CCM ON STAGE OPERA SYNOPSIS SET IN A SMALL TOWN IN TEXAS, 1948
ACT I: Late Morning: The Spring Festival
While the town celebrates the arrival of spring, Ma enka tells her boyfriend, Jeník, that her parents are planning an arranged marriage for her. Regardless, the two pledge their love and loyalty to each other. Ma enka’s parents, Ludmila and Krušina, entertain the marriage broker Kecal, who announces that he has found a groom for their daughter. If she marries Vašek, the son of wealthy landowner Tobias Micha, the substantial debt that Krušina owes Micha will be forgiven. When Ma enka arrives, she responds that she has already chosen a lover and will not budge.
ACT II: Afternoon: The Beer Garden
Vašek is too shy to join the festivities. Ma enka, realizing who he is, pretends to be someone else. She flirts with Vašek, tells him that “Maenka” already has a lover and will not be a faithful wife, and extracts a promise from Vašek to seek another bride. Meanwhile, Kecal offers Jeník 300 dollars if he will give up Ma enka. He accepts, but on one condition: that no one but “Micha’s son” will be allowed to marry her.
ACT III: Late Afternoon and Evening: The Festival Grounds
Vašek, alone with his thoughts, is interrupted by the arrival of a traveling circus. The Ringmaster introduces the star performer, Esmeralda the animal tamer, and the troupe presents a teaser performance. Vašek is intrigued. The circus discovers that the man playing the dancing bear is too drunk to perform, so Esmeralda and the Ringmaster convince Vašek to take his place. Just then, Vašek is found by his parents, Micha and Háta, and he informs them he no longer wants to marry Ma enka. Ma enka and her parents arrive. She has learned of Jeník’s betrayal and refuses to believe it. Vašek then recognizes the real Ma enka as the “stranger” who flirted with him and agrees to proceed with the wedding. Jeník returns, and to the surprise of all, addresses Micha as “Father.” He is Micha’s elder son from a previous marriage, driven away from home by his stepmother Háta. The deal he made with Kecal therefore permits him, as “Micha’s son,” to marry Ma enka, who happily accepts.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE By Audrey Chait To quote Karel Sabina, the librettist: “If I had suspected what Smetana would make of my operetta, I should have taken more pains and written him a better and more solid libretto.” And yet, this story lends itself wonderfully to being shaped from a modern point of view. This production explores what it means to be a young American immigrant, preserving the traditions of the old country while embracing a new way of life. In this case, we find ourselves in a Czech community in Texas, 1948 — such towns were and are a rich subset of American history, and were so insular that “Texas Czech” developed as its own dialect. You’ll notice that some text is left in the original Czech, in the spirit of realism: The folk songs are sung as-is, as are moments when characters do not want to filter their most urgent thoughts through a second language. Jeník and Ma enka, our young lovers, are proud of their heritage but certainly also enjoy
the liberties of American youth culture. One hundred years prior, a young woman would have seen her own arranged marriage as inevitable, but our “bartered bride” Ma enka does not accept this framework, which makes her situation all the more delicate to navigate within her community. On the other hand, Vašek, haplessly pressured to marry Ma enka by his own parents, was originally composed as a boy who stutters and this speech impediment has usually been played for laughs. Instead, our adaptation by Kathleen Kelly paints Vašek as a shy young man who has been stifled by what is expected of him. When the circus comes to town, Vašek is exposed to an entirely different way of life, with its own value system and means of forming community. Though the romantic comedy belongs to Jeník and Ma enka, Vašek is given the beginnings of a coming-of-age-story. Perhaps Mr. Sabina should have written a sequel.

This collaboration started in the summer between myself and Audrey Chait, and continued during the rehearsal process with the singers. The result is a beautiful community effort, which is very much in the spirit of the production and of the piece itself.

CCM ON STAGE ORCHESTRA ABOUT THE CCM PHILHARMONIA
“the flair and technique of a professional ensemble” — Rafael’s Music Notes
The CCM Philharmonia, under the direction of Professor and CCM Director of Orchestra Studies Mark Gibson, is recognized as one of the world’s elite conservatory orchestras. The breadth of each season’s concert series rivals many of the world’s great performing organizations, and the Philharmonia presents a body of repertoire that encompasses more than what most conservatories venture to program. The close bond between the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and CCM’s orchestral program invigorates student conductors and instrumentalists alike, and CCM’s commitment to high standards enriches the cultural life of Greater Cincinnati.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT For many years, Jeff Thomas and Kent Shaw have been generous donors, tireless supporters and enthusiastic participants at CCM. Both have served on the board of CCMpower, a volunteer group of fans, advocates, supporters and alumni dedicated “to empowering students and igniting possibilities.” “Students who we have helped come and perform in CCMpower board meetings,” Shaw says. “We get to see what’s been done to help these kids get to the point they’re at. It’s the most gratifying thing you could ever imagine because we hear their stories, we see what we’ve been able to do — what members of CCMpower have been able to do — to impact students’ lives.” Thomas first encountered CCM when, as a student at the University of Cincinnati majoring in business, he took music appreciation as an elective. Photo by Andrew Higley
CCM Musical Theatre’s Class of 2017 rehearses for the Not Famous Yet Senior Showcase in Patricia Corbett Theater.
“One of the cool things about it was that you had to go to one of the CCM performances,” Thomas says. “So I chose to go to a musical. At the time the director of musical theatre was Worth Gardner, who was a genius — off-the-wall crazy man genius. I went to see Canterbury Tales in 1975 and it just struck me, ‘wow, this is one hell of a school.’” Seeing one performance is often all it takes to turn someone into a friend of CCM. Thomas has generously contributed his skills and wonderful food for years at CCM’s gala fundraising event Moveable Feast. In recognition of his support, he was honored by CCM last year. His dinner-by-the-bite cuisine will return for this year’s Moveable Feast, which will be held
throughout CCM Village on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020. Shaw, an interior designer, has played a part in every Moveable Feast since 2009, when he was first asked to be on the planning committee. In 2011 he joined CCMpower, which was called Friends of CCM at the time. Shaw was also on the special events committee that worked on CCM’s 2018 Saints and Sinners Bash and the Not Famous Yet Senior Showcase. Both men think the Not Famous Yet Senior Showcase is extraordinary. The annual event, which began more than 50 years ago, showcases the talents of CCM’s graduating class of musical theatre students. The Broadway hopefuls perform the showcase in Cincinnati before they take the show to New York City for one of the pivotal moments of their nascent careers: an audition in front of casting directors and producers who can change their lives. The seniors are often cast in Broadway shows and in national tours following their New York showcase performances. Thomas and Shaw have gone to New York many times to see these students reach for their dreams. “We watch it here at CCM and then we go to New York and you’re sitting between all these casting directors,” Thomas says. “You see these kids take it to a whole other level. By the end of the day they have heard from all of these casting directors. They get multiple callbacks. They’re that good. That’s why CCM has the reputation it does.” This single event and these two men say so much about what is at the heart of CCM: the quality of the college’s gifted students, whose talent is refined and deepened here, and the formidable dedication of CCM supporters who make it all possible. Learn more about the Musical Theatre Class of 2020 Senior Showcase and Moveable Feast on page 21.

CCM ON STAGE WINDS ABOUT THE CCM WIND SYMPHONY
“a vibrant performance” — Janelle’s Notes
The CCM Wind Symphony has received wide acclaim for the quality of its performances as well as the diversity and originality of its programming. Dedicated to bringing the finest traditional and contemporary literature to its audiences, the ensemble performs chamber music, selected transcriptions, concerti and original full ensemble repertoire spanning five centuries.
PROGRAM NOTE By Kevin Michael Holzman The Stonewall Uprising (often referred to as the Stonewall Riots) began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, an LGBTQ+ bar (and today a National Historic Landmark) in New York City. This raid, in which police forcefully hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, sparked a riot and led to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement that served as a significant catalyst for the modern gay rights movement in the U.S. Tonight’s concert is in memory of the 50th anniversary of this historic event, one of the most significant in the LGBTQ+ movement. The LGBTQ+ rights movement in the U.S. has been long and arduous. The Stonewall Uprising is merely one significant milestone among many in the long fight for rights and equality. Significant progress has been made since the time of the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS epidemic, most notably the Obergefell v. Hodges case in which the Supreme Court ruled that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples. Despite this landmark decision and other victories, hate and prejudice towards the LGBTQ+ community remain prevalent in many parts of the U.S. and world.
I strongly believe in the power of music to challenge prejudice and hate. The inspiration for tonight’s concert, which consists exclusively of works composed by LGBTQ+ composers, is to both recognize the importance of the LGBTQ+ rights movement (especially to the arts) and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of the most pivotal moments in this movement’s history. Aaron Copland’s landmark Fanfare for the Common Man, which was written in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is among the most iconic works of Americana of the 20th century. Jennifer Higdon’s Mysterium is an instrumental arrangement from her choral setting of O Magnum Mysterium. David Clay Mettens, a native of Greater Cincinnati, composed his new work Un-Masqued to be premiered this evening. Omar Thomas’s A Mother of a Revolution! is dedicated to Martha P. Johnson, a pioneering leader of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and Stonewall Uprising. The program closes with John Corigliano’s Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan. The postlude Forever Young is dedicated to those whose lives were lost, but whose memory will live on forever. With deepest gratitude to the CCM Harmony Fund: Challenging Hate and Prejudice through Performing Arts for its generous sponsorship of this concert.

PROGRAM CHAIR NOTES By Shauna Steele “The magic of a ballet performance isn’t just the remarkable athleticism displayed... It’s the grace combining natural ability and uncountable hours of practice. We’re awed by such extreme grace, but if our eyes are open, we can see beyond the dance floor. Grace isn’t just about how we move. It’s about who we are. Handling life with grace means taking a

measured approach, not immediately reacting in an emotional way. It’s about responding in a balanced manner — even in an awkward situation” (Lou Harry) and that is the bonus, outcome and value of conservatory training. As a department we are proud of the past and current accomplishments our students and faculty have achieved, and we look forward to what they will do in the changing landscape
CCM ON STAGE DANCE of dance in the U.S. and abroad. We look to the future of conservatory training within an academic institution to move our department and students forward, keeping us at the intellectual and physical forefront of quality dance training and performance. This year we begin masterclass sessions on “Dance as a Profession” and audition “Bootcamp” in addition to ongoing technique master classes. We continue to support our 16 upperclass students who are out on co-operative professional experiences with companies around the U.S. and abroad, while continuing to earn their CCM degree in dance. The spring dance concert on April 23-26, 2020, will feature guest artist Joysanne Sidimus’
staging of George Balanchine’s masterwork Serenade and a work by guest artist Matthew Farmer to Bach’s Cello Suites. In addition, the concert will present a celebration of Igor Stravinsky, in partnership with Mark Gibson and the CCM Philharmonia. A favorite among choreographers for his musical sensibility and sense of modernism, Stravinsky continues to engage and inspire dancers, choreographers, musicians and conductors alike. The spring concert features Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Suite No. 2 with new, original choreography by CCM dance faculty. I am excited to be on this journey with you — to share the grace and see where dance at CCM will blossom next! Welcome to CCM Dance!

CCM ON STAGE DANCE For over three decades, David Ralphs provided inspiring music for dance students of CCM. His music for ballet classes helped support the choreography, instill artistry and propel the movements being performed. His self-effacing, quiet manner could be mistaken for a lack of passion, but his contribution to each class was enormous and recognized by the teachers for whom he accompanied. Faculty Spotlight: EARL RIVERS, DIRECTOR OF CHORAL STUDIES AND PROFESSOR OF MUSIC By Joseph Rubino Earl Rivers first came to CCM as a student to begin DMA studies in September 1970 and became a full-time faculty member at the college three years later. He has spent decades working with generations of gifted students across the world who have been inspired by his curiosity and passion.

the style and the elements of delivery were masterful. This spring I’m producing and conducting the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610, which is the biggest, baddest piece in the Early Baroque. That’s why I stay, for the opportunity to do these master works at such a tremendous level. “I especially love coaching the students, opening up their minds to listening more carefully, considering alternatives to phrasing and shaping the phrase,” Rivers adds. “For me, time stands still. A student walks in the room at 10 o’clock and suddenly it’s 11.” Photo by Joseph Rubino
Earl Rivers is renowned throughout the choral arts world. As Artistic Director for the World Choir Games in 2012, he helped bring the largest international choral festival in the world to Cincinnati — the first American city to ever host the event. His graduate choral conducting program was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the country’s leading programs of its kind. Despite many accomplishments of his own — such as receiving Choral America’s Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Choral Art and Chorus America’s Director Laureate Award — Rivers would rather shine the spotlight on his students. “Not only are our conducting students wonderful, the singers and instrumentalists here are worldclass,” Rivers says. “There are other music schools that have good singers, but not as many at the level we have at CCM. The first-year master’s degree students currently singing in Chamber Choir are scary good.” Rivers’ passion for his students and his pedagogy remains strong because he finds a new reason to be inspired every day. “I attended a CCM opera workshop to experience Cavalli’s La Calisto last April, and thought ‘10 years ago, I’m not sure the students could have done that — stylistically,’ ” Rivers says. “Their understanding of
Rivers has been at CCM for 49 years, nearly half the amount of time that the college’s choral program has existed. CCM commemorates the 100th anniversary of the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses with the “Centennial Celebration” concert on April 5, 2020. As Choral Studies marks this milestone, Rivers looks toward the future. Rivers has already conducted CCM’s choral and orchestral ensembles in acclaimed regional premieres of John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls and El Niño, as well as American university premieres of staged productions of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion, to name a few. But he says additional scholarship and funding support is necessary to ensure the college can keep up with the needs of 21st-century students and continue to present high-quality performances. “We need scholarship funds to stay competitive with other schools because the students we are bringing in are amongst the top in the country,” Rivers says. “We also need support to do ensemble productions that encompass staging, visuals, multi-media and dance, beyond standard ensemble production values.” “These added production values enhance the students’ experiences, to do the types of productions that they’re going to face in the professional world,” he adds. “By doing this, the students — singers, instrumentalists and conductors — will be better prepared for the realities of the careers they’re going to have.” APPLAUSE ccm.uc.edu
