IMAGE: The Boys bow their heads in silence for Chris
Python Boys Remember Chris Last Saturday the Rugby Union Club bowed their heads in silence to remember their teammate and friend, Chris Noble. The Pythons stood united at their presentation night as a team jersey with the number 13 was dedicated to Chris. The Dirty Reds, a Drummoyne team Chris played for during the five years he lived and worked in Sydney, also held a minute’s silence and wore black arm bands at their semi-final on Saturday. Rugby Union Club stalwart, Robb Morris, reflected on the community’s shock and sadness, “In a big city like Sydney, Chris’s tragic death is a shock for all who knew him there. In close-knit Canowindra it has touched virtually everyone who lives here.”
After the awards were handed out and the presentation evening wound down, the Pythons and friends headed up to the Rugby Club, but not before a visit to the pitch. In a circle, on bended knees, they raised their cans to Chris, pouring them onto the grass in a symbolic gesture for their mate to share with them. Canowindra will officially farewell Chris at a memorial service this coming Saturday, September 13th. The service is to be held at 11am at the Sports Oval. Friends, football colleagues and residents will join the Noble family in their grief, pride and love of Chris. Attendees are advised to bring their own chairs. By Rhi Quinn

Car-tastrophe Tommy Jeffs was given a shock this week as his car exploded whilst driving down Gaskill Street. “As I was driving everyone was waving and I just waved back thinking, this town is so friendly! Then a man pulled up and shouted at me to jump out, a few seconds after that the whole thing went up.” Tommy has been left with a black eye from the incident but other than that is unscathed. The car was practically brand new and as of this moment it’s a mystery why it decided to give up the ghost in such a spectacular fashion.

Lions Call On Canowindra To Help It’s High School! Canowindra Lions club has set up a community fund to raise money for the High School after the malicious vandalism last week did an estimated $100,000 worth of damage to infrastructure and inventory. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover all areas of the damage inflicted by the vandals so the Lions would like to help raise money to alleviate the pressure on the School and the P&C. For the next two weeks Lions members will be collecting donations from the community to go towards the recovery effort at the High School. The Age of Fishes Museum and Visitor Information Centre have agreed to be the collection point for these donations. Please feel free to drop into the museum with your contribution or alternatively call the manager Warren Keedle on 63441008 to arrange alternative methods such as direct deposit or credit card contributions. You can also send a cheque directly to the Lions Club at the following address; Canowindra Lions Club c/o Dr Kumar 106 Gaskill St Canowindra 2804 Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Legacy In Our Community - Legacy was established after WW1 as a charity to assist and look after the widows and families of deceased and incapacitated veterans. IMAGE: Archibull prize at high school
High School Cleans Up In Wake Of Mindless Vandalism Wanton… Mindless… Hateful. Those words pretty well sum up how we at the Phoenix feel, and surely most townspeople too, about the destruction waged by vandals at Canowindra High School last week. It was wanton and mindless because virtually nothing survived the swathe these criminals cut through the school, smashing and
trashing 14 windows and 15 doors, carpets, blinds, floors and walls, and, as school principal Neryle Smurthwaite reports on the web newsletter, “two photocopiers, video conferencing unit, 20 monitor/laptops/ hard drives, television and electrical appliances, music equipment and power tools.” The canteen and kitchen equipment was
smashed up with baseball bats and food thrown everywhere, and even the school’s farm store was attacked – seven of the hens were stolen and 90 incubated eggs destroyed. Somehow, the vandals left a major school project untouched – the Archibull Prize models that were being prepared for shipping to Sydney… It was a hateful rampage because there’s just no other motive that could possibly explain it – a hatred for the community, its young people and our key pillar of culture and progress: education. Neryle Smurthwaite assures parents and townspeople that “despite the scope of the vandalism and the damage caused, our students’ education has not been compromised and all classes are operating as normal.” However some year 12 HSC major works were damaged. Damage to the admin building, library, canteen, woodwork and metalwork rooms, farm store, music room and halls “will be met by insurance,” Neryle says. “Unfortunately the canteen stock and equipment is not covered, but we will work with the P&C to ensure this invaluable facility continues to provide for our students.” Astonishingly, it could have been much worse. The vandals were disturbed in their rampage by the arrival of a cleaner at 2am and fled before they reached the arts and science blocks. By Derek Maitland

spring into action Spring is the most beautiful time of year in Australia. The air hums with bees as they busily make their honey, lambs frolic in the paddocks and bright yellow canola sways in the breeze like fields of golden thread. Sounds more like a Mills & Boon novel than Canowindra doesn’t it? Spring is also a time of renewal and regrowth. For fans of gardening, this is a good time of year to start your seedlings. Take some time to celebrate the new life that surrounds you by going for a walk, heading down to the river to fish or even just sitting on the verandah and sipping a beer. After you’ve soaked up all the scenery, it’s time to sort out the house. Spring cleaning involves dusting, mopping and hovering every nook and cranny to blow out the cobwebs of the year. It’s thought that the origins of spring cleaning date back to the Persian New Year, which falls on the first day of spring. Modern Iranians continue the practice of “khooneh tekouni”, which literally means “shaking the house”, just before this new year. Another theory is that the act can be traced back to the Jewish practise of cleansing a home in anticipation of the spring-time feast of Passover. Whatever your beliefs, cleaning your living space creates a healthy atmosphere and a clear mind. If you want to go one step further in your cleansing antics, why not hold a garage sale? Many of us have room packed with things we rarely use and wouldn’t miss and as the saying goes; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! If you would like promote a garage sale or something similar, contact the Phoenix office. So you’ve appreciated the rural beauty of our area, you’ve scoured the house, now it’s time to cleanse yourself. Everyone makes the new year’s resolution to cut out chocolate during the week or to finally join that big scary gym you’ve been avoiding since the 90’s, but if you’re anything like us you’ll know that these inner promises rarely come to fruition. The possible reason for this is because January is the wrong time of year to fulfil your inner promises; it’s normally far too hot! If you want to finally get healthy and shed kilos: Spring is the time to do it!

Do You Know What You’re Actually Covered For? IMAGE: Cec Balcombe and Nils Jacobs prepare the restored wool table down for its journey to Forbes.
Men’s Shed Puts New Life Into Century-Old Wool Table The Canowindra Men’s Shed had something to celebrate over the weekend. They turned a 100-year-old wool table over to its owner after spending more than a month rebuilding it from a literal pile of old timbers tied with wire. Wool tables are still used in the industry today, proving how well this old method works. Once the shearer has removed it, the fleece of a sheep is thrown, clean side down, onto a wool table by a shed hand. Wool table tops usually consist of slats spaced 12 centimetres apart. This enable locks and other debris to gather beneath the table. Cec Balcombe presented the table to Nils Jacobs to take back to Forbes where he and his wife Sarah will oil it and cover it with a
coloured glass top to become their new dining table. Nils says the table came from the old Neuah Homestead and, while it had fallen to pieces, only two of its 54 rollers on which newly sheared merino wool moved for inspection and trimming had to be replaced. Cec Balcombe says the hardest part of the rebuilding job was “cleaning a quarter-inch of wool grease that had built up on the rollers over the years it was in operation.” Other than that, they left the timbers pretty much the way they were when the table was discovered. Yet another fine working relic of our rural history and another triumph for our Men’s Shed carpenters. By Derek Maitland
Recently Canowindra has had many issues with vandals causing major damage to areas of the town. When I speak to a client the first question asked is ‘what can you afford to lose?” It constantly amazes me that people will always want to protect the small things like glass damage or fusion and yet purposely try to under insure or not insure things like business interruption or buildings. From my time in the insurance world I’m yet to see someone go out of business due to a broken window but I have seen many struggle to get back on their feet due to under insuring. What most people fail to realise is if you do suffer a major claim, it will take months/ years for the business to be rebuilt. Plus even if the building is going to be rebuilt who is going to cover the mortgage, wages, lease payments etc. A business interruption cover will cost a few hundred dollars but is it better to spend $200 on a panel of glass or your business protection. If you would like someone to look over your insurance needs please call Morgan & Chamberlain. By Jim Morgan

Specialising in windscreen and other glass repairs IMAGE: Our Three Judges with the winning cakes
Results Are In For The Cake & Curry Cook-Off! The high standard of entries for the Cake & Curry Cook-Off meant that everyone was a winner at the Deli Lama! The judges felt that every cake and curry had their own merits and each judge had different favourites, but after a lot of tasting and re-tasting (just to be sure) the top prize of a champagne gift basket was awarded to local Ambo, Laura Harrison, for her fantastic apple sour cream cake. “Laura was going to come in early in case anyone collapsed because it was so good!” Tommy joked. The Pre-Schools “Carnival” cake was

League Gets Dressed Up For Mad Monday
The League boys celebrated mad Monday in fancy dress style this week, with hooting and chanting emitting from a bus full of the players as it drove up Gaskill Street in the early afternoon. Superman, the Jamaican bobsled team, Irishmen, Arabs and a Greek God were a few of the characters in attendance. Everyone had a merry time except Matty Mclean, who apparently snuck off half way through festivities, leaving his brothers to power on the drinking session without him. Shame on you, Matty!
Python Award Winners
The stage of the Canowindra Bowling Club was strewn with tankards ready to be claimed at the Python Presentation evening on Saturday. Mick Mathers, the guest speaker, delivered a fantastic speech to the attendees including a rather rude joke about a cowboy and then it was onto award giving. Four Most Games awards were given to Todd Wyburn, Jack Beath, Alex Gavin and Daniel
Bowd for turning up every weekend to play. Ben Schaefer was voted Players Player by his team mates and was also awarded Best Forward. Luke Watt got Best Back and Sean Wyburn received the Coaches Award with Jacob Baker being named Rookie Of The Year. As well as being awarded 750 the Most Games, WORDS Captain Daniel Bowd also took home Best & Fairest and the Strappers Award, making it a hat-trick. Congratulations to every member of the Pythons for their effort this year, to their Coach Adam Nash and to those behind the scenes including treasurer Graham Rice, Doug Rice and Rob Morris and the President Allan “Westy” Wyburn. Also big thanks to Mark “Browny” Brown for being a mentor to all the players throughout the year, to Mick Mathers and Tubby Warboys for attending and to the CWA ladies for all their hard work cooking a lovely meal on Saturday.
