A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Fiddler on the Roof is a story about traditions: those that define us and those that we must ultimately change in order to survive. It is the tale of a father struggling to reconcile the old ways with the new world, of a family caught in the tides of history, and of a village—like so many others throughout history—displaced by forces beyond their control.

In directing this production, I was struck by how deeply Fiddler on the Roof speaks to our own time. In a world of constant change, where the old ways often clash with modern realities, we too are challenged to hold on to our identities while adapting to the future. I wanted to explore the depth of this tension, highlighting the universal human experience of seeking balance between tradition and progress.

I am thrilled to be directing this show at Cotuit Center for the Arts. This story, while set in a small village in early 20th century Russia, carries a timeless message about love, faith, and resilience. The Arts are a living example of that timeless message.

At the audition for this show, I asked every auditioner why Fiddler on the Roof was important to them. Everyone had a personal story of connection to this timeless and profound piece of theatre. Tonight, I encourage you to answer the same question as you join us in Anatevka.

I am incredibly grateful to the talented cast, crew, and creative team who have shared their talents and love to bring this show to life. Together, we invite you to reflect on your own traditions, your own families, and the changes that continue to shape our lives. Thank you for sharing this journey with us, and we hope you enjoy the show.

Love, Donna
