Creation. Baptism. Rebir th. Water infuses the cycle of life— and inspires Tan Dun’s Water Passion After St. Matthew. Best known for his score to the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which earned him a Grammy and an Oscar, Tan Dun composed Water Passion After St. Matthew to commemorate in 2000 the 250th anniversary of the death of J.S. Bach. Tan Dun’s score builds a cultural bridge from East to West, creating a variety of eclectic musical styles, from chanting Tibetan monks, overtone singing, electronic synthesizers, to allusions to Bach’s own work. Voices interweave with a unique instrumental ensemble, including 17 Plexiglas bowls laid out in the form of a cross that are “played” with a variety of Chinese instruments. Tan Dan wanted to write a passion for contemporary times, to create a synthesis of world music: “This version of the gospel story is a reflection of today’s culture, and most important in our culture today is something that must be shareable.”
