2008-2009 CCM Mainstage Season

OCTOBER 30NOVEMBER 2, 2008 Patricia Corbett Theater On the tumultuous border between childhood and adulthood, friends struggle to comprehend the essence of love and yearning. A provocative expression of the adolescent experience, Spring Awakening explores the elation and turmoil among teenagers on the verge of sexual self-awareness against a society’s rigid standards of morality. Written in 1891, this forward-thinking play inspired the musical version that is currently running on Broadway to great critical and public acclaim. For mature audiences. Written by Frank Wedekind • Adapted by Jonathan Franzen Richard E. Hess, director

NOVEMBER 20-23, 2008 Corbett Auditorium One ambitious man’s uproarious ride to the top. A lighthearted satire of the business world, this Pulitzer Prizeand Tony Award-winning musical chronicles window washer J. Pierrepont Finch’s rise up the corporate ladder. With the help of an instructional guide and a burgeoning bond with a sharp-as-a-tack secretary, Finch hatches a plan to make it big without breaking a sweat. Music and lyrics by Frank Loesser • Book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert • Aubrey Berg, director David Gardos, musical director • Diana Lala, choreographer

FEBRUARY 12-15, 2009 Patricia Corbett Theater A lovestruck count enlists a quick-witted barber to win a señorita’s heart. With its sparkling melodies, amusing antics and against-theodds love story, The Barber of Seville has secured its place as one of the most popular operas of all time. Count Almaviva, the determined suitor, along with his scissorswielding sidekick Figaro, is dragged into one mishap after another as he attempts to wrest the captivating Rosina from an overbearing guardian. Sung in Italian with projected English translations. Composed by Gioachino Rossini • Libretto by Cesare Sterbini Annunziata Tomaro, conductor • Karen Coe Miller, director

FEBRUARY 26-MARCH 1, MARCH 5-8, 2009 Patricia Corbett Theater Part poetry, part pop opera, Shakespeare’s exuberant comedy receives the musical treatment as a free love-era romp. Based on the Bard’s whimsical comedy, the Tony Awardwinning 1971 rock musical Two Gentlemen of Verona is a frothy celebration of young love from the composer of Hair. Two best friends leave their small town behind to indulge in the big city’s hedonistic thrills. When a lovely young heiress catches both of their attentions, the boys engage in an outlandishly funny battle of one-upmanship. Music by Galt MacDermot • Lyrics by John Guare Book by John Guare and Mel Shapiro Andrew Palermo, guest director/choreographer Roger Grodsky, musical director

APRIL 23-26, 2009 Patricia Corbett Theater A wry and witty look at the frayed edges of sisterly bonds. A bourbon-tinged dark comedy, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Crimes of the Heart chronicles a day in the life of three Southern sisters who have reunited at their grandfather’s Mississippi home. Lenny, facing her 30th birthday, feels doomed to a life alone; Meg boasts a string of ex-boyfriends and a failed singing career; and Babe has married an abuser— and just shot him. As they come to terms with the pain of their past, the sisters rediscover the imperfect love that holds them together. Written by Beth Henley • R. Terrell Finney, Jr., director

MAY 14-17, 2009 Corbett Auditorium A conniving carouser gets his hilarious comeuppance. Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Verdi’s lush and lively final opera is among his most brilliant. Sir John Falstaff is an overstuffed, aging oaf looking to seduce two noblemen’s wives and bilk them of their fortunes. The women take revenge by employing altered identities, amusing distractions and much more mischief in an attempt to beat the fumbling Falstaff at his own game. Sung in Italian with projected English translations. Composed by Giuseppe Verdi • Libretto by Arrigo Boito Mark Gibson, conductor • Robin Guarino, director
