munities gathered together, first to mourn, then to remember and as the years wore on, to commemorate the sacrifice made by so many. Today, over 3,000 memorials stand throughout communities in NSW. Through the Centenary of ANZAC, a four year period of commemoration, we remember and reflect on the young ANZACs who stepped off the boats 100 years ago under a Gallipoli dawn. War has and will continue to touch the lives of all Australians either directly or indirectly, and through this day of remembrance we can continue to shed light on the sacrifices and commitment made by those who hold the security and welfare of a nation ahead of their own. The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them. By Rhi Quinn

Canowindra Remembers

Australia’s involvement in the First World War began on 4th August, 1914. Many who joined believed the war would be a great adventure but could not imagine the magnitude of the endeavour they were to embark on, nor the horrors they might endure. Though many of these soldiers, sailors, airmen and nurses didn’t return to Australia, their courage and sacrifice brought a new maturity to the Australian nation and to New South Wales. NSW provided over 164,000 enlistees in

the Australian Imperial Force. Despite the wording of the Commonwealths Defence Act of 1903 specifically forbidding the enlistment of any persons ‘not of substantially European origin or descent’ it’s estimated that around 550 Aboriginal men enlisted and served and some 200 of these were from NSW. Australian women could only serve overseas if they were nurses or in the Red Cross. In all, 2861 women enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service. During and after the First World War com-

The Wife

IMAGE: Maree Starr with her puppy Gilligan and the photo of Brad with his Aussie flag.

The Mother

Maree Starr’s son, Brad, joined the army at 18 straight after he finished school. “Tommy and I were so proud of him, we thought it was a good idea to get a trade and meet friends. After training he came back very military minded, it was the tidiest I’d ever seen his wardrobe and I wasn’t allowed to iron his shirts anymore!” Brad joined the 3rd battalion RAR Paratroopers, “he loved it, we used to laugh because he’d been in so many planes but never actually landed in one, he always jumped out mid-air! After two years of service Maree received a phone call from Brad saying he was going north. “That’s all he could tell me, I didn’t realise there’d be so much secrecy with communication.” Maree and her husband were invited to a farewell at Holsworthy Barracks, “it felt eerie with the trucks lined up ready to go. Brad told us he was going to Timor and later in the week he rang from the airport saying he’d bought an Aussie flag to take with him. The next morning I opened up the Telegraph and there was a photo of my son with the flag hanging out of his backpack!” “After six weeks we got a phone call saying he was fine. He was in East Timor for 6 months and I’ve never been so pleased to see a boy get off a plane. People would ask how I was and I’d burst into tears, it’s the not knowing that kills you. I don’t understand how mothers got through it in WWI and WWII, they’re the ones to be commended because they just lived on hope.” Brad discharged in 2001 and has recently opened a restaurant on Magnetic Island in Queensland.

Renee is a registered nurse for the Western NSW Local Health District and travels the region educating nurses. She lives in Canowindra with her two young boys Lachlan and Angus. Her husband, Adam Sunderland, is a corporal in the Engineer Corp of the Australian army. “Adam is home as much as he can be when he’s not deployed, training or on disaster relief. He was posted to Brisbane so we moved there but I struggled being away from a small community so I moved back to Canowindra with the kids and Adam’s next posting happened to be in Sydney which worked out well.” “In 2015 he was deployed to Vanuatu to help with rebuilding infrastructure, he’s had one tour of Afghanistan and next week he goes away for 6 months for AACAP [Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Programme]. It’s not so different to the schedules of truck drivers or FIFO workers. Adam’s been posted in Sydney for five years so it’s been quite stable and the kids have a great network of friends, plus family support makes a huge difference.” “We don’t know any different, it’s a way of life for us. Getting deployed adds a bit of stress, we don’t turn the news on in the house and when he’s not home I’m effectively a single parent but we’ve got used to it. There’s no point stressing until something happens. I think it’s harder for him than us being away all the time.”

The Sailor

Kim Roberts joined the navy in 2000 after leaving school. “I was a Boatswains Mate and also did extra training and specialised in survival equipment maintaining and border security. I joined my first ship, the HMAS Nowra, in 2001 and went to Vietnam for a peace keeping exercise. We were the first Australian ship to enter Vietnamese waters since the war.” What was supposed to be a 5 month trip became 9 months after they ran into the Tampa boat, “the boat was full of illegal immigrants so we were told to take them onto our boat and transport them to the Solomon Islands.” Kim also completed three tours of Iraq during her military service; “On the second trip my sister was on the HMAS Newcastle. It was the first time the military had sent all siblings from one family to a warzone since WWII. I think it was more stressful for her as she could hear what was happening over the radio.” “There were times when all communications were turned off for weeks at a time, they just shut you off from the world. I think it was harder for our families as we were kept busy whereas they’re counting down the days.” Kim was medically discharged in 2007 after breaking both legs during a bad landing onto a boat in Iraq, but she says she’d be straight back there if she had a choice; “If I wasn’t broken I’d go straight back. You make friends you never lose, we’re all going on a cruise this year. I’d recommend joining the navy as it allows you to travel the world.” Nowadays Kim works in a saddlery in Orange using the skills she learnt while serving.

Fitness Path Declared Officially Open Sixty people of all ages walked, cycled, hopped, skipped and jumped to the fitness path on Sunday to attend its official opening. Julie Middleton, a member of the working party behind the path, gave a short speech describing the history of the path and how funding had been raised by the Canowindra community through donations and fundraising. “I’d also like to thank the working party members; Marg and Rob Morris, Tracy Lamb, Graham Rice, David Francis, Kath Balcombe, Iana Brown, Bron Newman and Lorrae Barker” Julie said. Canowindra Citizen of the Year, Owen McLaughlan and Young Citizen of the Year, Matt Harrison then cut the green ribbon strung across the path and declared the fitness path officially open! All attendees then walked around the fitness path be-

fore gathering in the middle for an overhead photo. “After six years of work I am thrilled to have reached this stage and have the path declared ‘officially opened’” said Julie; “I believe the path and exercise sites are testament to what a small town can achieve and the generous nature and hard work of not only our working party but many community members who got behind the project wholeheartedly.” Walkers and cyclists were then treated to a healthy fruit and water snack at the amenities block. It was wonderful to see people of all ages, from toddlers to octogenarians, enjoying the path and getting some exercise so don’t be a witness, get into fitness and make use of our fantastic fitness path. Dear Editor, As we celebrate International Guide Dog Day on April 27th, I’d like to thank the members of the public who resist patting, feeding or otherwise distracting working Guide Dogs in harness. These amazing dogs, which cost more than $35,000 to breed, raise and train, assist those who are blind or vision impaired to safely and independently get to where they need to go. Unfortunately, some people in the community continue to distract Guide Dogs. In a recent survey, 89% of Guide Dog handlers reported that their Guide Dog had been distracted by members of the public in the past 12 months. It takes a great deal of concentration for a person who is blind or vision impaired to work safely with a Guide Dog and everyone in the community can do their part to make the daily travels of someone who has a Guide Dog a little easier. People who use Guide Dogs have been

trained in the most effective ways to control their dog’s behaviour, so please only provide assistance if requested. Thank you once again to all those who have been considerate, respectful and mindful of the potential issues caused by distracting a Guide Dog. Sincerely, Dr Graeme White CEO, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT

OUR Gal Julie Fliedner How long have you lived in Canowindra? 12 and a half years. I used to live in Campbelltown but moved here after meeting my husband. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer town to raise my kids. Where do you work? I’ve been the office manager at the Canowindra Services Club for four and a half years. Before that I had management roles in cafes in Sydney, an army barracks and a nightclub.

Catch of the Week: Alexander Rice caught a trout at Lake Eucumbeme in the Snowy Mountains over the weekend. The trout fed the whole family and was reported to taste great. Good fishing, Alexander!

Well Done Josh: Congratulations to Joshua Randell for coming fourth at his second ever team yarding event which was held at Wagga Wagga last Saturday. Keep up the fabulous riding. Western Plains Taronga Zoo Ticket Winner! Congratulations Regina Britt, you’ve won a family pass to the zoo to enjoy over the school holidays. Have a wonderful time meeting lots of new furry, feathery and scaly friends. Jazz At All Saints’ Church: The Sydney Conservatorium of Music’s David Miller, along with five top students will be bringing music to Canowindra on 7th May at 2pm. This year promises to have something for everyone with jazz standards, original compositions and contemporary pieces from American and European jazz musicians played on the oboe, bassoon, drums, double bass and stunning Collard & Collard concert grand piano. Tickets are $30 ($20 concession) and can be purchased online at www.canowindra.org.au or at The

Swimming Star: Lachlan Rice won bronze in the under eights 50m freestyle at the Catholic School State Swimming Championships a fortnight ago. Lachlan had a personal best of 42.38 seconds which is eight seconds faster than his time at the Canowindra Swimming Club Carnival at the beginning of the year. During the first heat another swimmer came away with exactly the same time, resulting in a tense swim off finale. The whole carnival stopped as both kids swam in front of a few thousand people. Unfortunately Lachlan couldn’t beat his opponent but everyone is very proud of how much he has improved.

IMAGE: Well done Lachie!

What do you like to do in your spare time? Go camping with the family. What makes you laugh? My kids! What’s your worst habit? Procrastinating. How do you like your coffee? Non-existent, I’m a tea drinker. If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be? Mauritius, I’ve always wanted to go there it looks beautiful. How do you start your day? With a cup of tea and a bit of peace, once the kids get up it’s crazy!
