and sent us very relevant candidates in no time. Press Relations

Newsletters

In 2017, media coverage was obtained through features in different media: AFP, Reuters, Courrier Cadres, France in London, Le Monde Economie, Londres Mag, French Radio London, Ici Londres, The Financial Times, etc.

With a readership of up to 5,000 contacts, our newsletters are issued regularly throughout the year to different target audiences: all members (ACTIVE, CORPORATE and PATRON), and French SMEs/Start-ups intending to do business in the UK. The newsletters are an essential source of information and a great digital opportunity to advertise.

Following the visit in June 2017 of Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France region, and Philippe Hourdain, President of the CCI region, to formalise the presence of the region within the London office hosted at the French Chamber of Commerce in the UK, the French Chamber gained strong visibility in local media such as: France Bleu Picardie, France Nord Pas de Calais, Nord Littoral, Grand Lille TV, etc.

Outlook 2018 The Chamber will keep working on the content of its publications to increase the number of its followers and generate more engagement from the members.
