Rollover claims life of Martensville resident A 45-year old man from Martensville is dead as a result of a single-vehicle rollover early Friday morning.

According to Sergeant Mark Ochitwa of the Warman RCMP Detachment, police were called at 1:50 a.m. on Friday, May 24.

The rollover occurred approximately one mile west of Radisson on Highway 16, said Ochitwa.

“When RCMP members arrived, first responders from Langham Fire Department and Radisson Fire Department

were already providing emergency care to the driver, the sole occupant of a 2011 Dodge Ram truck,” said Ochitwa.

“STARS ambulance was dispatched to the scene. However, MD Ambulance personnel pronounced the 45-year-old driver

The name of the deceased has not yet been released by police. Ochitwa said so far the investigation has revealed the Dodge truck was driving eastbound, left the highway and struck an approach in the center median which caused it to roll. The road conditions were dry and the weather was clear at the time of the collision. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. An RCMP Collision Analyst is assisting with the investigation.

martensville camper fire

The Martensville Fire Department responded to a blaze that occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 25. No one was injured in the fire, which did considerable damage to a camper in the driveway of a home on Second Avenue North in Martensville. The fire department was on the scene about five minutes after the call came in and were able to get the fire under control in under a minute. Accord-

ing to the fire department, by the time the blaze was contained, the flames were getting close to the roof of the house behind the camper. Firefighters remained on the scene doing salvage work for another 10 minutes after the fire was extinguished. Saturday was a busy day for the Martensville firefighters, who also responded to a smoke alarm call shortly after the camper fire, as well as a medical call in the RM of Corman Park. Where there’s a will, there’s a way Rain doesn’t dampen spirits as volunteers clean up aftermath of flooding in Borden

Over 100 volunteers braved a torrential downpour on Saturday, May 25 to pick up sandbags and clear away floodrelated debris in the Village of Borden.

Drenched and muddy, the people schlepping sandbags in the driving rain were a cheerful bunch for the most part.

“Hey, at least it can’t last forever,” said one volunteer with a grin, pitching a 30-pound sandbag into the bucket of a front-end loader. “Anyhow, we’ve been through worse.”

Over at the sports grounds, other volunteers were busy getting the sand out of the estimated 49,000 bags and collecting the plastic for transport to a disposal site. The sand - over 2 million pounds of it - was being loaded into trucks and transported back across the highway to the farm where it had been hastily dug up a little over a month before.

“It’s been pretty amazing,” said Tom Redhead, a village councilor in Borden and chairman of the cleanup committee in an interview May 25.

“We’ve got more than a hundred volunteers out today on a rainy, miserable day. But that doesn’t surprise me, because it’s been that way for a whole month. Ever since the flooding started we’ve had no shortage of people stepping up to help out their neighbours.”

Redhead said the cleanup was a big job, and noted that many volunteers worked for several days prior to Saturday to lighten the workload.

“I wasn’t sure if we could get everything done in one day, but we got a head start on it because a lot of the guys with equipment were working ahead of time,” he said. “I’m pretty sure now we’ll get it all done today.

“I just want to see every last sandbag out of this town and gone,” he added. “I don’t ever want to see another sandbag for the rest of my life.”

Redhead said the toughest part of the last few weeks was the amount of

time people had to devote to simply keeping the floodwaters at bay.

“It took a month of out of everyone’s life,” he said. “We’re all looking forward to getting back to normal.”

Borden Mayor Dave Buckingham said while the costs associated with the flood are still being added up, he is confident the provincial flood relief programs will help soften the financial burden for local residents.

“Fortunately for us the government is going to pick up a significant portion of the costs,” said Buckingham.

“There will be some expenses to the taxpayers because we’re going to upgrade some of our infrastructure, so hopefully this doesn’t happen to us again.”

The Mayor said a 48-inch corrugated steel culvert at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and Baltimore Street is being replaced with a 60-inch smoothsided culvert.

“That will allow a much greater capacity to handle any surge of water,” said Buckingham. “The big problem we had was that the culvert simply couldn’t handle the flow, and we had to cut the road and put in a temporary bridge.”

Buckingham said the new culvert should be installed in the next couple of weeks.

For residents of Borden whose homes were threatened by the floodwaters that rose rapidly during the last few days of April, seeing the sandbags hauled away was a relief.

Justin Block said hearing the sound of rushing waters just a few feet from his house meant there were a few sleepless nights for him and his wife Rachel.

“It got pretty crazy for a while there,” said Block in an interview near where a yellowed line in the grass showed where the sandbags had recently been. “The water came up three or four feet the first day, and if the sandbags and pumps hadn’t been going, our house would have been awful wet.”

Block said the emergency measures committee at the village monitored the situation daily and took steps to prevent injuries to people and damage to homes and property.

Buckingham said the experience turned out to be a positive one for the community.

“People donated their time and their equipment and even money out

of their own pockets,” said the Mayor.

“Without volunteers, this would have been much worse.”

He concluded the cleanup and repair efforts will likely continue for weeks, not just in the Village of Borden, but in the RM of Great Bend as well.

“Radisson Lake still has a significant amount of water, and that will probably take all summer to drain,” concluded Buckingham. “But I think that we’re out of the woods when it comes to serious flood danger now.”

Redhead said the day wrapped up with a community supper and social gathering. “The event gave us time to reflect, thank everyone, and celebrate the amazing efforts and success of the last 25 days,” he said.

RM of Great Bend on the mend after flood

It could take all summer for the RM of Great Bend to get back to normal, according to Ron Saunders, Reeve of the rural municipality.

“Things are looking better than they did a week ago, no question,” said Saunders in an interview on Saturday, May 25.

“But realistically, we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

At the height of the flooding crisis, which began in late April and continued for most of the month of May, over 30 roads throughout the RM had to be cut because the culverts were unable to handle the rushing water.

And while a fire ban imposed recently has since been lifted, the RM is still under a state of emergency.

At least one temporary bridge on Grid Road 685 near Borden had to be installed after the normal trickle of water in the culvert had grown into a raging river. That bridge was removed on Friday, May 24 and the road has since been repaired.

And while many other major roads throughout the RM have also been repaired, there are still seven others that remain impassible, said Saunders.

“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “There’s a contractor working on Larsen Road now, and it should be fixed in the near future. We’re replacing the culvert that had been taken out. We have more culverts on order and as soon as we get the shipment we’ll be installing them as quickly as we can.”

Saunders credited the RM staff with going the extra mile to keep roads open for ratepayers.

Youngsters tried their hand at milking a cow at the Forestry Farm’s 100-year anniversary celebration in Saskatoon on Sunday, May 26. The Forestry Farm Park and Zoo began in 1913 as the Sutherland federal tree nursery, supplying trees to homesteads across Saskatchewan. The celebration featured old-time wagon rides, games and other family-oriented activities.

Moore, OK tragedy not Conservatives should demand accountability to be ignored at home

COMMENTARY

The birds that were happily singing suddenly go quiet and the skies grow dark. Whatever wind there was up to that point has disappeared into a stillness that words can’t begin to describe.

It’s tornado season once again and based on the record number that hit Saskatchewan in 2012, there is no reason to believe the numbers won’t be similar again this year.

Even though it may not be a hot, muggy day, bad weather can rear its ugly head in a hurry.

Ground temperature is not necessarily an indicator of when a major storm will strike. It is the atmospheric conditions – otherwise known as stability – thousands of feet above us that determines the possibility of a destructive storm occurring.

While no one can predict if a tornado or straight line wind will present itself until minutes beforehand, it is imperative to have a plan in place just in case. Pilots are taught to always have a landing area chosen – even if in cruise flight thousands of feet up – in case they need to put their airplane down in an emergency. Like pilots, we on the ground must always have a suitable place chosen in case a tornado strikes.

Two dozen people lost their lives recently in the small city of Moore, OK as a powerful EF5 tornado – estimated to be a mile wide – moved more than 20 miles and flattened the suburb of Oklahoma City. The victims of this tragedy sought shelter but the storm was much too powerful and, despite their best efforts, lives were tragically taken.

Tornadoes are not something any of us generally take lightly. In fact, it’s not a bad thing if people take cover in appropriate shelter even if a twister fails to develop.

It’s better to be safe than sorry.

At some point, you have to feel for the true-to-their-heart Conservatives who’ve endured much during this recent Senate debacle.

Of course, the left will likely be appalled at any sympathy expressed towards Conservative voters or their Senators/MPs, but we should always draw a clear distinction between the two. But the left in this province should understand better than most the separation between the party rank and file and the actions of their politicians while in government.

Whether it is the wasteful Spudco of the NDP, caucus fraud of the Progressive Conservatives or the Saskatchewan Liberal leadership fiascos there is nothing more disheartening to the rank and file of a party than to helplessly watch the implosion of the governing party it supported.

In fact, in can be argued that those Conservatives who extended their support to the political party/cause by signing a party membership card or by offering a political donation should be most appalled by the shenanigans of Mike Duffy or even Pamela Wallin, Prime Minister Stephen Harper,

his former chief-of-staff Nigel Wright et. al.

But by the same token, it should also be these rank and file supporters/donors who should be the loudest in demanding accountability from their MPs, Prime Minister and Senators – accountability that nobody in this country is getting right now.

Admittedly, what exactly politicians believe and what they say in the heat of battle/desire to get elected can sometimes be two different things.

But those that open up both their hearts and their wallets to a politic party either through ballot support or monetary donation are usually unwavering in their beliefs and principles.

So when then federal opposition leader Stephen Harper vowed in 2005 that “Conservatives believe as basic principle that politicians should not be accountable to other politicians”, it was a comment most cheered by Conservatives.

“There is going to be a new code of conduct on Parliament Hill,” Harper said in the wake of the Jean Chretien-Liberal sponsorship scandal. “Bend the rules and you will be charged.

Abuse the public trust and you will go to prison. If you behave unethically or dishonestly, then don’t expect a reward from this prime minister of Canada.”

Added to his calls for a tougher stance on crime, an end to the long gun registry, support for lower taxes and

an end to the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly and we got from Stephen Harper of 2005 was an agenda worthy of conservative-Canada – especially in rural Western Canada where values are simple and straightforward.

But contrast this with today’s goings-on with Conservative Senators.

What’s at issue has long-ago breached the political gamesmanship of whether Senators are actually permanent residents of the provinces in which they represent or whether their appointments were ever more than a reward for being good party fund-raisers.

With the allegations of a $90,000 cheque Wright to cover off Duffy’s inappropriate housing claims, we have entered an area of much more serious impropriety – interfering with a Senator who has admitted to claiming tax money for personal gain. This should rightly

make Conservatives bristle.

It simply isn’t good enough for Harper to say he is angry after the resignation of Duffy from Senate caucus and Wright from his job as chief of staff.

Nor is good enough to wax on to his Conservatives MPs about their “culture of accountability” and then refuse to take reporters’ questions and skip Question Period and the country without any answers or commitment to a process that would provide answers.

Like all other Canadians, Conservative should be demanding better.

Party supporters have not just the right but also the duty to demand accountability that will only come through an independent review process.

If Conservatives are true to their values of fair tax spending and accountability in government, it is only logical that they make this demand of their leader.

CORRECTION In the May 23, 2013 edition of the Gazette, an article on Saskatchewan NDP Leader Cam Broten’s comments on the recent Legislative session contained inaccuracies. The Gazette regrets the errors, which occurred during the editing process.

1. The statement was attributed to Mr. Broten that the provincial government’s response to flood victims has been progressing quickly. In fact, Mr. Broten is very concerned that the response of the government has not been good enough. He notes that there are still $80 million in outstanding claims going back to 2010, and no money was budgeted by the Sask Party government this year to pay out those, or any new claims.

2. The reference to the current total provincial debt should actually be attributed to the end-of-year provincial debt, which is projected to reach $19.1 billion.

3. Mr. Broten did not make any reference to layoffs of high school teachers in his remarks about government underfunding education and reducing educational assistants.

Appreciation to everyone who helped in Borden’s battle against flood The Village of Borden has been through a lot over the past month due to the flooding.

I want to take a moment to reflect on the people that have made this past week successful.

I’ve heard many kind words and positive feedback, but I need to make sure they are shared with everyone. As Mayor of Borden, I have had constant involvement and put my name on many hard decisions

and directives. But I am merely the conductor in this great symphony. It is the EMO, village council, firefighters, citizens, students, neighbours, family, friends and countless other volunteers that are the musicians that made the music.

Village at Crossmount project clears first hurdle at Corman Park council The RM of Corman Park Council gave first reading at its May 21 meeting to amendments to its development plan and zoning bylaws that would designate The Village at Crossmount as Direct Control District 1.

The new designation gives council direct control over land use in the proposed $150 million “aging in place” seniors community that would occupy about 400 acres at Cranberry Flats, roughly six kilometers south of Saskatoon off Highway 219.

The land for the proposed project is owned by the Kenmore Land Company, and the consortium looking to build the complex is headed by Duncan McKercher. The Crossmount

community would offer a variety of care levels for approximately 1,100 residents ranging from fully-independent cottages to round-the-clock assistance and medical care.

Phase 1 of the Crossmount project would involve development of approximately 160 acres and include 468 dwelling units. Phase 1 development would include construction of necessary infrastructure, construction of the Village Centre area and a Village Supportive Housing development area.

There would also be an agri-torism component to this phase.

The Village Centre Area would consist of one residential care facility containing between 100 and 120 single and double-bed care suites, fully staffed with Level 1 to Level 4 support; several multi-unit residential dwellings, medi-

cal services, restaurants, retail and personal service shops, administration office, recreation facilities and other buildings.

The developer would be responsible for improvements to the access for Highway 219 from the property.

The passage of first reading means that formal notification will now be given to landowners in the immediate vicinity of the proposed development.

An advertisement of the project will be posted in the newspaper, and a public hearing will take place in June.

The proposed project first came to the RM council in April. Since then, some councilors and ratepayers have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the largescale project on surrounding property values and the environment.

The lockdown has been lifted at the Warman Mennonite Special Care Home (WMSCH).

The home was re-opened to visitors on Tuesday, May 28.

The Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) gave the all-clear after the residence had gone five days without a new case of Human Metapneumovirus, the respiratory disease which appeared suddenly on Monday, May 13.

A total of nine residents were infected with the Human Metapneumovirus, said Jim Wiebe, administrator of the WMSCH.

In an interview on May 28 a few hours after the lockdown was lifted, Wiebe said three staff members had also been affected.

“But overall, there weren’t that many staff who got sick,” said Wiebe. “It wasn’t as bad assome other infections, like Norwalk, which can really take a toll on everyone.”

Wiebe said the virus was related to pneumonia, and produced symptoms including fever, runny nose, coughing, and breathing problems.

The lockdown lasted ten days, and it was very hard on many residents, said Wiebe. He said there were a lot of happy people converging on the residence once the word came from the SHR that they had received the all-clear to re-open their doors.

“We had a pretty big crowd for lunch today,” he said.

The WMSCH walkathon slated for Saturday, June 1 to raise funds for ceiling lifts is going ahead as scheduled, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Radisson Jamboree this weekend features Warman nursing home re-opens doors country, old-time and gospel music The Radisson Jamboree is back for another year.

The two-day event featuring old-time, country and gospel music by local as well as nationally-known artists is slated for Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2 at the Radisson arena.

Proceeds from the jamboree are going toward the purchase of a new fire truck for the Radisson Fire Department.

This year marks the third annual jamboree, which began as part of the Radisson Agricultural Fair, but has since taken on a life of its own after being

slotted into the first weekend in June.

Radisson musician Gerald Wiebe has recorded a theme song for the jamboree, which is available for download from the town’s website at www. radisson.ca.

Hosted by CJWW Radio’s Sharon Jacobs, the jamboree lineup includes Mel Deagnon, Leroy and Friends, Larry Symynuk, Just Us, John Sloan, Wiebe Family, Will Ballantyne, the Julseths, Copper Creek, Norm and the Golden Aces, The Hamps, The Ukrainian Connection, and Jim and Bren-

Nationally-televised triathlon to follow course from Pike Lake to Saskatoon

A nationally-televised triathlon on Sunday, June 30 will result in the temporary closure of the northbound lane of Valley Road.

The lane closure, expected to last about four hours from 8:00 a.m. to noon, was approved by the RM of Corman Park council at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 21. An estimated 450 cyclists will be competing in the race, which is slated to be broadcast on TSN. While the lane closure will create some inconvenience, commercial businesses along the busy stretch of road will still be able to accommodate customers thanks to traffic control measures put in place by race organizers.

The written request for the

lane closure was made by Carmen Bell, Race Director for the Subaru Saskatoon Triathlon.

Bruce Gordon, a member of the event’s organizing committee and a competitive racer with the Saskatoon Triathlon Club, addressed the RM council at the meeting on Bell’s behalf.

The triathlon has been held for the last 10 years in the Pike Lake area, but this is the first time it’s made the jump to the national stage as part of the Subaru Western Series.

“It takes it to a whole new level,” Gordon stated. “We’re organizing it as a local club, but this has allowed us to have the event grow and gain national attention. As a result we have changed the venue. We will still have the swimming portion at Pike Lake, but the cycling portion will be from Pike Lake to

Saskatoon.”

The cycling portion of the triathlon will start at Pike Lake, travel north on Highway 60 to the intersection with Valley Road, and then east and north along Valley Road to Saskatoon.

The big concern for organizers, and for council, is the lack of shoulders on Valley Road.

When the race organizers made the initial request for closing the northbound lane of Valley Road, the RM’s Public Works Commttee was unconvinced. But the request for lane closure was carried at the full council meeting on May 21.

Race marshalls and police will help direct traffic during the race and access to businesses will remain open. Southbound traffic on Valley Road will be unaffected, but northbound traffic will be restricted.

Expires Sept 1/2013 for first ti Warman City Council has discussed the issue of hiring a full-time trained fire chief for at least the past year and, after consultations with the Warman Fire Department, a decision was made to include the cost of a fulltime Deputy Fire Chief in this year’s budget.

The City of Warman posted an advertisement for a full-time Deputy Fire Chief on its website on Monday, May 27. The position is expected to evolve to a full-time fire chief by approximately 2015.

Warman Fire Chief Gord Thompson would retain his position as head of the fire department until that time.

According to the information posted on the city website, the primary function of the Deputy Fire Chief position would be to provide leadership and assist in managemt strategies and adminstration. The deputy fire chief would take care of day-to-day operations at the fire hall, lead the training and fire practice sessions, be in charge of communications, community and public relations and fire inspections.

“However, about 40 per cent of residents surveyed said they would like us to use social media, like Facebook and Twitter as a way to communicate, so that’s what we’re doing.”

Shewchuk says that as Martensville grows and more people move to Martensville, businesses are following, and the need to keep people informed is increased.

“Not only can we use Facebook for day to day operational information, but we will also be able to communicate information on topics like commercial development and construction projects like, for example, the

new City Hall,” he stated.

Martensville will continue to communicate with residents through the city’s website, by including information in City Utility Bills, and through tools like the Guide to Martensville, the 2013 edition of which was delivered to every household in the city last month. According to the survey, these were some of the top ways residents said they wanted to receive information.

Later this spring, Martensville will hold an open house which will showcase some of the work the City is planning for 2013.

“We’re hoping that residents will take part in the Open House, use our Facebook page, and continue to share their thoughts with us as our City grows and changes,” says Shewchuk.

The City of Martensville is expanding the way it shares information with residents using social media. Last week Martensville launched a Facebook page designed to keep residents more up to date on City operations like recycling, street sweeping and snow removal as well as community events and City program information.

T

he Barn Playhouse is like “the perfect drama camp.”

“I wanted to start something where people of all ages could perform,” explains Vickie Dyck, Artistic Director of the iconic community theatre just off Highway 12 north of Martensville.

Dyck was a drama teacher in Rosthern for nine years. There, she fostered a love of acting in her students, but every few years just as the students became comfortable with putting on performances, they graduated.

Outside of high-school and exclusive acting groups, actors who do not go on to become professionals are often hard-pressed to find places they can perform.

“There are so many talented people of all ages,” says Dyck. “I wanted to create an outlet for them.”

Thus the Barn Playhouse provides a professional setting in which amateur actors may thrive.

Dyck greets me in the ticket office, on May 22. She takes me through the Craft Barn, imbued with a Christmassy scent, presumably left over from last year, into the Theatre Barn where we have a chat.

It’s here, in the heart of the community theatre, that she describes what the Barn Playhouse is all about.

Amateur actors do not have to worry about set, lights and sound, which are handled professionally. Instead, the actors can simplyconcentrate on acting and enjoying themselves.

The ages of the actors match closely the ages of their characters.

Unlike in high school, where a teenager might play a grandfather character, a real-life grandfather may take the role instead.

“The oldest performer we’ve had on stage here was seventy-eight. The youngest performer was just six years old,” Dyck says. “The female lead in our next play used to act with us when she was eight years old.”

The shows chosen are all familyfriendly with an emphasis on rural themes. Typically, the shows are comedies but often they invoke some deep thought as well.

“Some of our plays are more meaningful than others,” Dyck clarifies. “Some of them remind you, as you leave the theatre, what life really is all about.”

The next production to feature at the Barn Playhouse is “KOLD Radio: Whitefish Bay.” Showings run June 12 - 16, and June 19 - 23.

The Barn Playhouse offers community theatre actors a professional setting

“It’s all about celebrating where we live. It’s about celebrating Saskatchewan,” she says.

RELAXING ATMOSPHERE

Before the shows start, the audience has the opportunity to eat and browse in the Crafts Barn, managed by Vickie’s sister, Jane Friesen, which features the works of over 100 artisans. This is part of the cohesive event that makes the Barn Playhouse so successful.

“People come out here from all over the place, often from work, and maybe they bring a lot of stress and frustration with them,” Dyck explains. “You can lose some twenty minutes of the performance. just trying to draw them in.”

For this reason, extra entertainment is provided before the show even begins.

“Dad always said that if you want people to be happy, you’ve got to feed them,” she says with a smile.

“We give people time to wind down and de-stress. Once that’s happened, they can sit down, relaxed, and enjoy the show.”

VARIOUS FUNCTIONS

Open from the middle of May to Christmas, The Barn Playhouse not only offers three theatrical performances and a concert, but intersperses the rest of the time with hosting weddings, business events, and banquets.

Colleen Dyck, Vickie’s other sister and General Manager of the Barn Playhouse, organizes these events.

Vickie Dyck leads me into the Dining Hall, built originally to accommodate pre-show dinners.

“We used to feed guests in the Theatre Barn,” says Dyck. “However, we could only service a limited amount of people that way. We expanded to meet a growing demand.”

The Dining Hall is an airy, welcoming space, a veritable time capsule for bygone years. Shelves on the walls are filled with curiosities from decades past. Photographs document the past three generations of the Dyck family, and showcase the barn’s humble beginnings.

“It cleans up beautifully at Christmas time,” Dyck says.

“We have lots of garlands and lights strung up on the walls. We have a lot of lights at weddings as well. It looks wonderful.”

Moose Jaw - The grade seven students will be travelling to Moose Jaw on Monday, June 17th. We will board the bus at 7:00 a.m. and we hope to be home sometime around four o'clock. Great Plains College Entrance Scholarships range from $500-$5,000, with a minimum of $500 being awarded to every full-time student in a student loan-eligible program. Students must apply by June 30th to be eligible for a scholarship in 2013-14.

Students interested in applying for student awards at SIAST for the 2013-2014 academic year should apply between June 1st and July 15th, 2013. There may be additional awards available during the August 1 to September 15, and the October 1 to November 15 application periods. Individuals must have a SIAST student ID number in order to apply for SIAST Student Awards -- students receive a SIAST student ID number only after they have applied for admission. Awards are then paid out after the commencement of the program.

The CMA High School Scholarship of $1,000 is available to one graduating high school student who is entering an accounting program at the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan. To apply, applicants should send a letter of application to the CMA office by July 31st, 2013, along with a 250 word essay explaining why they have chosen to pursue a career in accounting. The scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest GPA in Grade 12.

Learning Disabilities of Saskatchewan offers two $1,500 scholarships to individuals with learning disabilities pursuing a post-secondary education.

Candidates must have a written diagnosis of a learning disability and be attending a field of study in any institution in Saskatchewan. The applicant must submit a one page explanation on how learning disabilities have affected his or her life, how he or she has learned to work with and compensate for those disabilities and what he or she hopes to do in the future. Completed applications as well as all supporting documents must be received by the Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan postmarked no later than June 30th, 2013.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES Discover your potential with the YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange Program. You’ll travel to another part of Canada for a six-week English/French cultural immersion program that gives you the opportunity to improve language skills, gain work experience in another province, and make new friends. This program begins in late June and is open to students 16 – 17 years old.

WCMS News If you have been by the school site or checked out the WCMS blog, you can tell that progress continues to happen at a significant rate. We are planning to open doors to students in Grades 4-7 for the start of the next school year. One of the focuses of our work recently has been preparing for clear communication and a smooth transition into Warman Community Middle School. We are developing plans for a student assembly, parent information evening and documents that will assist everyone in knowing where to go and what to do on our first day of school. In conjunction with our newly formed School Community Council we are planning for an Open House BBQ in the first weeks of school as we know there is lots of interest and excitement about the new school in the community.

In the past month we have formed our first WCMS School Community Council. More information on our SCC can be found on our blog. We are also preparing to share news of the official WCMS Storm logo with our community.

Warman competes for TSN broadcast

The top 20 communities are chosen by June 30, and on July 8, communities are paired up and pitted head-to-head as people vote over a ten-day period.

The City of Warman has been nominated in the fifth annual Kraft Celebration Tour, in which ten communities receive a $25,000 grant toward a sport facility, as well as hosting a live broadcast by TSN Sports Centre.

“It’s all about helping communities make improvements to their sports facilities,” said Sue Brookes, senior promotions manager with Kraft Canada.

In an interview on Thursday, May 23, Brookes said over the past four years, over 40 communities have benefited from Family Owned & Operated . Halifax Mooseheads capture Memorial Cup Blades bounced in tiebreaker

The Halifax Mooseheads won their first-ever Mastercard Memorial Cup last weekend with a 6-4 win over the Portland Winterhawks in front of a crowd of 11,488 at Credit Union Centre.

It was a great game for the fans and a financial success for the organizing committee and host club, but there was also an air of disappointment for the hometown hosts.

The Saskatoon Blades’ dream of hoisting the Memorial Cup on home ice fell apart after losing to the Portland Winterhawks in the final game of the round robin, and to the London Knights in the tie-breaker.

The match-up against the WHL Champion Winterhawks wasn’t necessarily a “mustwin”, but the game against the OHL Champion Knights was.

The Winterhawks had plenty of firepower, with Brenden Leipsic, Nic Petan and Ty Rattie - the first time three teammates have been 1-2-3 in WHL scoring since 1978-79. Additionally they had the 1-2-3-4 players in plus/minus for the WHL. Also, Portland had the number 1 ranked prospect in the upcoming NHL draft in defenceman Seth Jones.

The Blades, meanwhile, came into the game with confidence after surprising performances earlier in the tournament, and relying heavily on goalie Andrey Makarov. But after playing two periods of competitive hockey, the Winterhawks made the most of their opportunities in the third and came away with a 4-2 win.

The loss to Portland meant the Blades played London in the tie-breaker game. They were really going against the trend if they hoped to advance to the semi-finals as no team in the tournament had won the second game when they had to play on consecutive nights. Halifax

had lost to Saskatoon 5-2 and London had lost to Halifax 9-2 when having to play two days in a row. It didn’t help that Blades’ defenseman Dalton Thrower received a suspension.

The Knights came out flying and grabbed an early lead.

They built on that and by the third period were ahead 6-0.

Makarov was replaced between the pipes by backup Alex Moodie and Saskatoon finally got on the board with a late goal by Nathan Burns. But it was too little, too late, and the host team was eliminated from the tournament.

Blades Coach Lorne Molleken felt the team had run out of gas.

Responding to a question on the Blades season, Molleken said: “It was an interesting year.

We as a team faced a lot of adversity, a lot of different pressures. But certainly as we reflect back on this year it was a tremendous learning experience for all of us. And we have lots of things to be extremely proud of. The way we played

The campaign solicited reservations only, and did not require potential patrons to put up any funds.

The campaign was launched in early February by committee members Jaymon Hill, Chad Anderson, Darren Fahl and Ryley Anderson. The goal was to generate community support for the expansion franchise. The committee had hoped to put a team on the ice for the 2014-15 SJHL season.

The SJHL Board of Governors is slated to meet in Nipawin May 31 to June 3. The league requires a fee of $150,000 to enter a team in the league. Bill Chow, President of the SJHL, indicated in an interview in early February that the league was interested in putting a team in Warman, but also noted any potential application would be judged on its own merits, and there were no guarantees it would have been accepted.

Warman won’t be getting a Sskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team anytime soon.

The campaign to bring a Junior A hockey franchise to the community came to an end last week. Organizers indicated they were unable to generate enough commitments for season tickets and corporate sponsorships to guarantee sucess.

In an e-mail to campaign supporters dated May 21, the campaign organizing committee revealed they were unable to reach their target, and have stopped taking season ticket and advertising reservations.

“The main purpose of this campaign was to help determime if there is a sufficient level of support and interest within the community and surrounding area to sustain a Junior A hockey team in Warman for many years to come,” stated the e-mail from the committee. “We achieved approximately 60 per cent of our season ticket reservation goal, and approximately 50 per cent of our advertising reservation goal.

Molleken had high praise for the efforts of Josh Nicholls who finished tied for the lead in goals with four in the round robin games. Nicholls also added two assists which placed him tied for third in total points.

“Nicholls was tremendous for us,” he said. “Obviously he was with us right from his bantam draft year. He is a proud Blade and I thought this tournament he played extremely well for us.

MADD ATMs in provincial liquor stores Automated teller machines (ATMs) in support of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are now in all seven Regina liquor stores.

“Getting behind the wheel while impaired is the wrong decision and one that too often leads to tragedy for families,” Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority Donna Harpauer said. “Having these ATMs in SLGA’s Regina liquor stores is a great way to help MADD spread that message.”

All fees collected from the ATMs will be used

by MADD to support local chapter activities.

“The funds we generate through these ATMs will help raise awareness in the province about the danger of driving impaired,” MADD Canada CEO Andrew Murie said. “We appreciate SLGA’s support and commitment to promote the responsible use of beverage alcohol through this initiative.”

SLGA and MADD are partners in the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) program. RID encourages people to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver.

Electric car owners in the Prairies are getting a charge from Peavey Mart stores. The retail chain decided to install charging stations at all 29 store locations and has four in operation at Red Deer, Regina, Medicine Hat and Wetaskiwin.

“Charging is free for electric car owners,” says Doug Anderson, president of Peavey Industries.

“We expect most people will charge for an hour or so.”

The distance a car can drive on a single charge depends on the battery, the car and the charging unit. Red Deer is a convenient stop for people traveling on the QE2 corridor.

Canada is home to the world’s longest charging network, completed last year by Saskatchewan-based Sun Country Highway, who installed electric chargers along the Trans-Canada highway. Sun Country Highway President Kent Rathwell says Peavey Mart is adding to that capacity.

“Electric cars are a movement that the average person can partake in” says Rathwell, “and Peavey Mart is helping provide options for the average person by filling in charging capacity across most of Alberta and Saskatchewan. By assisting Canadians to lower their emissions, it allows Canada to continue to develop its resource sector while lowering emissions is good for all Canadians and Peavey is trying to do their part.”

“We’re extending the reach north,” confirms Anderson. “Soon people will be able to travel from Dawson Creek, BC to Estevan, Saskatchewan and hook in to the Trans-Canada network.”

“The number of electric cars and charging stations is clearly growing,” says Anderson. “By adding charging stations, we’re increasing the capacity for people and helping make electric cars more of an option.”

Hockey in May brings mixed results, fan attitude After eight periods of play, the Saskatoon Blades were on the cusp of authoring a story similar to the last time they hosted the CHL championship tournament.

Unfortunately, the final four periods the Bridge City Bunch played were far too reminiscent of the way things have gone for the Western Hockey League’s senior franchise in recent years.

Despite being forced through a 51-day shutdown from actual game action – after being unceremoniously ousted from the playoffs in the minimum four games by Medicine Hat – the Blades proved themselves capable of competing with the best the CHL had to offer. Saskatoon took the Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights to the wire before losing the opening game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup 3-2. They, then, pulled off the event’s lone upset, shocking the Quebec Major Junior Hock-

ment history and the per game average of almost 9,200 was the fifth best.

“It’s a little unfortunate that the camera angle just shows those first few rows (of seats) which people don’t like to sit in,” said tournament co-chair and Blades’ president Jack Brodsky. “I certainly don’t like to sit there, but we tried to get people down there and they’re moving up into the upper level because it’s a better angle (to watch the game).

“The crowds have been great. We’ve got a big building.

To me, the glass is two-thirds full and not a third empty and I think, with the size of building we have, the attendance has been outstanding.”

In the end, Halifax captured the MasterCard Memorial Cup, outscoring Portland 6-4 in the Sunday final. As for the Saskatoon Blades, a rebuilding process begins in earnest with several personnel moves expected, both on and off the

If the Bridge City Bunch could win, they would advance straight to the final – as the 1989 Blades did when they hosted the Memorial Cup at Saskatchewan Place.

But, while 9,239 fans at Credit Union Centre hoped for the best, they got the expected worst as the Winterhawks scored three consecutive goals on the way to a 4-2 triumph.

Saskatoon followed that up the next night with a weak 6-1 loss at the hands of London in the

third place tie-breaker game.

“We ran out of gas, plain and simple.” explained Blades’ General Manager and Head Coach Lorne Molleken following the team’s elimination.

“The mistakes that we made, London took full advantage (in the tie-breaker game).”

The attendance figure, in an almost 15,000-seat facility, was considered a disappointment by visiting media and outsiders at home. But, when all the ticket sales were added up, the 2013 Saskatoon edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup drew 82,500 fans for nine games. The total attendance was the fourth best in tourna-

Radisson Fire were already providing emergency care to the driver, the sole occupant of a 2011 Dodge Ram truck.

STARS ambulance was dispatched to the scene; however MD Ambulance personnel pronounced the 45 year old male driver from Martensville dead at the scene. So far, the investigation has revealed the Dodge truck was driving eastbound, left the highway and struck an approach in the center median which caused it to roll. The

Albert Street in Radisson for a complaint of vandalism. Police attended and were advised by the home owner that sometime around 6:00 p.m. on May 21 the window of his residence’s front door was broken by an unknown culprit. There are no suspects at this time, police are investigating.

MARTENSVILLE THEFTS

During the overnight hours of May 24th, several vehicles were unlawfully entered in

Martensville in the MacCormack Ranch, Hamm Terrace, Friesen Cove, Sandy Rise and 2nd Avenue neighborhoods.

Numerous unlocked vehicles were entered and various personal items were stolen. Police are again reminding the public to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in plain view.

VEHICLES STOLEN

On May 25, at 9:00 a.m. police were called to a residence in Langham where a 2013 Dodge car was stolen from a garage.

The car was later recovered in Saskatoon by the Saskatoon PS. At 11:00 a.m. police were then called to a residence in Warman where a 2003 Mitsubishi car was stolen. It was also recovered. Both investigations are continuing.

PIKE LAKE B&E

On May 26, RCMP were called to a break and enter at a cabin in Pike Lake. The culprits pried open an entrance door and smashed a window to enter the cabin. Inside, a small quantity of alcohol, money, two portable communication devices and two soft air pistols were stolen. Police continue to investigate.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

On May 25, at 04:30 a.m. police received a call from a resident of Langham that he found two teenage males inside a family member’s garage. The two youths ran away when they were discovered, and were not caught. It does not appear the youths took anything. Police continue to investigate.

EQUIPMENT DAMAGED

On May 26 at 7:10 a.m. police received a call of a Ford truck stuck in a field along with two pieces of heavy duty equipment off Highway 14, near Grandora. It was determined the heavy equipment was unlawfully taken from a nearby business and used in an attempt to pull out the truck. There was damage to the heavy equipment and a portion of the CP rail tracks. Police have spoken to the driver of the truck and are continuing their investigation, along with the CP Police.

Vital Signs Role of paramedics evolving as health care becomes more community-oriented

Over two-thirds of Saskatchewan residents are confident that emergency paramedics will provide them with the best possible care in the shortest possible time.

And given a choice of seeing a physician at a hospital for a minor medical emergency, or being treated at home by a paramedic, 74 per cent of Ssakatchewan people are likely to choose the paramedic.

The results of a provincewide survey of 800 Saskatchewan residents last summer showed that paramedics are seen as the most respected health care profession in the province. In fact, they rate on a par with both doctors and nurses, with 89 per cent of respondents saying paramedics are “very important” to the health care system.

The survey was commissioned by the Saskatchewan Emergency Medical Services Association (SEMSA) and conducted in the summer of 2012.

The results of the survey were released at a news conference at MD Ambulance headquarters in Saskatoon on Wednesday, May 22, during Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week.

Steve Skoworodko, past president of SEMSA, said the survey results “speak well of how good a job our paramedics do out in the streets, in emergency departments, and in their new roles of community paramedicine.”

Skoworodko said 67 per cent of people strongly support paramedics having a larger role in rural Saskatchewan communities, particularly in collaborative emergency medical centres where paramedics work alongside a Registered Nurse, with a physician available by phone.

He said younger people are

particularly accepting about the evolving role of paramedics, and noted that changing technology allows EMTs to be in close contact with physicians and hospital emergency room staff, while treating patients with advanced lifesaving equipment in the field.

“The last five years have seen a tremendous change in the scope of what paramedics are able to do,” he said.

“Our role trditionally has been dealng with acute injuries, but now we’re learning to do more of the long-term kind of care, and that comes out of the partnerships we have with home care and nurses.”

“It’s all part of the chain,” he said.

“We are always upgrading our skills through constant training,” said Ruhr. “And every call is also a learning experience.”

Almost all respondents have at least some respect for paramedics with

73% saying they have a lot of respect. Only firefighters are respected a lot by more residents of Saskatchewan (84%).

Paramedics are more respected than teachers, police officers, military officers, and scientists. * Paramedics are considered very important to the province’s health care system. Nine in ten respondents (89%) believed that paramedics are very important to Saskathcewan’s health care system, similar to doctors (89%) and nurses (88%). Paramedics are clearly viewed as key actors in the province’s health care system. * Forty-nine per cent support the province covering the entire cost of ambulance services; 40% oppose it. *Seven in ten residents support increasing the role of paramedics to deliver front line health care in areas without easy access to a hospital. Support was consistent across age groups and among residents living in different size communities., *Seventy-six per cent of survey respondents would strongly or somewhat support giving parramedics a larger role in providing helath care in rural Saskatchewan communities. 72% of respondetns living in rural communities said they supported this proposal. * Seven in ten respondents support allowing paramedics to treat patients in their homes if their injuries or illnesses do not require transportation to a hospital.
