Ford trucks targeted by thieves Vehicles in Langham, Olser reported stolen Tuesday morning Warman RCMP are on the lookout for a pair of stolen trucks and are warning owners of vehicles – particularly Ford F350s – to take extra precuations. During the early morning hours of July 30, thieves were active in Martensville, Langham and Osler. Several vehicles in Martensville were entered and the contents gone through in an attempt to locate valuables. In addition to these thefts, two Ford F350 trucks were stolen and one attempt was made to steal a third. The first truck – a black 2006 Ford F350 – was stolen from 1st Street East in Langham. That truck is a 4x4 crew cab, long box. A second Ford F350 was stolen from 1st Street in Osler and is described as a 2006 F350 Super Duty, blue in colour, crew cab, diesel engine, with an “I” shaped slip tank in the box. A third F350 truck was en-

tered and an attempt to defeat the ignition was made, but was unsuccessful. Thieves also attempted to steal a Ford Mustang by drilling a hole into the door, but were unsuccessful at gaining entry. It is believed that thieves have discovered a vulnerability with the Ford F350 truck and are exploiting it. Owners of similar type vehicles are en-

couraged to utilize a secondary means of protection such as steering wheel lock or other similar device. Please consult the manufacturer or a dealer for recommendations. Anyone who knows the location of these vehicles or who may be responsible for the thefts is asked to call the Warman RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Police looking for missing person RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Arnoldo Rey who was last known to be living in Krydor, SK. Rey was born and raised in Chile but has lived in Canada since the 1980s. Police say Rey has not been seen by, nor has he contacted his family in Chile or Canada since November 2012. It is not out of character for Rey to travel for extended periods of time but he usually keeps in contact with his family during his travels. Rey speaks fluent Spanish and has a heavy Spanish Accent, making it difficult to un-

derstand him at times. He has brown eyes, is 5’9” tall and weighs approximately 165 lbs. Anyone Arnoldo Rey with information regarding the disappearance of this person is asked to contact the Saskatoon RCMP Major Crime Unit at (306) 975-5748 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

Osler future growth plan includes local food corridor By TERRY PUGH

The Town of Osler’s new Official Community Plan (OCP) includes a “local community food node” that features a farmers’ market and local food processing facilities within the town limits. The local food corridor is zoned as “Community Centre Commercial” and is located on Township Road 393 (VCA Road). It is an innovative idea that is being copied by other Saskatchewan mumicipalities, according to Jim Walters, a planner with Crosby Hanna,

Hanging Gardens greenhouse, there’s Pine View Farms, and a local food miller. It’s a happening place for promoting local food.” Walters said the City of Yorkton and the RM of Lakeland are looking at Osler’s OCP as a model. “Lots of communities are doing this, but this is the first I know of in this area,” said Walters. “I can see other communities copying it, because it’s a good idea. Thre is a trend toward local food, and providing for a speciallyzoned commercial strip that promotes local food is a very future-oriented direction for the town to take.”

“It’s a very progressive idea and it is actually building on what is already in place in terms of small-scale family-farm food processing and farmers’ markets.” Jim Walters, Crosby Hanna Consulting

the consulting firm that prepared Osler’s new OCP. “It’s a very progressive idea, and it is actually building on what is already in place in terms of small-scale family-farm food processing and farmers’ markets,” said Walters. “There is the

The document lays out the municipality’s intentions for residential, commercial, and industrial land use, as well as plans for future amenities and community services. Two public meetings on the OCP gathered input and feedback from residents, with the most recent one having been held last March. The well-attended open houses on the OCP may have accounted for the

lack of residents at the public hearing last week. “I’m not totally shocked that no one is here,” said Walters. “Lots of people came to the open houses. For the most part, residents are very positive toward the proposals. This isn’t just a housekeeping change. You folks are leading the pack.” The new OCP outlines policies supporting inter-municipal cooperation with the RM of Corman Park in areas of mutual interest and future annexation. All land within the current boundaries of the Town of Osler, as well as the areas identified on the

Two more programs at Great Plains College are being expanded as the college continues evolving to meet industry demand in western Saskatchewan. The capacity for Fourth Class Power Engineering has been doubled at Swift Current Campus, meaning the program can now accommodate up to 24 students when it begins in September. And a second class of Electrician students is expected to start at Swift Current Campus in February, immediately following the conclusion of the originally-scheduled program which begins in September. This news follows the May announce-

town’s Future Land Use Concept map are included in the OCP.

EXPANSION TO WEST

If the current pace of growth continues, the town is looking to expand to the west. Discussions with landowners in the area have been ongoing for the past several months. There is also some room for mixed use development in lands on the north side of Osler. Originally, that land had been identified as a possible industrial park, but consultations with residents and landowners resulted in a change.

Corman Park Police issues alert to dog owners Submitted by

FLOODING CONCERNS

SGT. JOHN GARNET

tions please pick up a copy of the hunting synopsis at any sporting goods store or online. If you own land and do not want hunters, you must post the land to keep hunters (and quads, snow machines, and trespassers) off. If your signage is old and faded (or shot full of holes) replace it. Do that soon as some hunters are already out checking out good spots. Most hunters are responsible but every year we deal with a few who hunt too close to occupied buildings, from vehicles, or commit other violations. As the landowner you must know your rights and obligations. You can call either Corman Park Police or the RCMP if you find people in violation of regulations.

Flooding is still a major concern in many areas of the RM. Landowners are not allowed to block culverts, cut roads, or divert the water flow without the permission of the RM and the Watershed Authority. Drivers are warned that when the RM puts up a barricade to prevent traffic on a road it is an offence to remove the barricade or drive around it. To obtain more information about road conditions or to report a damaged barricade, call the RM office (306) 242-9303.

Corman Park Police Service

This spring I asked the public to please keep their dogs at home – for public safety and also for the safety of the animal. Since that article there have been five dogs shot, legally, in the RM because they were caught attacking and killing both calves, sheep and deer on different instances. Dogs also wander into traffic and get hit by vehicles. The RM bylaw prohibits stray dogs – if they are impounded we take them to the SPCA and fines and fees are incurred. If you catch a stray dog please call us at (306) 242-8808.

HUNTING SEASON

Hunting season starts in a little over a month. If you are new to the RM or unfamiliar with hunting regula-

MIND YOUR FIRES

We have been very fortunate this year with fewer grass fires. Remember, if you are burning rubbish, straw or other material you must call the Controlled Burn Hotline at 1-866-822-8522 and report your burn before you start. If you are new to the RM please be advised that you should contact your home insurer and purchase extra insurance to cover the cost of volunteer fire fighting services.

QUAD SAFELY

Most of us love quadding. Play safe and wear safety equipment – it is the law! We have been charging people for various offences including failing to wear helmets. Remember, you are not allowed to ride on private land without permission. Please obtain the SGI pamphlet on All Terrain Vehicles for complete information on regulations.

raised and trained registered Tennessee walking horses for several years at the Lazy T Ranch. With some 53 combined years of experience under their belts, the couple thought it would be a good idea to construct something “uniquely different”. The initial planning began two years ago and while the arena was open for business as of July 1, 2013, construction is still ongoing. “We’re in the final stages of completion right now,” said Terrece. “The building is up and the riding arena is being used. The new barn has yet to be completed.” The Lazy T Indoor Riding Arena is located one mile south of Highway 14 and the Saskatoon Livestock Yards. “You can see us for miles,” explained Terrece, “it’s a very

To anyone who owns a horse and loves riding and working with their trusty equine friends, the Lazy T Ranch’s newly constructed indoor riding arena will definitely fit the bill for the serious and casual rider alike. “We have a very relaxing atmosphere out here at the ranch,” said Bruce Terrece, owner of the ranch and riding arena located near Vanscoy. The ranch’s new facilities include a year-round indoor riding arena with outdoor riding paddocks available. In the very near future, a new barn will be able to accommodate 45 horses in box stalls along with additional outdoor paddocks with shelters to accommodate another 20 horses. Five ways to stop the Abolish the Senate...and then what? next Senate expense scandal from happening The thing that seems a good idea at the time is often the thing we should have thought more about before we went ahead and did it.

By GREGORY THOMAS

Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation

COMMENTARY

Take a stand for more accountability from MPs and Senators, sign our online petition here Now that the RCMP are investigating, it’s pretty much guaranteed that the Senate expense scandal will have a devastating impact on the people involved. But it’s Canada that has suffered the worst damage in this scandal. Thankfully it’s repairable. When MPs return from their summer break, they need to take five basic steps to restore public confidence in Parliament. First, they need to submit themselves to the authority of the Auditor General of Canada. In 2012, after public outcry forced Parliamentarians to finally agree to let the AG examine the operations of the House and the Senate, they sneakily handed him a blindfold before they let him on the premises. In his report, the Auditor General conceded that “we did not audit the Board of Internal Economy or Members of Parliament and the work performed by Members’ employees or consultants in their Ottawa or constituency offices. Nor did we audit the procurement of professional services contracts awarded by individual Members.” Ok… well what did they audit them? The auditors reviewed just 264 of 85,000 financial transactions processed that year. In the wake of the expense scandal, Senator Marjory LeBreton, on behalf of the Senate, asked the Auditor General to examine “every taxpayer dollar” the Senate spends. But when Liberal leader Justin Trudeau asked the House simply to approve drawing up guidelines for the Auditor General to look at MPs spending, his motion was shot down – by the NDP, no less. Second, MPs and Senators need to post their expense claims and the supporting receipts online. Alberta MLAs are doing it, so are Toronto city councillors. The technology for posting documents on the internet was developed 20 years ago. Third, MPs and Senators need to make themselves subject to federal Access to Information law. Currently, Canadians can’t compel federal politicians to produce financial documents, such as expense claims, under the Access to Information and Privacy Act. This is critical: access requests revealed former Conservative minister Bev Oda’s wild spending in London, including her taxpayer-funded $16 glass of orange juice. Cabinet ministers and their expenses are subject to disclosure under the access law. MPs and Senators and their expenses are not. Perhaps that’s one reason why it took seven years for the RCMP to lay charges against former Liberal MP Joe Fontana. The Mounties are alleging that Fontana paid for his son’s wedding reception with a government cheque. If MPs and Senators were subject to access to information laws, Joe Fontana and Mike Duffy would have been forced to answer awkward questions from reporters and opposition leaders long before the RCMP showed up. Step four, critical in a democracy: empower Canadians to recall crooked politicians, the way they can in British Columbia, and boot them from office. Step five, cancel the pension entitlements for politicians convicted in court of stealing from the public, the way they have in Nova Scotia. Canadians shouldn’t have to put up with the spectacle of former Senator Raymond Lavigne, collecting his Parliamentary pension while he sits in jail for submitting fraudulent expense claims. Conservative MP John Williamson has tabled a private member’s bill to eliminate pensions for political fraudsters. Prime Minister Harper would be well served to steal this private member’s bill and push it as a government bill. Undoubtedly, there are more than five things Parliament could do to ensure future scandals are kept to a minimum, but they need to start somewhere. When Parliament resumes this fall, these five steps should be top of the agenda.

Provincial Politics

Abolishing the Senate sure seems like a great idea to Premier Brad Wall right now. Frankly, it seems like a great idea to most everyone…including most everyone in rural Saskatchewan. But – believe it or not – it’s the interests of people living in places like rural Saskatchewan that Wall must consider in his push to abolish the Senate. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m as appalled as anyone by the antics of the Liberal and Conservative hacks in the Senate who see no reason to represent the province from which they were appointed. Their first loyalty is to their political mas-

will eventually agree to do away with this $100-million-ayear patronage waste, will abolishing the Senate really change all that much? Can premiers, as Wall suggests, always effectively represent regional interests to the federal government? For Wall – a premier from a small province far away from Ottawa – that’s a tougher question to answer. Of course, any provincial premier will argue that he or she speaks for his or her province. But under Stephen Harper’s administration in which this Prime Minister has only met once with the premiers, collectively, it’s not always been easy to present the case for regional interests. Harper has moved arbitrarily on federal transfers and a health accord without much consultation with the premiers or consideration of regional interests. And he is hardly the first prime minister to place the federal government’s interest ahead of the interests of the regions. (See: ending commu-

nity pastures; the Indian Head tree farm.) So the question perhaps isn’t so much whether today’s Senate does its job. We all know it really doesn’t. The real question is: How will doing away with the Senate actually improve representation of regional interests? After all, premiers don’t review federal laws. If Harper or any future Liberal or NDP prime minister chooses not to listen to the premiers in advance, might it be still be in our interests to have a reformed, elected Senate representing the regional interests of places like rural Saskatchewan? Maybe Wall and most everyone else is instinctively right. Maybe the Senate can’t be reformed, meaning that we might as well get rid of it because it’s virtually useless. But maybe we need our own moment of sober second thought before we completely do away with any chance of ever again having a true upper house of sober second thought.

Alcohol and boating a dangerous combination Drinking and boating accounts for approximately 40 per cent of boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways. To raise awareness and reduce alcohol related deaths, the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) is launching Operation Dry Water, an initiative to discourage this dangerous practice. With the summer boating season in high gear, the August long weekend is the perfect time to remind Canadian boaters about the risks of drinking and boating. Combined with sun, wind, waves and the rocking motion of the boat, the effects of alcohol on the water can be greatly increased. “The CSBC would like, through this initiative, to raise attention to the problem of boating under the influence and to

ters that appointed them. It is precisely for that reason that people seem so angry over Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin claiming travel expenses for trips home to provinces they haven’t lived in for decades. And as an un-elected body, what real democratic authority does the Senate have to question anyone’s law, anyway? These are but a few of the reasons why Wall was pushing hard for Senate abolition prior to the premiers’ annual gathering at Niagara-on-the-Lake. “There are a number of different options to pursue,” Wall told Joe Couture of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix. “The principle’s abolition. That will be the underlying principle. It’s just, what’s the best way to advance that cause? We’d like to try to do it in a way that might have a bit of traction outside of our borders. It’s pretty important for me to canvass my colleagues here at the Council of the Federation (premier’s meeting).” But even in the unlikely circumstance that the premiers

remind boaters not to drink and boat,” stated Jean Murray, Chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Operation Dry Water will focus on the potential risks of drinking and boating, and remedies that are currently in place to discourage it. Federal statutes dictate that, whether or not your craft is motorized, you can be charged with Impaired Operation of a vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if your blood alcohol level exceeds the .08 threshold. This means you can be charged even if you are impaired while operating a canoe and a judge is able to, upon conviction, suspend your boating privileges. But that’s not all; it can get worse. Some provinces have enacted legislation where drinking

and boating can affect your automobile driving privileges. In Ontario for example, Bill 209 amended the Highway Traffic Act to also apply to “anyone operating or having the care or control of a vessel”. As such, anyone found boating with a blood alcohol level above .05, faces an on-the-spot automobile drivers’ license suspension. Should the person’s blood alcohol concentration exceed .08, upon conviction, an addition-

al suspension of up to one year can be applied. Operation Dry Water is aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities on the water while fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use while boating. The end goal? To achieve safer and more enjoyable recreational boating. Jean Murray Chair Canadian Safe Boating Council

Plots in new Warman, Martensville cemeteries available this fall By EMMA HENLEY emma@ccgazette.ca

The current Warman Cemetery is close to being full, having already interred approximately 1,000 people, with only 150 plots left. However, the city says there is no cause to worry or panic. The bylaw for the new Warman Memorial Gardens – which is close to completion – will be going to council in a month. “Once the bylaw is passed, we can start pre-selling lots,” said Warman Cemetery Clerk Kietha Swenson. “People won’t be able to choose which lots they will get, but they will get whichever lot is appropriate for their requests, whether they wish to purchase a lot for a husband and wife, or a parent and child, and so on.” While the bylaw is still being finalized, Swenson did confirm that the Memorial Gardens will

have different rules and regulations than the current cemetery on Central Street West. “We’ve established different rules, such as those to do with headstones, in order to meet safety standards and make maintenance easier,” said Swenson. The Memorial Gardens are still in the design phase and the first stage of the new cemetery is fenced in but there is still a lot of work to be done, according to Swenson. Warman Memorial Gardens is located at the southwest corner of the city, close to South Railway Street and the yet-tobe-developed Reddekopp Crescent.

MARTENSVILLE CEMETERY The Martensville Cemetery, meanwhile, is nearing the end of the initial phase of construction.

“It’s a project that has been many years in the making,” said Dave Bosch, director of Recreation and Community Services. “We’ve had to work to acquire the land.” There will be over 2,000 lots available for casket burials and approximately 500 lots for cremation interments. The cemetery will contain a total of 2,369 burial lots, but will be able to sustain the interment of 3,994 people. “This is because municipal bylaws permit certain lots to contain not only a casket, but also a cremation urn,” explained Bosch. The first phase of the Martensville Cemetery – located close to Ranch Ehrlo on Twp. Road 384 off Rge. Rd. 3052 – is expected to be completed by October of this year, but won’t be ready for operation until 2014.

Construction crews were busy last week as work got underway on changes to the Highway 11 intersection at Warman. The project is estimated to cost $2.5 million. The work, which is expected to be completed by September, includes the addition of acceleration lanes north and south exiting Warman, a turning lane toward the Clarkboro Ferry and an extended turning lane for traffic turning left into Warman from the northbound lanes to improve safety and traffic flow through the area. Motorists are reminded that traffic will be limited to one lane and reduced speeds are required. Drivers should expect some delays.

Free flight at Forestry Farm Story and photos by WAYNE SHIELS essenceofsask@gmail.com

The Canadian Raptor Conservancy have been demonstrating with their collection of trained raptors at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo as part of the facility’s 100th anniversary. Trained for free-flight, audience members are able to see birds such as a bald eagle, turkey vulture, barn owl, great horned owl, red tail hawk, the Lanner falcon from Europe and Africa as well as the Harris hawk from Central and South America. Among some of the fun facts provided by the handlers/ interpreters: • a great horned owl does not have a sense of smell and skunks are its favourite food • a turkey vulture has such good sense of smell it can detect carrion from up to six kilometres in the distance • bald eagles have tremendous vision and can spot a rabbit as far away as three kilometres • barn owl ears are higher on one side lower on the other side to give it “3-D hearing” Handlers Glen Purves (below right) and Sean Yokoyama (left) provide an educational commentary on each species during the shows which run until August 4. The shows are free to attend with park admission.

Team Sask. raring to go to Bantam Lacrosse Nationals By EMMA HENLEY emma@ccgazette.ca

The 2013 Bantam Lacrosse Nationals are fast approaching, and Team Saskatchewan were hard at work in the Kinsmen Park Arena over the weekend. The squad battled in several exhibition games Saturday against various Bantam- and Midget-aged teams from within Saskatoon, in preparation for Nationals in Winnipeg from August 2-10. “In these games today, we get to work on our power play and work out some line combinations and see which kids we want playing together,” said Darcy Deck, coach for Team Saskatchewan. Seven teams will be competing in this year’s Nationals. Team Saskatchewan will go up against teams representing Ontario, B.C. Quebec, Nova Scotia and Manitoba, as well as Team Iroquois. Deck expects Ontario, B.C. and Team Iroquois to be the top three teams at the games. “Alberta’s not competing this year, so we’re hoping we can

sneak in as the fourth-place team,” said Deck with a chuckle. There will be 20 boys participating with Team Saskatchewan, including 11 from Regina, three from Moose Jaw and six from Saskatoon. “They’re pretty excited,” said Deck. Last year, Team Saskatchewan did not have a Bantam team at Nationals but Deck said the team does have experience. “We did have five guys go to Pee Wee Nationals who are on the team this year. Another half a dozen or so played in Pee Wee Nationals the year before. So we’ve got a bit of experience there, which is good.” Brenden Senko and Parker Noln-Ens, both of Warman, said they were excited for the upcoming games. “I’m kind of nervous for Ontario because they have so many more people to choose from,” said Senko. “But, I hope we can maybe win.” “It’ll be fun,” added NolnEns. “Ontario are good and they’ve won a lot but we’ve trained pretty good.”

MAN AND MACHINE RIP UP RIVER The South Saskatchewan River provided the backdrop for a weekend celebration on the water over the weekend as competitors and spectators took in the third annual Dakota Dunes Casino River Lights Festival. Ryan Turner of Lloydminster (top photo) pulled off several tricks, including this 360-degree flip, during the freestyle competition while Warman’s Kyle Kehoe (right) competed in the Beginner Class at the Watercross Nationals. Despite the paddleboard races being cancelled due to the excessive wind on Saturday, there were plenty of other attractions for the crowds including shoreline light displays from the BHP Billiton Enchanted Forest, dinner cruises and entertainment on the Prairie Lily river boat, First Nations canoe and dance presentations, and river regatta and races organized by the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club and the Saskatoon Rowing Club. Coben repeats as Saskatchewan Senior Men’s golf champion Colin Coben of Delisle captured the provincial Senior Men’s golf championship last week at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. It was the second straight Senior Men’s title for the 58-year old Coben, who carded a 1-under-par 71 in his final round on Wednesday, July 24. He entered

the round trailing Paul Grimes by two strokes but rebounded to overtake the leader for a fivestroke victory. With a field of 101 golfers in the tournament, Coben told reporters it was an extra special win because it was on his home course. He’s been a member of the SGCC for the past 10

years. Coben and Grimes, along with Chuck Hainsworth and George Janson, will make up the Saskatchewan Senior Men’s golf team that will compete in the Canadian national championship at the Briars Golf Club Sutton West Ontario from August 27 to 30.

Fitness Tips

Help for HUNCHED-OVER backs

Have you ever had a hard time raising your arms to wash your hair, put dishes away, or put on a sweatshirt? You may be suffering from excessive thoracic kyphosis (ETK). ETK is a disproportionate forward-rounding or curvature of the middle and upper back, also known as the thoracic spine. This excessive rounding of the middle and upper back can affect the function of your breathing, and limit movement of your shoulders, spine, and arms. So what causes ETK, and what can you do about it? Possible Causes of ETK The most common causes include the following: • musculoskeletal compensations • environmental factors • exercise/activity choices • psychological stressors Musculoskeletal imbalances anywhere in the body can cause ETK. Moving the head forward from its neutral position to focus on a small object, like a handheld device, causes the spine to round forward in order to help hold up the head. This is like having a large fish on the end of a flexible fishing rod. The rod bends forward to accommodate the extra weight. If done over time this forward head position can lead to ETK. Prolonged periods of keeping the spine in this position, such as during bike riding and/or indoor cycling, martial arts, freestyle swimming, or gardening, can all contribute to ETK. Corrective Exercise There are several things that you can do to alleviate ETK. For example, corrective exercises and self-massage are very effective. If you think you are suffering from ETK, try the following exercises or consider working with a certified specialist who can help with designing a exercise program to improve posture. Exercise 1: Two Tennis Balls on Upper Back...This exercise helps to straighten the upper- and middle-back regions. Lie on the floor on your back with your knees bent. Place a tennis ball on either side of your spine in line with the bottom of your shoulder blades. Use a large pillow to support your head. Bring your arms across your chest and hug yourself. Find the sore spot on your back and maintain pressure on it until it releases (10 - 15 seconds). Move the balls to another sore spot by scooting your butt and body down so the balls roll up your spine. Bring the pillow along with you each time. Spend about 2 - 3 minutes each day on that entire area. Exercise 2: Tennis Ball on Abdominals...This exercise helps to release tension in the abdominals and hip flexor muscles to help loosen up your hips and lower-back. Lie on the floor on your belly. Place the tennis ball on your stomach, just below the rib cage to the right of your belly button. Find the sore spot and apply continuous pressure until it releases (5 - 10 seconds). Then move the ball to the next spot, scooting your body up so the ball moves down. Do this all along your abdomen, past your bellybutton, to the top of your hips. Repeat process on left side. Do each side for about 1 - 2 minutes.

A well-deserved break for top team in CFL The Saskatchewan Roughriders are a CFL-best 5-0 after Saturday’s 32-20 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Guelph, ON and not surprisingly, you’re starting to hear the comments all across Saskatchewan. “Is this the best Roughrider team of all time?” or “Has a CFL team ever gone undefeated?” I can’t answer the first one, although it’s a great question. As for the second inquiry, the 1948 Calgary Stampeders went 12-0 in their twelve-game schedule and finished the season off with a 12-7 victory over the Ottawa Rough Riders in Grey Cup XXXVIII in Toronto. But really, although the Riders are 5-0, it has to be a little early to discuss a perfect season isn’t it? Of course it is, but it sure is fun! So too is watching the Green & White as they’ve been pulverizing teams in the early stages of this 2013 season. In

RIDER INSIDER ROD PEDERSEN

the just-completed home-andhome series with the Ticats, the Roughriders outscored them 6920. As one player put it to me on the flight home, “We’re kicking the crap out of everybody”. They are and they’re also showing no signs of slowing down. What better example is there than to have back-up quarterback Drew Willy come in and rip apart the Ticats’ defense for three deep touchdown passes in the second quarter to Geroy Simon, Chris Getzlaf and Weston Dressler? Willy got the start in place of the injured Darian Durant (foot) and, despite some mi-

nor early hiccups, put the same amount of points on the board we’re accustomed to seeing from Darian. “Drew Willy did an excellent job,” said Rider head coach Corey Chamblin upon the team’s return to Regina. “That’s his third start and you could see that there’s improvement from the other times he started last year. Good job for him this year.” And Chamblin was taking nothing for granted after the team’s Week 5 victory. His club faced a lot of distractions on that road trip – some were evident but others weren’t – and the team still survived and thrived.

“You’re on the road, in a different environment, and a place you haven’t been before so that’s always tough” Chamblin explained. “But we finished pretty smooth. They were a focused bunch. You could see in warm-ups that Hamilton was ready to go and they’d be ready to play. Once we found out what they were doing, we were ready to roll.” Indeed, the Riders rode. And now they’re headed home for a break as a bye week has presented itself in the schedule and we won’t see Canada’s Team on the field until Friday, August 9 in a battle for first-place in the CFL West. You’d think the Riders would

prefer to keep the pedal to the metal and not take any time off but Chamblin quickly assured us that’s not the case. “The bye is a great thing because we need some rest,” the coach offered. “It’s a good thing. I’ll be playing with my kids and my family’s in town for three days and then we’ll get back to work. And he left his players with this message. “Be smart. Be smart. Take care of yourselves and come back better than when you left.” And then the assault on the perfect season will continue. However, perhaps we won’t talk about it again until Week 17.

Plan to rehabilitate M1 canal announced Infrastructure feeds water supply system, potash mines, wetland projects The Water Security Agency has announced nearly $5 million will be invested to rehabilitate a portion of the M1 Canal. “The M1 Canal creates a major economic benefit to the people of Saskatchewan,” Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency Ken Cheveldayoff said on Monday, July 29. “Our government is committed to ensuring the economy continues to grow by providing producers, municipalities, industrial clients, parks and wildlife a reliable water supply.” The rehabilitation work will begin in September and consists of enlarging and relining 1.3 km of the canal and retrofitting two concrete check structures. The project is expected to be completed by July 2014. With this announcement, the Government of Saskatchewan has invested over $11 million into the rehabilitation of the M1 Canal since 2010. This is part of a multi-year project to rehabilitate all of the M1 Canal. “The M1 Canal is a vital piece of infrastructure for irrigators in the province,” Saskatchewan Irrigation Projects Association Chair Rodger Pederson said. “Irrigation plays a major role in Saskatchewan’s agricultural economy and we support the government’s commitment to rehabilitating this structure as we continue to focus on expanding irrigation across Saskatchewan.” Constructed in the 1960s, the M1 Canal is a 22.5 km long water supply canal extending from Lake Diefenbaker to Broderick Reservoir near Outlook. The canal provides water for 37,000 acres of irrigation in the Saskatchewan River Irrigation District. The M1 Canal also provides water to the Saskatoon South East Water Supply system. This system supplies water to a further 18,000 acres of irrigation, five reservoirs, towns and villages, three potash mines, 13 wetlands projects and the Blackstrap Provincial Park. The Water Security Agency was created to lead implementation of the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan. It will improve water management capacity and service to individuals, businesses and communities across Saskatchewan.

and west of Martensville – minutes later. “Upon arrival, the structure was fully engulfed in flames and the roof had collapsed,” said Rick Elder, Dalmeny Fire Chief. With most of the structure gone, fire crews worked to keep

the fire contained. Personnel remained on scene until approximately 4:00 p.m. that same day. Elder said the fire was a result of accidental causes. Damage was limited to the shed that caught fire and there were no injuries to people or animals.
