Thomas Edison (Founder of Edison General Electric Company) J.P. Morgan (Financial Spearhead) Elihu Thomson (Electrical Engineer and Inventor) Edwin J. Houston (Electrical Engineer and Businessman)

ORIGIN OF GENERAL ELECTRIC

Two electric companies, Edison General Electric Company and the Thomson-Houston Company, merged to form GE. Both businesses were formerly competitors, but the two companies were able to innovatively design together through shared patents and technologies.

Charles A. Coffin (Investor of Thomson-Houston Company)

GE was initially founded to help the growth of electricity in industrial America. The company was responsible for the innovative growth in multiple disciplines, such as lighting, military equipment, power systems, transportation, medical devices, plastics, and information services. The company tried to expand by buying already existing financial companies, such as RCA and NBC, but these acquisitions detrimentally impacted the company during the 2008 financial crisis. In recent years, GE has sold many of their smaller company divisions to decrease debt, and they are focusing the company’s efforts on power, healthcare, aviation, and renewable energy. 2
