New Mayor Of Cabonne Elected! Yesterday Cr Michael Hayes was elected unopposed as the new Mayor of Cabonne following the retirement of our former Mayor Ian Gosper. The decision went down to the wire as there were no initial nominations for the role until Cr Hayes stepped after being approached by fellow councillors. Cr Hayes said that he wasn’t seeking Mayor status when he was elected to Council two years ago, “I can only hope I live up to the confidence shown in me by my fellow councillors,” the new Mayor said. “I will do my best to continue the excellent work that Cr Gosper has done in the past two years. I stood for Council because I believed it was time to give something back to the community and this is a great opportunity to continue doing that.” Cr Hayes said that he wanted to see Ca-
bonne continue to grow, prosper and retain its unique rural lifestyle. Cr Gosper said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time as Mayor, but after long consideration had decided to spend more time with his family and on his farming business. He said that he was particularly proud of Cabonne’s commitment to spend millions of dollars on maintaining roads while other councils struggle to upgrade them. “We have continued to make roads the major focus of our budgets and we’ve replaced all but three of more than 150 timber bridges” he said. “This means we are well positioned to play a lead role in local government reform in the coming years.” We wish the new Mayor the best of luck.

25th Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival Plans are already in place for this year’s Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom) Festival, which will be held at the Cowra Japanese Garden on Saturday 27th of September. Sakura Matsuri is an event held during the most beautiful season of the year. It is a time when the natural splendour of spring and the simple elegance of traditional Japanese culture combine in the unique Australian setting of the Cowra Japanese Garden. As the name suggests, the family fun day is designed to interest visitors of all ages with a selection of traditional Japanese activities ranging from Tea Ceremony, Origami, and Bonsai demonstrations through to the fast moving excitement of Wadaiko Rindo Taiko Drummers, Karate, Aikido and sumo wrestling! For those choosing to unwind and soak up some culture, there will also be a cocktail evening in the Garden for over 18’s only. Supported by Windowrie Wine, the night will be packed full of entertainment, including performances by Simone Thornett. New Rules For Fishermen! - Changes are washing over NSW fishing from 3rd November 2014. 16 changes to bag and size limits plus gear will apply to recreational saltwater and freshwater fishers. Some of these include catch and release requirement (maximum size limit) introduced for Murray cod caught at more than 80 cm (the current minimum size limit of 60cm remains) and change of marking requirements of recreational nets and traps to specify trap type, fisher’s initial and surname, year of birth and postcode. Fishing is an integral part of the communities across NSW, with more than one million recreational fishers that wet a line each year. Recreational anglers will have time to adjust to the new rules, with an advisory period of three months from the commencement date applying. It’s Show Time! On the 26th and 27th of this month the Canowindra Show will open the gates for its 113th show. The fun kicks off at 4pm on Friday and begins again at 9am on Saturday. A new contest for this year is the Farmer Challenge, where entrants have the chance to win $400 kindly donated by Canowindra Bakehouse. There will also be some Little Miss Showgirls joining their older competitors in the Miss Showgirl categories, proudly sponsored by the Canowindra Phoenix. This makes for a great addition to the competition with Junior and Senior showgirls being announced after Billy Paul opens the show. Top this all off with rides, fair games, pluto pups and fireworks commencing at 8pm and this year’s sure to be a cracker! Schedules will be out by the end of this week but for any more enquiries head down to the show office from 10am weekdays. See you there!

Showgirl’s Show Off Their Talents There was a sprinkling of glamour last Saturday at the Canowindra Showgirl Ball as the Canowindra Showgirl entrants dressed to impress. The Bowling Club was buzzing with excitement with over 150 people present to support the talented young ladies. And even though all the contestants looked stunning, the competition isn’t about beauty, it’s about empowering local young women in rural communities. Kristy White, a previous Showgirl who repre-
sented Canowindra, introduced the evening, speaking of her roles and duties performed throughout the year. The Senior and Junior contestants were then awarded their sashes and Cheryl Newsom interviewed the Seniors. Amy Wythes was first up for questioning. After finishing school, Amy relocated to Queensland as a jillaroo for the Australian Agricultural Company and three years later she has now returned to complete a degree in Animal Science at Wagga University
The second contestant, Ashley Beaton, is 18 and studied agriculture and music at school. After year 12 she began a career in agriculture and works at Moxy’s Dairy. She practises singing in her spare time and hopes to one day have a career as a performer. Demi Grimshaw, contestant number three, is also 18 and has recently returned from Queensland to live in her hometown of Canowindra. She currently works as a chef in the Canowindra Hotel and isn’t quite sure where she wants to steer her career but is open to the hospitality sector. She may soon be performing some gigs in Canowindra as she is a talented musician as well as a cook Ellen Blair was the last of the contestants. She is 20 and currently studying music at TAFE whilst working behind the bar at the Canowindra Services Club to support herself. Ellen recently visited America and has caught the travelling bug, wanting to see more of the world in the future. Two judges were present and the interviews will form part of the overall assessment to choose who will be this year’s Senior Miss Showgirl. The final judging and sashing will take place during the Canowindra Show weekend with the winners receiving a dinner voucher from Kate At 119 Restaurant in Orange and going on to represent Canowindra in the next stage of the competition. You can design a dream bedroom for children in a small space if you know a few tricks. You can create the illusion of a larger space through room layout, paint colours, and multitasking furniture with plenty of storage. Depending on the theme of the bedroom, it could be expensive or affordable. It’s up to you to create a budget that will give your child the bedroom of their dreams. Whilst designing, bear in mind that as he or she grows up, the design of the room will also be altered. A teenager wouldn’t want to sleep in a childish bedroom. So, here are tips in designing that may help you keep the kids happy. 1. To help your children stay organised, keep things at their height. Closet storage, benches and coat racks will all be used more often if kids can get to them easily. Storage areas are important for a child’s bedroom. Allocate different areas for their toys, books and clothes. 2. Make sure that all furniture selected for the space is smaller in scale, according to the size of the room. Less bulky furniture will increase the perceived visual space making it feel open and airier. You can also decorate the ceiling with glow in the dark items. They would enjoy staring at it while they are about to sleep. 3. Removable wall transfers are becoming increasingly affordable and the ranges of patterns are endless. 4. Kids are collectors, so make collecting easy. Pictures and paintings don’t always have to be stuck to a cork board or on the kitchen fridge. Try clipping them to a string along the wall to create an interactive border in a room.
5. Be sure to include multiple kinds of lighting in a child’s room. Overall lighting is a necessity but so is a reading light. It may even help them find the bathroom in the middle of the night. 6. If you are painting a dresser or other furniture you know the child will grow out of be sure to let them help. The child could also put their signature on it with personal handprints or fingerprints for a polka-dot design. 7. A fresh coat of paint is essential in a bedroom makeover. Try a light neutral colour such as soft tones of blues and green, teamed with bright soft furnishings creating the illusion of more space. Keep in mind that soft furnishings can be changed easier than paint as their tastes change. 8. Place educational things in the room. Do not just stick with the design. Be sure also to place things that could aid for their learning like books and toys for education. 9. Use photos for decorating. Make use of pictures of your child’s fondest memories. You can include photos taken while you were on holidays, activities in school, achievements etc. 10. If you have two children sharing, a bunk bed is your best bet for making use of a small space. Look for bunk beds with additional storage underneath, or shelving for keeping clothes organised and within easy reach. 11. In regards to a study desk make sure that your child is seated comfortably and correctly, especially if in front of a screen. Start Your Mowers – With Timely Advice From Steve Brooks It’s that time of the year again when the hand mowers and ride-ons start howling into life, and with the good winter and spring rains we’ve had in the Canowindra region there’s likely to be a lot of grass to cut this summer. This is when Steve Brooks really gets down to business at 190 Gaskill Street as a small engines expert fixing mowers, chainsaws and brush cutters. He’s the man to go to when you pull on the starter cord, pull again, and the infernal machine refuses to play ball. “If you pull the rope more than six times and nothing happens it’s time to get the mower to a mechanic,” he advises. And there are a variety of reasons why a mower won’t start -a spark plug that needs cleaning or replacing or an air filter that’s become clogged with grass and dirt the previous summer. Or there’s water in the fuel, meaning a leaking
carburettor, or you’ve forgotten to check the level of the oil. “Simply cleaning the underside and blades of a four-stroke can mean problems,” Steve advises. “If you tip it up, tip it with the spark plug uppermost to avoid leaking oil into the air cleaner. If you pull the primer plate off to try to fix it yourself, make sure you don’t lose parts out of it.” Steve warns against changing the blades yourself. “The disks that hold the blades have to come off first, and that needs an expert hand. Also, a lot of people will work from the back of the mower to change blades. “The result can be blades that are not fitted properly -- and the litigation that one customer went through because a blade flew off and damaged a neighbour’s fence. Cup of flaked almonds 60ml Honey 20g Butter 400g Snow Peas 2 tspn’s lemon juice
1. Spread almonds over a baking tray and cook under grill for 2 mins until golden. 2. Add honey, butter and lemon juice into a saucepan over medium heat until the butter melts. Add snow peas and toss to coat. Cover and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the snow peas are bright green and tender crisp. 3. Add almonds to mixture & toss to combine.

THANK You Thank you to everyone who helped out on Saturday at the Memorial Service for Chris Noble at the Sports Oval. From setting up the marquees, chairs and tables, to cooking, cleaning, serving food and manning the bar, the whole community pitched in to help the day run smoothly and give Chris the send-off he deserved. Family and friends travelled from far and wide to be there on the day, with well over 1000 in attendance, showing what a popular and loved person Chris was. If there is anything people need to collect from the Rugby Union Clubhouse (plates, containers, eskies etc) it will be open between 5 and 6pm today to come and grab your belongings.

Local Teams Excel At National Titles! From Thursday 11th September to Sunday 14th September, Team Penning Australia held their National Titles right here at the Canowindra Show Ground. The highly successful four days were blessed with blue skies and attended by families from all over Australia competing to gain a qualifying run in the finals last Sunday. On Thursday the Arena Sorting Heat was held, Friday was devoted to Team Penning and Saturday was Team Penning then Arena Sorting with a percentage of the fastest qualifying runs from each day competing in the Sunday Finals. Cowra did well, with Jake Amos, Emily Price and Bianca Amos coming 1st in the Team Penning Opens. The Youth Team Penning and Juniors Team Penning were also won by youths from Cowra. David Wicks, Kelly Wicks and Von Wicks from Tamworth won the Arena Sorting Open with Monique Gillespie, Jake Amos and Daisy Whatman winning the Youths Arena Sorting and Hannah Keen, Kate Price and Laura Price winning the Juniors. A monster raffle was organised by the Team Penning Australia Committee with 16 prizes donated by local businesses. All money raised went to “Give Me 5 For Kids”. For those who missed out on the action this weekend is the Cutting at the Showground. By Rhi Quinn

Hockey Grand Final
Canowindra Services Club Hockey Team was narrowly defeated 3-2 by the Imperial Hotel Cowra team in the Grand Final on Saturday. The game was very close throughout, with 2-2 on the scoreboard at half time, though Canowindra failed to snatch the win despite finishing top of the ladder for the year. The game was followed by a Presentation evening at the Valley Hotel in Cowra where trophies were awarded. Players player went to Linda Kinsela, even though she missed some of the match due to a hospital visit. We hope Linda is feeling better after putting her body on the line for the team! Amara Flannery was awarded Best & Fairest. The team-mates continued their celebrations at the Services Club in Canowindra. Thank you to Canowindra Services Club for sponsoring the team and to all the supporters that turned up to cheer them along. Congratulations to all teams involved!

Only two games of bowls were played last week. In consistency: R Traves def M Baldwin 154-151 in a very tight game coming right down to the last minute. In the O’Brien Cup: K Fisher and M Wright def B Bates and C Webb 33-22. No other games were played due to AGM and other commitments. Under 16’s Soccer Last Saturday Canowindra dominated the Cowra Junior soccer with 4 teams in each division competing in the Grand Final. The Under 16’s had a strong win with 5-0. Scorers where: Lachie, Riley and Brenton who all played a great game. Max played his usual best, feeding balls into the middle for the forwards. Jo shut down the middle and took out some of their best players. John, Ciaran and Lok held a strong defence line, with Mitchell having an outstanding game in the goals. They went into the game with a strong team prepared for a hard match and were surprised by the dominating win. Max received Best and Fairest and John received the Coaches’ Award at the Presentation Ceremony afterwards. The brother sister combo where also showered with more awards as Lachie got best 16-year-old player for the comp and Jo got the Cowra Woman’s Award. The team would also like to thank Kath Balcombe for another great year of coaching. Under 14’s Soccer Wanderers U14’s Soccer Team brought home the win in last Saturdays Grand Final. The team would like to say a big thank you to coach Bruce Austin. It was a close and exciting Grand Final with the team playing really well to come away with a 1-0 win. The other Canowindra teams all played strong coming home with 3 wins and one match having 2 Canowindra teams versing each other. Congratulations to all teams that participated!
