LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OK. So here’s a trick question. What do all of the following people and businesses have in common?
A Concrete Answer Blueboard Specialists Plastering Botello Lumber Company Cape Cod Insulation Cazeault Roofing & Solar Chris Barger Masonry Cor-Metals, Inc. Cotuit Bay Design Cotuit Landscaping Elite Wood Flooring Griffin Plasterers Ideal Floor Covering International Upright Services JD Custom Building
L & M Glass Lagadinos Building & Design Macomber’s Sanitary Refuse Malfy Alarm, Inc. Nauset Disposal Peacock Painting Panda Painting Randall C. Agnew Electrical RJ Franey Mechanical Services Rogers & Marney Spencer Hallett Plumbing & Heating Stewart Painting Transition Engineering
The answer? Yes. You should call them when you have building needs. OK. So it wasn’t that tricky. Please thank them for their terrific donated work on the Annex/Black Box. Please use their products and services. They earned it. We truly appreciate their support of the Center, and of course want to support them and their businesses. Thank you to all of these businesses and individuals that donated their professional time and effort. While I am thanking people, I want to especially reach out to Spencer Hallett and Gary Souza and thank them for their extraordinary leadership, expertise and effort in making the renovation happen. They defined what we mean when we say DO IT in Cotuit! Sincerely, Jim Hoeck President, Cotuit Center for the Arts
GREETINGS!
People used to say to me “why does she do it?” I always thought the better question was “Why DID I?” The line I delivered via my recent portrayal of Cosmé McMoon during our March run of “Souvenir” has stuck with me. Why did this woman, Florence Foster Jenkins, who was clearly tone deaf, keep reaching for the ultimate brass ring: a concert at Carnegie Hall? Why did I, with everything else on my plate, agree to take on this challenge and act in my first play, here at the Center where I serve as executive director? Why does anyone go through the angst of preparation, rehearsals, and then the nerves, the nerves, the nerves. The self-doubt. The nausea. The panic. The exhaustion. Is it because, when it’s all said and done and the work is presented to an audience they are moved? They say “well done!”? They
bring flowers? They write wonderful things on Facebook? I can only speak for myself when I say yes, that’s part of it. But there is also the thing that is harder to express. I have a whole new and deeper appreciation for everyone who contributes to the art we present here. The first sentence of our mission statement is so absolutely true: THE ARTS ARE ESSENTIAL. No matter what the motivation for each painter, poet, singer, designer, actor, staffer, volunteer – one thing binds us together – a deep and unwavering belief that the arts are necessary. They are not nice; they are necessary. They are fundamental to a meaningful society. We have a very important role to play in our world and we take it seriously. For me that’s the answer to why. It’s a no brainer. And once in a while we have an opportunity to stretch ourselves
further. Step outside our comfort zone. I hope everyone reading this will take on a new artistic challenge. Participate in a new and different way. And continue to deepen your bond with us. We are your family. Let’s enrich one another’s souls. We’re going to need it in the months ahead! And to circle back to the beginning of my letter, if you would like to see that
opening quote in context, Jo Brisbane and I will be taking Cotuit on the Road as we present our production of “Souvenir” at the Provincetown Theatre the first two weekends of August. Oh yeah, and blah, blah, blah. David Kuehn Executive Director

by Stephen Temperley March 8-20
A black comedy about white trash! The story starts when Peggy, a good Christian woman, hits her head on the sink and bleeds to death after tripping over her lover’s wooden legs in a motel room. It leads to chaos erupting in Winter, Texas! You won’t want to miss this campy, outrageous show. Directed by Ian Ryan.
The bizarre career of Florence Foster Jenkins — a socialite who fancied herself an opera singer and, through an awfulness that curdled into a kind of cult, achieved dubious fame from 1932 to her sold-out Carnegie Hall swan song in 1944 — is viewed in flashback, replete with accompaniment by her equally mundane pianist. Featuring Jo Brisbane and our very own David Kuehn, as Cosme. Directed by Mary Arnault.

Wonderland
music by Richard Rodgers, book & lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II July 7-31
by Holly Erin McCarthy, adapted from the book by Lewis Carroll August 8-19
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. This colorful story features the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys of turn-of-thecentury O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A! You’ll be humming the tunes long after the show is over.
Off with her head! A 21st century girl is magically transported to Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland in this play with music. Join us for another wild, original production from Theater Under the Stairs this summer. A family show that parents can enjoy as much as the kids will.

Theater Spotlight
The high-spirited rivalry between cowboys and farmers in early-1900s western territory provides a colorful background for love between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl. Add in farmer Andrew Carnes’ impatience to marry off daughter Ado Annie (the girl who cain’t say no) with the reluctant peddler Ali Hakim, a determined but naïve suitor Will Parker, the reclusive and menacing farmhand Jud Fry, a country-fresh mix of pioneer-spirit early Americana, and the most popular score ever written by Rogers and Hammerstein, and you have one of the most heralded and time-honored musicals of all time. Oklahoma! comes to the CCftA stage in July – at last! Executive Director David Kuehn and producer Christine Ernst have long lobbied to bring this 1943 musical to the mainstage, which some (not naming names here) have dismissed as an old chestnut, the quintessential Amateur Theatricale, the Musical of Last Resort – pure corn (no pun intended). But David and Christine had faith – they persisted and co-hosted
the Oklahoma! Singlalong in 2015 – a hugely popular event that convinced them that the project would be a home run. There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow, folks – chicks and ducks and geese better scurry – this sparkling gem of show hits the stage on July 7! Michele Colley (Spamalot, Pirates of Penzance) directs and choreographs, and newcomer to the Center, Nhung Truong, is Musical Director. Designer Michael Ernst and Lighting Magician Greg Hamm will take you to Oklahoma Territory in 1906 and immerse you in a cornfield. Huge cast, beautiful dance, gorgeous costumes, and you already know all the songs. Don’t miss CCftA’s exuberant spin on the most classic of the classics – Ooooooooooklahoma this summer – oh, what a beautiful mornin’, indeed.

Music/Special Event Spotlight
Attention Members and Donors – a special event just for you! Save the date! Mark your calendars! Alert the media! Begin your happy dance! Cotuit Center for the Arts’ annual Member & Donor Summer Social will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2016, 2:00pm to 5:00pm. It’s hard to believe that in just three years I’ve seen our membership grow from 754 to 1,330 members, a 77% increase! And many of you are also donors, for which we are extra grateful. Well, I take back that “hard to believe” part. By now you know that Cotuit Center for the Arts isn’t so secret anymore, to say the least, which in large part is because of you, the heart of our Welcoming Hub! Please join us for our annual Summer Social – food, music, and activities for the whole family! We love to celebrate our members and donors, and recognize and thank you for being part of our family! We can’t do it at Cotuit without you.

Surprise entertainment tidbit to round out the day’s festivities? All of the above? Says Executive Director, David Kuehn: “The Summer Social has quickly become one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a great opportunity to say thank you to our members and donors and to feature elements of everything we do here – performance, education, visual art and so on. It’s become our version of a summer family reunion.” Please plan on joining us and see what the hubbub is all about! Don’t stay at home and pooh-pooh it! Do it. At Cotuit! Watch for an e-mail invitation as we approach the date.

Education Education SpotlightSpotlight A Total Performance Approach for Youth on Stage Kids, come down to The Center and sing! One of the new offerings at Cotuit’s Art School this spring is a class called Rising Star Singers Show Choir. Under the direction of Norma Atwood, students ranging in age from 8 to 16 learn to develop and coordinate the full range of their performance skills, including, voice, dance, and stage presence. As part of a performance choir, they are then able to apply these skills to musical theater performances going forward, beginning with a performance this July at Entertainment Tonight (ET). The concept of Performance Choir has been a hallmark of Norma Atwood’s career over her many years as both a performer and a teacher. When she was only eight years old, she was accepted into the New England Conservatory of Music’s special Youth Program for Voice training, an activity she continued throughout her high school years. It was there she first saw that the strict limitations placed on voice students did not allow them to expand their skills beyond voice to a full performance level. After completing degrees in Theatre Arts and Music from Northeastern, and graduate work in Music Education from Akron University and U. of Alabama, Norma not only became a stage performer herself but also began to develop education programs to help students develop into “triple threat” performers of voice, dance, and acting. Her classes began in Michigan, focusing on younger kids, who were most receptive to learning this approach. Through a combination of classroom study and actual appearances at a number of different venues, these students developed into outstanding performers. In 2000, the group was invited to perform at Lincoln Center in New York. In addition, several individuals have made their way
onto Broadway, including roles in major productions like Chicago. One student from the Michigan class, Iain Young, is currently appearing in the national touring company of Newsies. When Norma’s family moved to New England, she sought out opportunities to participate in the wealth of the Cape-based arts. Beginning with roles at the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans and Eventide Arts in Dennis, Norma eventually called upon her teaching skills to become the Performance Director for Cape Cod CAN (Collaborative Arts Network), working with the special needs community. With that organization’s outstanding performance of Scary Gary at Cotuit last year, CCftA had the very good fortune of having Norma become a part of the team. She has since served as Music Director for Annie, Pirates of Penzance, and The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever. Most important, Norma Atwood has brought her outstanding and successful performance choir approach to the Cotuit Art School for local youth to experience. This new class represents another expansion of our Art School offerings to a wider population here on the Cape. It also gives these students the tools to participate in many more theater productions here at Cotuit as well as at other venues. We will look forward to the initial results at the ET Gala in July and hope that someday soon CCftA may even have alumni appearing on Broadway!

VISIONS
Carol White Odell, Tom Odell, and John Howell White
“Painting for me is an adventure,” said Carol White Odell. “I work improvisationally, starting with a germ of an idea, a tiny sketch, and may veer far from it, working out the color and detail as I go along.” John Howell White is interested in painting as a contemplative practice. “Hopefully,” he said, “these images provide viewers a space to fall into and, after that descent, to return to their reconsidered lives.” Sculptor Tom Odell gains satisfaction from improvisation, conceiving and making things. “You make something to learn something. You make the thing that will teach you what you want to learn,” he said. These three artists are on view together in the Gallery from June 4 to July 17, in the exhibit Related Visions – a title that refers not only to their work, but to their relationships: Carol and Tom are husband and wife, and John is Carol’s brother. John is a colorist who creates pattern-oriented nonrepresentational art in oils, acrylics, watercolor, and other media. He chairs the art education department at Kutztown University and is the author of Experience Painting.
John has summered on the Cape for many years. Carol and Tom, who have been married for over 40 years, met at an art exhibition. In 1975, they opened the Odell Studio Gallery in Chatham. “We both like to create problems in our work and then resolve them,” said Carol. Carol’s oil paintings create a “certain harmony of disparate elements.” She often uses horizontal lines in her paintings, which the eye instinctively reads as landscape. For Carol, though, the horizontal line “keeps us even, keeps us still” amid the chaos of the painting, and of life. Tom’s metal sculptures are calm and soothing. He selects metals for their intrinsic colors and combines them, using color, texture, and form to express harmony, rhythm, and dynamic balance. Though each has a distinctive vision, they do have much in common – all are dedicated to non-objective art – art that is totally invented, not related to anything from the natural world. All view art as a contemplative, meditative process, both for the artist and for the viewer. – article by Marilyn Rowland

Introducing… The Art School! [APPLAUSE]
Educate, Entertain, Illuminate, Inspire. These are the first four words in Cotuit Center for the Arts’ mission statement. As the Director of Education, I take the word “Educate” to heart, and it’s my responsibility to ensure that we fulfill this essential part of our mission. With that in mind, we have created a new arts education program at CCftA called The Art School. Perhaps you noticed our new flyer. The flyer itself, a more clean and simplified version of the old “class flyer,” is demonstrative of the overarching concept behind The Art School: quality versus quantity. In other words, rather than offering 38 classes in the Fall Term, we may offer only 15 classes -- but 15 classes that have clear student objectives met by professional artists and teachers, as well as higher enrollment and curriculum standards. This is not to say that we haven’t offered these types of courses in the past. However, we are now more mindful of our education objectives and are working towards meeting them on a

regular basis. Arts education is on our radar now more than ever. The mission of The Art School at Cotuit Center for the Arts is to develop artistic talents and to impart skills to students that they will take away from each class -- each class. From the outset, students will learn what they will emerge with, other than perhaps a completed painting for the dining room wall. They should leave class with a new skillset and a window into greater understanding of the craft. For example, in Winter Pastels with Ed Chesnovitch, students learn how to make thumbnail sketches and notans in the first class, just two steps on the way to a finished Pastel. And, in Sam Holmstock’s drumming class, students learn to find a percussion groove so that they can accompany other instruments in a performance. The faculty will emphasize these particular student objectives, i.e., “Students will be able to experiment with color theory,” and refrain from employing
teacher objectives, i.e., “I will teach students to paint with Oils.”

The Art School aims to provide As quality arts education is the focus a safe and social place for students of The Art School, we have invited only to experiment and find an artistic 16 artists to be part of our Core Faculty. home. We welcome you to take a class, These artists are working professionals, explore your creativity, and to meet who have acquired a student following other artists. The Songs of Karen Carpenter We recently sat down and had a chat with Ruth Condon, founder of Brave Horse Music Productions. She is bringing the music of Karen Carpenter to the Center June 9-19. CCftA: Your recent productions have been more rock ‘n roll – this is a mellow departure! How did you come to choose the music of the sibling duo Richard and Karen Carpenter for the next Brave Horse production?
RC: Richard Carpenter was an extremely talented composer in his own right. His compositions are filled with great melodies, not so far from my favorite other writer, Burt Bacharach. They are similar musicians in some ways: classically trained, both wrote with a partner and both wrote great arrangements using full orchestras. Richard collaborated with musician and lyricist John Bettis. They only wrote 38 songs together, not a huge catalogue, Article by Christine Rathbun Ernst

but some wonderful melodic hit songs like “I Need to Be in Love,” “I’ll Say Goodbye To Love,” “Yesterday Once More,” and “Only Yesterday,” but also wonderful songs that were not hits like “Eve” or “I Have You” or the country song “Those Good Old Dreams.” CCftA: Were you personally inspired by the music of the Carpenters in the 70’s? RC: Yes, I started singing professionally with my high school music teacher at 16 in 1973, and Karen’s songs were very popular at the time. We performed at many many weddings and they always requested “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Her songs were in my

vocal range and I loved the smooth richness of her voice and the gorgeous melodies of the songs she sang. It wasn’t cool, but I worked with two talented young musicians who loved to work with those harmonies.
CCftA: What do you hope audiences will take away from the show?
CCftA: How is her music still relevant today?
RC: I hope people gain an appreciation for her story, her life, her music and her amazing and rare talent – she was an iconic singer with such a unique sound, and her music is still great today. I hope everyone enjoys this special show!
RC: So many of her songs are written about looking for love or finding our way in this world – and we know how she struggled to find her way. She wrote and sang from her heart, and that authenticity is timeless. The music is still relevant today. CCftA: Which songs/albums will you feature in the show? RC: I am using songs from all eleven albums produced in her lifetime, as well as several albums that were released posthumously. Ten of the Carpenters’ singles went on to become million-sellers, and by 2005, combined worldwide sales of albums and singles well exceeded 100 million units. There was so much good material to choose from!
NOW: The Songs of Karen Carpenter June 9-19 Thurs-Sat at 7:30pm Sun at 4:00pm Get your tickets at ArtsOnTheCape.org today!
CCftA: Who’s in it? RC: The show features Jordan Renzi, Anthony Teixeira, Kristin Fehlau, talented newcomer Brooke Spiegel – and me! It’s a great group, and we perform really well together. CCftA: Tell us about the band. RC: The marvelous Malcolm Granger is our Musical Director

Tripping the Light Fantastic: Excellence in Photography The Center will present the first international juried photography exhibition this summer running from July 23 through August 28. Cape Cod resident and worldrenowned photographer Rowland Scherman has agreed to jury the exhibition. Thirty works will be chosen to hang in the gallery and all other entries will be shown via a digital loop running as part of the exhibition. Cash prizes will be awarded in three categories and the deadline for entry submission is (or was, depending when you are reading this) June 1. Rowland Scherman was the first photographer for the Peace Corps in 1961, documenting the work of volunteers all over the world. His photos helped define the image of the agency we know today. He became a freelance photographer in 1963. His photographs appeared in Life, Look, National Geographic, Time, Paris Match, and Playboy, among many others. He photographed many of the iconic musical, cultural, and political events of the 60’s including the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, the March on Washington, DC, the Beatles first US concert, and Woodstock. David Kuehn recently sat down with Mr. Scherman to get his thoughts on this exhibition. DK: What do you particularly like about the overall theme, and what was it I said to convince you to come on board as the juror? RS: We were parsing the different logos that included the word “light” (which is photography’s first name). The “Light Fantastic” segued into “Tripping the Light Fantastic” which became what it is today: “TRIPPING THE LIGHT”. It has all sorts of connotations, which point to all sorts of submission types – just what we wanted. I was honored to be picked as the jury guy for this show. I love looking at images, and have seen literally millions of them.
Article by David Kuehn

DK: What advice would you give someone choosing an image to submit for consideration? RS: Send what YOU like. I have tried to guess what other juries wanted to see, and that doesn’t work. Once I sent in an avant garde image to a show, and the jury was traditionalist. Next show I sent traditional stuff, and the jury was all about pushing the media to new places (avant garde)! The best advice I can give is to show what you feel is your best work, and hope that the world sees the shine in your vision. DK: What is your current favorite device for taking pictures?
RS: Not so long ago, I was about 50/50 analog to digital media. That has changed to about 95% digital now. I have more cameras than I know about. A lot of them – great cameras – are under my bed, and rarely used. My “go to” camera these days is a Sony a6000. I hear they’re making a newer, better one. That happens all the time! The classic line to remember is: “the best camera is the one you have with you.” DK: The sub-categories for the show are Person. Place. Thing. Are there different elements to these categories that you’ll be looking for, or is the thing that draws you to an image the same, regardless of the category?
has become an icon of the 60’s, but I like some of my other black and white portraits better. A lot of my stuff has gained notoriety over the years because the events I covered are now historic. One of my very first images remains a favorite, and last week I did a portrait of Siobhan Magnus I like a lot. That’s why it’s a tough question. I have considered myself a portraitist these last years, and yet I’ve traveled quite a bit also, and made some pretty good landscapes too. DK: Why should people enter this contest? RS: Those artists who use photography as their medium LOVE to show the way they see the world and their feelings about it in their work. It’s really what art is all about. An assembling of a body of great photographic work allows the shooter as well as the viewer a rare and enriching experience. It should be fun, also.
RS: You’ve answered your own question. DK: You’ve had a remarkable career and we are so honored to have you on deck for this exhibition. Can you tell me what are the three most important pictures you’ve taken and why?
DK: Any other final thoughts? RS: A lot of terrific photography in a great space such as Cotuit Center for the Arts really points the way to a fabulous exhibition – one which, I’m sure, will have a positive impact for those who submit images and for the many lucky visitors to the Center who come to see it. Thanks for including me.
RS: Thank you. It’s a great honor for me as well. But that question is a tough one, as my photographic career started in 1957, in the LIFE magazine darkrooms, and even before that. My most celebrated image, Bob Dylan in Concert,

TO GIVE
ANONYMOUSLY
OR PUBLICLY? When we think about giving, media stories detailing one person’s generosity towards another often come to mind. Think of the diamond ring in the Salvation Army kettle, or the family of six that has their meal paid for by a stranger in a restaurant. These uplifting anecdotes make us believe in the power of the human spirit – they remind us that it feels good to do something for someone else. Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, recently conducted a formal study in giving. Along with his colleagues, Norton asked 632 Americans to reveal their level of income and what they spent their money on, and along with that they were asked to rate their own happiness. What North and his colleagues found was that those who spent money on others were decidedly happier than those who spent more on themselves. They concluded that people who give their money away are actually “wealthier” than those who hold on to it.

Science has another spin on the story, claiming that humans are an inherently social species and have survived and thrived because we take care of one another. The theory goes on to suggest that generosity is a survival instinct – sharing food or shelter with another person has allowed us to prolong the survival of the human community. Or if you prefer your science less on the evolutionary scale and more on a biological one, consider Jorge Moll’s 2006 study at the National Institutes of Health which found that when people give to charities, it activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust, creating a “warm glow” effect. Scientists say that altruistic behavior releases endorphins in the brain, producing the positive feeling known as the “helper’s high.” Regardless of what inspires us to give, the most heart warming part of the story often becomes finding out that the generous individual did their
“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchill giving anonymously. We love hearing of the waitress who gets a thousand dollar tip or the man in the toll booth line who gets his toll paid for by the car in front of him. Anonymous donors sometimes become the most famous stories in philanthropy. Take the story of Chuck Feeney who some say might be the most well-known anonymous donor in history. Since 1982 Feeney has given away billions, Feeney is known for his unassuming lifestyle. He owns no cars or homes, flies economy class and wears a $15 watch. After he made a fortune in the duty-free business he decided to give it all away, stating that he wasn’t comfortable with his wealth and wanted to inspire others with his generosity. At first he did so anonymously so that others in his modest community wouldn’t know the extent of his capacity but somewhere along the way his thinking changed and he decided that silence does not promote change.
Philosophers like Pete Singer agree, stating that those who make it known that they give to charity increase the likelihood that others will do the same. Around Cotuit Center of the Arts we have anonymous donors, too. These selfless people give their money, time, and lots of other wonderful things to our community – meals for an entire cast after a show, flowers for backstage, hundreds of tickets for underprivileged folks to attend live theatre. These thoughtful people give their resources but don’t require acknowledgement, something we struggle with because we so earnestly want to say Thank You. Whether you choose to donate openly or anonymously consider this: Perhaps the reason it feels so good to give is that we know, deep down, that even an individual can change the world. All it takes is one small act of kindness.

Linda Scott and Ken Alsman
after some time to design one of her favorite projects – a restaurant called Hog Heaven, in San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury. Shortly thereafter she opened her own interior design firm and continued to design restaurants and commercial projects, later shifting primarily to high-end residential architecture and interior design. After 30 years in business, Linda closed her Burlingame, CA office in 2013 in preparation for the move to Cotuit. She continues to work with clients from her home.
You have probably seen these two friendly people around the Campus. Linda Scott and Ken Alsman are two of the Center’s more engaged folks, in fact playing a variety of roles – Center Circle members, donors, patrons, Sunday yoga participants, volunteers, and students. They approach everything they do with a breezy smile and a “let’s do it” attitude. Both originally from New Jersey, they met in the San Francisco Bay Area where they lived for over 35 years, making Cotuit their permanent address just a year ago. Ken left the Army in 1967 and began his 28-year career in city planning and economic development in Mountain View, California, during the explosive growth of Silicon Valley. Ken left public service in 1995 starting a new life as a planning consultant, antique dealer and father of 5-year old twins. Linda arrived in San Francisco in 1974 with a Graphic Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in hand. After securing another degree in Environmental design, she went to work for the architectural firm of Hellmuth, Obata, and Kassembaum, leaving
“We met at a party in Tiburon in 1979,” says Linda. “Ken asked me to look at a commercial building he was restoring with the thought of putting in a restaurant. We’ve been together ever since. Within a year we had restored a house together, had a wild ride running a souvenir business called CC Trax, and by 1985 we took on a 1906 house in Palo Alto that was home to us and our twins for 30 years.” Over the years they would buy, design, and restore several more homes, all while working at their full-time professions. Both also served on the Palo Alto Historic Resources Board and remained active in local civic affairs. It was the development bug that brought Ken and Linda back to the East Coast to look for property in 1990. A Palo Alto City Council member, Liz Kniss (also a Cotuit Center for the Arts patron) told them about Cotuit. They bought the former Little River Turkey Farm property on Old Post Road. Over the years they expanded the vacation cottage into their present full-time home. That house is now their primary residence and Linda’s jewel. As she says, she’s always happiest when she has a project and their home has been a 25-year labor of love. So, the next time you see Ken or Linda around, feel free to strike up a conversation with them about their intriguing backgrounds and what they currently do to stay busy. We are so happy to have them in our Cotuit family.

Board Member Spotlight A Conversation with Gary Souza CCftA: How long have you served on the Board? GS: About 18 months. CCftA: Why did you join? GS: Spencer Hallett asked me if I would be interested, and I thought it would be a great way to be involved in another nonprofit (Habitat for Humanity is a favorite of mine), especially because the Center is in my home village of Santuit. The feeling of being connected to the community and my roots are important to me. CCftA:Where’d you grow up and how and where did you end up on the Cape? GS: I was born and raised on the Cape then spent ten years in Georgia then back to the Cape for twenty years then to South Carolina for five years and back to the Cape for the past seven years. CCftA: College? Military? Checkered past? GS: No Military. Graduated from Berry College in Rome, GA. Checkered past, yes, but you’ll have to wait for my autobiography for details. CCftA: Married? Kids? Pets? Tell us a little about your home life. GS: Married to Tonya for a wonderful 23 years. Two boys – John who works with me at Rogers & Marney as an assistant Project Manager, and Alex who works for Coastal Carolina in the Athletic Department. Our home life on the Cape is simple given our work schedule. We try to spend as much time as we can at our home in South Carolina where we are constantly working outside planting, pruning, and fussing with the landscape and surrounding woodlands. CCftA: You work for Rogers & Marney – how did you end up in the business? GS: I took every drafting class available to
me in high school, which led to an interest designing homes and cabinetry. During my high school summers I was a plumbers helper and became hooked on construction. While in college I was a draftsman working for the Maintenance Department and for an X-ray shielding company. Once I graduated from college, I worked in a lumber yard and for a contractor in Georgia. Then back on the Cape in the early 1980’s I worked at Botello Lumber for a year before landing with Rogers & Marney. Been with R&M since then, except for the five years we lived in South Carolina, where I built our home and worked for Classic Homebuilding in Myrtle Beach. Appears I was destined to be in residential construction. CCftA: What do you do for fun? GS: Spend time with Tonya and our dogs Sweet Pea and Scooby. Exercise, run, ride bikes (and golf if time ever allows). CCftA: What do you love about the Center? GS: I love the enthusiasm of the staff, artists, performers and volunteers—it’s infectious. It’s given me a local, user-friendly way to enjoy the Arts which I had never done previously because I was so wrapped up in work, children, athletics, etc. CCftA: How about what you love about being on the Board? GS: I like being part of a group of people whose interest is to manage and grow an organization that provides very important service to the community. CCftA: And a nifty fact about yourself :) GS: Tough one... and it isn’t necessarily nifty the house that we currently live in on the Cape is the only house that I’ve lived in as an adult (five total) that I didn’t build myself... and it’s driving me crazy. Nifty memory... when in high school I shook hands with and spoke to Jesse Owens of 1936 Olympic fame. Always thought that was neat.

Volunteer Spotlight
Michelle Gain
CCftA: Favorite shows here at CCftA?
CCftA: What is one of your favorite volunteer activities at the Center? MG: I really enjoy making artists, volunteers, members and guests feel welcomed when they come to the Center, so I love helping with the Gallery events. I love preparing for the openings, meeting the artists, and listening to the Artist Talk before the Gallery Opening Reception. I also enjoy planning and helping with group tours for both school groups and adults. Recently, we hosted a group of seniors from Provincetown who came to view the work in the gallery by the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod. Before the tour, we watched a short video on the technique of pastel painting. Then one of the painters walked the gallery with us and after the tour, we tried our hand at working with pastels by drawing an apple. The seniors liked the experience so much, they scheduled their next visit on the spot. CCftA: What do you love about the Center? MG: I love the people I have met, such a diverse group but all connected to the Center in some way. I love the variety of events and activities my husband, David, and I can attend. And I love the many opportunities for my own learning: classes, art exhibits, and shows. Also, as time goes by, I have had the opportunity to see many different works from artists and performers that have become familiar to me. I can recognize an artist’s work in various gallery exhibits or see actors playing various roles. I saw Blake Gronlund in Pirates of Penzance and in a very different role in Sordid Lives. When I saw he was being featured in his own show in March, of course we bought tickets and loved the show.
MG: I could list so many! A few on my mind now: The Last 5 Years – I saw it 4 times! Pirates of Penzance, Eleemosynary, Love is Blind: A Tribute to Amy Winehouse, and the performance of Amit Peled, a cellist. I first knew of him when I saw his portrait in the Center’s gallery show featuring the art of Jon Friedman. When I heard he was performing in our own gallery, I had to attend. I was spellbound! CCftA: What do you like to do when you are not volunteering at the Center? MG: I volunteer with a group of friends who provide meals for the people at a homeless shelter. I also love to cook, spend time with family and friends, take walks, shop, go to productions, travel, kayak, and play the ukulele, which I learned at the Center! CCftA: Your husband, David, also volunteers here at the Center. MG: One of my favorite things about volunteering at the Center is sharing the experience when my husband, David, and I volunteer together. The Center has so many options that even though our interests can be very different at times, when we look on the Volunteer Hub each month, we always find something intriguing. We sign up, help out, and spend the evening together as well. For me, that is the best. CCftA: One of the best things about volunteering at the Center? MG: Although I thoroughly enjoy everything about volunteer experience at Cotuit, if I had to pick the best, I think it would be serving on the Volunteer Advisory Board. I was honored to be asked and I have met a great group of people. Our meetings are always lively and light-hearted but we work hard together to get and keep good volunteers. And that is very satisfying to me.

the songs and characters. It was overall just a fun and crazy time.
HM: I first became involved when I worked as a page turner for Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in 2012. I immediately fell in love with the Center and have worked behind the scenes for four years now.
CCftA: What is a fun fact about you that we

I love music and I play the guitar, ukulele, and piano.
CCftA: Can you give a brief
explanation about what you will be doing as Stage Manager for the Black Box? HM: As Stage Manager I will be basically running all the technical aspects that go into a show while also taking notes, managing the house, and cast.
CCftA: What do you like about
working backstage?
HM: I love having the opportunity to work behind the scenes and put in all the hard work that is unseen. I love having the experience of learning everything else that makes a production a production. CCftA: What has been your favorite
production you have worked on here, and why?
HM: My favorite production would have to be Spamalot! I loved doing spotlight for the show and enjoyed

Spencer Hallett Plumbing & Heating and Rogers & Marney Builders Spencer Hallett and Gary Souza: The Contractor Whisperers Let’s just call them what they are. The Contractor Whisperers. Spencer and Gary called. Contractors came. With sledgehammers and electrical wire and paint brushes. They left dumpsters and hauled them away. For free. They plastered and took out walls and windows and made a porch. They gave of their time and money and crew resources to renovate our beloved Black Box theater building.
working volunteers. They came to demolish walls, remove cabinets, and haul away debris. So the contractors could rebuild.
When I asked Gary Souza, owner of Rogers & Marney, Inc. Builders and board member here at Cotuit Center for the Arts, why so many gave so generously, he had a one-word response: Community. Gary said that he and Spencer Hallett, owner of Spencer Hallett Plumbing & Heating, Inc. and also a Cotuit board member, work to build relationships with integrity. When you are known for fairness and hard work, you build a cadre of like-minded professionals with whom you conduct business. And now, they are all our Black Box Heroes.
Spencer says that he is “committed to the feeling of community that exists here at the Center.” Obviously, many of our neighbors share that feeling of community. Lucky us.
And on March 2, when we invited all the volunteers and contractors back to the spectacular new space, they were in awe at the end result. One young contractor was walking around, looking up, obviously delighted by what he saw.
And let’s not forget the unsung heroes of our loyal and hard-
