NOTES

DIRECTOR’S NOTE I first came to this show 20 years ago as a young actor in Detroit. We performed it at the now defunct Equity theatre, the Attic, and did a command performance at the Wayne County Maximum Security Men’s Prison there. Needless to say, it was an educational experience all around. American prisons are some of the most crowded in the world. As the economic gulf grows wider in our nation, we forget somehow that poverty itself creates its own inescapable culture. Punishment seems to be our go-to answer (according to the cold, hard statistics). The history that surrounds this play is that of a nation on the brink of defining itself. The disenfranchised are tossed out of a country, to be punished or to be allowed to begin again. And there lies the question: do we punish or redeem those who act outside society’s laws? And what place — if any — do the arts play in our redemption, in defining who we are? Does theatre help us meet our better selves, or is it a frivolous pastime? In our present time, we are faced with these same questions. I toured the high schools of Montana and the Midwest for years and saw again and again the ratty theatres, the struggling arts programs. I saw students who were not athletes left with no outlet to explore who they are. Across the country budget cuts see the arts go first. In those places where our future generations begin to define who they are and what they value — art, theatre, music — these disciplines have been judged frivolous. The Attic, at one time the only Equity theatre in a then-troubled city, has closed its doors. I can’t help ask: at what expense? As our efforts seem turned towards punishing or banishing, resulting in a war on the impoverished rather than a war on poverty, I can’t help but ask: what is the expense of spirit for them; for us? I don’t have the answers. I can only echo the words of our playwright and hope that “The last word will be the play, gentlemen.” — Susan Felder, director

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS D’Arcy Smith and Kate Webster, for their extra hours and expertise.
