I am so happy to say that the state of Illinois now has a budget! The pressure of this financial strain has been substantial on both our university and those of our fellow public media stations. I hope that we will soon find relief after our two-year stalemate. But while this new budget is deeply appreciated on the state level, funding on a federal level remains in jeopardy. Congress still has the opportunity to deplete funding for public media. I encourage you to continue the momentum from this latest budgetary win. Contact your federal legislators and tell them why public media is important to you. In the meantime, we will continue to provide the best programming we can. In fact, we were recently the recipients of 7 awards for television and radio specials. You can read more about these awards on pages 18-19 of this issue. We will also continue to educate the next generation of public media listeners, users, and viewers through hands-on, real-world experience. Page 17 tells of the University of Illinois College of Media sponsored, intern-focused trip to the documentary marketplace Sunny Side of the Doc in France. While there, we solicited funding for our local and nationally-focused documentary projects. You and I know our immense value in the community, and we will continue to ensure that both our federal and state governments know it too.

Mid-American Gardener: A history
s The original set for Illinois Gardener.
Originally Illinois Gardener, the show began in 1992 as an effort to increase local programming at WILL. Jack Kelly (left), WILL’s executive producer at the time, wanted a show that would engage the local audience in a personal way. Dianne Noland was a panelist for the first show on May 21, 1992. She had recently done some U of I Garden Talk TV spots with Sandra Casserly and found her niche in front of the camera. “To me, television is just teaching on film, and I love teaching. The show was a perfect fit for my personality.” Seven years later, when Kelly moved on, Noland was chosen as the host. “I decide which panelists will be on the show each week, and I try to make sure we have a nice variety of backgrounds: landscaping, entomology, plant identification. Then an assistant sends viewer questions to the panelists according to their expertise.”
s The current Mid-American Gardener set.
Maintaining the show’s conversational, warm feel is a source of pride for Noland. “I’m already enthusiastic, but I get myself into high gear before every show. I want the audience to feel we are just sitting in their living room, casually talking about their gardens. The panelists are a large part of that; it’s a special talent to have both the wisdom of the subjects and the personality that is comfortable on live television.” PATTERNS • AUGUST 2017 1
“The earth laughs in flowers” –Ralph Waldo Emerson 25 years on the show. “I’m not completely leaving, as I may do an occassional video segment, but I will no longer host and produce.”

The long-time horticulture teacher at the University of Illinois is ready for her new freedom. “We do 48 shows a year, and I have been the host for 18 years. That’s a lot of shows! My family’s life has always been scheduled around Thursday evenings, so we are ready for some flexibility.”
just love that quote, because I think it’s true. It’s just so happy. The joy of flowers is universal,” says Dianne Noland. The current host of Mid-American Gardener, Noland has announced her retirement after
Noland plans to spend her time in her garden, naturally. “What I see as a lot of work, she considers fun,” says Dave, her husband of 37 years. “That’s true!” says Noland. “I’d spend a full eight hours in the garden every day if I could. I like seeing the results of my labor. I have a plan in mind of how I want things to look, but I’ve learned that the flowers always have a better plan. If I let the plants do what they do, let them sow, it’s always even better than I imagined.” And Noland’s garden has room to grow. She and her husband own 33 acres of property next to a river, half of which is wooded area. They enjoy being a part of nature in a quiet setting. “Just sitting on our front porch in the evening, we see a huge variety of birds, including great blue herons and egrets visiting our pond. There’s a fox den nearby, and we of course have a lot of deer visitors.” While she won’t be in homes every week, a little bit of Noland will still be seen on every show. “The set is loosely based on my front porch! So I’ll always be a part of things in spirit.”
“I love living in zone 5. I like having seasons, and my goal is to have something in bloom year round.” 2 PATTERNS • AUGUST 2017
“This is just my happy place. I once said in a job interview, ‘I’d like to have an arboretum and a television show.’ Well, I got my television show, and while my land doesn’t have an arboretum, I’m very pleased with the gardens I have created here.” PATTERNS • AUGUST 2017 3

Emerald isle
Hanging like an emerald jewel off the western edge of Europe, Ireland has always been a place apart—the last scrap of rock before the void of the Atlantic Ocean. Never conquered by the Romans, Ireland was for millennia the very edge of the known world for Europeans and the last stop for countless animals before they disappeared into the mists of the western ocean on their ceaseless journeys of life. Follow a unique, personal journey along one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world featuring the wildlife and wild places that make it so special. Wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson takes viewers on an authored odyssey along Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coast— the place he chooses to make his home after
30 years spent shooting some of the world’s most celebrated wildlife films. Ireland’s Wild Coast ends the PBS Summer of Adventure at 7 pm Wednesday, August 2.

A total solar eclipse
It’s the summer of 1967, and the effects of the Cold War and sixties counterculture are being felt in Oxford. It has barely been two weeks since the events depicted in the season three finale of Masterpiece Mystery’s Endeavour, and we find Oxford’s finest picking up the pieces of their personal and professional lives. Endeavour waits to hear the result of his Sergeant’s Exam, and self-medicates to numb his heartache over Joan, but whisky and Tännhauser will only get a man so far. Watch the season premiere at 8 pm Sunday, August 20.
On Monday August 21, America’s eyes will be glued to the skies as the mainland United States experiences the first total solar eclipse since 1979. NOVA will capture the spectacular event in a special presentation to air hours after it takes place. Eclipse Over America at 8 pm will be the ultimate companion to this celestial event. NOVA will follow teams working on the forefront of solar science and solar storm detection, use immersive CGI animation to reveal the sun’s secret mechanisms and integrate stunning sequences of the eclipse itself— including scenes filmed at iconic locations along the path of the eclipse—user-generated content, NASA footage, and more.

In 2017 it will be twenty years since Princess Diana was killed in a car crash, however Diana’s story remains incomplete. Diana at 7 pm Tuesday, August 22 is a new film full of fresh material, including new statements from Diana’s bodyguard Ken Wharfe and her private secretary Patrick Jephson. With the passage of time, other key characters are more able to speak freely. The Diana story has moved from an extraordinary episode in our immediate past to one beginning to resemble history. The emotional power of her story may have ebbed, but in 2017 while the importance of her story for us as a nation may have changed focus, it will be as significant as ever.
“They all felt

POV presents Raising Bertie at 9 pm Monday, August 28, an intimate portrait of three AfricanAmerican boys as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina. Like many rural areas, Bertie County struggles with a dwindling economy, a declining population, and a high school graduation rate below the state average. This powerful vérité film weaves the young men’s narratives together as they work to define their identities and grow into adulthood while navigating complex relationships, institutional racism, violence, poverty, and educational inequity.

IPM’s classical radio department
receives large
CD donation The family of Larkin Burl Price, a professor of literature at the University of Illinois, gave a substantial classical music CD donation to the University after settling the professor’s estate. Over 1200 CDs were processed through the French and Italian departments, who then contacted WILL’s FM staff. John Frayne and Vincent Trauth retrieved the multiple boxes of CDs and proceeded to sort, catalog, and add almost 1000 of the CDs and box sets to our FM classical library. All duplicates of CDs already in our collection have been added to the inventory for the next Vintage Vinyl sale. The new additions to the collection included both singles and box sets in both classical and opera. John Frayne, host of Afternoon at the Opera and Classics of the Phonograph on WILL-FM 90.9, said, “This gift substantially increases our opera library, and will enrich our choices for presentation on Afternoon at the Opera.” Vincent Trauth, host of The Evening Concert, added, “The library of instrumental music was enlarged by more than 500 new-to-us titles through this donation. We are so thankful to Professor Price and the Italian and French departments.”
