Welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts, and let me be the first to say “Let Us Entertain You!” As I write this, another year is coming to a close. During the period in which we distribute this magazine, I will celebrate my 5th year at the Center. It’s just incredible to think of all the great programming we’ve presented, and more incredible to reflect on the amazing community that continues to flourish here. When I began my relationship with many of you, we had 167 members and I had a goal of reaching 250. 1500 of you are now members of our family (ummm, if you’re reading this and not already member, now is the perfect time to join the club!) with over 100 in the prestigious Center Circle.
improved outdoor lighting and solved serious parking and safety issues together.
We’ve taught you how to play the ukulele, how to become a better writer or actor, how to paint and draw and make a scary mask for Halloween. During the past five years, we’ve presented some outstanding main stage productions featuring performances and production values as good as you’ll find anywhere, such as 33 Variations (I’m a little biased), Company, Spamalot, Jacques Brel, Black Comedy, Cabaret, Anything Goes, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, 12 Angry Men, 5 Women Wearing the Same Dress, 39 Steps, Glengarry Glen Ross, Grey Gardens, Willy Wonka, Doubt, A Grand Night for Singing, Dark of the Moon, Treasure Island – Together we’ve cleaned up the house on Route 28 and now present and so many more. twelve provocative theatrical And we’ve presented some of productions each year in our Black the finest concerts and musical Box Theater. We’ve knocked down experiences in an intimate setting walls together and installed floors including an exclusive performance together to create more classroom by Judy Collins. space; we’ve cleaned gutters together and raised money to And when it comes to fundraisers replace leaky roofs together; we’ve and parties, nobody does it better.
If you have read this far, you are already supporting us, so I say thank you. If you love the Center as much as I do, please help me continue to bring in new members, new sponsors, new donors, new volunteers. It’s not easy funding what we do, but together we can. And if you can do that for us, let us do something for you – it’s a sentiment I love, taken from the lyrics of an iconic song from this summer’s musical extravaganza, GYPSY! -“Let us entertain you. Let us make you smile. Let us do a few tricks. Our signature summer fundraiser “Entertainment Tonight” is an off-the-charts evening, the new Kentucky Derby Gala is the new “not to be missed” event, and the annual Poetry and Chili Fest and our Halloween Art and Souls Masquerade Ball have become renowned state-wide. And things just keep getting better – I wish I had time here to list everything we have planned for the year – the Mainstage, Black Box, and Second Wednesday Theater offerings are fabulous, we have music and special events for every taste, and there will be many surprise and exclusive events for all you Center Circle members.
Some old and then some new tricks. We’re very versatile. And if you’re real good, we’ll make you feel good. We want your spirits to climb. So let us entertain you, and we’ll have a real good time.” Enjoy your time with us and thanks again for being here – I hope your spirits climb at CCftA in 2015. David Kuehn Executive Director

one flew over the cuckoo’s nest
a musical revue conceived by Ruth Condon Price February 12-22
by Dale Wasserman April 14-26
A tribute to the music of the 60s from the creative team behind 2014’s smash hit “What the World Needs Now: A Musical Tribute to Burt Bacharach.” You won’t want to miss this nostalgic production featuring some of the Cape’s best voices.
Tyrannical Nurse Ratched rules her psychiatric ward with an iron fist and a penchant for electro-shock therapy. Into her ordered domain enters the boisterous Randle P. McMurphy, intent on disruption and showing the other patients a good time. A titanic battle of wills emerges. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest explores the boundaries between conformity and individuality, sanity and madness with a devastating effect.

Theater Spotlight
Oleanna Oleanna is one of Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s most controversial dramas. Now this landmark play comes to Cotuit with the crackle and force of wildfire. This gripping new production, directed by John Williams, will have audiences gasping and is sure to provoke discussion.
Oleanna has electrifying dialogue, blazing emotion, and an ending that will leave you talking for weeks. In this riveting drama, a college professor and his female student become embroiled in a war of words that takes
a dangerous turn. As their serene campus transforms into a battleground for justice, Mamet’s explosive by Christine Ernst masterpiece dares you to take a side... if you can. Director john Williams states, “The characters in Oleanna find themselves in an impossible place; they speak a common language, but their miscommunication, awkward and almost farcical at first, quickly becomes destructive and psychologically wounding, and the devastating climax can leave the audience bewildered, enraged, saddened. Mamet tackles the issues of sexual harassment and political correctness, along with a “failure to communicate” (the play premiered in 1992), but the stew into which he tosses these issues is still, more than two decades later, one that can make an audience member’s blood boil. I want the audience to feel uncomfortable, uneasy, distressed, and the Black Box is the perfect venue for that. Its intimacy and immediacy provide the perfect setting.” Cotuit audiences may remember John from his performances as The Marquis in Quills, and The Librarian in Underneath the Lintel. This will be the second show John has directed at Cotuit Center for the Arts (A.R.Gurney’s Sylvia was presented on the Main Stage a few years back). He looks forward to working in the Black Box this time around, and we are happy to have him back.

Music/Special Event Spotlight
If You LISTEN… You Will HEAR… Some REAL Appreciating the nuances and subtleties of great jazz vocalists requires more than just familiarity with the songs. The pathway to that appreciation is an attentive set of ears. The reward is a joyful, heart-filled experience when a truly great artist performs his/her magic. Cotuit Center for the Arts will be graced on February 27th and 28th with a performance by jazz singer, Cerise, who will appear with the Charlie Jamieson trio and guest musician George Machon. Paying tribute to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, and others, Cerise will sing her interpretations of melodies with one thing on her mind: to touch the deepest part of your soul! Cerise is a sensitive vocalist whose subtleties arouse the listener via nuances of tone, delicate melodic variations, and a keen sense of knowing when to push the audience and when to reel them in. All in all, she is a clever instrument of emotion and an eloquent channel for some of the greatest songs ever written. article by David M. Cohen
28
JAZZ!
Charlie Jamieson, on piano, provides an understated elegance by leading each song through its peaks and valleys while coloring the melody with delicious harmonies. Truly a joy to watch and listen to, Phil Vitale plays drums with the enthusiasm of a kid in a toy store. Add to that his gift of creativity and you get to hear sounds in parts of songs that you surely never imagined. On bass, the eclectic Nick Rice, will sometimes play the instrument way into its upper register using his six-string electric bass. Not only does he support melodic lines of the keyboard and voice, he sometimes is the melodic voice. George Machon’s energetic and robust trumpet sounds and sweet phrases on flute will round out the concert’s color pallet along with his delightful play of hand percussion instruments. Cerise’s vocal magic is not simply the product of her talent. She grew up surrounded by family members
harmonizing and dancing as the music of the day lifted their spirits even while doing the most mundane of chores. Cerise recognized early the beauty of voices like Nat King Cole and Sarah Vaughn. She was inspired by artists like Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, and Toni Braxton and learned how to create unique colors with her own voice. Cerise later expanded her reach singing with the Marin County soul group, The James Mosley Band, and later joined Africombo, the world music band, performing Reggae, AfroCuban, and Caribbean music. These professional “excursions,” as well as her training with award winning vocal coach, Raz Kennedy, and the legendary Bob Hayes, give Cerise a firm foundation on which to base every song interpretation. But it is her internal spirit and love for singing that emanates from each song she performs. You’ll be surrounded by her silky sound as the beauty of her voice resonates in every corner of the room. With each soulful phrase, she evokes the emotional depth of each lyric with a passion uniquely her own. Come Listen!

The Kids Are Alright After dedicating 24 years to teaching art in the schools of Barnstable and Bourne, it was a natural progression for Karen Maker of Cotuit to become part of the CCftA’s education faculty. Having taught every age group from kindergarten through high school during her career, Karen found a combination of extensive resources available at the Center which provided her the flexibility to have both the time and space to go beyond the limitations of traditional curriculum programs while continuing to contribute to the local community. Now in her second year here, Karen has focused on spreading the word that Cotuit provides excellent art education for children as well as adults. She has demonstrated that by developing new programs that will appeal to the kids while, at the same time, open up the full range of their creative capabilities in the classroom. A perfect example of this approach is the class that Karen is teaching at the Center this April school vacation week. The program is designed to give students in grades 2 through 5 the opportunity to

work on art projects they just wouldn’t have enough time for during the normal school year. Classes are scheduled for Monday through Friday mornings and will be about 2 to 3 hours long. A unique aspect of the program is the fact that the students will work in a different medium each day over the five days’ time. For example, one day may focus on acrylic, the next day switch to watercolors, and a third day, pen and ink. While the goal is for each student to complete that day’s assignment, the class will provide the flexibility for any individual to carry over work to the next day, especially if the person shows a special interest or talent in that area. This class is just the latest example of the outstanding creative approaches Cotuit provides for bringing the arts to the youth of our community, and Karen Maker is a key educator at the Center who makes it happen. The Process of Picture Books
Flaming Snot Rockets! It’s Jim Hill – mild mannered designer by day, children’s book creator by night! He writes stories packed with humor, heart, and plenty of action and also designs logos, websites, and all the marketing collateral you’ll ever need. He is a member of SCBWI, the President of the Cape Cod Writers Center, and holds an MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from VCFA. Jim lives on Cape Cod with his wife and son, within walking distance of an awesome playground, the village library, and their favorite ice cream shop. He is curating the show, The Process of Picture Books, in the Gallery February 28 through March 29. Here’s what he has to say about the exhibit –
42
This group show examines the life cycle of the picture book from initial ideas and sketches, through thumbnails, character design and story development. Why? To show the depth of thought and craft that goes into creating them. Maybe I’m a tad defensive on this subject, but it drives me crazy when picture books are dismissed because they’re considered simplistic or a form of throw-away art. Picture book illustrators strive, sweat, and bleed their hearts onto every page of the finished product. Product – maybe that word is the problem with proper artistic recognition. When we see the final printed book, the product, it’s easy to forget that the images and stories don’t spring forth fully formed from the creator’s heads. We don’t normally get to peek behind the curtain of process and see the bare-bone beginnings where imagination finds form in reality. I’m a rabid fan of picture books, and the opportunity to see how different artists approach their craft is catnip to me. Viewing the first (often terrible) sketches that evolve into the evocative finished art is an inspiration
that says “you can do this, if you do the work.” That’s a gift to all artists, whatever their medium. The expression of those initial ideas, rough visual drafts, dare us to push our notions, to nurture them, to tend them until they transform into finished art. The illustrators participating in this show are inviting the viewers in for a time-lapse look at that birthing process. What comes first? Words? Pictures? There’s a slightly different answer depending on the book. Drawing on both published and pre-published picture book illustrators from the Cape, New England, and beyond, this show will be a delight for believers in story magic, no matter their age.

Letter from
The Board President As I sit here on a cold November morning, writing my letter for the Winter/Spring Booklet, I can’t help thinking about the incredible effort that just took place creating the half round “Annie” stage. It seemed like a simple enough project. Let’s build a strong sturdy platform that can be broken down and reconfigured which works nicely with our new side-stage riser configuration – yeah, a sixteen foot radius circular floating stage with a complementary step. Or as we put it initially, “Our current stage is getting a bit rickety. What if we build a round stage that goes over there?” Ok. So it wasn’t quite as simple as it seemed. What was incredible was that we had over 30 volunteers turn out over the course of four days to help build the new stage. We had young and old, male and female, skilled carpenters and people without building experience who turn out to dive in and lend a hand. Even the “Annie” orphans jumped in to help. It was incredible. It was the greatest feeling to have so many people come out to help create such a unique and wonderful (and heavy) stage. Thank you to all who helped. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We couldn’t have done it without you. And likewise to all who participate in our programs and who volunteer and help make all that happens here at the Center. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We truly can’t do it without you. Thank you, Jim Hoeck President, Cotuit Center for the Arts P.S. We don’t normally allow orphans to work, but Miss Hannigan assured us that they wanted to pitch in.

In the month of January and for most of February, you will notice that the art seems a little lower and the volume is a tad higher in our galleries. That’s because CCftA will once again host the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s family friendly Winter Exhibit. This annual juried show features work by dozens of living (yes, that’s a prerequisite) artists who make their homes and their art on Cape Cod. This year they have been asked to interpret the show’s title, Opposites Attract. A multitude of mediums and a variety of sizes and styles will be represented. The chosen works are displayed a full foot lower than usual, at a four foot center, to accommodate the scores of school children who visit from every corner of the Cape. Each piece is accompanied by a brief statement by the artist to provide an explanation of its meaning or the process used in its creation. During their trip, the groups of kids, ranging from pre-K through grade 12, are lead on an interactive tour by AFCC staff and volunteer docents. Questions and comments are encouraged, when using “inside voices,” of course. Special attention is given to point out work by artists who hail from the same town
as the group. Hands raise high when the kids realize that an exhibiting artist is a neighbor, teacher, or parent of a classmate. The school groups also get a chance to create some take-home art in our Studio. Projects are designed to pair with the theme of the exhibit and enhance the experience of the visit. Teachers and parents accompanying the classes are invited to make art, too. They often surprise themselves and delight the children with their own success. Since its inception in 2007, the AFCC Winter Exhibit at Cotuit Center for the Arts has excelled in its primary purpose to inspire children and adults to see and appreciate art in their world. If you stop by the Center during the same time that a school group is visiting, please join a tour. Chances are you will meet an artist or two, you may glean a little extra information about some of the works, and you will surely be treated to a few wonderful, unfiltered observations by the kids. In short, you’ll be glad you did!

CCftA recently sat down with Ruth Condon and Anthony Teixiera to talk about their collaboration to produce The Beat Goes On: Music of the 60s, our mainstage production opening February 10. Ruth is producer and Anthony directs. CCftA: Why the music of the 60s? Anthony: It’s simple: because the music of the 60s is INCREDIBLE. It’s music that is exciting, influential, revolutionary, and most importantly fun, both to watch and to perform! Ruth: I grew up in the middle of all these styles of pop music and continually gravitated to the songwriters who created wonderful melodies. There are so many genres of 60fs music – PopDance-Drug-Protest-Love, and writers had creative influences everywhere, both positive and negative – they fed off each other. Paul McCartney has always stated that Pet Sounds influenced him in making the great album, Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. CCftA: What is your favorite song from that era? Why? Anthony: It’s really tough to choose. I have performed “In My Life” by The Beatles a few times at family events with my cousin playing guitar, so that song will always have a lot of meaning for
74
me. But there are so many other songs from this decade that are among my favorites! Ruth: That is a crazy hard question. It was only a short span of a decade, but so so many songs that were great songs! I loved The Beatles, so “In My Life” is a favorite, but I cannot name just one as there are way, way too many. CCftA: The 60s was a decade of tremendous social change and upheaval – will there be any anthems/protest songs mixed in with the pop hits? Anthony: Absolutely, we could not have a show about 60s music without reflecting on those events and songs. It’s part of what makes the music of this decade so powerful and enduring. Ruth: Oh, yes! You couldn’t have a tribute to the 60s without a song about loss or hope. CCftA: Tell us about the cast. Anthony: We have an amazingly diverse group of singers in this cast, coming from many different
musical backgrounds. A great strength of this show is the unique sound of each singer, which is essential in a show that covers so much ground in terms of genres and styles. I think people are going to be blown away by these performers! Ruth: We have a very talented and diverse cast. We have four men and three women. They are Jordan Renzi, Siobhan Magnus, Alex Valentine, Anthony Teixeira, Martha Paquin, Michael Ernst, and James Davis. CCftA: There are SO many songs from that decade – how did you choose the set? Anthony: The songs were decided by committee. We consulted lists of top songs of the decade, of course, but most songs were chosen because of people’s personal affinity for them. The hard part was whittling the song list down – we probably had enough songs to produce two shows! Ruth: It was extremely hard. We certainly cannot cover all the great songs of that decade. What I am hoping for is to cover some of the experiences and the emotions that were felt by the
generations who lived through this tumultuous and in some ways uplifting period – we’ll bring the audience down memory lane. CCftA: Were you guys even around in the 60s? Discuss. Anthony: Not even close! However, I grew up with a love and appreciation for many of these songs, so even though I wasn’t around to experience them firsthand, hearing them still gives me a sense of happiness and nostalgia. Ruth: Hah – yes, I grew up in the sixties! I was surrounded by music! My mother was a classical pianist and singer and I had three older sisters, so the music in my house was all over the map. Dylan, CSN, Opera, The Who, Dionne Warwick, pop, rock and roll, folk – everything – I heard it all, absorbed it all. Such an exciting, rich time. And it will be an exciting, rich show – book your tickets now – The Beat Goes On: Music of the 60s will be a smash! The show opens Tuesday, February 10. Get your tickets now!

an interview with Dr. Waldo Fielding by David Kuehn Recently I sat down with Dr. Waldo Fielding in his East Falmouth home to talk about the play Love Letters. I was greeted with the news of his recent marriage to Anita MacKinnon, and I wish them both many more happy years together! Dr. Fielding, or Waldo, as he is affectionately known at the Center, will perform A. R. Gurney’s Love Letters with Pam McArdle on Sunday, March 29, as a benefit for the Center. Here are some of the highlights of our conversation: DK: Tell me about the first time you performed Love Letters. WF: I was still married to Sue Bennett who was a featured singer on the Lucky Strike Hit Parade TV Show. We did it twice together. We were living in Newton when we first did Love Letters. Later I did the play twice with Betsy Palmer, remember that name? DK: Oh, yes. How did you come to work with Betsy?
WF: She was married to one of my bosses when I was a resident at Harlem Hospital. The marriage didn’t last but she and I became very friendly and we remain that way. She is a great talent. DK: How many plays have you done? SF: Seventy one, starting in 1985 in The Man Who Came to Dinner. I played Willy Loman twice in Death of a Salesman. DK: Is that your favorite role? SF: No, my favorite play is one you’ve never heard of – a two person play, a very emotional play called Visiting Mr. Green. It’s beautiful and I wish I could do it again. DK: Remember when you donated the play library to the Center? I believe it was then that you mentioned you might

78
be interested in a performance at Cotuit – that’s when you introduced me to Pam McArdle. WF: Yes, I’ve done it eight times with Pam. There are only three people I’ve ever performed this piece with: my wife Susie, Betsy Palmer, and Pam. DK: What is it about the play that keeps drawing you back to it? WF: I can’t say enough about it. Two people sitting next to each other, never looking at one another, carrying on long conversations, finally getting into the relationship as adults. She is a very dissolute character and he’s obviously straight-laced as can be. When I hear the audience at the end, I know I want to do it again. The emotional impact is enormous and I try to keep myself from crying – and I’m not kidding – I actually do have to cry.
79
DK: It really means a lot to me that this has become a tradition. You touch the audiences, and it’s also important to me that people know how generous you are, because the money we raise during these performances is all donated to the Center. WF: Don’t say that! I’m the one who is grateful! DK: When you do the show in March this year, what do you hope the audience gets out of it? WF: The emotional impact. I want the audience to be moved. DK: Well, I have no doubt that will happen! Thanks, Waldo, for all you do in support of the Center.

Are you ready for a little “church” Cotuit style? Then get your gospel bluesy roots over to the Center for two early afternoon concerts that will have your feet tapping all day. Ruth Condon spoke with folks from Southern Rail (January 18 concert) and the Berklee Gospel Choir (March 15 concert) to tell us a little about these exciting upcoming shows... Our upcoming Gospel Brunches will host guest musicians “Southern Rail” on Sunday, January 18th, and The Berklee Gospel Choir on Sunday, March 15th. I had the opportunity recently to speak to the founding husband and wife team behind “Southern Rail,” musicians Sharon Horovitch and Jim Muller, along with Bryson Campson, the Student Director of the Berklee Gospel Choir at Berklee College of Music. All three proclaimed that they want their music to be comforting, fun, and welcoming, and that their audience should leave the performance uplifted and
82
happy. They believe that gospel music should be inclusive and welcoming, and that the power of the music itself is awesome and inspiring. “Southern Rail” was created in the mid-seventies by Sharon and Jim, and although the members have changed over the years, the love of creating and performing their music has kept them together. “Each new member brings a new skill-set, a new vision, and the opportunity for personal growth,” states Sharon. Their goal has always been to please the audience and avoid songs that preach one religion.
Bryson, the Student Director of the Berklee Gospel Choir, is in his senior year at Berklee and hails from Texas where gospel music was part of his daily life. He states, “my family made up half the church, and I have always been a faithbased person.” Upon arriving at Berklee his freshman year, he auditioned for the choir and became the Student Director in his sophomore year. I asked Bryson what it is about gospel music that attracts such a diverse group of choir members at Berklee. He says, “I believe gospel music has power – it evokes a lot of emotion which attracts students.” Bryson also believes the students are curious about the history of the music, especially the students from countries where religious choice is not an option.
Bryson and the Berklee Gospel Choir will feature 20 choir members backed by musicians on piano, bass, guitar, and drums. They all agree that gospel music resonates with their audiences and believe there is no better way to bring the community together with food and music on a cold winter day.
SUNDAY GOSPEL BRUNCH Southern Rail Sunday, January 18 at 12:00pm Berklee Music Choir Sunday, March 15 at 12:00pm Before the concert our volunteer music committee members and friends will be organizing a pot-luck. If you’d like to share some gospel chow, come to the gallery at 11:00am and bring something inspired by the theme of the day. Our cash bar will be open, so enjoy a bloody Mary or your favorite nonalcoholic beverage. Think of it as our church social – come early and enjoy everyone’s company and offerings.
Jim and Sharon will lead “Southern Rail” with Sharon Horovitch on bass and harmony vocals, Jim Muller on guitar and lead vocals, Richard Stillman on banjo and harmony vocals, and John Roc on mandolin and harmony vocals.

Who is your favorite fictional hero? Tom Sawyer. Who doesn’t love a rascal with a conscience?
What is your most treasured possession? My undergraduate diploma from Saint Anselm College. When and where were you happiest? Gliding along Cotuit Bay on a late August afternoon in our tiny Carolina Skiff. What is your most obvious characteristic? I’m relentlessly, annoyingly, positive. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Skipping in my head to the end of someone’s sentence when they’ve just begun speaking.
What is the quality you most admire in a man? Strength of character. What is the quality you most admire in a woman? Strength of character. What is it you most dislike? Salesmanship.
Which living person do you most admire? My parents. (Please don’t tell them.)
Who are your real-life heroes? Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Rosa Parks and Major Richard D. Winters.
Where would you like to live? My next move is to a pine box in the back yard.
What do you value most in your friends? Their willingness to accept me, warts and all. Happiness is sitting in beach chair surrounded by a circle of friends. How would you like to die? Guns blazing. If you were to die and come back as a person or an animal, what do you think it would be? This is a scary question because I can only imagine what karma my soul has accumulated over the years. If you could choose an object to come back as, what would you choose? An iPhone 6 (not 6 Plus; that’s just silly). What is your motto, the words you live by or that mean a lot to you? Be the kind of leader that you would follow.

Member Spotlight Myrna Mitchell
Does this gal look familiar? If so, it might be because she’s at the Center so often. In 2013 Myrna was our Number One patron, frequenting CCftA more often than anyone else! While the numbers for 2014 are not tallied yet, we know she’s up to 20 shows and events for the year so far – she just might be our top attendee for two years in a row. We all know Myrna and so we thought you might like to get to know her, too. Myrna grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. She moved to Boston after college where she met and married Phil Mitchell. They raised three boys together in the town of Walpole, MA. When the kids were very young, Myrna decided to try her hand at acting. As a trained pianist, Myrna gravitated to musicals, acting in

Kurt Weill’s One Touch of Venus at The Walpole Footlighters. After that she was hooked, performing three Doris Day plays and Neil Simon’s first play, Come Blow Your Horn, as well as numerous other productions. The Walpole Footlighters still puts on productions, but Myrna now lives on the Cape for most of the year, venturing north to her house in Maine in the summertime. It is there that her children and eight grandchildren come to visit and enjoy time spent together. One of Myrna’s grandchildren, Chris, is a musician, playing keyboards and guitar. Myrna loves when her family comes to visit because the music and song brings family and neighbors together around the fire to tell stories and sit awhile. Myrna discovered Cotuit when she bought tickets to see Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. According to Myrna “The show was wonderful. I loved it so much that I came back the next day and joined the Center. I’ve been here ever since.” She goes on to say, “My friends all know where I am when they need to reach me. Cotuit is my thing. I like everything about it: the fine art in the gallery, the plays, the music.” But the people are what she loves best about the Center. So, the next time you run into Myrna make sure you remind her that we love her too!

Board Member Spotlight CE: How long have you been married and how many kids? GS: 21 years, Derek, Hailey, and Margo make 3. As I write this, Hailey, 16, is helping with the costumes for Annie at the Center. CE: You own a popular restaurant, Siena, at Mashpee Commons — how did you end up in the business? GS: I had worked in the corporate world and wanted out, but I did like managing. In a restaurant, there is no shortage of things to manage. It’s more satisfying to own a local business. Also, I had traveled a lot and certainly had some opinions about food and hospitality.
Graham Silliman CE: How long have you served on the Board? GS: I think about 6 years. The time sneaks up on you! CE: Why did you join? GS: We have had a family membership because we attend shows, and my kids take classes and volunteer. Then once I ran into some volunteers from the Center, and I did a bit of a soliloquy about the arts on the Cape — basically that, for all its faults, it was impressive that the Center was able to rebuild after the fire in 2000. Shortly thereafter, I got a call about volunteering on the board... CE: Where’d you grow up and how and where did you end up on the Cape? GS: I grew up in Fredonia, NY, but I had spent a few summers here, and my wife, Leslie, grew up here. No disrespect meant for upstate New York, but if you had a choice, where would you go?
Interview by Christine Ernst
CE: What do you do for fun? GS: Well, most of the time work and family are actually pretty fun — beyond that I’ll do anything that New England is known for – we have an armada of small boats from kayaks to a daysailer, and we like the White Mountains in the winter. CE: What do you love about the Center? GS: I grew up in a college town. There’s nothing like that on the Cape, but the Center brings that same vibe to the area — there are always interesting things going on here. CE: How about what you love about being on the Board? GS: Love? A board meeting has to be the least artistic activity happening at the Center! But I happily contribute because I think it is important to make sure the Center delivers on its promises to everyone here — people who go to a show, cast members who commit to weeks of rehearsals, class participants, artists who put their work on the walls. The Center is a good member of our community. CE: And a nifty fact about yourself: GS: Well, I can’t dance, and I’m not much of a painter or sculptor, but I will say that the restaurant is a theatrical place — that is my creative outlet.

Volunteer Spotlight William and Lucy Cromwell When they are not volunteering at Cotuit Center for the Arts as ushers, at the member service table, or back in the administration office, Lucy and William Cromwell can often be found in the audience on opening night, dressed to the nines. The Cromwells have a long history of volunteering for various organizations around the world, and when they moved to Mashpee full-time 20 years ago, they continued to offer their talents to organizations on Cape Cod. “My earliest volunteering was with my Girl Scout Troop in Boston,” says Lucy. “Many years later in London, I volunteered with my local Rotary Club serving Christmas dinner to elders who would otherwise be alone. I was also Neighborhood Watch Coordinator in my village, Battersea.” In the mid 1980’s Lucy did extensive volunteer work with HIV and AIDS patients. She worked in HIV and AIDS wards in London Hospitals, and at an Outpatient AIDS Clinic in Baltimore. Lucy’s volunteer resume also includes the Theatre Benefit Committee and the James Weldon Johnson Community Center

in New York, and the Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse. She also serves as a Board Member for the Alzheimer Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, the Mashpee Community Concert Committee, and sits on CCftA’s Membership Committee. William has been a committed volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary and in December will celebrate his 15th year with this incredible organization. He began as a member of the Flotilla and over the years was elected to various offices. His most recent position was District Captain. William describes himself as Cotuit Center for the Arts’ “non-volunteer volunteer,” pitching in to do whatever is needed at the time, including filling in for an usher who had to go home sick, or carrying extra chairs into the theatre. He always puts on his ‘Ambassador’ hat and moves around the gallery with a mission to make sure patrons meet and mingle so they won’t ever have to feel like strangers. “It is a perfect marriage in that we feel like we are part of a family and participating in the cultural landscape of our community. As both of us have woven volunteering into our lives, after seven years as caregivers for family members we were SPENT. It was time to reflect on our lives taking care of people. Once we experienced the joy and fun that emanates from the Center, we saw it as an opportunity to be involved and caring for people in a different way with art, music, and education in an exciting, lively atmosphere and exposing us to a wonderful new world.”
