RM to bring resolutions to SARM convention

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca The Rural Municipality of Corman Park intends to bring several resolutions to the Regina Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) convention, which takes place March 7 to 10.

The first resolution deals with property classifications. RM councilors would like to see a “recreational” classification added to the existing list of eight classes presently on the list.

Certain properties that currently operate under a commercial and industrial designation would benefit.

The recreational class of property would include land used for outdoor recreational activities and facilities such as golf, swimming pool, driving range, gun range, paintball, horseback riding, camping and the like.

Adam Tittemore, RM administrator, said the idea is to achieve property valuation that is fair and equitable and more suitable to the uses of the property.

The change in classification would be effective across the province, and applicable only to the land, not to improvements on the land.

A second resolution reflects a concern with the inappropriate disposal of used oil and antifreeze material.

The proposed Recycling Return Incentive Rate Increase arose from a motion put forward by Councilor Beauchemin in December.

A third resolution addresses inter-jurisdictional land acquisition in the province.

When urban municipalities acquire land in other or adjacent municipalities it has implications for economic development in the municipality from which the land was acquired.

The resolution points to existing legislation in Alber-

ta that requires such acquisitions to be approved by the government of the municipality in which the land is acquired. It promotes transparency and collaboration in economic growth.

Hospitals struggle to cope with high patient volumes

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca Emergency departments at Saskatoon hospitals are strained to the limit due to high patient volumes and staff shortages.

It’s a situation that is likely to continue for another week to ten days, says Sandra Blevins, vice-president of integrated health services for the Saskatoon Health Region (SHR).

At a news conference at Royal University Hospital (RUH) on Thursday, February 25, Blevins said the health region is dealing with a “critical overcapacity situation” at both RUH and St. Paul’s Hospital emergency departments. While the “surge” in admissions was anticipated due to the wave of influenza cases currently peaking in the area, hospitals are dealing with a high number of trauma cases as well.

The situation is complicated by the fact that a large number of SHR staff members are sick, leaving many scheduled shifts unfilled.

Blevins said while the surge in emergency cases has been evident for the past three days, the sheer number of patients during the early morning hours of February 25 prompted SHR managers to issue a message to the public.

“We had a large number of patients this morning at both RUH and St. Paul’s,” said Blevins.

“At RUH we had 35 patients waiting to be admitted and over 70 waiting for active treatment. That was a very high volume, and when it’s that full, it makes it very difficult for the staff to work. There’s a shortage of space.”

Arrangements were made to relocate patients from the

emergency departments into areas where they could receive appropriate care, said Blevins.

Two surgeries were postponed at RUH because of concerns over post-operative care for the patients involved, she noted.

The measures taken on Thursday morning provided some “breathing room” for emergency room staff, she added.

“We felt we were only one trauma patient away from being in a very bad situation,” she said.

The overcapacity problem is not limited to emergency departments, said Blevins.

Other departments, including intensive care, pediatric intensive care, pediatrics, and psychiatry and mental health are also full.

She said the situation is serious, but the SHR is doing its best with the resources it has to ensure patients receive quality care.

She appealed to SHR staff who are available to work shifts over the weekend to contact their managers.

“We will need you this week,” said Blevins, in reference to SHR staff. “We have about 70 unfilled shifts heading into the weekend.”

Blevins said patient intake volume last reached numbers this high in January, 2015. Much of the increased patient load is due to the influenza wave, and she expects the numbers to drop in about ten days.

The SHR is utilizing facilities in surrounding communities as much as possible, she added.

She urged people to see their family physicians and utilize urgent care clinics where appropriate.

“People need to know that emergency rooms are very busy right now,” she said.

Province allocates $16.6M for relocatable classrooms

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca Education Minister Don Morgan paid a visit to George Vanier School on February 26 to announce funding for education in the province, to the tune of $20 million. Besides the usual collection of media to hear Morgan were students in Grades 4 and 5, sitting on the gym floor, a reminder of the importance of a quality education.

The lion’s share of the funding, $16.6 million, will go toward adding 46 new relocatable classrooms to school divisions across the province. It will also allow for nine other relocatables to be moved from one school to another.

“Our government believes this investment is vital in order to continue supporting schools and communities that are facing enrolment pressures during this unprecedented time of growth,” said Minister Morgan.

This new funding will be targeted to help schools that are cur-

rently experiencing over capacity.

Ministry officials are currently reviewing applications from school divisions and will be providing notification of allocations based on the number of requests they receive. Morgan said quite a number will be in Saskatoon.

Previous relocatable classrooms were built in two sections that had to be bolted together. They tended to experience leakage, possible mold and problems with air quality. Current products are very well built; they’re warm, dry and secure, according to Morgan.

Each one has its own heating and ventilation system, something users appreciate.

“Today’s relocatable classrooms are modern high quality learning environments for students and teachers. They are built to the same specifications or better than our permanent classrooms.

They’re not a long term solution but do allow our school divisions the flexibility to accommodate changes in enrolment as communities grow and develop in

Saskatchewan,” said Morgan.

Some consideration is given to whether permanent classrooms are a better option in some situations. Morgan said the cost for building a relocatable classroom is about $340,000 to $350,000, and the cost of building a permanent classroom is roughly the same.

Diane Boyko, chair of the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board of Education said this is a welcome announcement as it will open up some capacity for schools in the division.

New schools currently being built, such as Holy Trinity Catholic School in Warman and Holy Mary in Martensville, have a long term capacity of 800 to 900 students. Boyko said these schools will also accommodate relocatable classrooms if and when that need arises.

The province also announced $3.4 million in grant money for CommunityNet to provide for continued bandwidth upgrades in schools across the province, essential in today’s classrooms.

“We’re looking at a budget shortfall of $254,000 which would have to be made up, but it’s a very manageable budget,” said Tittemore. The 2016 budget is $34,011 higher than the 2015 budget. “Year over year, that’s a very reasonable increase.”

RM Financial officer Craig Clements said it is a very good budget, very accurate. It reflects an optimistic outlook.

Councilors approved the budget on February 22.

Warman entrepreneur wins ‘Just Watch Me’ video contest

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca A sweet win went to Sweet Crete Décor of Warman from the ‘Just Watch Me’ video contest on February 17. They announced that owner Janie Rae Gaudet, won the Start-up Entrepreneur award for Saskatchewan. Gaudet said it was “pretty cool” to win.

“It feels fantastic! You’ve got so many people supporting you that you didn’t know,” she said. Sweet Crete Décor is a business Gaudet started last year that creates decorative artistic concrete pieces.

Her video was chosen by a panel of judges from the Saskatchewan and Manitoba business community. Gaudet won a cash prize of $250 as well as business prizes to assist her in her start-up success. Membership in the Warman Chamber of Commerce was paid as well as her membership in Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan. She also got a couple of passes to workshops presented by Square One, a government business resource centre.

Just Watch Me is an initiative of the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (EDP). The organization helps people with disabilities or ongoing health conditions start businesses in rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan. EDP programs are delivered by Community Futures, which provides business advice, training, mentorship and access to repayable business loans for

In 2010, Gaudet suffered a spinal cord injury when a ladder she was on fell over.

Since then she’s been trying to get her life back on track.

“At first they told me I would probably be completely paralyzed,” she said. But her prognosis turned out to be better than that. She is partially paralyzed and uses a wheelchair when out and about. At home she is able to get up out of the chair at times.

She spent last summer

and fall doing research and development, figuring out different recipes for different projects. She now has a line of products available.

“We offer products like bowls, high-end sinks and art as well as wall panels and backsplashes with plans to expand to water wall features.”

Gaudet said she’s always been very artistic and loves creating. She got interested in concrete through her brother who is a homebuilder. “I started going to the

World of Concrete Expo in Vegas every year and it really opened my eyes to the amazing potential there is working with concrete. And I thought this is something I can do in my own garage to start with.”

There are lingering psychological effects from her injury, like self-esteem issues.

“That’s something I have to work on. I’m naturally very optimistic and a very ‘get-her-done’ kind of girl. I’m not as confident as I was. I’m confident in my stuff, but not as confident in myself.” She says people do look at you differently if they first meet you in a wheel chair. She suspects they might be unsure of her abilities.

“I’m working on getting those voices to quiet down in the back of my head that try and tell me I can’t do something. We all do that whether we’re healthy or not,” she said.

Gaudet’s 24-year-old daughter and her husband live door next to her. She also has a seven-year-old daughter to care for and a husband to be there for.

Next year, Gaudet is going to try for the Just Watch Me “Seasoned Entrepreneurs” category. She has started businesses before but not with a proper plan.

“Starting up a new business and creating something is always very exciting. Winning this award

makes the whole thing feel less daunting.”

“There is a lot to know about concrete. It is a life force on its own,” she said.

Maybe working with concrete and winning this

award will help Gaudet build back more of her own life force.

“Knowing you’ve got a cheering section and family support. It feels fantastic,” she said.

The new porn and other language ‘reassignments’

Porn is ubiquitous.

Not just its worst versions, but increasingly, emerging new versions HILARY as well.

Take food porn, for ex- KLASSEN ample. Who doesn’t sal- Lifestyle Files ivate when presented with glamourous and spectacular visuals of food displayed in tantalizing ways? This is what we frequently see on cooking shows, advertisements, blogs and Facebook posts – a glorification of food that arouses the desire to eat.

Word porn is essentially the love of literature and inspirational quotes or stories. People into word porn are awestruck by the power of words and love to share their findings. Word porn has a couple of namesake websites, and samplings of it can be found on Pinterest. But perhaps we should worry when a certain presidential hopeful whose name rhymes with “rump” says, “I know words, I have the best words.” Not likely.

Pain porn, is a different beast, with past and new associations. The term was recently used by a UK writer. Carole Cadwalladr said in an op-ed that the Oscar nominated movie, ‘The Revenant,’ was ‘meaningless pain porn,’ with pointless violence and pain as spectacle. The movie perhaps veers to gratuitous pain, the kind pre-selected from the ‘holy grail’ of a true story, and designed to finally deliver the elusive Oscar to Leo DiCaprio.

Language itself is a creature of space and time, constantly evolving and adapting to meet changing times. Words like ‘sick’ and ‘hook-up’ have had new informal meanings assigned. Sick can now refer to something that is ‘awesome cool,’ or crazy cool, or ‘insane.’ Hook-up need not have anything to do with electronics but rather, the meeting up of friends or the beginning of a relationship.

Pimping can mean making something impressive or showy, like a vehicle or a man shed or garage. We like to say its “pimped out.” And who knew that ‘fizzle’ used to mean the act of producing quiet flatulence?

Selfie is a recent ‘word of the year’ and has been added to several dictionaries. As technology advances, more language related to it is added, and more quickly than in the past.

Sometimes new lingo surfaces without due consideration and feels thrust upon us, like a worn stone retrieved from the gutters of the society and pocketed without being polished. But sometimes new terms are beautifully conceived and draw us willingly into the future.

Research tells us that language influences culture.

Adding or subtracting terms can shape the way we see the world, so paying attention is not a bad idea.

For those holding out, sighing for pre-digital days of words appearing exclusively and for all time on paper, it may finally be time to toss that 60s dictionary in file thirteen. The world is a different place now than when those pages were printed.

Did I say toss? I meant recycle.

in oil but also a consistent framework for budget revenue upon which it could determine the appropriate level of expenditures.

Alas, that’s a little too idealistic in today’s hardball world of politics.

After MacKinnon’s presentation to cabinet, the Wall government couldn’t even find the suggested $100 million in “seed money” to get the fund going.

And what we saw in the last budget was the former finance minister going to the open market to borrow $700 million for capital infrastructure spending; money that will have to be repaid with interest.

It’s also money that could have come from a heritage fund, had some past government been wise enough 10 years ago to set aside some cash we collected during the boom years.

So here we sit today; with a billion dollar deficit in 2015-16 when you add that $700 million in borrowing to the $262.2 million shortfall that new Finance Minister Kevin Doherty actually does acknowledge.

We got into this mess in the 2015-16 budget because non-renewable resource revenue fell by $388 million

from the budget projections 11 months ago and because spending has increased by $100 million because of things like unforeseen forest fire fighting costs.

These numbers are likely to only get worse in the third-quarter update of the 2015-16 budget. And at the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention last month, Wall guaranteed another deficit for 2016-17.

However, nothing offered by the NDP so far suggests they would be any more fiscally responsible. In fact, the NDP has told us nothing about how they would spend our own money.

We need more discipline in government spending and that will only come if we force politicians running for office to talk about how these guidelines should be put in place.

The way to put those guidelines in place begins with talking about a Heritage Fund.

That’s what we should be talking about during this election campaign.

Note: In my column two weeks ago I incorrectly stated the cost of the Boundary Dam carbon capture and storage. It is $1.5 billion.

Wanuskewin seeks UNESCO World Heritage Site designation

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca Wanuskewin Heritage Park is launching a campaign to become designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

Wanuskewin is already a widely-known provincial and national heritage site and one of the top three tourist attractions in the Saskatoon region. But gaining international heritage recognition would boost its significance on the global stage and highlight the importance of First Nations culture and history, according to Wanuskewin Board Chair Candace WasacaseLafferty.

At a news conference at the Wanuskewin Centre on Friday, February 26, Wasacase-Lafferty said the pursuit of the UNESCO heritage site designation would fulfill the original vision for the park.

“Our journey is just beginning,” she said. “Our announcement today is an early first step, and we look forward to one day welcoming the world to Wanuskewin.”

UNESCO World Heritage Sites include outstanding examples of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, and represent part of the common heritage of human-

kind. Examples of UNESCO Heritage Sites include the pyramids of Egypt, Yellowstone National Park in the United States and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Gros Morne atonal Park in Newfoundland is one such site in Canada; but Wanuskewin would become the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saskatchewan if the campaign is successful.

(Saskatchewan does, however, have a UNESCO World Biosphere Site - a separate category - already designated. Redberry Lake received that designation over ten years ago.)

Saskatoon Silver Springs MLA Ken Cheveldayoff said the provincial government is supportive of the campaign, and noted that the sod-turning for the site more than 20 years ago marked a significant step toward recognizing the importance of First Nations culture and history.

The renewal project includes preserving the ecology and biodiversity of the site, expanding the land base to meet UNESCO criteria and introducing a small herd of bison to their native prairie habitat.

Saskatoon Tribal Council Chief Felix Thomas said the campaign is two-fold: to convince UNESCO of the merits of Wanuskewin as a desig-

Thomas said there has been no funding commitments at this time from the federal and provincial governments.

PotashCorp Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Wayne Brownlee said the park has “extraordinary value” to all Canadians, and added the campaign is committed to “building an internationally-recognized centre that will be sustainable in the long term.”

Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison said the designation of Wanuskewin as a UNESCO site fits into the

long-term vision for the city of Saskatoon and the region as a whole; and noted that one of the goals of the campaign is to fence a portion of the park to accommodate a herd of bison.

Thomas said the resilience of bison as a species is inspiring and is symbolic of the recognition of indigenous cultures in Canada.

At one time there were an estimated 70 million bison roaming the North American plains.

A few decades ago, their numbers dwindled to about 500 animals.

There are now estimated to be 500,000 bison in Canada and over one million in the United States.

Dundurn appoints EMO Coordinator

“So, it can’t happen here, eh?” was an old slogan from Emergency Planning Canada after a train derailment of chemicals in Mississauga, Ontario on November 10, 1979 that brought Canada’s attention to emergency planning for disasters in communities.

Federal and provincial governments passed laws that obliged municipal governments to implement Community Emergency Plans and appoint Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) Coordinators to maintain those plans.

Ray Moskowec is a semiretired Canadian Forces member with 22 years of service., He is currently employed as a commissionaire at CFB Dundurn. He has vast experience as an EMO Coordinator from his previous employment as a municipal administrator and EMO coordinator for the communities of Camperville, Manitoba; Green Lake, Saskatchewan; Kamsack, Saskatchewan and Vanscoy, Saskatchewan in the 1980s

Martensville approves Future Growth Plan

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca The City of Martensville formally adopted the municipality’s Future Growth Plan at a regular council meeting on Tuesday, February 23.

The comprehensive document was prepared by Associated Engineering Consultants, and consisted of four phases of study: a demographic analysis which also included land use requirements; servicing agreements and future growth plan scenario; fiscal impacts of growth; and a growth management strategy.

One of the objectives for growth in Martensville is to “enhance the small city at-

mosphere” while enhancing development through a mix of land uses.

The guiding principles in the report include a phased approach focusing on the logical extension of municipal infrastructure, promoting “walkable neighbourhoods”, and a variety of transportation choices.

According to the report, Martensville’s population could reach 20,750 by 2040 and 32,000 by 2065. The larger regional population which includes Warman and Osler could reach 38,730 by 2030.

With the increase in population, a variety of housing and business opportunities are important, according to

the report.

RENTAL RATES SET

Martensville City Council also adopted revised rental rates for civic facilities including the Martensville Aquatic Centre, Martensville Athletic Pavilion, and North Ridge Centennial Community Centre.

RCMP BUILDING

Renovation work is continuing on the RCMP building in Martensville. The hope is that the renovations will be completed by the end of March, according to City Manager Scott Blevins. Police traffic services will set up an office there in May.

Warman seals deal for road The City of Warman has approved a funding agreement with the provincial Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure to upgrade a portion of the old Highway 305 that is now within the city limits.

The portion of the road is located on the western

edge of Warman. The funding agreement, which was approved by Warman City Council at its February 8 meeting, provides for future rehabilitation that will be required to bring the roadway (also known as Central Street) up to city standards.

Warman City Council also

approved an amendment to the 20-year capital plan for the city’s fire department at its February 8 meeting. The amendment was necessary to allow for the purchase of the new ladder truck, slated to be delivered this spring.

The slumping loonie added a cost to the budgeted price.

The Martensville Community Expo set for April 1 and 2 is very close to selling out all its booths, according to organizers.

This event marks a change in the name from the Martensville Business Expo to the Community Expo. It’s a way of opening the event up to the entire community.

Another big change is the venue. It moves from the curling rink to the Martensville Athletic Pavilion.

This facility offers a bigger, brighter location with more than double the number of available exhibitor spaces.

Other new events include: The KidZone – A supervised children’s play area; A Taste of Martensville – Back this year is a delec-

A collective voice for parity

At the municipal level I am seeing great movement in parity, however at the provincial and federal the percentages are still very low.

When I started my political walk it was mainly male dominated.

Warman’s mayor was a male, our MLA was a male and our MP was a male. Now, just ten years later, all three are strong, passionate and caring females.

In gym class, she went up and down those thick ropes hanging from the ceiling ‘like a little monkey,’ she says. Then came the reality check. Her PhysEd teacher, who was a man, said, ‘you can’t beat the boys, it’s not good to beat the boys.’

“I thought, what the heck?

I was beating my brothers all the time,” she said. That was in the 60s. “But it stuck with me,” she said.

Fortunately, it hasn’t prevented her from becoming a successful business woman and politician. Harwood was named one of the ten most influential women in Saskatchewan by Sask Business Magazine, and is running for another term as reeve.

She continues to keep pace with, or surpass, the boys, not that boys are the measure. Harwood happens to be a passionate citizen and that translates into her civic leadership; it’s what drives her desire to bring change.

That passion extends to International Women’s Day. She views it a bit like Mother’s Day – basically it’s every day. But having the special day creates a necessary pause for reflection.

The 60s are approaching ancient history. Equality for women has made gains. But women have more territory to claim, more high ground to reach.

Harwood points to issues at home and oceans away.

She contrasts women overseas, whose struggle in some regions is the daily urgency just to keep their children alive, with women in North America who may struggle with which pair of shoes to purchase. She’s

There are lingering concerns worldwide about women who continue to be regarded as property, some

of whom are forced to undergo genital mutilation, as well as women in our own back yard who regularly experience domestic violence.

Stats Canada reported in 2013 that Saskatchewan has the highest rate of domestic violence of all the provinces.

“Help is needed all around the world,” says Harwood.

“When I look at third

Women understand that if they made that same choice they would be hounded by criticism. Harwood says media reports, like those about presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits, are partly to blame.

“They report about what the woman had on, like it mattered, and with the man they report what he was saying,” says Harwood.

“Forget how she looks and what she has on. Listen to what she’s saying and look at what she’s doing.”

Harwood says when she was growing up in small town Ontario, the local bar had separate entrances for men and women, and they drank separately.

Today, the genders happily drink together, but metaphorical degrees of separation remain between them, gaps in understanding and respect. Harwood says going forward, more men need to embrace the issues. Women need to support each other more, and help each other shine.

This week, Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short for her ‘unflinching’ look at honour killings in A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness. After seeing the film the prime minister of Pakistan said he will work to change laws to banish the practice, a major step forward in the respect and protection of women.

Outlaws edge Royals in Game 1 of FCHL semi-final

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca The Prairie Outlaws edged the Hague Royals 2-1 on Sunday, February 28 in Waldheim to win Round One in their best-of-five Fort Carlton Hockey League (FCHL) semi-final championship series.

But it wasn’t easy.

The Royals are a tough bunch. This was Hague’s third game in three nights; having played two doubleovertime provincial Senior A playoff games against the Lanigan Pirates on Friday and Saturday.

The Royals lost the Friday game 4-3 but won the Saturday contest 5-4 to take the best-of-three series against Lanigan and move on to the northern final this week against Rosetown. (The Royals won Game 1 against Lanigan by a score of 2-1.)

Balancing two championship runs at the same time is a challenge, but Royals captain Daniel Rauckman, says the team is up for it.

“We’ve been building for this for the past couple of years,” said Rauckman in an interview after the Sunday night game. “We want to win both series. They’re equally important.

“I thought it was a gutsy

effort by our guys tonight.

We’re all running on fumes right now after playing eleven periods of hockey over the weekend. But we’ve got a couple days off until Wednesday to prepare for the next game.”

For the Outlaws, who were bounced from provincials by Lanigan in the first round, the FCHL championship is the big prize.

The Outlaws are the FCHL defending champions and are gunning for their third straight league crown, having hoisted the trophy in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

Outlaws coaches Bruce Neufeld and Gary Schultz know their boys have their work cut out for them.

“Hague is a very tough team,” said Schultz. “We’re evenly-matched in every department: goal tending, defense and scoring.”

“It will be a tough series,” added Neufeld. “This game, we outshot them two to one but won by a single goal that we scored with just two minutes left in regulation.

Tonight we put up almost 50 shots and scored only twice, so that shows how strong Hague’s goaltender is.

“But we’re every bit as determined. We just have to keep putting pucks to the

net and finishing our chances.”

In Sunday’s game, Hague’s Tyler Karst put the Royals ahead 1-0 seven minutes into the opening period with a quick wrist shot from the top of the circle.

But that was the only chink in Prairie goaltender Aaron Stock’s armour, despite some good scoring

chances by the Royals’ forwards.

Hague goalie Graham Hildebrand, meanwhile, was peppered with pucks. The only ones that beat him were a slapshot from the blue line by the Outlaws’ Chris Durand early in the second period; and a wellplaced shot by Torey Stott with under two minutes in

the final frame.

Both teams’ rosters are loaded with high-calibre athletes who are used to making precision plays.

There weren’t many mistakes by either side during a game that saw a lot of backand-forth action.

But there’s no love lost between these squads, and it’s likely things will heat up as

the series goes along. Game Two is slated for Wednesday, March 2 in Hague.

The schedule for Hague’s provincial Senior A northern final series with Rosetown was not finalized by press deadline. The other FCHL semi-final series features Bruno and Shellbrook.

Scores and schedules were not available.

Warman, Martensville tangle in Pee Wee A northern final The table is set for the provincial Pee Wee A northern final playoff series between the Martensville Marauders and Warman Wildcats.

The Marauders cruised to two straight victories over the Battlefords Barons last week, winning 6-5 and 13-4.

Warman had polished off Star City the week before to advance to the northern final.

Game One in the series is slated for Thursday, March 10 in Martensville at 7:00 p.m.

Game Two is in Warman at the Diamond Arena on Saturday, March 12 at 7:45 p.m.

The winner will advance to the provincial Pee Wee A championship final series against the winner of the southern final.

PEE WEE C

The Delisle Bruins Pee Wee team was bounced from the Provincial Pee Wee C playoffs by Hillmond last week. Delisle lost the first game 5-4 and tied the second game 1-1.

The Clavet Cougars are likewise out of the hunt for a provincial Pee Wee hockey

championship after losing in two straight games to Big River. Clavet lost 8-6 and 4-3.

BANTAM A

The Warman Wildcats Bantam A team advanced to the northern final series against Lumsden. Warman beat Martensville in two straight games by scores of 3-1 and 6-0 to earn the right to move on.

After defeating the Saskatoon Stallions 2-1 in an exciting double overtime classic at the Martensville Arena on Tuesday, February 23, the Vipers then clinched the best of three series with a 7-3 victory over the Stallions at the Kinsmen

Arena on Friday, February 26.

With the win they move on to play the Saskatoon Outlaws. Game One of the series was played Tuesday, March 1 at Kinsmen Arena.

Results of that contest were not available at press deadline.

Game Two is on Thursday, March 3 at the Warman Legends Centre.

Game Three, if necessary, is slated for Sunday, March 6 at Kinsmen Arena in Saskatoon.

Box lacrosse comes to Warman

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca The fastest sport on two feet is about to get ramped up in Warman. A new collaboration with Saskatoon Box Lacrosse will bring the high-intensity game to the city. The inaugural season will launch March 8 at the Legends Centre with a “Learn to Play” night.

“It’s Saskatoon Box Lacrosse that’s expanding out to Warman,” said coordinator, Jody Moskal. Unlike field lacrosse, box lacrosse is played indoors in a hockey arena with sideboards and a smaller stick.

Moskal said it’s exactly like what we’ve been seeing with the Rush, Saskatchewan’s new professional lacrosse team.

“In fact, we’re trying real hard to get at least one of the Rush players to come out to our Learn to Play night.” Moskal said.

“We’ll definitely have some of the SWAT players who were the elite midget-age players,” she added. They’ll be coming out to show the kids how to play.

Saskatoon Box is bringing out all of the sticks and equipment for the night.

Registrations will be taken on ‘Learn to Play’ night as well. Moskal senses there is pretty widespread interest. A number of registrations from local players have already been received through the Saskatoon website.

“We’re hoping to form at least one full team in each age group,” she said. The

The Saskatchewan Rush has generated a ton of interest in lacrosse since bringing their professional team to our province. Jodi Moskal is hoping to have a Rush player at the Learn to Play night to kick-off Warman lacrosse on March 8. season starts on April 1. For starters, all games will be played in Saskatoon while practices will be local.

“And then, if we get enough interest, the hope is to bring some of their games out here,” said Moskal.

Moskal’s son has played for the past two years in the city. She says there are a lot of kids doing that.

“It doesn’t make sense to have all these Warman kids scattered throughout Saskatoon teams, when we could put one of our own in.

They’d love to have us.”

Getting set up for lacrosse need not be expensive. Those who have a kid in hockey already have the gloves, shoulder pads and helmets, and most kids have running shoes. All they

need is the stick.

“Peewee age is 10-yearolds. Registration is $335 but $100 of that is raffle tickets you can resell,” said Moskal. The commitment is two days a week, ending in June, leaving weekends free for camping or cabin season.

As an indoor game, box lacrosse will never get rained out and kids won’t come home with wet, muddy feet, something Moskal definitely appreciates.

The Learn to Play Lacrosse night begins at 5:30 p.m. and will run for about an hour and a half.

Hard work pays off in overtime

By WAYNE SHIELS essenceofsask@gmail.com Saskatchewan fans lifted the roof off Sasktel Centre as the Rush played the Buffalo Bandits on Friday, February 26.

The home team scored three goals late in the fourth quarter to overcome a 16-13 deficit, sending the game into overtime. After both teams had good chances to end the game, Buffalo’s Mitch Jones scored his fifth goal of the game to give the visiting Bandits the victory.

The Rush were glad to erase that heartbreaking

defeat on Sunday as they again battled back from a deficit to send the game into overtime against the Roughnecks in Calgary on Sunday, February 28. This time the Rush came away victorious as Zack Greer scored his second goal of the game at 5:04 of the overtime.

Rush forward Robert Church had a great weekend, scoring 5 goals and adding 4 assists for a career high 9 points and earning second star of the game on Friday. He followed this with a 3 goal 3 assist performance in Calgary to earn

first star of the game.

Another great crowd of over 10,000 fans enjoyed Friday’s game. The Rush are solidly in fourth place in league attendance, demonstrating that the province has embraced the franchise.

The next game for the Rush is on Saturday, March 12 when they host the Georgia Swarm. The game has been designated First Nations Night as it will feature three of the Thompson brothers, Jeremy of the Rush and Miles and Lyle of the Swarm. Game time is 7:30 p,m,

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca Ellen Froese-Kooijenga is taking a page from 1960s folksingers as she hits the road with her guitar and a suitcase, playing a series of concerts during the month of March.

The talented singer-songwriter, who hails from a farm in the RM of Corman Park just north of Martensville, has made a name for herself as one-third of the band known as “In With the Old.” Last summer the band, which also includes Jaxon Lalonde and Kasia Thorlakson, headlined at the Northern Lights Bluegrass Festival.

She has two albums to her credit. In 2014 In With the Old released a CD entitled “Rollin’ on down the plains,” and late last year she put out a self-titled solo CD featuring her own material.

Froese-Kooijenga, who just turned 20, said she felt the time was right to branch out. Her first stop was in Brandon, Manitoba on March 1; with several stops in Ontario before finally ending up in Montreal.

“I’m touring for the first two weeks with a great musician from Edmonton named Luke Thomson, and then he’s going back home and I’m continuing on,” said Froese-Kooijenga. “I’ll be on the road all month and I’m very excited.”

She said the tour represented a new opportunity for her to grow, both personally and musically.

“I just kinda said hey, touring would be really good practice for me, and also I’d love to see more of Canada,” she said. “I’m 20 now, and I love travelling. I’m not in university yet, and so it seems like a really good time for me to hit the road. So I decided to go! I just sent out hundreds of emails to venues across Eastern Canada, and I was lucky enough to be able to book myself a tour!”

Police attended and found that a 37-year-old male from Borden lost control of his snow mobile, causing him to be thrown off.

He was transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of his minor injuries. There were no charges.

The following is the local media release for the Warman Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the week of February 22 – February 29, 2016.

On February 24 at 6:10 p.m. police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver in Warman. The caller reported that a male entered a business in Warman and appeared to be intoxicated. The male left in a vehicle in an unknown direction of travel. Police made patrols of the area, but were unable to locate any vehicles matching the description provided. There were no charges.

On February 25 at 11:00 a.m. police received a complaint of atwo- vehicle collision in Martensville.

Police attended and found that a vehicle driven by a 18-year-old male from Laird failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a vehicle driven by a 68-yearold male from Martensville. The 18-year-old male was issued a ticket for proceeding through an intersection before it

On February 23 at 8:30 a.m. police received a complaint of theft from a vehicle in Martensville.

The caller reported that someone stole a number of tools from a locked tool box in the back of his vehicle sometime over the weekend. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

On February 23 at 2:40 p.m. police received a complaint of mischief to a vehicle in Martensville.

The caller reported that someone smashed out the back window of their vehicle while parked outside of their residence. Nothing was taken from the vehicle. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

On February 23 at 5:30 p.m. police received a complaint of break, enter and theft from a residence in Langham. The caller reported that someone entered his apartment and stole a number of small items. Police attend-

ed the scene and obtained a statement from the owner of the residence. Investigation into this matter is ongoing.

On February 24 at 1:30 a.m. police received a complaint of a suspicious person entering vehicles in Warman. Police made patrols of the area and located a 19-year-old male and a youth, both from Warman. They were arrested and taken back to police cells where they were held for court the following morning on a number of theft related charges.

On February 24 at 11:30 a.m. police received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence in Martensville. A 42-yearold female reported that her 42-year-old boyfriend was intoxicated and causing problems in the residence. Police attended and arrested the male and transported him to police cells until he was sober.

There were no charges or injuries.

On February 24 at 11:20 p.m. police received a complaint of an intoxicated male causing problems at a business in Martensville. Police attended the location and located the 45-year-old male from Blaine Lake. He was arrested for breaching conditions of a court order and lodged in police cells until he was sober.

On February 26 at 11:30 p.m. police received a complaint of a loud party at a residence in Warman.

The caller reported that there were a number of people on the street drinking and making a lot of noise. Police made patrols of the area, but did not locate and people in the streets and no loud parties.

On February 28 at 12:05 a.m. police received a complaint of a disturbance at a residence in Warman. The caller reported that an intoxicated male came to the residence and was causing problems and refusing to leave. Police attended and arrested the 23-yearold male from Warman.

The male was on court ordered conditions and was held in police custody to appear in court the following morning. There were no injuries.

Local candidates set to hit the election campaign trail

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca With the provincial election writ expected to be dropped this week, candidates in local ridings are hitting the campaign trail in full stride.

The election is set for Monday, April 4, with advance polls running from March 29 to April 2.

The Gazette coverage area includes all, or large portions of, the constituencies of Martensville-Warman, Biggar-Sask Valley, Rosetown-Elrose, and Saskatoon Stonebridge-Dakota.

SASK PARTY

The governing Saskatchewan Party has a full slate of candidates in all provincial constituencies. In Martensville-Warman, incumbent Nancy Heppner, the Minister of Highways and Infrastructure is carrying the party’s colours. Incumbent Randy Weekes is the party’s representative in Biggar-Sask Valley; newcomer Bronwyn Eyre is running for the Sask Party in Saskatoon StonebridgeDakota and incumbent Jim Reiter is the Sask Party candidate in Rosetown-Elrose.

Darcy Robilliard is representing the Green Party in Martensville-Warman; while Rachel Gregoire is the party’s candidate in Rosetown-Elrose. Susan Merasty is carrying the Green Party colours in Saskatoon Stonebridge-Dakota and Ryan Lamarche is the candidate in Biggar-Sask Valley.

A 41-year-old Saskatoon man has been issued a speeding ticket with a $775 fine following a traffic stop last week.

On February 19, 2016, at approximately 8:00 p.m. a SPS Traffic Unit member spotted a Cadillac CTS traveling at a high rate of speed on the Circle Drive South Bridge near Valley Road.

The officer’s equipment clocked the speed at 193 km/ hr in what is a 90 km/hr zone.

The SPS reminds motorists to adhere to posted speed limits for their own safety and the safety of others using the roadways.

Trio arrested in drug bust Three men are facing drug and weapons charges after a month-long Saskatoon Integrated Drug Enforcement Street Team (SIDEST) investigation.

On January 29 members of SIDEST began an investigation into cocaine trafficking.

Police seized over 6 ounces of cocaine, a handgun, two loaded magazines and over $14,000 in cash.

All three men, ages 25, 30 and 32, are facing charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine. SIDEST is comprised of Saskatoon Police Service and RCMP ‘F’ Division.

Adrian Janssens is the Liberal Party candidate in the Rosetown-Elrose constituency in this election. Kevin Ber is the candidate in Saskatoon Stonebridge-Dakota. As of Monday, February 29, the party had not nominated candidates in the Martensville-Warman or Biggar-Sask Valley.

Young ball hockey players got into the spirit of the game during a day-long “Mini-Sticks Tournament” at the Legends Centre in Warman on Thursday, February 18. A total of 29 four-person teams with players ranging in age from 5 to 12 years took part in the non-competitive event.

The tournament was organized by the Warman Recreation and Community Services Department as part of a week-long series of events during the school division’s February break.

About a dozen youngsters rubbed shoulders with make-believe royalty on Wednesday, February 17 during a “Princess Party” at the Legends Centre in Warman.
