CCLF E-NEWSLETTER OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, ISSUES & FEATURES Winter/2010
CCLF Expanding Building for Sustainability Program serves Chicagoland community developers
CCLF has been committed to supporting environmentally sustainable projects throughout the Chicago metropolitan region since we published our first Guide to Building for Sustainability in 2001. Since then, CCLF's Building for Sustainability program has continued to grow. In 2009, CCLF converted our guide into the format of a website resource at greenaffordable.org. The site contains resources and tools for developers who want to incorporate "green" technology in their projects, and is updated as new technologies and strategies evolve. CCLF hired Elizabeth Richards (LEED Green Associate) as our Vice President of Technical Assistance & Sustainability in 2010, giving the program even more capacity than ever before. CCLF is working with regional efforts to provide energy efficiency retrofit financing, including the Center for Neighborhood Technology, Lake County, and the Kane County Revolving Loan Fund for Energy Efficiency. "This is such an active time for Chicago in the areas of sustainability, energy efficiency and healthy communities," says Richards. "We're excited to bring new resources to our clients and their projects, and I particularly look forward to utilizing our partnerships to move new initiatives forward." PNC Invests $2 Million
New investment will support stabilization efforts PNC Bank recently made a new $2 million investment in CCLF's loan pool. This new investment will increase CCLF's ability to provide critical capital to communities that need it most. The new investment will primarily support CCLF's lending in the City of Chicago's Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP), helping to meet our liquidity needs for this initiative. "As a CCLF investor, PNC is helping to bring economic prosperity and stability to more neighborhoods throughout metropolitan Chicago," says Tony Smith, Market Manager at PNC. "We are excited to support CCLF's stabilization efforts, which NSP home in Garfield Park. (Photo: will help to preserve previous community Steve Becker) investments and promote new growth in these communities." CCLF provides NSP loans to qualified developers, who then rehab foreclosed homes in targeted neighborhoods, getting them back on the market as soon as possible.
Carbon Nation Film Screening
Film discusses solutions-based approach to climate change issues CCLF recently partnered with the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) to host a screening of the recent documentary Carbon Nation, produced by CNT board member Karen Weigert. Carbon Nation is a positive, solutionsbased film about tackling climate change while boosting the economy, increasing energy security and promoting good health. More than 40 guests took in the film, and we received feedback that it was "inspiring" and "opened a discussion about what I can do to help." CNT, one of CCLF's regional partners, is a leader in the promotion of urban sustainability, providing research and services in transportation and community development, energy, natural resources and climate change. CNT Energy, a division of CNT, was recently selected by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to coordinate the implementation of a $25 million federal grant for energy efficiency retrofits over the next three years. For more information about this and other CNT programs, visit www.cnt.org. To find out more about Carbon Nation screenings and the documentary itself, visit carbonnationmovie.com.
