It feels good to give back. And together with our generous customers and employees, Macy’s averages more than $1 million a week to initiatives important to you and your community – arts, education, HIV/AIDS, and women’s health and wellness. It adds up to nearly $71 million a year. It’s a good feeling we can all share, and to us, that’s the magic of giving.

Created CCMpower Membership Legacy

If it hadn’t been for the investment that others made in our education, we wouldn’t be pictured here. Now, it’s our turn. We plan to support CCM for our lifetimes. Then, our planned gift will endow our current level of CCMpower support for future generations of talented students. So much was done for us. It’s the least we could, and should, do for others.

MARY LU AND DICK AFT Cincinnati became home to Dick and Mary Lu Aft in 1987 when Dick began his 14-year presidency of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati. That was also the year that Mary Lu began 28 years of Friends of the Public Library Leadership. As Dick continues to teach, consult and write books about United Way history, Mary Lu still spends three days each week volunteering as a Library Friend. She is also Vice Chair of the Fifty Year Club alumni association of their shared alma mater, Knox College. Dick serves as a member of the CCMpower Executive Committee and Chair of the Community Advisory Board of UC’s Hoxworth’s Blood Center. Mary Lu and Dick consider CCM “their conservatory” and believe it to be one of the best in the world. They should know, as they have enjoyed performances all over the world while working as a volunteer team committed to increasing non-profit services to people in need.

THE VILLAGE NEWS ALUMNI APPLAUSE Since graduation, Nikki Renée Daniels (BFA Musical Theatre, 2001) has performed in over a dozen productions in New York City, including her role as Nabalungi in the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon. Other recent performances include such roles as Aida in Aida at ArtPark (Lewiston, New York) and Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at the North Shore Music Theatre (Beverly, Mass.).

Christine Cornish Smith (BFA Musical Theatre, 2013) made her Broadway debut this summer as Bombalurina in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. The Broadway revival of the Tony Award-winning musical opened at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York on July 31. Previously she has appeared in A Chorus Line at the Riverside Theatre (Vero Beach, Fla.), Oklahoma! at the MUNY (St. Louis, Mo.) and Guys and Dolls at the Goodspeed Opera House (East Haddam, Conn.).

This fall the spotlight will shine on understudy Eric Sciotto (BFA Musical Theatre, 1997) as he steps into the role of William Shakespeare in Broadway’s Something Rotten! Sciotto has also performed on Broadway as an ensemble member in The Mystery of Edwin Drood; Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; Pal Joey; Cry-Baby; A Chorus Line; Sweet Smell of Success and 42nd Street.

Orchestral Studies alumna and former faculty member Xian Zhang (CCM, 1998-2009) makes her debut as the conductor and music director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 27, 2016. She is also serving as the principal guest conductor of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales this season — the first female conductor to hold a titled role with the orchestra.

DEDICATION OSCAR KOSARIN

This production is dedicated to Professor Emeritus Oscar Kosarin, who served on CCM’s Musical Theatre faculty from 1971 through 1985. Kosarin passed away on Oct. 1, 2016, at the age of 98. He is survived by his wife Dianne, daughter, Carli and sons Kim and Oscar. Kosarin began playing piano professionally at the age of 19, first performing with dance bands in nightclubs before making the move to Broadway, where he also gained experience as a conductor, arranger and vocal coach. On Broadway, he conducted musicals such as Happy Time with Robert Goulet, Oh, Captain with Tony Randall, Fade Out, Fade In with Carol Burnett and Mr. Wonderful with Sammy Davis, Jr. Kosarin was named to CCM’s faculty in the fall of 1971 as part of the expansion of the school’s still-nascent musical theatre degree program. Kosarin began his time at CCM by conducting productions of Bye, Bye Birdie, Brigadoon and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum during the 1971-72 season. He cited Sweeney Todd, West Side Story and Sugar as three of his favorite musicals from his 14-year tenure at CCM. Oscar Kosarin played an indelible role in CCM’s history. We present these performances of A Chorus Line in loving memory of him.
