Ladies and Gents, Start Your Tractors! If you visit Roy White’s home overlooking the Belubula River you’ll be amazed at what he’s got hidden there – no less than 30 vintage tractors in various stages of restoration. Amongst this are other relics, including an entire guard’s railway carriage beautifully renovated inside to provide accommodation with all mod cons for visitors. Roy’s been rebuilding old tractors since 1995 when he went to a show and saw a vintage Bulldog taking part in a tractor pull. “I wanted one badly,” he says, “and I managed to grab a derelict one for $75 and start restoring it. Antique Bulldogs are now selling for $10,000 to $20,000! My latest is an Allis Chalmers with a V-8 engine; it took me seven years to persuade the owner in Dubbo to sell it to me.” It would take an entire book to describe
Roy White and his tractors, but for now it’s enough to say that he and his Chamberlain C670 will be in the vanguard of this year’s Camp Quality Tractor Trek. Tractor Trek is a parade hosted in the Central West that will pass through numerous towns including our very own Canowindra. The aim this year is to raise $180,000 to support children and families living with cancer in the Central West. The Trek will trundle into Canowindra on Friday September 19th for its annual fundraising campaign. The event culminates that evening with a $35 a head fundraising dinner at the Services Club. In the picture above Roy is stylishly sporting one of Tractor Trek’s hats detailing the route that can you can buy on the day for $15. By Derek Maitland

Travel Update: Part II We caught the metro into the city of Rome, Italy where we saw architecture that the Romans built thousands of years ago. The majority of old monuments were covered in scaffolding which was a shame. What we lost in aesthetics we made up for in weather, our first real hot day that reminded me of the summers back home. We then visited Venice, home of gondolas and bridges where I witnessed the streets flooding first hand! Italy was amazing and so was their risottos,

Medieval Musical Treat For Canowindra Kids Canowindra’s queen of folk, Nerida Cuddy, has a wonderful musical treat in store for the town’s schoolchildren – a special concert by the traditional song duo, Kim Cunion and Heather Lee. The concert will feature medieval and Celtic works and the instruments of their time. “Medieval Music and Beyond,” takes place this coming Monday, August 25th, in the Canowindra Public School Hall, with performances at 10am for pre-school children and 11.30am for primary and high
school pupils. Performing as “Oscar and Marigold,” the two singer-musicians will show “how medieval, Celtic and folk music come together…even with a little contemporary Australian folk!” Contemporary instruments will be played including the hurdy gurdy, psaltery, saz and oud. Heather Lee is rated as having one of the “purist” voices in Australia and she’s sung at the White House, United Nations and Sydney 2000 Olympics, performing sacred
and traditional music and western classics “with an ability to sing in many languages and styles.” Kim Cunion is a composer, music historian and instrumentalist as well as being able to sing “in a deep velvety bass”. This year he is launching his first opera at the Sydney Opera House. Nerida says the duo’s visit has been made possible, “with the help of a CASP (Country Arts Support Program) grant through Artsoutwest.” We hope the children have fun going on a musical journey back to Medieval days, no mead allowed though! IMAGE: Holden SS Commodore
SS Club rolls through Canowindra On Sunday 10th August at around 10am, 38 SS Holden’s from around NSW rumbled into Charlie’s Holden Museum to see his collection. Cars were parked all along Gaskill Street from Ryall to Tilga. The SS Club was founded in Victoria in 2012 by Chris Sanderson. It has “chapters” in all the Aussie states and boasts just over 3100 members, making it one of the fastest growing car clubs in Australia. The club prides itself on being fun and family orientated, a place where like-minded SS owners from all over can come together and shares stories and experiences of their cars. It has a strict no hooning policy (that’s street racing to us non-members) with no video footage or pictures related to hoon-type
behaviour allowed. Only professionally help events are accepted such as burnout competitions and drags. The club is dedicated to its’ members, holding social events, cruises and BBQ’s to bring everyone together. After having a browse at Charlie’s the SS Holden owners headed to Morris Park for a sausage BBQ kindly donated by some of the members. The Club managed to raise $100 for the day, made up of donations and sausage sandwiches sold. All monies raised in the club by way of raffles and donations go to Challenge For Kids. If you’d like to join this kooky club, check out the SS Owners on Facebook. By Loz Caprice

Prime Minister Pumps Some Pedals Lithgow rolled out the welcome mat on Saturday for Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the riders of the 2014 Pollie Pedal. The riders were delayed by some difficult riding over the unyielding 150 kilometres from Mudgee to
Lithgow. Despite this, many politicians took part in the ride which was all about raising funds and awareness for the 3 million unpaid carers in Australia. John Cobb, MP for Calare, would like to thank the people of
02 6362 3287
Lithgow for welcoming the riders with enthusiasm. Other attendees of the day included the Lithgow City Council and Mayor of Lithgow, Maree Statham. After hearing a tune the Lithgow City Band were playing, Tony Abbott stated, “I couldn’t help but notice that the tune you were playing when we arrived was called Count Your Blessings. Well, I tell you I am counting my blessings having arrived here in Lithgow because it was a very long 150 kilometres I have to say… when every single kilometre has to be pedal-powered they were big, big hills indeed but it is a great thing that we are doing.” The 2014 event has been a huge success and we look forward to the next one. Using Soft Furnishings to Layer a Room Fabric choices are instrumental in creating a desired theme in any interior, be it classic, country style, masculine, modern or unique. There is such a vast array of fabrics and textiles on the market today – from simple calico to rich velvets and elaborate, delicately coloured prints. There is a fabric for every budget, every desired effect and every interior application. Fabrics lend essential colour, richness, texture and comfort to an interior. Soft furnishings can be used in many forms throughout a space. Fabrics should be selected with the utmost care. The fall of the fabric, shrinkage, maintenance, stain-proof, fade free, colourfast, fire retardant, mothproof, non-static, upholstery and drapery are all factors that need to be considered. There are a few simple rules when it comes to using soft furnishings throughout a room. Patterns can be mixed, as long as colours harmonise and there is an affinity between the patterns. Fabric patterns should complement fixtures such as architectural details and floor finishes. The scale of the pattern should be consistent with the size of the space. A busy pattern may look better as cushions rather than a large floor rug. The overall colour scheme and theme of the interior also needs to be considered. Once you have taken everything in to consideration, the challenge of coordinating different fabric choices to create the look
you’re after begins. This is where the skills of an experienced interior designer may come in to play. Once you have settled on a style, the process of designing and sourcing fabrics can begin. Firstly, the major decisions such as drapery and upholstery need to be made. Then finish with accessories, such as cushions and throws. Another option in the decision making of soft furnishings is to choose a floor rug first. It becomes an integral part of the room’s décor, pulling all the elements together and anchoring them down. Choose a floor rug that you love, it’s going to be around for a long time! If you can start with the rug and build a room around this anchor, you will realise how many options of fabrics in all colours and styles, wall treatments and finishes are available to coordinate with it. Overall, adding more texture and layers to a room increases that room’s warmth. I have found that the latest trend is all kinds of fresh and pastel. Grey, lemon, mint and melon mix with natural textures, spliced fabrics, metallics and wood elements. Over-scaled weaves, woven chunky stripes, houndstooth and shag textures are found across cushions and throws. Oversized pod cushions in grey while mint is the new hue for bed linen, against monochrome grid patterns and herringbone prints or layered with soft pastels in oversized graphics. Throws are spliced with a mix of fabrics, geo prints and micro textures. Contact us for all your soft furnishing advice and needs. By Kim Lowe Interiors

Next Wednesday, August 20th, is the official launch of the #whoRUprotecting selfie campaign. This campaign is part of the national annual White Balloon Day on September 12th that raises funds to protect Aussie kids from sexual assault. The campaign, created by the charity Bravehearts, asks Canowindra residents this question, who are you protecting? It might be your son, daughter, niece or nephew, or perhaps even all children in the town. Now in its 18th year, White Balloon Day aims to raise funds so they can deliver vital education, counselling and training to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston is urging all Australians to take a selfie to show support, “child sexual assault is preventable… let’s do this as a nation.” A host of television and sporting talent have already jumped on board including James Courtney and Matt Doran. The con-
cept is simple; you write whoever you protect on your hand, pose for a selfie then send to a social networking site with the hashtag #whoRUprotecting. By doing this you’re helping raise awareness of White Balloon Day, when a range of fund-raising events will be held across the country. If you would like to know more about hosting an event on this day head to www.whiteballoonday.com.au, or if you need to talk to someone about abuse call Bravehearts on 1800272831. 1 in 5 kids will be sexually assaulted in some way before their 18th birthday. Please help Bravehearts stop child sexual assault in your community and strike a pose. By Rhi Quinn

Local Man and His Wife’s Brave Struggle - How You Can Help In July Lyndsey Clark was taken ill after a Carnival Cruise. Doctors diagnosed her first with a virus, then pneumonia, sending her home several times. Lyndsey is wife to Ben Clark who grew up in Canowindra and went to school here, his mother is Kerrie Clark. Last week, Lyndsey was back in hospital, baffling doctors. Finally after a full work up, the worst news was revealed. Lyndsey has stage two (secondary) liver cancer, meaning the cancer
originated somewhere else in the body and spread. To maintain the family’s privacy we won’t disclose how much time Lyndsey has left but sadly it will not be the lifetime she had envisioned with her beautiful five year old daughter and husband. Lyndsey has started chemotherapy to give her more precious moments with those she loves; she is an extremely brave woman, staying strong for those around her. Linda Brown, a family
member, wanted to do something to ease the burden this young family are feeling. Initially the goal was to raise funds to help Lyndsey pay for the car registration this month, but Linda believes they can do more, setting up an online fundraising page for Lyndsey. “If you can help, we won’t be able to thank you enough. If you can’t, that’s ok too. Maybe tonight, just hug a little longer and make sure your children, husband, wife, parents know you love them” says Linda. Rick Slattery, Ben’s lifelong friend, is currently organising a trivia night and silent auction at the Services Club for the 13th Sept to help raise money. On Sunday the 17th of August at Tom Clyburn Oval, the Canowindra Tigresses had an audience of cheering spectators. A chance field goal won The Tigresses game in the second half of overtime against Eugowra, beating them 7 - 6. It was a nail biting game as Canowindra fought for this win with everything they had right from the first whistle. At this stage in the competition there is no room for error which is exactly what the Canowindra ladies displayed, they were straight up to the Eugowra Geagles leaving them no room to run. Canowindra’s fantastic win was kick started once again by Jess Coker who was able to score the only try for Canowindra in the first 10 minutes of the game. The ladies then held their composure as they wanted to remain one try in front although unfortunately the Geagles were able to equal the score board right on half time bringing the score to 6 all. With wise words from Coach and trainers at half time the Tigresses stood their ground and defended incredibly as the score continued to remain the same for the whole
of the second half. The game then went into overtime with 5 extra minutes each side of the field until a point was scored. At nearly 10 minutes into extra time spectators and supporters were on their feet as Canowindra had the ball and were running towards Eugowra’s territory when suddenly all eyes were on Kristy White as she kicked a field goal that bounced off the posts and landed itself straight through the middle while the Canowindra Tigresses screamed for joy at their victory. Players Player was awarded to Kristy White for saving the day with that brilliant kick. Kristy also displayed some fantastic defence as she helped her team chase down those Geagles. Absolutely phenomenal game for all of the Canowindra Tigresses as they now take in this win and use their new found confidence to hopefully have a winning result against Condobolin next weekend. Good luck Tigresses!
First Grade
Another very intense game was held between Canowindra and Cargo on Sunday
and unfortunately the Heelers were in better favour as Canowindra was defeated 24 – 18. Only one try marked the difference between final points, showing how tight this game was. With some ruling decisions setting the Tigers back, they had to fight even harder throughout the game. Their defence skills were on show in the second half as for the first 10 minutes there were only 11 players on the field, and Cargo were still unable to break through Canowindra’s smaller defence line. Great work to Matt Mclean who was able to score the first try of the day. Matt kicked a perfect 40/20 and he also topped tackles with a high 32. Notable mention to Kain and Aaron Earsman for their great ball control as they made some damaging breaks through Cargo, along with their full back Nick Willson. This week’s Players Player went to one of the younger players Curtis Hughes for his outstanding performance on the day. Curtis was straight up to the Cargo players sending them backwards every time they attempted to reach the try line. His defence and attacking skills were flawless. Great work to Jayden Brown and Darren Nurcombe for also scoring a try each. An unfortunate loss as the Tigers couldn’t conform to put any more points on the board after a disallowed try got them down, they struggled to lift themselves back up to roar through the Heelers. The Tigers are now preparing through training this week to hope for a win against Peak Hill as the stakes for Grand Final are high. The next couple of weeks will determine who will be entering the Grand Final and Canowindra will be fighting for prime position. Best of luck Canowindra Tigers First Grade.
