Wheel Thing Makers
Wheel Thing Makers is a not-for-profit makers organisation established in mid-2015. It is a knowledge exchange platform and makers base combining the three facets of creativity, applied technology, and social innovation, and focusing on the creation of self-driven and power-assisted devices. There are currently five core members, each responsible for different projects, social experiments, and daily operations. Wheel Thing Makers hopes to become a platform for resource and technology sharing and exchange. Through taking the initiative to connect neighbours within the community, and the dissemination and sharing of bike creation, it hopes to encourage more people to dedicate themselves to innovating society and improving lives. Gary Chan, Hong Kong bicycle inventor, known by the press as “bike madman”. For the past 8 years, he has spent his spare time focusing on bicycle inventions. So far, he already has 9 products to his name, some of which have obtained product invention patents. His works have been exhibited in more than 20 major exhibitions or events. Gary has also participated in creative projects on the design and creation of bicycles on the invitation of various organisations, such as The Link’s Bike Dragon Dance (2015) and PMQ’s Merry Bike Round (2015). He is beginning his venture into school campuses, sharing his creative process and stories with students. Paddy Ng, founder and project director of Wheel Thing Makers. He currently works on design, social policy analysis, and social impact assessment in a consulting firm. Outside his day job, he puts on the identity of a “maker”. Paddy believes that active implementation of community projects is the only way to stimulate social innovation, and that through creating “socially driven wheel things”, he could test whether social resources can be used more effectively, thereby improving lives. Paddy leads Wheel Thing Makers in collaborative efforts with various bodies on the creation of cycling equipment, organisation of community workshops, and promotion of the maker culture in schools. He also promotes related social policies like bike friendliness and local food trucks through the creation of “wheel things”.

With upcycling construction unused materials, we provide one-stop solutions for seniors which extend the living at home and enhance the quality of life for aging. There are huge market needs for renovating the home for the elderlies who have suffered from the chronical illness like stroke or dementia. However, in the current systems, renovation advice is suggested by therapists who do not have technical experience; the work is delivered by technical workers who do not get adequate education level to understand the therapists reports; and the medical devices and supplies not easily found. The basic idea of Longevity Design House is to provide integrated solutions including these areas. We define Longevity Design House is a kind of system innovations since all elements in the solutions provided are existing at the moment and we act as a platform to consolidate them with a better and more effective way.
