Maywood— Growing up is not easy, especially in these uncertain times; it is even more difficult when young people lack needed guidance, support or resources. Ivan Riley was determined to make a difference, so he began to sponsor outings and activities for local youth. He soon recognized the need for a more formal organization that would help at-risk youth negotiate the challenges, but also enjoy the fun, of growing up.

The goal is to help young people become responsible, successful adults...who can also enjoy their lives and make their dreams come true. — Ivan Riley Executive Director

Maybe that is why founding executive director, Riley, dubbed his project, The Dream Center. When Riley needed a facility, the late Dr. George & Camille Sassu, longtime Maywood residents, stepped up to the plate and donated a former animal hospital. Unfortunately, the Dream Center fell into jeopardy when the facility was assessed incorrectly and the property taxes were subsequently purchased by one of Cook County’s largest tax buyers. After an arduous legal battle, CCLF worked with The Dream Center

Riley envisions a community/youth center that offers parenting classes, entrepreneurship training, literacy and computer classes, even “rites of passage” programs for young boys. against a looming deadline, and extended a $51,000 loan to pay outstanding tax arrears; as well as provide additional monies for required buildout that would facilitate a much needed child care center in the facility. After overcoming its legal hurdles and opening the child care center, what is in store for The Dream Center? “A family fun center, additional after-school programs, a bowling alley, and possibly a skating rink,” says Riley. In collaboration with the Greater Food Depository, the center will also provide emergency food assistance to families in need.
