April, come she will. When streams are ripe and swelled with rain… In case you missed it, last November Art Garfunkel came and sang at the Center. Due to scheduling and logistical issues it was an on, off, on again, off again and then finally on concert that left us all frayed, jittery and sometimes at wits end in the months and days leading up to the concert. Hosting an artist of Art Garfunkel’s stature can be challenging for any organization – doubly challenging for a small community art center like ours. But in the end, Art walked through the door, met everyone, checked on his laundry and then came out on stage for the sound check. And then…then he launched into April Come She Will. And I just melted. While Art’s voice isn’t what it was back in the 60s, it remains as beautiful as ever. Art’s guitarist, Tab Laven, is an incredibly talented musician. Together they walked through the song list. Checking sound. Lighting. Staging. It was intense. It was fun to watch and hear as they tuned their show to our surroundings. At the end of the sound check, I knew that things were going to be all right. We were going to be treated to a great show. I was mistaken. Later that evening when Art launched into April we were treated not just to a great show, but to a truly magical evening. Art and Tab performed songs from throughout Art’s career – from his Simon and Garfunkel days, through his huge 70s albums and into his lesser

known more recent material. They were all fantastic. Interspersed through the songs, Art read prose poems and told stories of his life and career. These backof-the-envelope stories (as they were literally written on envelopes) were fun, sometimes funny and always engaging. And Art was fun and engaging. He connected with the audience right away and held us in the palm of his hand throughout the concert. The concert was magical from the first note of April through to the final bow. Both Art and his guitarist Tab Laven said afterward that the audience was the best – intent, hanging on every note, engaged in every story, laughing at all the right places and sitting, intensely listening during the songs. Art loved the acoustics of the room and the atmosphere of the Center. For him, it was a really great experience. For us, it was why we do it. In the end I can tell people that I met and worked with Art Garfunkel. He was intense, exacting, focused, sharp, at times skewering – at times praising. He reminded me of a kindly uncle. Most importantly I can tell people that he is shorter than I expected and as he put it, he used to have hair that looks like mine. Sincerely, Jim Hoeck President, Cotuit Center for the Arts

Welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts. I’m so happy you are here to experience a part of our 2016 season. It’s an exciting time for us. We have recently acquired new property that will allow us to expand our campus. It’s great that there is already so much activity year-round, but we are out of space. You would be amazed to see where our casts rehearse for their theater productions– where our guest artists hang out before going on stage, where some of our classes are currently taught. It’s a wonderful problem to have! But we really need to expand. Over the course of this season we will be working to fine tune plans for our growth, and with the help of matching grant funding from the MA Cultural Council, we will be able to make some much needed upgrades to ensure a sustainable cultural mecca continues to thrive right here in our community.

One of our current projects is the renovation of our wonderful and intimate Black Box Theater. During the first few months of the year we will finish renovations that began in November of last year. The entrance to the building and the lobby area will be upgraded and the theater itself will expand from 25 seats to 40. The heating and cooling will be upgraded and when we re-open the audience experience in the Black Box will be much better. The only way we have been able to move forward with this renovation at this particular time is due to the generosity of our volunteers, our board of directors, staff, and local businesses. Volunteers have helped rip out walls and floors, have cleaned, painted, spackled, and mopped. And thanks to generous donations from a committed group of local businesses, materials and labor were donated or

heavily discounted. We would not be able to make these improvements without help from Rogers and Marney Builders, Spencer Hallett Plumbing and Heating, Cazeault Roofing, A Concrete Answer, Barger Masonry, JD Custom Building, Lagadinos Construction, L & M Glass, Botello Lumber, Cape & Islands Construction, Griffin Plastering, Franey Mechanical, Agnew Electrical, Stewart Painting, Cotuit Landscaping, Macombers Sanitary Refuse, Cotuit Bay Design, Transition Engineering and more. Of course that doesn’t mean the entire job was free! There are still costs to upgrade electrical, heat and A/C, theater lighting etc., so you’ll still be hearing a lot of Blah, Blah, Blah (translation: please donate) from me as we work to bring you even more great programming. Just look through

this magazine to see what we’ll do this year without much additional space. It’s remarkable. And there is something for everyone this season: the Cape Premiere of “Billy Elliot,” an original and powerful play by local playwright Jim Dalglish that will travel to Boston, a new original musical revue from the team that brought you “What the World Needs Now” and “The Beat Goes On,” plus dozens of concerts and special events sure to sell out. I don’t have enough room here to tell you about each offering, so take the magazine home, leave it on your coffee table or keep it in the bathroom – either is OK, and make a list of the things you want to share with us in 2016. Thanks as always for your support – now enjoy the show! David Kuehn Executive Director

by Stephen Temperley March 8-20

A black comedy about white trash! The story starts when Peggy, a good Christian woman, hits her head on the sink and bleeds to death after tripping over her lover’s wooden legs in a motel room. It leads to chaos erupting in Winter, Texas! You won’t want to miss this campy, outrageous show. Directed by Ian Ryan.

The bizarre career of Florence Foster Jenkins — a socialite who fancied herself an opera singer and, through an awfulness that curdled into a kind of cult, achieved dubious fame from 1932 to her sold-out Carnegie Hall swan song in 1944 — is viewed in flashback, replete with accompaniment by her equally mundane pianist. Featuring Jo Brisbane and our very own David Kuehn, as Cosme. Directed by Mary Arnault.

Theater Spotlight

OUVENIR article by Kim Baker, photos by Alan Trugman

There are always many great reasons to enjoy any Cotuit theater production. Intimate settings. Great casts. Terrific acting and directing. But there are two compelling reasons to see this season’s Main Stage production of Souvenir. David Kuehn and Jo Brisbane. When Kuehn, our very own Do. It. At. Cotuit. Executive Director and exquisite pianist, talked about what drew him to be part of Souvenir, he said this was an opportunity to introduce a new audience to Florence Foster Jenkins and her

20

relationship to Cosmé McMoon, her accompanist, the role Kuehn plays. Souvenir opens with McMoon performing in a piano bar in 1964. McMoon recalls having spent much of his youth playing piano to accompany Jenkins, a singer whose voice was not very good. Jenkins had enough money, though, to host private concerts in her RitzCarlton suite. An eventual concert at Carnegie Hall brought in the public who came to jeer. Kuehn is moved by this unlikely pair from different social strata as McMoon grows “to admire Jenkins and to want to protect her.”

Jo Brisbane, a great Cotuit regular who plays Jenkins, is also interested in Jenkins’ relationship with her accompanist McMoon. McMoon never forsakes Jenkins despite her voice and the ridicule. He is ultimately transformed, says Brisbane, by this act of compassion. According to Brisbane, director Mary Arnault has skillfully drawn out the universal themes of sympathy, vanity, and friendship. The terrific trio of Kuehn, Brisbane, and Arnault brings a play to CCftA that takes the audience beyond sympathy to empathy, to finding the humanity in Jenkins, to discovering what drove her to want to perform.

of amateur artists with delusions of grandeur in this play about relationships, compassion, and human spirit. Brisbane says that even though “swells and sophisticates” came to ridicule Jenkins, the play leads the audience to an ultimate “moment of redemption.” Since Jo wants that redemption to be revealed in the play, we will all just have to see Souvenir and experience it for ourselves.

“Excited? You bet we are!” exclaims Tedi Marsh, producer of the Cape Cod Cabaret Fest. “After more than half a dozen years of the Cabaret Festival, this year we are thrilled to blend Frank Sinatra with Judy Garland on Friday night and to feature a swinging New York Cabaret Show on Saturday night! Where else can this magic happen? Do it at Cotuit!”

De Lorenzo will pay tribute to Frank Sinatra, and a local favorite, Hannah Carrita, who grew up on our stage, will pay tribute to the young Judy Garland. Then on Saturday, March 26, the incomparable Tedi Marsh will be joined by New York City composer and singer Louis Sacco for the swinging NYC set where they will also introduce some special guests.

The annual Cape Cod Cabaret Festival is one of the most popular annual events at the Center. Each year the two-day event celebrates cabaret singing by bringing together local and regional artists. Each evening has its own flavor and audiences are guaranteed a great show. On Friday, March 25, New Yorker Brian

“I was so excited to be asked to perform the Judy Garland tribute” says Hannah Carrita. “When I was 4 years old, I talked my way into voice lessons at the Cape Cod Conservatory. The teacher who agreed to take me on always used to say that I reminded her of Frances Gumm, who grew up to be Judy Garland. So I guess I have

always felt an affinity for her, because she was a baby belter who grew into her big voice, and hopefully I have done the same!”

Tedi Marsh

Professional actor, singer, recording artist, and Talent America’s 2001 “Performer of the Year” Brian De Lorenzo performs his tribute to Sinatra on Friday. Millions of people are fans of Frank Sinatra, but relatively few singers do justice to him. De Lorenzo takes the songs of the legendary performer and interprets them with his own style. Louis Sacco is excited for the festival because “Cotuit Center for the Arts allows me to sing with my dearest friend Tedi Marsh. What’s not to love?!”

Louis Sacco

Fred Boyle on piano, Rich Hill on bass, and Bart Weisman on drums will provide the excellent accompaniment as usual. “Cabaret Festival is a fun time for me,” says Bart Weisman. “It’s full of many musical surprises and a great event for the entire family”

Hannah Carrita

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR

TODDLERS A new audience is being served here at Cotuit this year. A class in “Creative Movement”, designed for children ages 2 to 6, is being offered every Friday at CCftA.

Directed by Miss Lori Dutra, a well-known instructor of childrens’ programs throughout Cape Cod, the Creative Movement class focuses on providing kids with an open play environment and offering a wide variety of activities to do. Through the use of items such as gymnastic wedges, balls, hoops, and parachutes, young children can freely express their ideas and interests without overly structured boundaries. As Miss Lori points out, this open approach allows smaller children not only to be naturally creative, but also provides them with a baseline for developing their artistic skills going forward. As part of the program, parents and/ or their helpers are asked to stay with their children throughout the class. This approach provides the additional benefit of meeting and networking with other young families in the area as well as discovering the wide range of programs available to them here at CCftA and throughout the Cape arts community.

churches and families. She maintains certification in pediatric CPR and first aid as well as being a certified member of the National Youth Sports Coaches Association and a member of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Married and living in Sandwich with two grown children of her own, Lori is pleased to be offering her Creative Movement class here at CCftA. She feels Cotuit provides an intimate environment that allows the family to experience more personal interaction while making kids feel safe and able to grow in self-esteem. As she states, “Time is so precious with these kids. This program helps to open up a world of opportunities for them to experience and contribute to their personal growth. It is so rewarding to be able to be a part of that experience.” Now kids of all ages are able to do it at Cotuit!

Originally from Plymouth, Lori Dutra has lived and worked on Cape Cod for the last 30 years providing programs for children ages 2 to 16. She is the owner of Klub Kidz, a company that offers children’s classes and parties for businesses, clubs, organizations,

SHIFTING AND Ann Guiliani

UNFOLDING “SHIFTING AND UNFOLDING” features close to 40 images: Paintings, Prints and Multi-Media Drawings. Sometimes these varied disciplines all merge together. When does a drawing become a painting? or a Print? The lines of demarcation can be blurred. The exhibit’s intention is to open up a dialogue about how images develop. We know they correlate closely to life and life experiences. Creating any Work of Art involves a synthesis of Idea and Form as well as Materials and Techniques. The thrust of this exhibition is to touch upon the Creative Process itself: how images develop, and how they Shift and Unfold into newer imagery. However, while there may be varied materials and techniques as well as themes, there is a common thread in all of my Art. There is the realization that spontaneity and gestural mark-making with brush or any tool, involves an engagement with “the moment” and that moment is fraught with something in a constant state of flux. Fluid movement of media across its surface suggests that “Movement” of some sort has played a signicant role. It may be what is discerned in Nature itself, or it could

on her exhibit

be a state of mind or the creative act itself. For me, “Movement” becomes something experienced in Time and Place and something that needs to be expressed. The exhibit features “Drawing From a Moving Car” series as well as six foot drawings of “Palms in the Wind”. There will also be some work from a series I call “Symbiosis”, which has to do with spaces between branches: The Attraction of Opposites or the empty void of Space versus Density. How these opposites create a movement towards one another or away from one another is an Abstract concept. Both “Palms in the Wind” and “Symbiosis” illustrate the dynamic force of wind or rain in Nature as well as what can happen in the void or empty space. Now more recently, images are inspired by the Movement of Water, its currents and continual flow. “Waterworks” (prints and paintings). Increasingly, my own development as an Artist is to realize that the Final Image is something autonomous and that the materials I work with can have their own personality. They can direct me in new and exciting ways. All I have to do is to “DO IT.” Then to step back and let it “Shift and Unfold” on its own terms, moving me in new directions.

A RECIPE FOR

SUCCESS by ALEX SPECK

• 1 part Cape Cod CAN! • 1 part CCftA • Mix • Heat • Success!

Above: Art is for Everyone program

72

Art is for everyone. During a time when people around the world are fighting to remain separate, art is one thing that unifies us all. Everyone can love and appreciate art, and no one should be denied the opportunity to participate in the arts. This notion is something we uphold at Cotuit Center for the Arts, and we practice what we preach. Since 2005, CCftA has been a meeting place for the Brain Injury Support Group, as well as an art educator for many individuals living on Cape Cod with disabilities, such as those at the May Institute. If you had the opportunity to see Scary Gary’s Graveyard of Golden Oldies Radio Show here this past summer, you may be familiar with our relationship with the producer of this show, the Cape Cod Collaborative Arts Network, also known as CapeCodCAN! With delight, I’d like to announce that effective January 1, 2016, CapeCodCAN! will become a full program of Cotuit Center for the Arts. This merger not only bolsters our educational outreach, but it also continues to

support our unwavering advocacy for artists living with disabilities.

revue called Broadway and Beyond, was in fact performed on our stage in January of 2013. Since then, they have had subsequent productions here and are looking forward to another musical showcase in the fall of 2016. Executive Director David Kuehn has been a longtime board member of CapeCodCAN! Furthermore, Director of Development Jennifer Cummings has worked with Jim Hurley on various philanthropic initiatives for several years. “We are thrilled to join forces with CapeCodCAN!,” Cummings said. “Jim has worked tirelessly for more than a decade, and we are honored that he’s passing us the torch. These are large shoes to fill.” Hurley will continue to play a large administrative role during the transition period, alongside myself, David Kuehn, and several other members from both organizations.

CapeCodCAN! is a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 under the leadership of Managing Director Jim Hurley. It offers a variety of opportunities in the arts for people living with disabilities and promotes inclusion and celebration of capabilities, regardless of disabilities. In the 2015 annual Art is for Everyone exhibit, CapeCodCAN! showcased the work of approximately 130 participants. Talented Cape artists and teachers worked with these participants for eight weeks of class instruction at 13 different organizations. The annual exhibit is a platform of personal expression for the participants, many of whom sell their work at the show and beyond at local craft fairs. This gives many people with disabilities the confidence to call themselves Filling Jim’s shoes is not something we can artists and pursue their creative abilities do; however, we “CAN!” continue to provide further, including earning income and opportunities for inclusion and participation embarking on a career in the arts. The merger between CapeCodCAN! and CCftA in the arts for people with disabilities on seems natural and fortuitous, as the first-ever Cape Cod. Two distinct powerful organizations, one umbrella, one mission: this is a recipe for performance for CapeCodCAN!, a musical success.

MOMS ON

BROADWAY! Back by popular demand for the third year in a row, “Moms on Broadway” is the perfect way to celebrate the joys and frustrations of motherhood through song and dance. This year the Moms will perform the show twice – on Friday, May 6 then again on Mother’s day. I asked Gwen Bainier, the creator and director of the show, to tell me a little about the history. Here’s what she had to say:

My initial inspiration for the ‘Moms on Broadway’ concept was my ‘Cape Cod Kids on Broadway’ musical theater workshops and productions. I thought it would be fun to do a show with women who wanted to get out of their ‘mom box’ and try something different out of the normal comfort zone. That’s why the show favors comedic and sometimes irreverent and risqué material. The repertoire is chosen specifically with that in mind...so people can be funny, bawdy, sarcastic, sexy, crazy, ‘out there’, etc. Some people

show up with specific songs they want to do. Generally I push people to do stuff they might initially think they can’t or wouldn’t normally do. We tend to have some risqué material with revealing costumes which is fun when you’re used to wearing jeans and carpool shoes. We’ve also raised the bar in terms of choreography and singing. Several cast members started taking tap classes so last year we included a tap number and several additional choreographed numbers. I also chose harder group material which challenged our

harmonizing skills... but as a result the group is now quite good at multi-part singing. Most of the cast do not have a theatrical background and many never did any singing or dancing before Moms on Broadway (MOB!). I think the cast was nervous before the first show two years ago but we sold out and it well really well! The first shows were such a high for the cast! After that there was no turning back.

comedy and fun! I want people to have a really great time sitting back with their drinks and falling off their chairs laughing (not because they are drunk). People should come away feeling uplifted, happy and like they’ve been royally entertained!

MOMS ON BROADWAY Friday May 6 at 7:30pm Sunday (Mother’s Day) May 8 at 5:00pm

A great reason to get tickets now for our next show is that our reputation has grown and people come back for more! People can expect more dancing and choreography and definitely more

Unsafe

article by Marilyn Rowland

Playwright Jim Dalglish was in New York on September 11, 2001, setting up for a presentation on the 59th floor of the Standard & Poor’s building, when two planes slammed into the nearby World Trade Center. From the windows of the S&P Boardroom, he watched in horror as the buildings crumpled and those who could escape fled. “I’m still haunted by what happened that day and how it affected people’s lives in the years that followed - not only on a national and international level, but on a deeply personal one. In the course of one horrible day, we became insecure as a culture. That insecurity has not only allowed our government to make a series of foreign policy blunders, but it has seeped into the very fabric of our society and heightened our fear of the outside world. One only has to look at today’s headlines to see how

9/11 continues to plague us. My response to this crisis was to write a play that uses an American family - something we can all relate to – as a metaphor to explore this harrowing social transition,” said Dalglish. The play, a psychological thriller called “Unsafe,” explores our post-9/11 world and “the flimsy barricades we all build and the fantasies we fabricate to keep this terrifying new world at bay—a world that through our arrogance, neglect, and self-deception we helped create,” said Dalglish. Selected as a semifinalist at the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, “Unsafe” will have its world premiere at Cotuit Center for the Arts March 31 to April 10, and from there, Dalglish will take it to the Boston Center for the Arts (Plaza Stage) April 15 to 30.

New York in the New Millenium An edgy, contemporary drama, “Unsafe” is set in New York a year and a half after the terrorist attacks. As a heavy mid-winter blizzard blankets Tribeca under three feet of snow, Lisa, a talented musician who lost her

80

husband when the north tower collapsed, is celebrating her fortieth birthday. She’s not as enthusiastic about the party as those attending: her doting father, eight-year-old daughter and the neurologist who wishes

to write a book about William’s Syndrome - a rare genetic condition her daughter was born with. But that doesn’t stop her fun-loving mother from trying to throw a party no one will ever forget. Which is what happens when Will, Lisa’s troubled twenty-year-old stepson, crashes the celebration. After the party winds down – her daughter put to bed, the good doctor given the brush-off and the guests turned out into the snow – Lisa finds herself 40 years old and alone, with only the memories of her dead husband and the comfort of her mother’s half-empty bottle of vodka. Then Will returns.

Half-frozen and strung-out on crystal meth, he has nowhere to go. As night passes and snow piles high on the abandoned streets, Lisa begins to see this troubled boy with chameleon charm as her last chance to recover all that she’s lost. His arrival triggers a flurry of memories - fond, painful, frightening - and unintentionally exposes Lisa and her family to the dangers that plague him - and the world at large - on the streets below. “During the course of the the play, I take the audience to some harrowing, frightening, dangerous and thrilling places that culminate in a devastating ending that is not without hope,” said Dalglish.

Cotuit Center for the Arts “Unsafe” was presented in January 2014 as a staged reading at Cotuit Center for the Arts’ 2nd Wednesday Theater. More than 100 people attended the reading, and most of them stayed afterward for the discussion, talking about the play and sharing their own 9/11 experiences. “I’ve discovered that everyone has a 9-11 story. It impacted every American who was alive that

day. And they are hungry to share - to tell what happened to them and their loved ones and to express their feelings. I think enough time has passed that people feel that they can start telling their stories. To share them and relive their experiences in a safe environment. I hope my play will provide a nurturing environment that will allow audiences to do so. That’s what happened at Cotuit after my play was read,” said Dalglish.

Companion Art Exhibit Seeing what an effect the play had on the people who had attended the reading, Cotuit Center for the Arts decided to do a companion art exhibit that will give people a chance to express their own feelings about the World Trade Center attacks on life in America. Artists working in all media and writers in all genres are invited to submit works for “Unsafe: Life After 9/11,” a juried art show about the longterm impacts of the attacks on family and society. Artists are encouraged to write accompanying text to explain the significance of their artwork, and writers are encouraged to submit objects or documents that provide physical context for their written passages. Short video diaries or remembrances are also encouraged. Deadline for

submission is February 1, 2016. Works will be on exhibit from March 24 to April 23, with an opening reception of April 2, 2016. In addition to the juried show, there will be a chalkboard wall covering in the hall upstairs at the center where people can go write down their own 9/11 experiences on the spot. Dalglish, who lives in Boston, is the author of more than 25 plays, including “Bark Park: Life at Both Ends of the Leash,” which played to sold-out crowds at the Black Box Theater. His works have been produced across the US and in Great Britain and many have won awards. He is a member of Boston Public Works, a collaborative group of writers who produce their own plays.

RENOVATION OF THE BLACK BOX You may have heard that we are renovating our Black Box theatre. We are excited about this wonderful remodeling project which will result in more seats in the Black Box theatre, a lobby, updated bathrooms, a green room for actors, an improved sound booth and handicap accessibility. The demolition has been accomplished thanks to a few well-attended volunteer days and we are now in the process of the theatre improvements to be completed by April. Tickets for shows in this unique space have become increasingly more difficult to acquire as the popularity of the space and the programming continues to grow. If you tried to get into any of our fall shows you may have found out first hand that all of the productions in the Black Box are sell-outs! With that in mind, we went out into the community to see whether we could rally some support for an expansion and we are happy to say that have been overwhelmed with offers to help. With more than 20 contractors signed onto the project pledging more than $250,000 in labor and materials, our dreams of a bigger venue are becoming a reality.

Article by Tracy LaBonte

Much of this support is made possible with the help and enthusiasm of two of our board members who work directly with contractors every day. Spencer Hallett, owner of Spencer Hallett Plumbing & Heating, Inc has managed to turn many of his professional relationships into support for Cotuit Center for the Arts. Spencer is committed to the feeling of community that exists here at the Center and to the quality of entertainment that we bring to people and feels that it’s easy to ask for support from his colleagues when he talks about what makes our Center so unique. He states that “as a supporter of a non-profit arts center it is my responsibility to help Cotuit Center for the Arts in as many ways as possible” and along with his months of planning and scheduling, materials and countless hours of labor through his own company, his enthusiasm for letting people know how their contribution helps is how he is bringing his commitment to fruition. Gary Souza, owner of Rogers and Marney Builders, echoes the same loyalty to the cause through his contributions of supervision,

scheduling, design, drafting, vendor procurement and general contracting services for the project. He says “It’s very easy to support and donate to an organization whose members believe so passionately in entertaining and educating the community about the arts.” He goes on to say that “since joining the board of directors in August of 2014 I have gained an immense appreciation for the organization because of the people involved and their passion to carry out the goals of the Center. It is impressive to me that this group of people have grown the Center to what it is today. I am inspired to support it further as we expand our programming and expand and upgrade our campus.” Russ Cazeault owner of Cazeault Roofing and Solar is donating a new, standing seam metal roof for the building. He doesn’t see his generosity as a donation but rather as a way of helping, something he feels that all people

should be doing in their everyday lives. About his choice of roof he says that “architecture begins with ART. There is a lot that can be done with roofs besides standard shingles and I thought this would be a great project to illustrate that.” In addition to the three businesses mentioned above there are many more organizations donating labor and materials to the Black Box project including A Concrete Answer, Barger Masonry, JD Custom Building, Botello Lumber, Lagadinos Construction, L&M Glass, Cape & Islands Construction, Cape Cod Insulation, Griffin Plastering, RJ Franey Mechanical, RCA Electrical, Stewart Painting, Cotuit Landscaping, Macomber’s Sanitary Refuse, Cotuit Bay Design, and Transition Engineering, Inc. Please patronize these terrific organizations and let them know how much we all appreciate their support and loyalty. We love it when they Do It. At Cotuit.

Member Spotlight

Jane Walsh and John Greene Cotuit Center for the Arts has gained some enthusiastic new members in Jane Walsh and John Greene. These Massachusetts natives have been Cape Codders on and off since the 1970’s and now happily call Sandwich home. This year they arrived on our doorstep eager to take in some great theatre and fabulous music. While we hope we lived up to their expectations it can certainly be said that they have lived up to ours! From the first heartfelt email that Jane sent to us after a show thanking the cast for a job well done, we have been enjoying the company of these wonderful folks who love to Do It. At Cotuit. John, a Boston College graduate, has been in the transportation industry since he was a child and his parents owned a trucking company. After a long career in management with Plymouth and Brockton Street Railway Company and then with international transportation company Transdev, John now likes to relax with another mode of transportation- on their trawler, “Faith”, which they keep in Cataumet. Jane is still workingshe has been with Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (OCB) for 25 years and loves what she does. Through OCB, together, they volunteer their time and talents to participate in SE Asia eye mission projects – “it is so gratifying to work with top eye care specialists in the US to bring sight restoring services half way around the globe.”

Jane and John come to a wide variety of shows and events and claim that they can never decide whether they prefer our theatre or concerts. Jane says the Center has “good Karma” and she loves the way the way the Center “wraps itself around you” when you become a member. John feels that we are a small enough organization to allow staff and members to really get to know each other and they both appreciate that familiarity. Because of our size they feel we can offer patrons an “up close and personal experience” which is something that both Jane and John find appealing when they come to a show. We have had a blast getting to know Jane and John and we look forward to seeing more performances with them in 2016. We even know their favorite seats (balcony, middle) so we can make sure not to miss them when they are here!

Board Member Spotlight A Conversation with

Joyce Ginouves CCFTA: How long have you been on the Board? Joyce Ginouves: Three years. CCFTA: Why did you join? JG: I have always been a big fan of the Center but after working on a Historical Film Series with David I was so impressed with him and what he is accomplishing I wanted to join the Board and use my business skills to further the mission. CCFTA: Where’d you grow up and how and where did you end up on the Cape? JG: I grew up in NYC where I was introduced to theater at a very young age. I studied drama and dance while in school and performed in many productions. I worked in NYC and in 1989 received a great promotion and moved to corporate headquarters in Massachusetts. We had a summer home on the Cape for years and I decided to try living on the Cape while commuting 90 miles each way. I fell in love with Cotuit and have been here ever since.

organization became a branch of the American Parkinson Disease Association Massachusetts Chapter. We offer education, wellness, and support to patients, caregivers, and families living with this disease. I’m very proud of what this organization is doing to support the over 1,000 patients here on the Cape. CCFTA: What do you do for fun? JG: Theater, movies, dance, drama and singing classes, gardening, being with my wonderful family, or a night out with my girlfriends. CCFTA: What do you love about the Center? JG: Love being part of an organization that brings so much joy to the community with all of the projects, programs, and classes that are offered. CCFTA: How about what you love about being on the Board? JG: Working with David and such a great group of people with diverse backgrounds who are committed to making this the most successful Arts Center on the Cape.

CCFTA: College? JG: I studied business at Somerset College and worked in sales and marketing in the High Tech industry for 30 years. CCFTA: Kids? Grandkids? JG: Three daughters and eight grandchildren! CCFTA: You are the president of the Parkinson’s Support Network on Cape Cod. Can you tell us a little about that? JG: My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson disease in 2003. We searched for support here on the Cape and none was available. I was determined to start a support organization to help other families living with the disease. Thus The Parkinson Support Network of Cape Cod was formed in collaboration with Boston Medical Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital of Cape Cod, and Cape Cod Hospital. Volunteer Spotlight A Conversation with Tom “TC” Crutchfield CCftA: How long have you been volunteering at the Center?

CCftA: Why do you volunteer for the Center?

TC: After I moved here from Florida, I was an usher for the Center’s 2012 production of Company and loved the organization so much I stayed!

TC: I volunteer for the Center because it is so exciting to be a part of a great team of talented and kind people. There is a family atmosphere here and it is very welcoming – I am so glad and grateful to be a part of it all. It’s exciting to see how we are growing.

CCftA: What is your background for the kind of volunteer work you do? TC: I am a professional hairdresser and a wedding and party planner. I put my hairdressing skills to work in almost every production here – styling the actors’ own hair and also styling and maintaining our wig collection. The party and wedding planning skills make me very organized and methodical in my work – and of course I am ALWAYS early!

97

CCftA: What’s your favorite part of the job? TC: My favorite part of the job is watching a show grow from read-through around a table to full production complete with set and costumes and hair-dos – the magic of the theater! I am learning so many new things with every new show. And of course I love the laughter and smiles – it is a joy to volunteer here – ALL the staff and other volunteers are always encouraging and supportive. We really are a welcoming hub here at the Center – that means so much!

Backstage Spotlight

Nick Bucchianieri and Drew Dalton Interview by Hannah

McLaughlin

Many of us know how much work it takes to put on a successful production. We need actors, costumes, props, set pieces, lights, sound and much more. But does anyone know what goes on behind the scenes? I had the pleasure of working with crew members Nick Bucchianieri and Drew Dalton on Cotuit’s stage production of “Gypsy”. Both have previous backstage experience with productions here at Cotuit, working as a spotlight operator or as stage hands. I interviewed Nick and Drew about their experiences here at CCftA. CCFTA: How did you first become involved with Cotuit Center for the Arts?

Drew: I like everything about crewing backstage, especially being a part of making the various productions a success and getting caught up in the energy of the talented actors and staff.

Drew: I became involved with CCftA when Nick needed some help covering days for a spotlight gig in the summer of 2014. I stepped in and loved the work, environment and people! Nick and I make a great team because we’re best friends (since 6 months of age) and live close enough to each other that our parents (who are also close friends) can share in driving us to and from work. Nick: Last summer I was thinking about getting into theater but also about getting a job. I contacted Cotuit since I live very close to the arts center. Luckily I called them right at a time when they needed help. I was put on spot for Grey Gardens, and Drew was my sub for when I was gone. Ever since the Center has used us for any production they need help on. CCFTA: What do you like about crewing backstage?

Nick: I enjoy crewing backstage for a multitude of reasons. First and foremost the people at the theater are great to work with. I also enjoy helping with a lot of different parts of a show. There are also many jobs that a crew member can take on, such as spotlight operator, stagehand, or sound operator. CCFTA: Can you give a brief explanation of what crewing or teching is? Drew: Crewing and/or teching is being available to do whatever is necessary “backstage” to help the actors, orchestra, and CCftA staff with making the production a success! This includes spotlight, stagehand, or sound/light cue guy.

98

Nick: Usually when you crew for a show you have one main role, such as spot operator. Your job entails more than that though. You act as a helping hand for the director/stage manager. Spiking furniture, setting up lights back stage, and giving the actors call times are all included in the job.

however, I’d go with 33 Variations. For this show, Drew and I were both stagehands. It was a cast of only about nine or so but they were all excellent and made the play enjoyable to watch over and over.

CCFTA: What has been your favorite production you have worked on here?

Drew: My name is actually Richard Andrew Dalton II so my initials are RAD!

Drew: My favorite CCftA production thus far was 33 Variations because it was a phenomenal play with strong message communicated by a very small group of highly talented actors.

Nick: When I was really little my favorite movie was the Pirates of the Caribbean. I was super excited to go to Disney World and go on the ride for the movie. About half way through the ride I got really freaked out and almost jumped off the boat. I’ve never been back to Disney World.

Nick: All of the productions at Cotuit have been great. If I had to pick a favorite

CCFTA: What is a fun fact about yourselves that we wouldn’t know?
