Expanded Centre of Care Breast Health centre opened The official opening celebration of the expanded Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre of Care Breast Health Centre was held Friday, October 12 at Saskatoon City Hospital. The expanded centre brings together services for Saskatchewan patients with breast health concerns, including clinic space, complete reconstructive services, and a multi-disciplinary team of care professionals.

“Patients with breast health concerns now have access to all the services, specialists, education and support they need in one place,” says Jim Rhode, Chair of Saskatoon Regional Health Authority. “This expansion is the culmination of a vision to offer a complete centre of care for our breast health patients.”

The Breast Health Centre first opened to patients in 2006, offering diagnostic and assessment services. Since then it has grown to include a

breast MRI and an entire care team of surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, mammography technologists, diagnostic sonographers, medical office assistants, nurses, physiotherapists and more.

The Breast Health Centre expansion has been made possible by the generosity of many individuals, businesses and communities to the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation. The

Foundation raised $4.4 million of capital money in 2006 to establish the Breast Health Centre and has now raised another $1.5 million to complete this expansion. The largest single donation from the initial campaign came from Irene and Leslie Dubé, whose gift of $1 million inspired the naming of the centre. “We are thrilled with the response from donors for this expansion and are es-

pecially grateful to the Merlis Belsher Family who stepped forward to complete the campaign,” says Steve Shannon, CEO of Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation.

Former RM administrator unjustly fired, province finds

n investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) division of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety has ruled that the former administrator of the RM of Corman Park, Tammy Knuttila, was unjustly terminated and has ordered her reinstatement.

The ruling, by Occupational Health Officer Andrea Dunkle, was delivered to the RM of Corman Park office on Wednesday, October 10. In the ruling, Dunkle states the evidence in the case indicated Knuttila was fired in retaliation for filing a complaint of workplace harassment against the Reeve of Corman Park, Mel Henry.

t’s now official. The new school under construction next door to The Legends Centre will be known as the Warman Community Middle School.

At a special ceremony in The Legends Centre in Warman on Monday, October 15, officials with the Prairie Spirit School Division (PSSD), the municipality of Warman, and the provincial government unveiled the name for the school in front of a crowd of enthusiastic middle-years students.

Greg Tebay, principal of the new school, said it will embody a spirit of “connectedness.”

“Building the new school is much more than putting up walls and painting and putting down floor coverings,” he said. “It’s about developing an identity as a community of learners.”

He said “connectedness” is an important idea in the design and vision of this school, noting the word embodies “the partnership between the school and the community; the physical connection between the school and the Legends recreation complex; and it’s also about how we’re connected with technology and the future.

This school is designed to support a Greg Tebay 21st century learning philosophy that promotes creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. Our mission is to create a school where

students are connected to their learning and where students, staff and members of the community feel connected to one another.”

Sam Dyck, trustee for Warman on the PSSD Board of Education, said the new school is a direct result of a partnership agreement signed between the Town of Warman and the school division on January 25, 1994.

That joint-use agreement, he noted, bound the school division and town to work together by sharing facilities for mutual benefit, and also to collaborate on any future capital projects.

“On that day, the community shifted, and the culture became one of cooperation,” he said. “Without that agreement, we would not be where we are today.”

Sheryl Spence, Mayor of Warman, said the announcement of the name brings the school

that much closer to being a reality. Following closely on the heels of the declaration of city status for Warman next week, she said the new school is another cause for celebration.

She noted the Legends Centre will be a hub of student activity during the day and a focus for the community at night, with the facilities jointly shared between the school and the soon-to-be city.

“The future is full of opportunities because we’re willing to work together to make things happen,” she said.

Nancy Heppner, MLA for Martensville, said the provincial government is proud to partner with the community in the building of the school, and noted the new building will greatly ease the overcrowding in Warman’s existing schools.

SAMSON CASE RULING A separate decision by the OHS, released Friday, October 5, ruled that Lynne Samson, a former RM of Corman Park councilor, was unjustly removed from the RM’s Board of Police Commissioners, again because of retaliation for filing a complaint of workplace harassment against the Reeve.

Samson, who lost her seat as a result of being defeated in the recent RM council election, is not seeking any compensation but is nonetheless happy to see that “the truth has now been made public.”

“This is a great day for Corman Park,” said Samson in an interview on Thursday, October 11. “It’s unfortunate that the Reeve went ahead and used taxpayers’ money to engage a lawyer to defend his actions. The ratepayers should not be treated like a piggy bank.”

KNUTTILA RULING In Knuttila’s case, the OHS ruled that the former RM administrator is entitled to back pay and must be reinstated.

“It does feel nice to be vindicated,” said Knuttila in an interview October 10. “It’s been a long time coming, and there’s been a lot of questions raised in the past year. Until now I haven’t spoken publicly about it, although certain representatives of the RM have felt free to speak publicly about certain things. My name has taken a number of hits, so it’s nice to have it on the record that there weren’t grounds for dismissal – that the firing was an arbitrary and unjustified act of revenge.

It’s nice to have that independent, third-party review and investigation confirm the facts.”

Knuttila says she is still studying her options as to whether she will return to her former position with the RM, noting there are still two outstanding lawsuits that she would like resolved first. She filed a wrongful dismissal suit against the RM, as well as a civil lawsuit against Marilyn Mackenzie, an investigator hired by the RM council in 2011 to prepare a report into the allegations. Knuttila’s lawsuit seeks damages from Mackenzie for alleged libel.

RM council weighs alternatives

he RM of Corman Park Council is still weighing its options before responding to the provincial Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) ruling in the case of former administrator Tammy Knuttila.

But the clock is ticking.

According to provincial legislation, the RM council and administration must act within 21 days of receiving the OHS ruling. The ruling was received October 10, which means the council has until October 31 to decide whether to appeal the ruling.

But in the meantime, the RM is looking to begin discussions with Knuttila’s legal counsel over whether the former administrator will be reinstated or whether a possible severance set-

tlement can be reached.

At a special meeting of the RM of Corman Park Council on Monday, October 15, councilors voted to make a decision on the issue next week.

A special meeting of the RM council is scheduled to be held Monday, October 22 specifically to deal with this issue. At that meeting, the RM’s legal counsel will be present.

Council also passed a resolution directing the RM administrator to have the RM’s lawyer begin discussions wtih Knuttila’s legal counsel.

At the October 15 special meeting, RM councilors heard directly from Andrea Dunkle, the OHS investigator who authored the ruling in favour of Knuttila.

MNP INVESTIGATION The OHS is one of two inves-

tigations into the RM’s activities.

A report coming out of a comprehensive, third-party investigation by MNP is slated to be released on Thursday, October 18 at a special meeting of the RM council.

The report deals with the past 5 years of RM activities, and investigators interviewed a wide range of people on a variety of topics.

The MNP report is slated to become a public document after it is presented to the RM council.

CORMAN PARK AGM One day prior to the release of the MNP report, the annual ratepayers meeting of the RM of Corman Park was slated to be held Wednesday, October 17. The meeting, widely expected to be a stormy session, was held following the Gazette press deadline.

Beef producers get no help only problem, it would be caught, contained and fixed by now. Unfortunately, for beef producers, the problem that started on the floor of the XL Foods facility in Brooks, Alta. grew because of slaughterhouse owners ducking public responsibility, bureaucrats in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) slow to act and a federal Agriculture Minister showing precious leadership in a true crisis.

As Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart aptly put it: “I think there’s plenty of blame to go around at this point.”

It was U.S. authorities that first found E. coli in a shipment of American-bound XL Foods beef on Sept. 4.

That it took until Sept. 11 for CFIA officials to get an official response from XL Foods was a bigger problem demonstrating it’s the agency’s lack of clout with the slaughterhouses.

The CFIA did not issue the first beef recall until Sept. 16. It took until Sept.

Pity the beef producers of our province. They just can’t seem to get a break.

A decade ago it was the BSE “crisis”. This was really less of a crisis than it was about American producers trying to grab stranglehold on their own market by scape-goating Canadian beef.

When it came to BSE, our system worked. Nevertheless, the BSE mess gave traction in the U.S to Country of Origin Labelling that the Canadian federal government is still fighting.

Add to this the natural difficulties of raising beef the ups and downs of markets and weather that have made it exceedingly difficult for beef producers to make a go of it. And now we have the largest beef recall in Canadian history caused the E. coli scare - a problem that that absolutely nothing to do with beef producers and everything to do with what happens on the slaughterhouse floor.

However, were that the

27 - three full week after the Americans raised the alarm bells and after reports of food poisoning due to E. coli - for the CFIA to temporary uspend XL’s license.

But when a federal government agency does now not have the tools to make the system work, it’s up to the politicians to make sure they do. And what beef producers received from federal Agriculture Minister in Gerry Ritz is political fingerpointing, glib remarks and unhelpful ducking of responsibility.

Simply put, we need better compliance with the law and for Ritz to suggest the Conservatives weren’t able to implement one because of the minority government is nonsense. (The bill that might have helped matters was on the floor when the

Conservatives decided to prorogue Parliament.)

Nor was Ritz’s absence in question period helpful when producers needed their Agriculture Minister in Ottawa defending their industry.

But as unhelpful was Ritz’s glib remark at a North Battleford Rotary lunch in which he said he didn’t care where the beef he ate came from. “I know it’s good. I know it’s safe. You have to handle it and cook it properly,’’ he said. The comment came just days before the CFIA temporarily pulled the license from XL - the place were 40 per cent of Canadians do get their beef.

Add to this Ritz’s denial when he finally did return to Ottawa for question period that his government had made any cuts to the food inspection system. That very day, the Parliamentary Budget Office released a report noting the federal government’s plans to cut of $32 million from “food safety and biosecurity risk management systems” at Agri-

culture Canada and $16 million from CFIA’s “food safety program”.

Those CFIA cuts in the spring budget included 300 jobs and 100 inspectors, the union said.

Finally, XL Foods - who

depend on beef producers for their product - took exactly one month after the initial discovery of E. coli to say anything, publicly. They, too, failed the beef producers.

In fact, all have failed our beef producers.

Former RM councilor voting for Henry As a former councilor for the RM of Corman Park with the last two reeves, four years with Mr. Hobday and one and a half years with Mel Henry, I would like to express my feelings of working with the two of them.

Everything didn’t always go smooth and loveydovey with Mr. Hobday, the way people seem to remember. There were some “serious” and rather strong discussions at times. He was more for letting administration look after things.

That was okay as long as the administrator was there, which we all know was very little at times. All the councilors complained about her not being there and still getting a good chunk of rate-

payers’ money, but nothing was done. When all the flooding was going on in Division 7, now Division 6, the former Reeve came out once for about an hour. The present Reeve was out here morning, noon and night and sometime half the night.

I feel that Corman Park has enough stuff going n to keep a Reeve busy full time not doing a bunch of city commitments. The ratepayers benefit by having a full time Reeve. For nearly 30 years, the land immediately south of South Corman Park School has not been used for its legislated purpose which is, according to the Planning and Development Act, a public park, a public recreation area, a natural area. Until recently, most local residents were unaware that this land was designated as Public Reserve. A vision that ensures the intended public use and enjoyment has been brought forward.

The horse park proposal presented to the RM Council by the South Corman Park Horse Owner’s Association is an ideal fit for this land.

Creating this diverse park as a multi-use facility for compatible activities such as hiking, biking, walking, picnics, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, educational events, family gatherings, and much more, while providing a safe environment for horseback riders to meet and practice their sport, is an important and desperately needed venue in the neighborhood. It would facilitate a multitude of ac-

Currently, there is no public facility in South Corman Park for equine recreational activities such as a local fair grounds you would find near Langham or Vanscoy. Riders either must use a private facility to enjoy a safe place to ride or brave riding in the ditches. Ditch riding is becoming increasingly dangerous due to rapid development which means more traffic on the roads and more off road vehicles in the ditches. Horses and vehicular traffic are not a safe combination.

The Grasswood Fillies is a local club for women horse enthusiasts consisting of over 60 riders, most of whom, either live in South Corman Park or board their horses at facilities in the area. Our club fully supports this proposal. This would be a public park for

Options suggested for South Corman Park municipal reserve

ixty acres of land in South Corman Park (SCP) continues to spark controversy as proposals are sought for its use.

About twenty-five SCP area residents and several dogs came to a meeting at the “Log Cabin” facility adjacent to the South Corman park School on Wednesday, October 10 to hear proposals for use of the land designated public reserve.

Located immediately south of the SCP School, the reserve has become a source of contention between two groups, the SCP Horse Owners’ Association (SCPHOA) and the SCP Community Association (SCPCA).

A similar meeting was held September 25, with the October 10 meeting being the final opportunity for the public to present their ideas for the use of the reserve. Presenters were encouraged to keep their proposals down to ten minutes or less.

A range of ideas were presented, from those dealing with dogs and birds to beach volleyball and lacrosse.

Groups representing lure coursing, a falconers club, an off leash dog park, tracking dogs and more, all indicated how their interests could be better served by having access to the public reserve land.

Mark James mentioned that his group’s activities involving the Schutzhund breed of dogs go back 10 – 12 years.

They have hosted national

championships at the school in Clavet and at times use the German Concordia Club for their activities. “We don’t need a huge amount of space, and our activities are typically outside of school hours,” he said.

John Hanbidge suggested using the facility for lure exercising of birds and discussed having a Falconers club. He also suggested having beach volleyball on the site. “Some university students asked me to bring it up because in the city the only place they can play is at the bar.”

Most presenters took care to address three main areas of concern to the community association: do you have finance, liability insurance, and any members. Some mentioned that they were repeat presenters, having brought their proposals to the previous meeting as well.

Lois Ridgway, a member of the SCPCA board, proposed a few ideas as well. She said, “This community hasn’t kept up with population growth.

We don’t have a facility that’s big enough for all to meet.

A bigger community centre would have value.” The current log cabin hosts a number of programs, but they are all small groups. Ridgway would like to see “a bigger log cabin, big enough for events of 100 – 150 people.”

Mark Trimble did not have a proposal but offered both cautions and encouragement.

“We’re at a very exciting time in the community here. We’re coming to a time when we have population growth, and

In response to that, they can do one of four things: They can enter into negotiations with me for a severance package should I decide to take departure from the RM. Or they could order me to return to work. Or they could ignore the ruling, I suppose, which is not a very good option. Or they can appeal the ruling. Those are the options the RM council can discuss with their legal counsel and make a decision. But the OHS has ordered the RM to act immediately, and the council has 7 days to let the OHS know what they intend to do. If the council decides to appeal the ruling, they have 21 days to appeal from the time they got the order.”

RULING LAYS OUT FACTS In the OHS decision, the facts of the case are spelled out in chronological order. The document notes that Knutilla was abruptly fired during a council meeting of the RM of Corman Park on August 12, 2011. A similar motion to terminate her for “insubordination” had been made at a council meeting three weeks earlier,

A lot of the ideas have been very mindful of that.” Trimble would like to see something develop that will accommodate all the different groups.

The SCP Horse Owners’ Association did not present a proposal, although at least two of their number, Charlene Dalen-Brown and Colleen Kellett were present.

Board member Norm Osback noted after the meeting that the horse owners’ group had not presented at the September 25th meeting either.

“If they had a financial plan and someone to create some funds to build what they want to build, I would have expected them to present either at the last meeting or at this meeting. Maybe they think money comes from nowhere.”

Osback noted, “They feel that they can use the facility for free and that they’re entitled to use it. And it is public land and everyone has a right to use it. It shouldn’t be a singleuse facility.”

SCPHOA has been in discussions with the RM with the result that decisions were made at a September 10 meeting to terminate the RM’s existing lease with the SCPCA (with 60 days notice), and entering a lease agreement with the SCP Horse Owners Association for 50 acres of the municipal reserve.

The OHS investigator states that the RM failed to provide specific evidence of insubordination or incompetence on the part of the administrator, and noted the onus is on the employer to justify the termination.

In her ruling, Dunkle notes that Knuttila’s workplace performance received positive evaluations during her 28 years at the RM office.

The only three criticisms reported by former Reeve Ed Hobday were that Knuttila needed to work more frequently in the office rather than at home; she needed to clean her desk and she needed to delegate me work to her staff as she was overburdening herself by attempting to do too much. Hobday also stated that he found Ms. Knuttila “competent, even under stress and a heavy workload.”

“Ms. Knuttila was terminated because she brought forward her complaint of harassment to her employer for investigation and resolution,” stated Dunkle in her ruling. “The employer’s evidence not only fails to meet the onus in Section 28(4), but supports the finding that the termination was intrinsically tied to Ms. Knuttila’s filing her harassment complaint.”

I would like to ask for your support in the upcoming civic election. I will be running for a third term in the town of Dalmeny and would like to see our projects through to completion. we have the new subdivision on the east side, one on the north west corner of town and the new highway which we believe will bolster construction in our community.

I would also like to see some commercial development along the highway coming into town.

There is a need to improve existing infrastructure, roads, water, sewer, etc. I look forward to your support.

I have lived in Dalmeny for 32 years and have been on the Town council for 12 years. I went through and graduated from both Dalmeny schools and was the School Representative Council President my graduating year. I played my sports for Dalmeny teams and am now raising my family here.

I was Dalmeny Soccer President in 2006 & 2007 and had to step down due to health reasons, but have since stepped back into the position and have continued to coach through the last 12 years. I have also volunteered for other groups in town such as announcing hockey games for our Fury Sr. hockey team as well as a few skating carnivals.

Needless to say, I Love this Town. I have watched it grow over the last 30 years into what I feel is the nicest community in the area. I have had the pleasure of being part of some of the changes and truly hope to continue to play an active role in the shaping of our community.

As we grow we will need to address major concerns in regards to affordable housing and creating recreational facilities for our young, and young at heart.

I am not one to make promises, and I have no hidden agenda. I only want to continue to help make Dalmeny a safe and friendly environment for our families and friends, a business friendly community, and a great place to call home, so I ask for your support.

I am a Professional Engineer with Associated Engineering in Saskatoon where I am involved with all aspects of the design, tender and construction of transportation projects.

My background also includes similar work with subdivisions and other types of infrastructure projects. I was formerly employed by the engineering firm that does all of the design and construction supervision for Dalmeny. I have maintained very good relationships with this firm and I will bring these relationships and expertise with me to the council.

I see Dalmeny as a beautiful,

friendly community with a lot of potential. Over the past few years we have seen quite a bit of residential growth in Dalmeny and we have had some infrastructure upgrades which have assisted with that. The plans for the east side of Dalmeny will also serve to grow that aspect of our Town. We have also seen firsthand some of the costs associated with growth as we are still paying for the upgrade to the lagoon and some of our streets will need some attention soon. With the paving of the Dalmeny road, and the growth we’re seeing in Saskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan, who knows what the future will bring for our Town.

It is my desire to be a part of that future. If elected to town council, I will be committed to assisting with the creation of a direction for the town that is consistent with the voice of the community. The two main issues I want to run on are as follows: 1.

I am raising a young family in Dalmeny and I want to make sure that this demographic has representation on the council. I will support family friendly initiatives such as the recent Dalmeny Spray and Play Intergenerational Park Project that is being spearheaded in the community.

2. Dalmeny’s growth needs to be managed properly so that Dalmeny can grow at a rate which is sustainable for all of us. I will bring my expertise in the design and implementation of infrastructure projects to the council so we can move confidently forward in these areas.

My wife and I want to raise our kids in Dalmeny. For that reason, I really want to help Dalmeny continue to be the friendly community that it is.

I want Dalmeny to continue to prosper while keeping the growing pains to a minimum.

Hepburn Mayor and Council candidate platforms MAYORAL Candidates

Hepburn has been home to Roy and me since we moved here in 1984. I am running for Mayor because I feel strongly that this is a way that I can use my experience to serve my community.

Working together with council, some of the goals that I will work towards for the next 4 years are: completing Hepburn’s Official Community Plan, which includes updating the Zoning Bylaw; working together with the 8 surrounding municipalities which form the Twin Rivers group to complete an Official District Plan; work towards addressing Hepburn’s infrastructure needs, including upgrading of the force main, upgrading the lagoon, installing sewer to serve residences not yet hooked up to the sewer system, assessment and upgrading of the older existing sewer system which was installed in 1964, and paving; development of green spaces with a plan for maintenance.

Kyle Willms

Kyle Willms, a 29-year-old single father of two, has decided to run for Mayor of the Town of Hepburn in order to give residents and ratepayers a choice between the status quo and positive change in the way the town conducts business; he is running to represent everybody. He feels strongly that the community needs to be lead by a team of caring citizens who will represent everybody’s desires and needs, promote fair and equitable taxation, and who will guarantee infrastructure improvements and services are available to all residents.

Willms was born in Saskatoon and raised on a dairy farm 4.5 miles south of Hepburn until he was 7 and then he moved into Hepburn where he continues to live and raise his family. Presently he works as a construction worker and had recently done cement work in all of the homes in Hepburn, which was part of the installation of the village’s treated water and hydrant system, the largest infrastructure improvement Hepburn has seen in decades. He also holds a professional truck driving licence with experience in custom harvesting and pulling flat decks.

The level of community dedication that Willms has shown is marked by countless hours assisting his father, who was the Village of Hepburn Maintenance Foreman over the past 22 years, from a very young age. His volunteer and casual duties included recycling and garbage collection, grounds keeping, roadwork, and equipment maintenance for the village. As well, he has volunteered with arena operations that included making ice, Zamboni driving, booth operation, cleaning, and time keeping.

On several occasions Willms has answered the call and volunteered to fight fires with his father on the local volunteer fire department, risking his life for the lives and property of others when not enough firefighters were available.

In his spare time he enjoys playing with his kids, spending time with family and friends, driving ATV’s, playing hockey, repairing and upgrading computers and electronics, mechanics, welding, paint and body, camping, and socializing with his many friends.

With the breadth of work and life experience, as well as youthful energy and vision that Willms would bring to the council table, he hopes to have the opportunity to encourage council to work together in order to serve the citizens of Hepburn in an honest, transparent, accountable, and ethical fashion with a common sense approach. He believes that it is also imperative to provide genuine support to the employees of the town so that they are given the tools, training, and trust to do their jobs so as to foster a positive and productive work environment and community.

If elected mayor, Willms looks forward to using his networking skills to represent all citizens on council, to support local businesses, organizations, schools, and churches, and to liaise with other levels of government to ensure Hepburn thrives and grows as one as it becomes a town.

For three years I worked at the Hepburn municipal office, and for the past year have been a stay at home wife and homemaker, which has been a true blessing. this is my fourth year volunteering on the Hepburn Parks and Rec committee as well. I have a passion to see our community grow while maintaining our core small town values. I have always believed that being involved in the community is important, and have hoped to have a chance to run for council since moving to the community. money in the fight against cancer

tudents at Prairie View School in Dalmeny raised $3,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation as a way of helping in the fight against cancer.

And for one student at the school who lost her aunt to cancer last April, her donation didn’t stop at money. Sarah Vercammen sacrificed several long blonde pigtails to “Locks for Love” – a charitable organization that makes wigs for patients struggling with cancer. The wigs are all manufactured from donated human hair.

At an assembly at Prairie View School on Thursday, October 11, 7-year old Sarah Vercammen proudly displayed her shorn locks as Lindsy Tkach of Dahlia Spa and Salon, a Martensville hair salon, snipped the braids to the applause of the assembled students.

Shannon Vercammen, Sarah’s mother, said her sister-in-law had been battling cancer for over a decade before succumbing to the disease last April. “It was very hard on Sarah, as she was quite close to her auntie, and she wanted to do something to help raise money as a tribute to her,” said Shannon. “Sarah is donating her hair to Locks for Love” in memory of her auntie.”

Dan Vercammen, Sarah’s father, said the loss of his sister, who was in her mid-30s, was devastating to the family. “It started out as breast cancer, and she battled bravely for any years, but then it gradually spread throughout her body and she couldn’t’ fight it anymore,” he said. “We miss her very much.”

The Terry Fox Foundation has distributed millions of dollars over many years to research aimed at battling cancer.

As part of the school’s fundraising efforts, Prairie View School principal Janice Key had promised if the students reached their fundraising goal, that she would dress up in a suit and tie. Meanwhile, Prairie View School Vice-Principal Chris Mason and teacher Lee Coates also had promised to don dresses for the assembly if the students raised $3,000. At the assembly, the teachers kept their end of the bargain, much to the delight of the youngsters.

The young members of the “In Motion” team, including Nicole Hoare, Phoebe Johnson, Thomas Neudorf and Jaret Peters, each got a whipped cream “pie” in the face delivered by Nikolas Burkatsky, Ryan Frehlich, Laine Tkachuk and Carly Heggestad, who had their names drawn in a lottery for the privilege at the assembly.

Prairie View School teacher Theresa Blair got some of the biggest cheers when she followed through on her promise to kiss a rat if the students reached their fundraising goal. The pet rat, owned by Nicole Robinson, was apparently less than enthused about the smooch, and the teacher had to settle for a polite peck on the cheek.

Driver leaves sports car in slough after falling asleep at wheel BICYCLE STOLEN On October 11 police received a complaint that a bike was stolen from the Martensville High School. The bike was described as a white and light blue ladies bike. The owner advised that the bike had been left overnight at the school and was not locked up.

The following day the owner found the bike had been taken.

Police had recovered the bicycle as it had been turned in by a concerned resident. The bicycle was returned to the owner. Students are encouraged to lock their bicycle while it is parked at school and not to leave their bicycle overnight at school property.

GRAFITTI VANDALISM On October 12 RCMP were contacted about some spray paint graffiti in Lion’s Park, Warman. Numerous structures in the park and at the splash pad had been spray painted by vandals. Police documented 19 different pieces of graffiti, many of which were the letters “SWED”. Police are seeking the identity of the culprits responsible for these acts of vandalism that are believed to have occurred during the early morning hours of October 11. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Warman RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

DELISLE DISTURBANCE On October 9 at 4:00 p.m. police were called to a residence in Delisle in response to a call of a disturbance. Residents of the home indicated

RURAL BREAK-IN On October 14 at 3:40 p.m. police attended at a commercial property near the intersection of highways 11 and 12 in the R.M. of Corman Park.

The business had been the victim of a break and enter. Unknown subjects gained entry to the compound by cutting a lock on the gate and then entered several storage containers on the site. Nothing was taken as the business no longer stores property on site due to other B&Es in the past.

CAPSIZED DUMPTRUCK On October 11 at 8:10 a.m. a tractor trailer unit hauling a load of dirt capsized as the vehicle was offloading on Dalmeny Road south of highway 16. Police attended and determined that no one was injured. Witnesses were interviewed and it appears that there may have been a mechanical issue with the vehicle and during the unloading process a shift in weight caused the vehicle to capsize.

No charges are being contemplated.

SPLASHDOWN On October 14 at 8:00 a.m. police were alerted to a vehicle that was in a slough at the intersection of Wanuskewin Road and Penner Road, just north of the Saskatoon city limits. Police attended and located a 2003 Audi A3 car in the water. It was apparent that the vehicle had driven through the stop sign at the 3 way intersection and into the field adjacent, landing in the slough. The registered owner was contacted and he advised that had been driving home at 4:00 a.m. and had fallen asleep at the wheel.

A 23 year old Saskatoon man was charged for failing to report a collision to police.

ORANGE ZONE COLLISION On October 12 at 4:00 p.m.

RCMP were called to a collision on highway 16 near Dalmeny Road. It was reported to police that a westbound tractor trailer unit was overtaking a Toyota Tundra pickup truck as the two vehicles were entering the construction zone at that intersection.

The Toyota slowed to 60 km/h to comply with the speed limit, however, the tractor trailer continued at speeds in excess of 110 km/h and struck the Toyota pick-up. The tractor trailer unit pushed the pick-up for almost 400 meters before coming to a stop. Police attended and arrested the driver of the tractor trailer unit for dangerous driving under the Criminal Code. Police also seized the tractor trailer unit. A 47 year old man from Winkler, MB, was released on a charge of dangerous driving.

Fortunately, there were no injuries sustained in the collision.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE On October 8 at 9:30 a.m.

RCMP received a complaint that someone entered a vehicle parked on the 300 block of Main Street West in Warman and stole a man’s wallet from the vehicle sometime overnight. The vehicle was reportedly left unlocked. Police continue to warn residents that they should not leave valuables in vehicles that are left unattended.

STOLEN STEREO On October 10 police received a complaint of theft from a residence on Albert Street in Radisson. It was reported that a vehicle that had been left unlocked overnight had the car stereo stolen.

No suspects were identified.

It is believed that the stereo was stolen sometime over the course of the previous night.

The following day another residence on Main Street reported that a face-plate from a stereo had been stolen out of their vehicle. Residents are reminded to keep their vehicles locked and their valuables out of sight.

GARAGE BREAK-IN On October 10 it was reported to RCMP that a garage on Main Street in Warman had been broken into. The own-

er could not identify that any property was taken. No suspects have been identified.

When every second counts, preparation saves lives Martensville Fire Department open house aims to educate citizens on how to prepare for emergencies, and how to stay safe

W

hile advances in construction technology have made houses stronger and more energy efficient, the materials used in new homes nowadays are also much more flammable and can burn much more quickly, says Larry Sigfusson, of the Martensville Fire Department.

That’s why it’s more important than ever for people to be educated about fire safety and ensure their homes are equipped with working smoke detectors, he said.

“There’s just a lot less time available to get out of a burning house now than there used to be,” said Sigfusson in an interview at the Martensville Fire Hall on Wednesday, October 10. “Years ago, the standard response time for fire departments to arrive at the scene was 7 minutes. But that was based on the construction materials used in houses in the 1950s and 1960s.

Now, with all the plastic and composite materials that are in all the new homes, it’s estimated that you have less than 4 minutes to get out of the house before the fire really takes off.”

Sigfusson said it’s virtually impossible for any fire department to be on the scene that quickly, even in the best possible circumstances. “That’s why people need to take responsibility to do as much as they can to keep themselves safe and to know what to do in a fire or other emergency,” he said. “They need to make sure they have a working smoke detector and that the batteries are working. They also need to make

sure they have at least two ways out of every room, particularly bedrooms.”

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which ran October 7-13, was “Have Two Ways Out”. Sigfusson said if a room only has one exit, and it is blocked by fire, the consequences can be fatal.

He recommended that for second and third-floor bedrooms, emergency escape ladders are a must.

“They’re basically a rollup ladder that you can hook to the frame of your window and then climb down to the ground or to a lower roof level,” he said. “They’re widely available, and they only cost between 40 and 60 dollars, which isn’t very much when you consider it can save a person’s life.”

The Martensville Fire Department open house is an annual event held every year during Fire Prevention Week, said Sigfusson. “Basically it’s a chance for everyone in the community to come down to the fire hall and meet the people in the department, see the equipment and learn what it’s used for,” he said. “It’s also an opportunity for us to educate the public about fire safety in particular and safety in general.”

The Martensville Fire Department responds to over 320 calls every year, noted Sigfusson, with the majority of those calls being vehicle accidents or medical calls. He says with so many medical emergencies, the level of medical training required for fire department members is significant. “We dropped the ‘volunteer’ from our title many years ago,” he said. “The training involved and the commitment required is considerable. Everyone in the department is either a First Responder, EMT or Primary Care Paramedic.”

module” from SGI was set up at the fire hall to allow people to see firsthand the effects of a vehicle rollover on the people inside. “If you’re not wearing a seatbelt, you’re in a lot of trouble during a rollover,” said Sigfusson. “This demonstration really opens up people’s eyes.”

The rollover module literally spins a vehicle several times in rapid succession while two dummies inside simulate the passengers. After the vehicle comes to rest, the dummies are taken out and people can see the extent of the injuries.

City Celebration Warman’s City Celebration set for Saturday, October 27

E

xcitement is building for Saturday, October 27, when the Town of Warman officially becomes the City of Warman.

“It’s going to be a very memorable event,” says Sharon Martens, an outgoing member of the Warman Town Council and co-chair of the Warman City Celebration Committee.

“There will be something for everyone.”

The event is scheduled to take place at the Legends Centre in Warman, and is timed to coincide with the official opening of that facility.

“The Town of Warman is officially becoming the City of Warman after the civic election on October 24,” said Martens.

“We’ll be unveiling the brand new City of Warman logo, as well as the official colours of the new city. It’s an historic event, and we’re inviting everyone to come and join in the party.”

The festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. with an official ribbon cutting to mark the grand opening of the Legends Centre. Even though the hockey rink portion of the facility has been open since last winter, this fall will see the completion of a portion of the indoor soccer field auditorium in the south half of the building. The celebration ceremony will be the first event in the new auditorium area.

The official declaration of the City of Warman will be signed by the provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs, Jim Reiter, and the Mayor of Warman.

Sharon Martens and Leonard Doell will present a pictorial history of Warman from its founding in 1906 to the present day.

“We will be giving a snapshot of the community through the years,” said Martens. “We like to say that Warman is a town with a past, and a city with a future.”

SILVERBELL GOLF TOURNAMENT IN WARMAN BENEFITS KIDSPORT The 2012 Clark’s Crossing Gazette SilverBell Charity Golf Classic was held September 29 at The Legends Golf Club in Warman. A field of 31 teams of three took part in the 27-hole scramble tournament to raise funds for Warman KidSport. The team of Mark Larsen, Terry Jenson and Ashley Olynick carded a 14-under 58 to win the championship flight while the trio of Steve Silvernagle, Keith Silvernagle and Glen Belliveau finished in second two shots back at 60, winning by countback over the team of Abe Friesen, Ryan Vermeulin and Darrell McKee. The tournament, which featured a silent auction, raffle prizes and a 50-50 draw, raised $7,000 for KidSport in Warman. CY WARMAN’S GRANDSON IS GUEST SPEAKER A very special guest will be among the featured speakers at the City of Warman celebration on Saturday, October 27.

Bryan Warman Jr. is the grandson of Cyrus Warman, after whom the Town of Warman was named.

Bryan and his wife Linda live in South Carolina, USA. Organizers of the Warman city celebration contacted them and extended an invitation. They recently confirmed they will be coming.

“It’s a tremendous honour for our family,” said Bryan Warman Jr. “We wouldn’t miss it for the world. My grandfather was a very interesting guy who led a fascinating life, and I look forward to sharing some of those stories with the people of Warman.”

Bryan Warman noted that his grandfather witnessed, and wrote about, an exciting time in the American Wild West. Cy Warman ran a daily newspaper in the silver-mining boomtown of Creede, Colorado in the early 1890s. Creede recently declared itself a “Sister City“ to Warman, and Warman did the same.

Known as the “Poet of the Rockies,” Cy Warman was one of the most widely-read writers of his era. His articles, poems and stories appeared regularly in the New York Sun and other influential newspapers and magazines. He later moved to London, Ontario where he married and raised a family. He documented the construction of the Canadian Northern Railway line through western Canada. Cy Warman was born in 1855 and passed away in 1914.

RIDERS ON BIG SCREEN The event will also feature a big screen showing the live broadcast of the Saskatchewan Roughriders game that day.

While watching the game, people can partake in some of the finest food Warman has to offer. “A Taste of Warman” will feature food prepared on-site by restaurants in the community.

There will also be horse-drawn wagon rides outside, free public skating at the Legends Arena, children’s activities throughout the day, and plenty of time for socializing.

Hello, my name is Malcolm Chalmers and I am running for the position of Reeve in Corman Park.

My reason for running is to address the taxation of the people of Corman Park. My goals are to lower the taxes and provide the services the residents deserve. I stand for Corman Park remaining as a single municipality. Disharmony in the council needs to be mended because we are far stronger together.

Infrastructure in the municipality needs to repaired because the people depend on it. I am running to represent every citizen of Corman Park truthfully, fairly, and ethically.

In order to achieve these goals, I am going to be honest with you. Taxes will be reassessed and will likely result in a partial reduction of taxes.

Further reductions will be realized over time with new development in acreages and business thereby increasing the tax base. Services and Infrastructure will addressed over a series of budgets to temper spikes in expenditures. All of these initiatives take and will be carefully prioritized.

My qualifications include more than a decade in management with Benjamin Moore & Company Limited where I successfully looked after a facility valued in the millions of dollars. I am familiar with procedure, protocols, and business ethics.

Prior to that, I partnered in a successful apiculture company and worked in the industry itself for 10 years.

Currently, I live on an acreage in Furdale. I recently turned forty nine years old. I have been married to my wife Susan for fourteen years and have a son and a daughter both attending South Corman Park School.

In conclusion, I would like to say that this vote is crucial to the future of Corman Park. The danger of vote splitting cannot be ignored and could result in the incumbent being re elected. If elected, I promise to serve the people of Corman Park with the respect you deserve.

I have worked in the Saskatoon business community for over 35 years. I have managed large numbers of employees, have dealt with budgets, payroll and HR issues.

I presently have my own Consulting Company so I have the time, energy and experience to take on the responsiblity of being your Reeve.

I decided to run for Reeve of Corman Park because I am saddened with what I have witnessed happening, in our RM, over the last couple of years. Our Council is fractured due to lack of leadership, I have attended Council meetings where councilors and ratepayers have been subjected to yelling and swearing. I found the disrespect appalling.

I do not support splitting our RM as the current Reeve is advocating. We need to be remain one united, economically sound RM. Surrounding the growing city of Saskatoon will have challenges. We need to remain one voice to take on those challenges. We must stop pitting north against south, east against west and farmer against acreage owner. We must learn to tolerate each other as every person and lifestyle, regardless of Division, is important.

RCMP REPORT Continued from Page 11

AGRIUM ALTERCATION On October 14 at 10:30 a.m. police were contacted to attend at the Agrium mine west of Saskatoon in the R.M. of Vanscoy. It was reported that two men employed at the mine had been involved in an altercation earlier that morning. Police attended and obtained statements from employees that had observed the altercation. It was learned that one man pushed the other off of a set of steps to the ground and in retaliation, the second man obtained a piece of wood and struck the first man on the shoulder. Both men were arrested and released on charges of assault.

A 44 year old Asquith man and a 57 year old Delisle resident are scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court in answer to the charges on December 12. There were no injuries reported to police and neither man was hospitalized as a result of the assaults.

MAYMONT ASSAULT On October 13 at 3:30 p.m. RCMP were contacted in regards to an assault at the Maymont Central School. A student at the school advised police that while attending a volleyball tournament at the school another male brandished a knife at him in a threatening manner. A 20 year old man from Asquith was located and arrested by police and later released on a charge of assault with a weapon. The matter will be heard in Saskatoon Provincial Court on December 19.

My name is Ken Jeschke and I have lived in Hepburn most of my life. I went to school in Hepburn and married Joanne, who is also from Hepburn. Our three children loved growing up here. We have two sons and a daughter and two granddaughters. We plan to retire here. I work in Saskatoon as a Sales and Service Manager for a company that sells and services pumps, hvac parts and water treatment equipment.

I have always thought of Hepburn as a great place to live.

Having enjoyed all the benefits of living in Hepburn, I would like to give back some of my time, effort and knowledge in serving as a council member.

It is very exciting to see Hepburn grow in population and the development of new homes and residential areas.

I want to be involved in town council to keep our town growing as a vibrant and prosperous town.

That means keeping our infrastructure healthy and sound.

I also want to continue to keep our town attractive and clean.

If elected I encourage people to contact me with their thoughts and ideas.

I have lived in Hepburn since 1989. In 1993, we founded K.C. Plumbing & Heating which has grown from a two person, home based business to the thriving well known business it is today.

I have served as a volunteer firefighter including the position of Deputy Fire Chief and as a board member for the local Co-op.

I have several reasons for running for Council. I believe as this community grows it is important to put in place policies for future development, so that these procedures are consistent and fair to everyone. I feel my experience in construction and my knowledge as a mechanical contractor can be beneficial as the community undertakes larger projects. Having undertaken contract in other communities which are experiencing the same growing pains as Hepburn has given me some insight as to how they are coping with these problems.

Finally, I believe the public has a right to be kept informed of important council decisions (within legal boundaries).

My name is Kevin Midgett.

I was born at Canadian Forces Base, Comox B.C. in 1977. I grew up an army brat, so don’t really have a home town as such.

When my father retired from the forces, my family moved to Meadow Lake where I went through junior and senior high school before moving to Saskatoon.

I then had a very brief stint in the regular forces myself before

coming back to Saskatoon where Stacey and I started our family.

My youngest daughter was born on the very same day as we took possession of our home in Hepburn.

My wife Stacey and I along with our four children have been living here in Hepburn for four years now.

I am not running for council with any particular agenda in mind except to fairly represent what I perceive to be the desires of the people I have been meeting over the past four years.

Should I receive enough votes to become a member of town council I would hope to help bridge the gap between those whose families are newer to the town and those who have been here for generations.

Pam WIllms

My name is Pam Willms, and I am running for councillor of the Town of Hepburn, because I care.

In 1977 I married and moved to the Hepburn area from British Columbia. For the first thirteen years my husband Brian and I owned and operated a dairy farm 4.5 miles south of Hepburn, which we lived on and ran with his Dad and his Dad’s wife. In 1990 we sold the dairy and moved into Hepburn. In 1993 I went to work with the Saskatoon Health Region. While I worked there and raised four children I put myself through school to become a health care worker. Caring for others is my passion and a career I continue to enjoy. I have four grown children and two young grandchildren.

Over the years I have volunteered my time to hold several positions in the community that included sitting on the Hepburn Figure Skating Committee, Hepburn Minor Hockey Committee (for 15 years), President of the Saskatchewan Valley Minor Hockey League, President of the Shepherd’s Villa Board, and Secretary of the Hepburn Co-Op Board. I have always been interested in our community so it is only natural for me to get involved directly with our village on the eve of Hepburn becoming a town. My main goal is to see our town move in a positive direction, holding annual town hall meetings to hear and share the views, dreams, and constructive ideas of the citizens so that all residents and rate payers have a voice and can play a part in shaping our future together.

Now that Hepburn has a reliable source of safe drinking water for all homes, it is time to look into obtaining government grants to facilitate upgrading and installing a dependable sewer system for the entire town that is affordable for all. As I’m sure you are aware of, Hepburn has had three subdivisions go up in the past decade, with the fourth being presently developed. Since we are a growing community we need to ensure all residents are provided

the same services in order to keep our town healthy, environmentally safe, and fiscally sound.

It will be a privilege to serve you as one of your four town councillors if you elect me on October 24th. I will do my best to represent all residents in a fair and equitable fashion, starting with ensuring that our tax dollars are used to build and maintain services enjoyed by all. I believe any job worth doing is worth doing well. Your dreams are my dreams and by working together we can continue to build Hepburn into a town that everyone is proud to call home, as I have for the past 22 years.

My name is Jan Zawada; I have been a resident of Hepburn for the past 5 years. I’m a Correctional Worker at the Saskatoon Correctional Center.

Saskatchewan is a province that is seeing an economic boom and Hepburn is community that is thriving with it. It is still a place where people still have the mentality of small town Saskatchewan. Where you are there to help your neighbour when in need, a friendly wave is still given when you drive by people and people still stop and talk at the Co-op to catch up on the local happenings.

As we all know we have seen many great works in the town with the development of the recent water project that brought city water to our town, ensuring that we have a safe water supply for our community and the recent addition of a new fire truck to protect our homes and our community.

Our community is growing with two new housing developments and bringing in new residence into our town. In the future I would like to see Hepburn grow even more but still have the same small town feeling as we grow.

Hepburn has to begin to prepare for growth. I would like to see a repair to our roads, which have left many people excessive dust, from the large amounts of traffic that is travelled daily.

I would like to see upgrades for our aging sewer system, which will include a drainage system for excess water run off. I would also like to see a Community Watch program implemented into Hepburn, to help reduce crime in our neighbourhood. These are some of the key areas that I will address to town council.

I am here to represent the people of the community, as their voice in Town Council and have fair and equal representation of all tax payers. I’m always approachable for open discussion or just to say Hi. In my closing comments I would like to wish my opponents good luck in the upcoming election and thank you the people of Hepburn for making me very proud to call Hepburn my home for my family and me for years to come.

the Dalmeny curling club for many years in varying positions from helping with ice prep to president. I have also volunteered at the annual fall supper, Dalmeny spring clean up and Dalmeny Days. I have enjoyed the challenges placed before me in all of these positions and have great respect for all who volunteer their time to serve in various clubs, committees and boards.

The improvements to the Highway 16 access road will bring a marked increase in development to our town and with that comes many challenges. My goal is to ensure this progress is sustainable while continuing to make Dalmeny “A great place to call home”.

My family and I have called this community home for the past 12 years and thoroughly agree with that slogan! I’m from a small town and really believe in becoming part of the community. We have two girls in the elementary school and our boy is in high school so we never hesitate to support a school event. You’ll often find me at the rink, whether it’s for figure skating or hockey. I have coached hockey and soccer and have played for the Fury senior hockey team since it began. For the past three years I have acted as the Director of the Dalmeny 3 on 3 Hockey, the main fundraising event for Dalmeny Minor Hockey. I love the spirit of this town. It is evident in the many activities and events that people get behind and support.

Being elected to Dalmeny

Town council gives me the chance not simply of being part of this community but to go a step further. What an opportunity, to fully get to know the broad spectrum of concerns for all the various groups in town. I look forward to the opportunity to listen to these concerns and help shape the future of this town. While Dalmeny is poised for growth in the near future I think town council must ensure that the town does not get too big for its boots. I think increased development is great for the town, when kept within the capacity of the town to handle it. At the same time, I am excited that increased development may afford increased services and leisure activities for all groups within town.

With Dalmeny’s 100 year celebration coming up, there’s no better time to remember that Dalmeny is a great place to call home, and looking forward there’s no reason it can’t become even better.

A lot has changed in Dalmeny since I joined Council nine years ago: Our lobbying for a new highway has paid off. Many who used to suffer from sewer backups are happy the system has been greatly upgraded. Dalmeny’s first library opened, with an overwhelming response. After relentless efforts, a major new neighbourhood has begun in Dalmeny, which will bring many new families to our town. Expansion of sports fields are planned. The list goes on.

But the list needs to be expanded.

My wish list for Dalmeny includes building more parks and play areas and to have

more town employees to clear the snow from our streets quicker, and maintain our streets better in the warmer weather. I wish we had a Recreation Director in the Town Office to enhance community events, activities & sporting facilities and provide more recreation programs and options for us in Dalmeny. Our Fire Department deserves a new fire hall. I wish we had a gas station and other new businesses in town. I wish the plans that are already underway to repair and upgrade many of our roads will continue to move forward.

Some of these wishes we will be able to afford in the near future, and some of it depends on additional funding from the provincial and federal governments.

These wishes will also depend on Town Councillors with a vision for the future of Dalmeny.

It is important to have a Town Councillor who knows and understands the civic process; someone who can use the knowledge of three terms on Council to maximize the benefit for the people of Dalmeny.

The experience of my nine years of serving Dalmeny can continue to benefit you.

My wife Jan & I are now into our 12th year in Dalmeny, and our roots in the area go much deeper than that.

With Jan growing up and going to school here, I have learned much about the past of our town. For over 20 years Dalmeny has been a regular part of my life, with us spending much time in the area with Jan’s family before we moved here.

With your support I will continue to work for the best interests of the town and its residents.

Roads are a great concern to me as they are to the ratepayers.

We need to do our own road audit, with a road budget, and then prioritize our road maintenance and major road upgrading. We will post our intended work schedules so our residents can be aware and plan for their road repairs.

Flooding has affected all areas of Corman Park. We as Council will work hard to help mitigate these problems. Some flooding is due to natural flooding and drought cycles, knowing this we must make sure residents are not allowed to build their homes on natural flood plains.

I will work hard to be a respectful, effective leader. We will work as a Team to start to mend our Council and bring confidence back to our employees so they have a safe, stable environment in which to work.

We will strive to ensure that once again our residents are proud to live in Corman Park.

We will create through action that positive reputation our RM once enjoyed. Our Council will work with all ratepayers in all divisions and we will listen with compassion and understanding.

We will work with our industrial/commercial and residential developers to ensure there is well planned development.

Council will not be able to please everyone but our decisions will and must be based on accurate information, need and utimately what is best for our entire RM. We live in an amazing, diverse RM. ward a tax increase of 20 per cent for this year - nobody on council wished for a tax increase but, serious underfunding from previous years left us very little room to maneuver. We could not touch what is left of the reserves. Our new five-year capital plan (a first for Corman Park) has laid out a framework for road maintenance and repair. I was personally involved with the planning department to bring Brandt Tractor, Graham Construction and New Life Feeds to the RM. These firms represent $160 million of construction and 1/4 million dollars per year in taxes.

I am the chairman of the flood mitigation committee, before I was elected the meeting were “blame someone else” for each municipality’s problem.

When I was elected I met with each urban municipality: Martensivlle, Warman Dalmeny and Osler, and we agreed the flooding was collectively “our problem”. The degree of cooperation impressed Sask Watershed Authority enough to obtaain $1 million for Sask Government to do the engineering study for the area. Golder and Associates are doing that study now.

Last year we purchased another modern asphalt truck to increase and maintain our paved roads. A decision must be made about the South Corman landfill. Do we dig new cells or do we make a transfer site. A new cell will cost about a million dollars. The option to close the landfill; in my opinion does not exist.

The RM’s relationship with the City of Saskatoon through Saskatoon Planning District, Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority and Saskatoon North Community Association are at an all-time high. I have worked with Dundurn, Hanley, Sheilds, RM of

Dundurn, RM of Lost River and RM of Blucher to bring Corman Park on as a partner in Dundurn Rural Water Utility. The same municipalities are working to take over Blackstrap Provincial Park and convert it to a Regional Park. The park has been neglected by the government and we feel if it is run properly and looked after it will be a great addition to our recreational opportunity for the whole region.

I support the Corman Park Police Services (CPPS) - when I took over as chairman of the police commission our force was royally underfunded; not enough officers, worn out cars, outdated weapons and a poorly-equipped office. CPPS now has bought three new vechicles in 2011 and 2012, they have new up-to-date weapons and computer-equipped cars. The office is able to link up with other police forces to bring a united policing effort to Corman Park with RCMP and Saskatoon Police.

Much has been made by the media regarding disputes in council. Sometimes the debates are raucous; but the issues are huge - finance, road maintenance and development.

These issues are important and deserve deliberate and intense discussion. Corman Park is the largest RM in the province surrounding the fastest growing urban in Canada. You did not elect councillors to follow like sheep - you did not elect a reeve to hold their hand or pat them on the head. We were all elected to serve Corman Park and the citizens of Corman Park - We get the business of Corman Park done - No one promised that the job would be easy: The OCP is an example - We all know that a new OCP is needed - Our concern and debate is to do the most good for the most people. Each member of council represents people with different concerns.

We have to balance that - we do our best. While we do not always see eye to eye I respect the position of each and every councillor. I am offering another term to continue the work I am doing.

On the road to recovery Not only did the Saskatoon Blades recover the winning formula and move to within a point of an Eastern Conference playoff spot, but the Bridge City Bunch played three games over this past weekend that closely resembled what, on paper, is what they are capable of.

Some bad bounces and critical errors doused a rally on Friday in a 4-3 loss to the Kootenay Ice. But, that setback seemed to be the kick-start for the Blades’ first back-to-back victories of the season.

On Saturday, Saskatoon owned the territorial advantage and downed the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-2 before finding the energy to out-work and out-score the dangerous Medicine Hat Tigers 6-3 on Sunday night.

“When we were talking about this three-game road trip, lots of times, going on the road, allows the guys just to get together to feel like a team no matter what the situation that you’re going through,” explained Blades’ assistant coach Curtis Leschyshyn.

“It seems to create a better atmosphere and coming home with two wins out of three (games), the guys are very happy and played very well (Sunday night)!

Saskatoon’s record may only be 4-7-0, but the weekend results will boost the sagging confidence of a team with high expectations moving forward.

BLADES PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK – Josh Nicholls found his scoring touch over the weekend. After being shutout, along with the rest of the Bridge City Bunch in last Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to Portland, the 20-year-old had two goals and an assist in the Blades’ 4-3 loss in Kootenay on Friday; the go-ahead goal for good in Saturday’s 5-2 triumph in Lethbridge; another two goal plus one assist effort in Sunday’s 6-3 victory in Medicine Hat. It added up to five goals and two assists, with a +2 ranking, for the four games for the right winger. The Tsawassen, B.C. product leads Saskatoon with eight goals and 14 points.

he Martensville Royals needed a win in their last regular season game to secure a playoff spot, and they came through in a big way last Friday, beating the host Warman Wolverines 43-28 at Neufeld Field.

“The guys really gave it a team effort, and did what they had to do,” said Martensville coach Lyle Evanisky. “They knew it was desperation time.”

Still smarting from a 3422 loss to Warman on September 14 on home turf, the Royals had extra incentive to regain bragging rights in the traditional Martensville-Warman rivalry. They still had something to prove.

Warman, on the other hand, was enjoying its most successful regular season since the program started 4 years

ago. Having already sewed up second place in the 9-man high school football conference with a 4-1 record, the Wolverines already knew they would be hosting a playoff game on Saturday, October 20 – the first in the school’s football history.

That may have had something to do with the Warman squad coming out flat in the first half of the game against Martensville.

“I’d hate to think that’s the case, but it sure looked like it today,” mused Wolverines coach Tyler Scheidt.

“When it comes to the Warman-Martensville rivalry, they’re all big games.

This was a contest we should have been better prepared for.”

The Royals were strong right out of the gate, scoring a safety on their opening kickoff and controlling the ball for much of the first quarter. Peter Kuxhaus scored his first of two touchdowns midway through the opening frame and added another in the second quar-

Road to playoffs takes a little detour The road to the 2012 CFL playoffs took a detour. The Saskatchewan Roughriders were denied a fourth-straight victory Saturday in Edmonton, falling 37-20 to the Eskimos who suddenly have new life and are just two points back of the Riders for thirdplace in the CFL West with three games to go.

In what looked like a Saskatchewan alumni game, three former Riders combined to torch their old club. Kerry Joseph fired three touchdown passes, Hugh Charles piled up over 150 yards rushing and Cary Koch caught a first half touchdown. Funny, no one is scorning the Eskimos for employing Rider “cast-offs”. I never liked that term anyways.

True to form, Rider head coach Corey Chamblin downplayed the significance of the loss even though team squandered a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win.

When his team wins Chamblin is quick to boot them in the pants while after losses he routinely pats them on the back.

Maybe it’s different behind closed doors.

But if the Riders needed an excuse, they could point to a couple in this one. They were playing their second-straight road game within six days

and some questionable pass interference calls at key times greatly enhanced the Eskimos’ chances in the game. Still, Chamblin wasn’t about to play the blame game. “It’s one of those games where regardless of what was stacked against us, we came to play football,” Chamblin reasoned.

“They fought through the elements.

(The short week) is part of the game. It’s a two-head sword.

If you win, you’re sky-high.

It was an adverse week. We didn’t win but we fought.”

As far as the officiating goes, the Riders didn’t get the breaks but they were on the other end of some calls in Week 15 in Toronto.

“The refs must have been on a short week too,” Chamblin laughed. “Some of the calls that were made, he looked tired! But we moved on.”

It’s unlikely those comments will result in a fine.

However that’s the way things seem to go at Commonwealth Stadium where the Riders have only won 9 of their last 50 visits.

Saskatchewan appears to

be on a collision course for the playoffs which is a big coup after missing last year. The only question remaining is where will they finish and who will they play?

Having already lost the tiebreakers to division foes Calgary and Edmonton, there’s still a realistic shot of the Riders crossing over to the East Division for the playoffs with a fourth-place finish. The Riders are looking ahead and not behind, but I’m just presenting the scenario. Road games in Rogers Centre and Olympic Stadium seem rather inviting.

And there’s no shame in crossing over either.

During the Riders’ 10-year playoff streak last decade, they did it twice (2002, 2005).

It just feels good to even be talking about the playoffs. As distasteful as Saturday’s loss was - and the Riders’ performance in it - it’s better to lose in October than November.

And Chamblin knows it.

“One or two games and we’re where we need to be,” the Rider coach asserted. “The playoffs didn’t start today.

There will be an opportunity next week also.”

That’s against Montreal, the Riders’ old Grey Cup nemesis, Saturday in Regina.

But with the score 22-7 at the break, the host team had their work cut out for them in the final two quarters.

The third quarter saw Martensville add to its lead on touchdowns by Hayward and Brayden Heck, while Warman’s Adam Leik added a major for Warman. In the final quarter, Josh Misskey and Anthony Halborg scored touchdowns for the Wolverines, while Martensville’s Morgan Avery kept the game out of reach.

Evanisky said a combination of healthy bodies and pre-game strategy proved to be the difference.

“We finally got guys healthy and we had everyone in the lineup that we wanted,” he said. “It was good to get Shayne Hayward back at the quarterback position. He’s a smart kid and he throws the ball well, and we just have a lot of confidence when he’s behind centre. We also spent a lot of time this past week working on our offense. We studied a lot of game film, so we had a pretty good idea what to expect from Warman. And defensively, when you only give up 7 points per quarter, that helps too.”

Evanisky said where Martensville ends up in the regular season standings depended on the outcome of the game between Meadow Lake and John Paul II of North Battleford. “But either way, we will end up either 3rd or 4th, and that means we’re in the playoffs,” he said.

Scheidt said Martensville deserved full credit for coming into the game prepared.

“They passed the ball well, and they ran the ball down our throats. We just couldn’t stop them and they made some very big plays. It was unfortunate for us.”

Rebels slam the door shut on Kobras

T

he Delisle Rebels totally shut down the Kindersley Kobras last Friday, finishing off their regular season with a perfect 6-0 record.

At the end of the first quarter the Rebels were leading 21 – 0, which was an omen of things to come. Their domination resulted in a 83 – 0 win, and their highest scoring game this year.

Rebels Coach Ken Byers credits strong and longstanding community support for football in Delisle as well as a strong commitment by the players.

Byers said there’s a big difference between being involved with football and being committed. He mentioned a story about ham and eggs for breakfast. “The chickens are involved with the breakfast but the pigs are committed,” he said.

Delisle players leave everything on the field. Byers also said they watch a lot of game film. “They watch game footage at lunch hour and sometimes they take it home to watch.”

On the field late in the second quarter Jared Derdall intercepted a Kindersley pass which resulted in a touchdown

again with one minute remaining in the first half, snagging the ball in the middle of a lot of traffic on the field. The team then attempted a two point conversion which failed.

The score was 48-0 going into the half.

By the fourth quarter the Rebels lead allowed them to put their second-string quarterback, James Shirley, on the field. A grade nine student, Shirley was able to complete a pass to his brother Jeff who ran in for a touchdown. Jake Schumacher followed this up with another touchdown.

Tanner Olson played a great game with four touchdowns to his credit. He is very passionate about the Delisle football program.

“Growing up here, you just want to get into Grade 9 so you can go into that clubhouse and put on the Rebels jersey,” said Olson. “There’s a lot of pride we have playing for this team.

We have a great record over our years and Coach Byers always does a great job coaching us every year. Everyone comes together and we all want to win for one another.”

Grade 12 student Taylor Barber, who also put the ball in the end zone said: “As a defense we played really well today and shut down all aspects, running game and pass game.”

Barber added: “the football program here is unbelievable, best in Saskatchewan hands down. You grow up here wanting to play. As soon as you step in that clubhouse it’s a dream come true, you wanna play so bad. Every year you get so many kids coming out and it’s a really solid program.”

Barber said what makes it good is “just the community itself, it’s such a team sport, everyone comes out here, works their hardest every day, the coaches do a phenomenal job.

It’s passion and pride.”

Byers said the amazing thing is not the scoreboard, but the fact that “we have forty guys who passionately want to play football.” Delisle and area does not have the population base of places like Martensville or Warman with over 7,000 people, but they have a very high ratio of interest in the game.

Regarding who gets play time on the field, Olson said, “It’s always about who gives it all in practice and then they put the nine guys on the field who want to win the most and we’ll put it all out there.”

Barber says to anyone they meet in the playoffs, “We’re rolling in. We’re not getting stopped, we’re coming for ya.

And we’re going all the way, back to back this year, repeat provincial champs.

PLAYOFF REMATCH With the win over Warman, Martensville shot up the standings to finish in 3rd spot in the conference, relegating Meadow Lake to 4th place. Meadow Lake defeated

Delisle Chiefs win overtime shootout in PJHL season opener

T

he Delisle Chiefs started off the 2012-13 regular season on a winning note, edging the Saskatoon Royals 3-2 in an overtime shootout at Harold Latrace Arena on Thursday, October 11.

“It was definitely the start we wanted, but they made us work for it,” said Chiefs coach Dave Norris after the game.

“We took it to the limit.”

“We started off strong in the first period but then about

midway through the second frame we started to lose a bit of that momentum and they capitalized,” said Norris. “We have a lot of rookies in the lineup and maybe they weren’t used to this level of competition, or maybe it was a case of nerves. But in the end, our guys showed they really wanted the win and they stuck to it and delivered.”

The Chiefs’ Stacy Campbell had a 2-point night, assisting on Chris Musselman’s opening goal in the first period to put Delisle ahead, and then adding a goal of his own

in the second period. At the midway point of the game, Delisle was dominating, outshooting the Royals 30-18.

But the Royals bounced back in the dying minutes of the second when Hayden Cameron scored on a breakaway, putting the puck past Chiefs’ goaltender Keith Boon. The Royals’ Shane Pickett tied things up early in the third frame, and that’s the way things stayed through a 5-minute overtime. In the shootout, Boon got his revenge, stopping Hayden Cameron at point blank range.

Delisle’s Dylan Kochan finally scored the game-winner with a series of fancy dekes that outfoxed Royals’ goaltender Jay Hudon.

“I played with the Royals last year,” explained Boon after the game. “So Hayden and I go way back. I know his moves. We practiced against each other lots of times, and I’d say it was about 50-50. He put it past me as often as I stopped him. But it was nice tonight to get the win against my old team, that’s for sure.”

on since he was very young.

“I finally got a chance to try it,” he said with a grin. “The three guys who went before me in the shootout all shot, so that set me up for a fake shot and a deke, and it worked.”

Norris said the win was a big one, not just because it starts the season out on a positive note, but also because it’s against the Royals.

“It was a great game. For us to come and win a game against them in their own rink is big,” he said. “Every game against the Royals is intense. It’s no secret that

the Royals have traditionally owned top spot in the north division, and it’s also no secret we’ve been working hard to unseat them. I think a lot of the rookies might not have known that rivalry before tonight because they’ve never experienced it before, but they sure know about it now.”

The Chiefs went on to lose their home-opener in Delisle on Saturday, October 13 by a score of 4-1 to the Saskatoon Westleys, but rebounded on Sunday, October 14 with a 5-0 win over the Ochapawace Thunder in Delisle.
