Valley Ford gears up to rebuild facility in Hague It’s business as usual for Valley Ford in Hague. The Ford dealership, which suffered a devastating fire two weeks ago, is now completely up and running in temporary facilities within the town of Hague. Valley Ford Dealer Principal Bob Kenny and Valley Ford Hague General Manager Kevin Adams held a news conference on Tuesday, September 10 to outline the progress the dealership has made. Kenny said it’s been an “intense” two weeks for everyone. The dealership employs over 25 staff and has served Hague and the surrounding area for the past two decades. “Valley Ford’s staff and its sales make major contributions to the community,” said Kenny. “We plan to rebuild in the same location. We’ve received the approval from Ford and we’re currently working with architects to design a new facility.” Adams said following the fire, Valley Ford management was very concerned about the well-being of its employees. “Our goals have been to ensure we are able to provide the services our customers need and also to continue to employ all our staff,” said Adams. “We’re pleased to have met both goals so quickly.” Adams said the staff and community have pulled together to find solutions. A service site is in operation a short distance from the original lot at 101 Windsor Avenue in Hague, and a second service site is slated to be operational by the end of this week. The dealership’s owners and managers credited the staff with removing all the vehicles, as well as the technicians’ tools
from the facility before the shop was consumed by fire. They also had warm words for the firefighters from Hague and surrounding communities who battled the blaze and worked to protect surrounding homes and businesses. “We will be forever thankful to the community of Hague for their support and assistance in providing the services we needed, including lunches and snacks for staff and firefighters,
and meeting space,” said Adams. Hague Mayor Pat Wagner said she’s happy to see the dealership remain, since it’s a major employer and draws shoppers in from other centres. “People come here to shop for cars, and they stop by our other businesses and see what our town has to offer,” said Wagner. “This dealership has been here a long time. We’re glad they’ve decided to stay and rebuild.”
Saskatoon chosen for international highway safety study Saskatchewan is partnering with Virginia Tech, the University of Saskatchewan and Canadian transportation ministries to host a major highway safety research project. The Canadian Naturalistic Driving Study (CNDS) is sponsored by all of the federal, provincial and territorial transportation departments through the Council of Deputy Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety. Saskatoon was selected by a national committee as the location for Canada’s first study of this kind. The study involves outfitting volunteers’ vehicles with cameras and sensors that will collect safety data over the next two years. Virginia Tech
st Fall Harve
Transportation Institute has been contracted to conduct the study, and began recruiting Saskatoon-area drivers earlier this summer. Examples of data uses include looking at how drivers are able to navigate curves, what behaviours they exhibit at intersections, typical highway speeds they travel and whether roadside signage is understood. “This is a significant opportunity for Saskatchewan to assist transportation engineers across North America in building safer highways for all motorists,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said. “Saskatchewan was chosen to take part in this North American study as it provides researchers
with the ability to study drivers who use rural highways.” “The advancements in technology have allowed us to gain more knowledge and insight about driver behaviour on roadways than we were able to obtain previously,” Group Lead with the Center for Vulnerable Road User Safety at Virginia Tech Dr. Charlie Klauer said. “Collecting driving data in Saskatchewan provides a unique opportunity to not only better understand drivers in Canada but also to compare drivers across North America and hopefully, worldwide.” The CNDS is related to a growing number of similar studies being undertak-
en in the United States and abroad, and will make a significant contribution to advancing road safety research as well as a better understanding driver behaviour. SGI is assisting Virginia Tech and the University of Saskatchewan with the volunteer recruitment process by sending letters to Saskatchewan drivers inviting them to participate in the study. Participation is strictly voluntary and rigorous protocols are in place to safeguard privacy. While the provincial government is assisting researchers in recruiting participants, no government agency will have access to any personal information, including the names of volunteers.

A 60-year-old combine gets back into the field after being rescued from the scrap heap By TERRY PUGH
J
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
ohn Enns vividly remembers taking off the crop back in the early 1950s, when he was about 14 years old. “My dad had bought a brand new combine from the dealer in Hague,” recalled Enns. “It was a John Deere 25 model. It was the first combine I ever did any harvesting with, and I always had a soft spot in my heart for that old machine. It’s always been my dream to try and get hold of one and restore it and get it back in the field in working condition.” That dream became a reality this fall. After a year of painstaking effort rebuilding the vintage combine and coaxing its engine back to life, Enns put the 60-year-old mechanical wonder to work last weekend, cutting and threshing a beautiful stand of wheat on land that’s been in the family for 112 years. Sporting a grin, Enns looked back over his shoulder with pride, watching the little combine’s 25-bushel hopper fill with golden kernels while driving a vintage John Deere 60 model tractor. His extended family, including his four sons, took a break from their combines to watch the demonstration. The 60-year-old combine and tractor of similar vintage both look brand new, thanks to Enns’ restoration skills. After years of searching, Enns found the combine he was looking for in Manitoba last year. “The Model 25 is actually quite scarce and hard to find. This one looked pretty decent in the picture that the guy e-
mailed me,” said Enns with a chuckle during an interview in his wheat field east of Osler and north of the Clarkboro Ferry on Saturday, September 7. “But looks can be deceiving. It was actually in rough shape.” Enns said restoring the combine was a labour of love. “I tore it down completely and brushed it and sandblasted it and painted it and reassembled it,” he said. “It’s nice to see it back in the field. Probably the last time it would have done any work was maybe the mid-1960s. It’s been sitting in the bush rusting out since then.” Enns said the John Deere 25 model combine came out in 1953, and replaced the earlier JD 1280 model, which had been produced since 1947. “The 1280 model was very popular,” said Enns. “There’s lots of parts for them around, but not too many for the 25. The company only made the 25 model for a couple years. When they discontinued the 25, the dealer in Hague sold a couple dozen of them to farmers in this area.” The JD Model 25 combine was similar to the 1280, but with an additional 5-bushel hopper capacity and a header that was a foot wider. “It’s pretty small compared to the modern combines,” he said. “But in its day it was pretty impressive. It could do the work of a 12-man threshing crew.” Enns will be joining other vintage harvesters this coming weekend in Hague during the Hague Threshermen’s Day, which kicks off with a pancake breakfast, followed by old-time threshing demonstrations and vintage combines.

Garden of Hope yields a rich harvest for inmates, food bank By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
While the amount of vegetables may not be as plentiful as previous years, the Garden of Hope at the Saskatoon Urban Camp is yielding as big a bounty as ever in many other ways, says Giles Saulnier, manager of the Urban Camp. The garden, which utilizes land that was previously wasted, is in its fourth year of supplying fresh vegetables to the Saskatoon Food Bank and St. Mary’s Community School. The garden yielded 20,000 pounds of vegetables this year. Since it started in 2010, it has produced a total of 61,000 pounds of food. “It’s a program that has so many benefits for everyone,” explained Saulnier in an interview on Thursday, September 5. “The inmates want to work and be productive. Many of these guys learn valuable skills. Others have skills that they bring to the program which makes it better.” Saulnier, along with Hon. Christine Tell, the Minister Responsible for Corrections and Policing, spoke at a “gifting” ceremony at the Urban Camp on Tuesday, September 10. At
the event, baskets of vegetables grown in the garden were on display. “The Garden of Hope is a powerful symbol of the Urban Camp inmates’ determination to better themselves and contribute to the local community,” said Minister Tell. Tammy Rosteski, garden coordinator at the Urban Camp, said the variety of vegetables planted in the garden was increased this year to include peppers, honeydew melons, zucchini and cucumbers. She noted that there were challenges because of the late spring and heavy snowfall, which appeared to create an increase in potato bugs. That infestation lowered the quantity and quality of potatoes, one of the mainstays of the garden. The Garden of Hope has been so succcessful over the past several years that the concept has spread to other correctional centres in the northern part of the province, noted Saulnier. “North Battleford community correctional centre has expanded its garden,” he said. “There is also one in the LaRonge area and one at Buffalo Narrows.” Saulnier said the Saskatoon

Christine Tell and Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison look on. Below, a sample of the food grown in the garden. Correctional Centre senior management is wholly supportive of the garden program, as is the provincial correctional service. He credited his team at the Urban Camp and the correctional centre with making the program so successful.
Saulnier said the initiative benefited greatly from support from private businesses, including Floral Acres, Early’s Farm and Garden, and Hamm Construction. The Urban Camp program has been in existence for 32 years, and provides inmates who are nearing release with work experience geared to supporting the community. The program is utilized by many municipal governments, nonprofit organizations and other agencies, Saulnier said. “We have approximately 120 organizations that use our services. We’re booking into 2014 for some projects next year. The demand is definitely there.”

September 3 was a big day for Warman as the Warman Community Middle School opened for classes. This innovative school, which has been designated as a Certified LEED Silver facility, is attached to the Legends Centre. Clockwise from top left: Students from Grade 4 to 7 enjoy their first recess of the new year. Longtime school board trustee Sam Dyck accompanies his granddaughter Laura (far left) to her grade 4 classroom. Grade 4 teacher Dave Read gives students instructions. The day’s schedule is written on whiteboard that doubles as the doors to ample storage space for the classroom. WCMS principal Greg Tebay spent some time visiting with students during recess. Instead of solid walls, classrooms have large windows facing into the hallways. Grade 4 student Kayla Karwachi obviously enjoyed her first day of classes in the new school. WCMS has a very open concept with many places for teachers and students to work and deliver lessons, including the seat-like steps on the sides of the main staircase. More classroom space makes a big difference for students, staff at VCA By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
A $2 million addition to the Valley Christian Academy (VCA) in Osler will make a big difference to the students’ learning experience, according to VCA Principal Syd Laskowski. The addition, funded by the Bergthaler Mennonite Church, which owns and operates the K-12 school in partnership with the Prairie Spirit School Division (PSSD), is just over 11,000 square feet. It adds about a third more floor space to the existing school, which was first constructed in 1986. “It’s going to make a big difference for everyone,” said Laskowski in an interview last week shortly after classes began at the school. “Not only are there more classrooms with state-of-the-art shop and
home-ec facilities, but there’s also a lot more space for the students to hang out. It’s not as cramped as it was before.” The new addition effectively replaces a satellite building that was brought in to supplement the original building’s classroom space in 1987, said Laskowski. “The satellite building was just meant to be a temporary fix to help ease the classroom crunch,” he said. “It was moved in and fixed up to tide the school over. But it’s been 25 years, and it had basically outlived its usefulness. There were some structural problems, and it had to be replaced.” The new addition, which is still seeing finishing touches completed over the coming weeks, includes a drafting room/art room, industrial arts lab, a science lab, a home ec lab, and a large open com-
mon area where students can eat their lunch. The addition also holds the students’ lockers, which has freed up space in the foyer of the main entrance to the school. The home ec lab represents a new venture for VCA, and the industrial arts lab now boasts an area designed specifically for welding. In addition, the shop has an overhead door that will enable students to build large projects and also work on vehicles. Laskowski said the student population at the school has always remained fairly stable at about 350 students. That is the maximum number the school can accommodate. A waiting list is maintained for those families looking to enroll, and families pay approximately $1200 in annual tuition fees to help cover the cost of the school’s maintenance and utilities.
Syd Laskowski, principal of Valley Christian Academy in Osler, says the brightly-lit common area in the new addition to the K-12 school adds a lot of useful space for students TERRY PUGH | CLARK’S CROSSING GAZETTE
The PSSD pays the salaries of the teaching and support staff, as well as bussing for students under the agreement, noted Laskowski. “VCA functions very much like an associate school,” he said. “The school division also
gives us a decentralized budget similar to other schools in the division to help us pay for textbooks and computers, phys ed equipment and teaching aids. We teach all the Saskatchewan curriculum here. The same math, arts, and sci-
ence courses, and we have the freedom through Sask Learning to use some Christian literature in the English language arts. We can also teach Christian ethics as a course, as well as science from a Christian perspective.”

Saskatchewan could be tougher on drunk drivers
Short fuses in wake of chronic power outages
It was one of those things that may have once seemed comical.
COMMENTARY
It’s been a proven theory in basic economics that there is no such thing as a free lunch. And our province’s rapid rate of growth is a shining example. For the third time in just over 10 days on Monday, the lights went out in Warman (and at times some other locales) due to a power failure. The reasons for the failures aren’t particularly clear, however. It’s no surprise SaskPower’s aging infrastructure is likely undergoing a badly needed renewal and expansion. Consumption rates are also on the rise due to record population and industrial/commercial growth in and around Saskatoon. No matter how long the power is out, there is no doubt that each incident causes a huge inconvenience to the economy. While many individuals can simply change their activities to ones that don’t rely on power – such as doing something outdoors or maybe dusting off a book – the vast majority are put at a standstill. Stores lock their doors and manufacturers shut down machinery. Staff are forced to wait around waiting to see if the power will come back on so they can resume their work. It’s difficult to pinpoint the economic damage each minute the power is out but the dollar figure would be staggering as cash registers fall silent. In addition to lost sales, the potential for electronic equipment – such as computers and major appliances – that are not surge protected to be damaged beyond repair is also a factor. Power outages are usually reserved for those summer nights when thunderstorms roll through, or those bone chilling January days when we rely most heavily on electricity to heat our homes. Occasionally, a traffic accident or related mishap causes a line to go down. Customers can understand and rationalize those causes. It’s the unexplained outages that raises blood pressure. An otherwise “normal” day can be turned upside down quickly. Either way one slices it, growth and a vibrant economy sometimes means a bit of pain as equipment is replaced and the system gains added capacity. Hopefully for we, the SaskPower customers, it won’t be a prolonged agony of flickering lights and unexpected surges. Fuses get shorter and shorter with every outage.

Provincial Politics
Today, however, it serves as a reminder of how serious a problem drunk driving is in this province. Two men were both charged with impaired driving after crashing their pickups into each other, according to front page story in The Regina Leader-Post late last month. The accident occurred 1:18 a.m. Aug. 30 on the TransCanada Highway about one kilometre west of Pilot Butte when a Ford Raptor collided with a GMC Sierra as both were heading east. The accident caused both vehicles to roll, with the Raptor winding up in the ditch and the Sierra in the median. Charged in the incident were a 20-year-old man who was driving the Raptor and a 40-year-old man in the Sierra. A female passenger in the Raptor was transported to
hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but neither driver required medical attention. Admittedly, to have two impaired drivers in the same accident is a rarity. And 30-plus years ago when drinking and driving was somehow more culturally acceptable – especially in rural settings like the one I grew up in – it might not have raised many eyebrows. But after decades of carnage on our highways, we thankfully take drunk driving more seriously today. It is for that reason that maybe all of us have to take a second look at new Saskatchewan legislative committee recommendations surrounding impaired driving and ask whether they go far enough. By an ironic coincidence, the very day that the bizarre drunk driving story ran in the newspaper was the day that the Legislature’s Traffic Safety Committee released its report – a report that groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) said fell short. Admittedly, the report did have some solid enough recommendations like zero tol-
erance for drivers under Saskatchewan’s legal drinking age (19 years) caught driving. (Although MADD said zero drinking should be extending to 21-year-olds.) But one recommendation that both MADD and the NDP opposition said needed to be included was an immediate three-day impoundment of vehicles for any caught with blood alcohol content readings of .05. Some critics of the recommendation complain that it is far too draconian. They argue that it infringes on people’s property rights and that it would be grossly unfair for people who need their vehicle to make a living to lose their jobs over one or two beers. After all, the Criminal Code states it’s not illegal to drive if you have a blood alcohol reading under .08. Legislative Secretary and traffic safety committee chair Darryl Hickie was slightly more diplomatic, explaining that government members thought it better to proceed in a more “incremental” way. But NDP MLA and deputy chair Danielle Chartier said the Sask. Party government is simply choosing “to ignore
important evidence presented by policy experts in the field of traffic safety, and with that will be putting Saskatchewan lives at risk.” Chartier noted that both B.C. and Alberta have moved to the .05-three-day impoundment and have seen drunkdriving related fatalities decline. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan continues to suffer from the highest alcohol-related fatality rate among the provinces. “Suspensions are easy to live with. Many people drive while suspended,” Chartier said. “In fact, we heard up to 70 per cent of people will drive while suspended. It’s much harder to hide a three-day vehicle impoundment from your spouse or your parents than a short-term license suspension.” Admittedly, in a province with a large rural base, such measures are tough for a government to implement – especially with rural hotel owners’ concerns that it will hamper business. But maybe it’s time we started to see drunk driving for what it is – a real danger, rather than a laughing matter we once thought it to be.

Public, private partnerships are a costly shortcut for taxpayers Public Private Partnerships (P3’s) sound like a great financial shortcut, but do the people of Saskatchewan know the dangers? Some examples of excessive costs of P3’s. Ontario hospitals: Ontario’s Auditor-General recently revealed that the province’s flagship P3 hospital, Brampton Civic, cost the public $200 million more than if it had been publicly financed and built directly by the province. East Coast Toll Roads: An
estimated more than $300 million in tolls were produced on the Cobequid Pass for a deal in which private financiers put up $66 million. The Nova Scotia government is paying interest rate of 10 per cent for 30 years, twice its rate of borrowing. Universities: A P3 project at the Universite de Quebec a Montreal failed, doubling the cost to the public from $200 million to $400 million. West Coast Highways: B.C.’s Sea-to-Sky Highway will cost

nearly $1 billion into private coffers that could have been used for public services. Furthermore, Chicago cannot build parking lots for the contract duration because they might compete with the outsourced parking meters. Thurlow steps into retirement Warman Finance Manager will be missed, mayor says By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
After almost three decades in the Warman municipal office, Judi Thurlow has mixed feelings about her retirement. “It’s been so many years,” said Thurlow in an interview just before her final day on the job on Friday, September 6. “I’m definitely looking forward to taking it easy for a while, but I’m also going to really miss the people.” Thurlow, who moved to Warman in 1977, started working at the town office in 1985. “It was exactly 28 years ago today,” she said with a smile. “I remember it very clearly. I was a little nervous, but that didn’t last long. I was so busy from the first second I walked in the door, because we were mailing out the utility reminders to all the residents. “It’s not like today, where everything is computerized. We had a form letter that we copied, and in those days the copier had a roll of paper that you tore off after each copy, and we put the letter in the typewriter and then we typed the name and address and the amount that the resident owed on each piece of paper, and then we stuffed the envelopes and mailed them out. It was a long process.” And that was when the community was a fraction of its current population. “I can’t imagine doing it that way now,” she said. “Not with the population boom we’ve seen here in the last few years.” Thurlow said the town had a slower pace in those days. “Lots of times people would phone the town office for information of all kinds,” she said. “It wasn’t just about taxes or utilities or the sale of land. It was for phone numbers or all kinds of things.” She remembers being stymied by one question. “One lady phoned up and asked how she could get bluing stains out of her laundry,” said Thurlow. “I didn’t have any idea.” The municipal and school taxes were all calcuated individually, as were early-payment discounts. “The receipts were all hand-written,” she added. “I was pretty glad to see the computer programs come in that handled all those calculations.” Thurlow said when she and her husband first moved to

Warman, their house on 7th Avenue North was on the very edge of town. “The Brian King Centre wasn’t there yet, and our back window looked out onto a field. Wilken Crescent hadn’t been built, there were lots of vacant lots, the streets were all gravel with ditches and no storm sewers.” While she had worked at a large potash corporation for five years doing accounting work, it was Thurlow’s first experience in a municipal office. But it was a small office, and with everyone pitching in and doing a lot of different tasks, it helped her learn many aspects of the town’s operations. She was gradually promoted and most recently served for many years as Finance and Administration Manager for the City of Warman. She says the big move to the new Town Hall (now City Hall) in 2006 was a welcome change from the cramped offices that had served for so many decades. “The staff members had a hand in designing the new building,” she said. “Overall, it’s great. But if we could have done one thing different, we would have remembered to put in a double set of doors at the front to limit the cold draft in the wintertime.” At a farewell gathering for Thurlow last week, Warman Mayor Sheryl Spence praised Thurlow’s work ethic and attention to detail.
“Judi has seen our staff grow from under 10 to over 50,” said Spence. “She has been here to welcome at least three administrators, four mayors, and has seen many councils come and go. I know my first couple years on council were tough and Judi was there anytime I needed a shoulder, some advice or even just a visit. Her door has always been open.” Spence added that whoever
replaces Thurlow has “some really big boots to fill.” “You wll be missed not only because of a job very well done, but also because you care about Warman, its people, and all of us,” Spence said of Thurlow. Quoting from former US President John F. Kennedy, Spence said: “May your future be as bright as the future you have helped nurture in this beautiful community.”

nown for his punishing style of play, Canadian Football League great Bill Baker can also dish out plenty of praise. High school football coaches are the true unsung heroes of the sport, Baker says. A Saskatchewan Roughriders star who played with legends like Ron Lancaster and George Reed in the 1960s; a man who went on to become general manager of the Green and White in 1987-88; and a man who even served as Commissioner of the CFL in 1989, Baker is a man who possesses an undisputed love for the game. “I’ve seen literally thousands of professional football games,” said the 69-year-old Baker in an interview on the sidelines of a Delisle Rebels pre-season game on Friday, August 30. “Frankly, I’d much rather go to a high school football game. It’s more fun.”
In Saskatchewan, Baker’s roots run deep. Now living in Armstrong, B.C., he proudly makes a point of returning to Delisle at least once a year to take in a Rebels game and talk shop with Ken Byers, coach of the perenniallystrong 9-man football club. “This is where it all comes together,” explained Baker as the repeating sound of bodies colliding permeated the late summer air. “This is where you see the young kids developing into athletes and good citizens, and learning life lessons. This is the real grassroots where it all happens. “To stand here on the sidelines with the prairie breezes blowing and being outdoors in the sunshine on a fall day when the combines are going, what more could you ask for? Being a Saskatchewan guy, I get a whole bunch of extra things out of it by being here. This is a real treat for me.” Baker said he has a lot of respect for high school football
coaches – people who devote so much time and energy to guide young student athletes. “I’m sure many people don’t understand the commitment that high school football coaches have, but I certainly appreciate it.”
THE UNDERTAKER
Baker played 174 games over 11 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1968– 1973, 1977–1978) and the B.C. Lions (1974–1976). He was a Division All-Star five times and won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in 1976 as a member of the Lions. But he is still best known by his nickname and earned the moniker, “The Undertaker”, after knocking out an Edmonton Eskimos quarterback. “We had this fierce feud going with the Eskimos at that time,” said Baker. “I had knocked out one of the quarterbacks in a game where I had the flu, I had a bad knee and I was feeling pret-

It was just one of those nasty fooball games where you just go out and try to survive.” Baker never got penalized on the play but, to his surprise, he received a letter after the game from then-CFL Commissioner Jake Gaudaur reprimanding him for “excessive roughness throughout the game” and fined him $100. “I had never heard of that before or since,” laughed Baker. “It wasn’t even a rule. I wish I had kept the letter. They tried to have me thrown out of the league.” But after he was interviewed on television by a Regina sportscaster, Rider fans rallied to pay Baker’s fine. “They took up a collection on the air,” said Baker. “People phoned in and donated.” The next game in Edmonton, Baker received some advice from his star quarterHall of famer forms special bond with Rebels Continued on PAGE 12

Warman downs Martensville as rivals go head-to-head in opening game By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
The Warman Wolverines overcame a slow start to down the visiting Martensville Royals 42-16 at Neufeld Field on Friday, September 6. The game between the traditional rivals marked the beginning of the 2013 high school football season, and even though it was an exhibition game that doesn’t count in the final standings, both teams played like the provincial championship was on the line. What else do you expect when these two square off? The Royals got on the scoreboard first with a touchdown by running back Devin Merriam, who played an exceptional game for the visitors. Led by quarterback Morgan Avery, the Royals held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the turning point in the game came when Warman de-
fensive back Blaze Morrow intercepted a pass in the second quarter. On the ensuing drive, Warman quarterback Josh Misskey threaded his way through virtually the entire Royals defensive corps to make his way to the opposition’s 15yard line. Misskey then completed a pass to Warman receiver Tyler Hume with three minutes left in the quarter to tie the game. Warman added to their lead with less than thirty seconds in the half when outside linebacker Justin Schreiner scampered in for the team’s second touchdown. After that it was all Warman, as Josh Misskey found his groove, scoring two touchdowns on the ground and connecting on touchdown passes to Tyler Hume and Anthony Hallborg. Late in the fourth quarter Martensville added to their points with a converted touchdown and a single point safety
touch. Warman coach Tyler Scheidt said he was happy with his team’s effort. “We got a lot of contributions from a lot of different places,” said Scheidt. “They keyed in on our running game and threw some blitzes at us early that we weren’t ready for, but we were able to regroup and make adjustments. It was Josh Misskey’s first game as quarterback, and I think he got more comfortable as the game went on. It was nice to see him complete those long passes.” Misskey, who took over the quarterbacking duties this season from his older brother Logan, said he got some good advice from his sibling. “Logan helped me quite a lot over the summer,” said Misskey. “He worked with me every day on my throwing technique and gave me quite a lot of advice from his experience.

back, Ron Lancaster. “These fans are going to be awful mad,” Baker recalled Lancaster saying. “He told me to go stand over somewhere by myself – away from the Rider team bench – and to be sure to keep my helmet on all the time because the Eskimo fans were going to be throwing bottles at us.” Despite being a force on the field, Baker never played on a Grey Cup winner. He was, however, inducted to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1994 and, in 2006, was chosen #43 on the TSN Top 50 All-Time CFL players list. Baker’s connection to the Rebels began in 2009 when he pulled into the Delisle Co-op gas bar while on his way to visit his sister, who lives in the community. As he was filling up his vehicle, a bus filled with a bunch of kids passed by and disappeared into town. He remembered asking the store’s clerk where the bus was going and was told there was a high
school football game ready to start. He decided to drop by. It happened that a young man by the name of Dustin Stadnyk – a member of the Rebels team that year – was a grand-nephew of Baker’s old pal and Rider teammate, Ron Atchison. Unfortunately, Stadnyk suffered a serious injury in that game. Ever since that fateful stop for fuel four years ago, Baker has kept up his friendship with the coach and the team, returning every fall to take in a game. He also talks to Byers by phone a few times during the year. “Once in a while, I’ll just call up Kenny to talk about things and give him some encouragement and support.” But, Baker modestly downplays any suggestion he brings star power to the Rebels. “I’m just the oldest, fattest mascot of any high school team in Saskatchewan,” he said with a grin as wide as the sidelines on which he stood. Byers, meanwhile, said the

Wolverines linebacker Brandon McKimmon gets a firm grasp on Martensville quarterback Morgan Avery at Neufeld Field on Friday It’s a lot different from playing receiver, and I was a little nervous at the beginning, but as the game went on I felt more confident.” The real story for Warman was the defense. Defensive linebacker Kyle Keating said after a shaky first quarter, the defensive unit settled in. “They got that first touchdown and we were a little offbalance,” said Keating. “But we got together and decided to step it up.” Martensville coach Lyle Evanisky said his team ex-
pects to bounce back in time for the start of the regular season. “Warman has a strong team,” he said. “I thought we did a good job stopping them on the run in the first quarter, but then they opened up with the pass. They have a good quarterback and good receivers that play fast, so it’s hard to get those guys when they get into open space. We had a few missed tackles and offensively we had some mistakes. But they’re all little things that are fixable.”
Evanisky said with only three Grade 12 athletes in the starting offensive lineup, and just five Grade 12s in total, the team is young. But that holds a lot of promise for the future, he added. “This was a good test for us,” he said. “We got to run some new stuff. We’ll watch the film and hopefully have a better game next week. Martensville’s next home game is Friday, September 13 against John Paul II. Warman also plays at home Friday, September 13 against Kindersley.

High school football season kicks off By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
High school football teams are set to lift the lid on a brand new season this week and there’s no shortage of optimism both on and off the field. Whether they have a long tradition or are starting a brand new program, every team has a strong connection with the community. Businesses, individuals and organizations in each of the towns or cities that field a high school football team contribute tirelessly to help the sport flourish. Whether it’s building a clubhouse or concession at field level, donating money for a scoreclock, landscaping the field itself, volunteering at the concession booth, or simply turning out to watch the game as a fan, community members play a huge role in the success of high school football programs.
WARMAN WOLVERINES
After winning a silver medal at the provincial final last year, the Warman Wolverines have come a long way in just a few short years. Head Coach Tyler Scheidt says the big difference is the number of young players coming into the program who have gained experience in the Kinsmen Football League minor football program. “The new kids understand more of the fundamentals,” Scheidt said. “The older players already know what to expect. We’re at a point now where we’re able to plug new players into the system to replace those that graduate, rather than having to rebuild all the time.” He said several key leaders graduated last year, but there is a strong group of Grade 11s and 12s that are ready to step into those roles. “Our offensive line is still intact,” he noted, adding the defense should also be strong this season.
MARTENSVILLE ROYALS
The Martensville Royals also graduated a good chunk of their senior players last spring, but head coach Lyle Evanisky is confident there’s a new group of leaders ready to take the helm. “We actually have only one Grade 12 player on our starting offense,” Evanisky said. “There are only five Grade 12s on the team in total, so we’re a young team overall, but we have a lot of big strong Grade 10 and 11 kids stepping up for us on both sides of the ball, so there’s a lot of promise for the future.”
DELISLE REBELS
After a tough loss in the provincial semi-final last fall, the Delisle Rebels are looking to bounce back this season. Head coach Ken Byers said the team has a solid group of fourteen Grade 12 veterans who all have considerable post-season experience under their belts. “Those players got together and started practicing on their own over the summer,” said Byers. “They’re pretty serious about the game, but they also like to have fun.” Despite being one of the smaller schools in the conference to field a 9-man team, Byers said there are always lots of eager recruits. “They’ve watched their older brothers play, and lots of them want to wear the same number and be part of that tradition,” he said. “We also have great support from the town, especially for our annual night game.”
CLAVET COUGARS
The Clavet Cougars have come a long way over the years. “When we started we had 17 kids, we played on a dirt field, and we got our butts kicked every game,” recalled head coach Shaun Priel. “Now we’ve gone from 6-man to 9-man, we have 50 kids on the team, and virtually every boy from Grade 9 through 12 wants to play football. They want to be part of the pro-

Dalmeny Cougars take the field By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
The Dalmeny Cougars scored a big victory last Thursday, even though the scoreboard had them on the wrong end of a 50-7 loss. With hundreds of supporters along the sidelines, the Cougars made history by taking the field at Centennial Park in Dalmeny as the Cougars hosted Outlook in the community’s first-ever high school football game. After two years of planning, fundraising, organizing and practice, all that hard work has finally paid off. “It’s a great feeling,” said Cougars co-coach Cory Lewis after the game, which saw the Cougars fall to a much more experienced team. “It’s a learning experience. With the exception of three boys who played for the Martensville Royals last year, every one of these players is brand new. Time for the Roughiders to regroup and get ready for the Argos Thud. That’s the sound of the Saskatchewan Roughriders crashing back to earth. In a shocking outcome, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were denied a fourth-consecutive victory when they lost 25-13 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Sunday’s tenth annual Banjo Bowl at the brand new Investor’s Group Field in the Manitoba capital. Simply put, it just wasn’t the Roughriders’ day. With the whole province and the entire Rider Nation still elated over the team’s first 8-1 start in club history, Sunday’s performance didn’t look anything like the Saskatchewan team to which we’ve become accustomed. We’ve gotten used to the slow starts to games, but the team’s struggles in the redzone in the early going of this one sure seemed like an omen for bad things to come. In three early trips deep into Bomber territory, the club came away with a pair of field goals and Darian Durant’s second interception of the
year. Remarkably the Bombers never had a first down in the entire first half and trailed the Riders 12-10 at the break. However, Winnipeg stepped on the gas in the second half by outscoring the Riders 15-1 on the way to victory. It’s pretty simple to see how the game was won as the Winnipeg defensive front ate up Durant to the tune of eight sacks. They were all vicious. Ironically the Riders had seven sacks of their own but they didn’t make an impact on the game. Really the only good thing about the road trip was getting to see the Bombers’ splashy new stadium which truly is a sight to behold. Rider staffers felt it’s the loudest crowd they’ve ever experienced and I would have to agree! Bomber fans and Winnipeg media alike were deliriously happy at the game’s conclusion and several said it’s the first time all year the crowd made any noise at all. Amazingly Sunday’s victory

was the first for the Bombers in their new digs after four straight losses to open up the joint. “And it couldn’t have come against a better opponent,” smiled Blue Bomber radio colour commentator Doug Brown in the press box afterwards. Indeed they don’t like the Riders much over there and why would they? Saskatchewan has inflicted an incredible amount of heartbreak on that franchise over the years but for now, Winnipeg has the bragging rights. And they earned this one. Full marks. “They played like they had nothing to lose,” said Rider coach Corey Chamblin after the game. “On the flipside, we didn’t have our best game. They had theirs and we didn’t
have ours.” Chamblin was pretty calm after the contest despite his club getting beaten up pretty badly on the field. There were

gram, and I think a big part of that is because of the support from the whole community.” The team has five Grade 12 players, but a majority of the team is made up of Grade 10 students and younger. “But their skills sets are good,” said Priel. “A lot of the kids have played in the minor football league in Saskatoon, and that makes a big difference.”
HAGUE PANTHERS
The Hague Panthers graduated five players last year, and are relying heavily on younger students to take their place in the starting lineup. Head Coach Clay Kirby said the team is benefitig from having fielded a team in the Saskatoon Minor Football league. “Those younger kids are all coming up into Grade 9 now and they have the skills,” said Kirby. “Hague has a strong football culture tradition, and even though it faded a bit, it’s coming back sronger than ever.” Kirby said the construction of a concession and “eyein-the-sky” booth on the field sidelines, as well as a brand new scoreclock, all built and financed by individual volunteers and local businesses, will contribute to the atmosphere on game days. The team also has new jerseys. Kirby credited team alumni Kyle Fedrau, James Bergen, Aaron Wiebe, Trent Fehr,
Brent Penner, Jeff Penner, Shawn Penner, Michael Rudolph and Barry Rudolph with building the concession this past summer.
DALMENY COUGARS
After two years of fundraising and organizing, the Dalmeny Cougars are a reality. For co-coaches Stephen Kowalchuk and Cory Lewis, fielding a 6-man football team is a big challenge, but well worth it. “A lot of the kids don’t know a lot about football, but they’re very athletic and they’re fast learners,” said Kowalchuk. “We also have three kids that played for Martensville last year, and they’re providing good leadership.” Lewis says the community support has been overwhelming, and noted many businesses and individuals donated funds to ensure the team was well-equipped before they played their first game.
ABERDEEN CRUSADERS
The Aberdeen Crusaders are looking forward to a good year, according to head coach Justin Olnhoff. The 6-man team has a strong tradition of support in the community, and younger players are expected to step into leadership roles. Olnoff said the key to the team is their spirit of determination. “They are not going to give up,” Olnoff said. “They are going to play right to the whistle.”
HANLEY SABERS
After 21 years of coaching young athletes, Hanley Sabers head coach Mark Anderson says he still gets pumped about the start of every new football season. The 6-man team has won eight provincial championships and finished second nine times since it was formed in 1963. Last year the team was a silver medalist. That winning tradition has ensured a strong program that attracts and motivates players, and there’s a tremendous amount of support for the team in the community, said Anderson. The team draws players from Dundurn, Shields and Thode and the rural area between Hanley and Saskatoon. Anderson said he’s excited by this year’s crop of rookies. The team has seven Grade 12s and four Grade 11s, with most of the team consisting of Grade 10s. This year, the club is proud of its newly-completed clubhouse and scoreclock.

day night at Mosaic Stadium, but Best is gone for awhile. “Definitely not happy with the sacks given up,” Chamblin continued. “But we have a very good football team and coaching staff. We’ll learn from this, regroup and move on.” Indeed they will. And the intrigue which has come with this 2013 season continues to be endlessly entertaining. Win or lose.
a lot of limping players toting icebags when it was all said and done. They’ll learn from it and quickly move on. The club was missing defensive back Dwight Anderson (hamstring) and offensive lineman Chris Best (foot) in Sunday’s game and it showed. Anderson’s expected to be back for the team’s next game, against the first-place Toronto Argonauts from the East Division Satur-

Aberdeen’s Mack Medernach (right) evades Rosetown defender Daniel Dows
Aberdeen drops home opener to Rosetown By WAYNE SHIELS
essenceofsask@gmail.com
The Aberdeen Crusaders dropped a 53-26 decision in their home opener September 5 to a very talented Rosetown Royals team. The Royals dominated much of the first half scoring with four rushing TDs and a single on a 50-yard punt to take 29-0 lead. With the humidex reading in the high plus30s it was a real testament to the drive of the Crusaders that they continued to battle, eventually scoring their first major when QB Ryan Maruschak hit Mack Medernach on a 45-yard pass and run play before the half ended. The Crusaders cut further into the Royals lead when
Medernach scored on a long run early in the second half. Rosetown had a good return to Aberdeen’s 48-yard line on the ensuing kickoff and, after a long pass and run play, the Royals scored on a 4-yard quarterback sneak by Mac Campbell. In the fourth quarter Rosetown scored on another long run before Medernach responded for the Crusaders, scoring his third touchdown of the game. The Aberdeen defence came up big, sacking the Campbell and recovering the resulting fumble on Rosetown’s 38-yard line. The offence was able to move the ball to the 4-yard line where Maruschak was able to connect with a wide open Mederach. Rosetown
scored one more TD to make the final score 53-26. Despite their slow start, the Crusaders have much to build on with their response in the second half. “They are not going to give up,” said Aberdeen coach Justin Olnhoff. “They want it as bad as anyone else does. They are going to play right to the whistle. They are going to play every play.” Olnhoff added that the last play of the game is evidence of his players’ determination. Medernach put his shoulder down and ran over a Royals defender. “That is the heart of the Crusaders and that is the team mentality – that is what we try to do around here,” Olnhoff stated.

tackle and battled his way across the goal line to make the score 28-28. Regina then won the game on a successful convert. While the turnover on downs was critical it was one of six that the Hilltops gave up. Regina had taken a 13-10 first half lead after scoring on a rushing TD and two field goals as a result of two fumbles and an interception in Hilltops territory. Hilltops first half points came on a field goal and a great end zone catch by receiver Graham Unruh on a throw by QB Matt Karpinka, who had replaced starter Jared Andreychuk. Saskatoon had built a second half lead with a field goal, a Regina safety and passing TDs from Karpinka to John Trumpy and Coleman Young. These were set up thanks to the running of Andre Lalonde, who rushed for 257 yards on 31 carries in the game. A disappointed Lalonde talked about the unsuccessful gamble. “He (coach Tom Sargent) put the ball in our hands and expects us to get that push,” said Lalonde. “We have a great O-line. We were running the ball good all night. He expects us to make that play and we didn’t.” Lalonde said the team expects to win every game and are looking for different results when they travel to Winnipeg this weekend to play the Rifles. The Toppers will then make successive trips to Edmonton to first play the Huskies, then the Wildcats. Saskatoon’s next home game is Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 when they host the Wildcats.

The Saskatoon Blades are returning to the Legends Centre in Warman. The Blades will host the Prince Albert Raiders in a pre-season game at the Legends Centre on Saturday, September 14. This is the second year that Warman has hosted a WHL exhibition game. Tickets cost $10 and are general admission seating on a first come, first served basis. All proceeds from ticket sales go to Warman
Minor Hockey. Last year the game was a sellout in Warman, so make sure you get your tickets as soon as possible. It was a great game too, with the Blades downing the Raiders by a score of 6-3. To get tickets, either stop in at the Saskatoon Blades office at Credit Union Centre, or you can head to the Legends Centre in Warman. The arena is located at 701 Centennial Boulevard, four blocks north of Central Street.

Helmet and bikes a winning combination in Warman safety program By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
A program aimed at encouraging kids to wear helmets while cycling is gaining in popularity every year in Warman. And that’s a good thing, according to Kelvin Ooms, a member of the Warman Fire Department and Coordinator of the Summer Bicycle Helmet Safety Awareness program “This initiative has been going on since 2005,” said Ooms. “It’s been a success every year. I’ve been part of it for two years, and each time we do this we get lots of acknowledgement from the parents and the kids. It’s good to see them wearing their helmets, because they really do reduce the risk of serious injuries.” As part of the program, the Warman Fire Department personnel hand out coupons for slushies supplied by local businesses to children seen wearing helmets while riding their bikes during the summer months. At the end of the summer, helmets and bikes are awarded as prizes to children whose names are entered in a draw. Last week, the lucky winners were awarded their prizes at a ceremony in front of the Warman Fire Hall. The
recipients of the helmets included Elianne Gauthier, Connor Wall, Brody Beason, Sofia Laskowski and Brendan Cey. Bicycle winners were Brooklyn Knights and Ryan Kasel. Representatives of the local busineses that support the program, including the Warman Co-op and Warman Corner Store, were also at the award ceremony. The bikes and helmets were donated by Canadian Tire. Ooms says as a first responder, he sees numerous incidents where helmets have made all the difference. Just recently, he said, the Warman Fire Department responded to an incident where a six-year old boy was struck by a truck while riding his bicycle near Prairie Oasis Park in Warman. The child did not sustain serious injuries, largely because the helmet he was wearing absorbed the impact. “If this boy had not been wearing a helmet, we’d be reporting a very different story today,” said Ooms. “The helmet showed very evident signs of impact, whether it was from the truck or the ground, but I’m happy to report this little youngster is doing quite well, and that is due to the fact he was wearing a helmet.”

Langham mayor Bev Panas and artist Paige Yellowlees prepare to cut the ribbon while librarian Lana Buddecke unveils the Dr. Seuss corner at the Langham Library
Shaunovan II
The Cat in the Hat finds a ‘purr-fect’ home at Langham library By TERRY PUGH
tpugh@ccgazette.ca
The Langham Library has a fresh new look thanks to the unveiling of its “Dr. Seuss Corner.” The artwork on the walls, featuring the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, Horton the elephant and other unforgettable characters from Dr. Seuss books, was drawn and painted by 16-year-old Paige Yellowlees of Langham. At the light-hearted ribboncutting ceremony, Langham librarian Lana Buddecke said she and her fellow librarians Janet Weiss and Elaine Ewert had been dreaming about a story-telling corner for many years. But it wasn’t until this past summer that they discovered Paige Yellowlees’ talents. “Paige was voluntering on Thursdays and I asked her if she could draw something,” said Buddecke. “I didn’t realize how well she could draw and paint. All we told her was:
‘here is your corner. Draw some Dr. Seuss characters.’ This is her creation. Isn’t it wonderful?” Langham mayor Beverly Panas, sporting a fetching red and white Cat in the Hat chapeau, was on hand to help the young artist cut the rib-
bon with a pair of oversize scissors. Fittingly, two youngsters dressed as “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” held the ribbon. Danica Lorer of Langham, an award-winning writer and storyteller, entertained the roomful of youngsters following the official opening.
