Canowindra Produce Celebrate 25 Years Of Business Knowledge

Turners Vineyard in Orange was the venue of choice for the 2016 Central West Orana Business Awards gala dinner on Friday. The glamourous evening, hosted by the NSW Business Chamber, saw business people from across the Central West attend in the hope of being announced winner of their category. Though not nominated for an award, Canowindra Produce was given a special acknowledgement for 25 years of association with the Chamber. Mark Brown was in attendance representing Canowindra Produce and accepted the gift for this significant milestone. “We’ve found the NSW Business Chamber really helpful for information such as rates of pay, wages, legal advice and all the things you struggle to find in a small town. They’ve been fantastic”

said Mark; “It’s nice to be acknowledged for something, that’s quite rare this day and age.” The big scoop of the night came from Dubbo business, Transforce, who was named the 2016 Central West Orana Business of the Year. Transforce, who specialise in road transport services, also won the award for Excellence in Business. “Central West Orana NSW Business Chamber Regional Manager, Vicki Seccombe, congratulated all the businesses who were nominated; “This year’s winners should feel incredibly proud to be named as the region’s leading businesses for 2016, and we wish them every success as they continue to represent the Central West, Orana and Far West at the NSW Business Chamber State Business Awards later this year.”

Dear Editor, What a discourse. Let me first say that, in my commercial life, some of the maddest people I had to deal with were psychiatrists. Be that as it may, the tenor of the letter in question is paramount. Point by point; • The Peter principle applied to office holders in all disciplines, not just public office. • Agreed. The ‘Public Service’ pulls the strings. One eponymous pollie in WA, a very good Police Minister, admitted to me that she was almost powerless in the face of the ‘Public Service’ when she was Minister. • In private enterprise, how can the owner and principal take ‘redundancy’, isn’t that selling the business, perhaps to the detriment of the employee • In private enterprise aren’t the progenitors (the owner) the smartest and best? • Kicking the man down, even though he gave us a trade advantage over other operators which must be acknowledged

THUMBS UP THUMBS DOWN THUMBS UP To a kind Samaritan. A lady in a maroon car found my cousin and her husband looking for my house in Suttle street. I live on Sutton street so the lady picked them up and drove them to where I lived. Thank you!

THUMBS UP To Tommy Jeff’s for his wonderful Mothers Day lunch.

THUMBS UP Many thanks to the person who retrieved and returned the bezel off my falcon ute. Many thanks - Earnie. THUMBS DOWN To the local caravan caretaker who had his son sitting on the cutting deck of the ride on lawnmower and was watched by a group of horrified men Warwick

in farming enterprises. • Keating and Hawke signed off on many ‘foreign powers’ to the extent that Australia must now succumb to Brussels’ decisions. • The TPA is probably the best foil to a surging ASEAN group who could control our offshore trade without us having such wider agreements? • So called ‘independents’ ever were a thorn in the side of organised politics from the Roman Senate forward to now. They have their place in disruption of progressive politics by objecting to everything outside their narrow focus and give us a reason to dislike them. Green becomes Brown! • As for the ‘drongos’’ in the high court, they gave us Marbo when the Murray Islands and their people are Melanesian and Polynesian populated and carried a different acquisitive culture to mainland Australian aboriginals who were principally hunters and gatherers moving about the country as seasons dictated. To then overlay that culture across the mainland Australia was madness. • Tony Windsor would not be happy to hear that you disdained his tilt against the last funny pollie as being a “I don’t trust independents to actually be independent”. Have a nice day, Bob Sherwood

Railway Renovations

IMAGE: Geoff Yeo with Tiffany Hart, Andrew Graham & Tim Cullenward, Directors and Partners from Peacockes Dubbo.

Peacockes Solicitors Open For Business

Friends, supporters, and members of the local business community attended the official opening of Peacockes Solicitors in Canowindra on Friday the 6th May. Local business man and solicitor, Geoff Yeo, was warmly welcomed by the partners of Peacockes Solicitors in Dubbo. Andrew Graham, Tiffany Hart and Tim Cullenward extended their welcome and good wishes to Geoff and wife, Jackie, with Andrew assuring the community that he has total confidence in Geoff. Geoff, who owns and operates Finn’s Store with his wife Jackie, remarked that until now, Canowindra has had no resident solicitor for approximately five years. His aspiration for Peacockes Solicitors Canowindra is to “be a viable legal presence in Canowindra and to work full-time, and eventually grow the business.” This is good news for local residents, who will now have access to the years of experience and expertise that Peacockes offer, right at their doorstep. Among the well-wishers were Mayor Ian

Rural

Gosper and local counsellor Kevin Walker. Both men are encouraged by the opening of Peacockes Solicitors Canowindra, with Mayor Gosper remarking; “This is not only another new business for Cabonne, but it will save people having to travel. We try and attract people to our area and it’s great to see the Yeo’s doing this.” Caddie Marshall, the President of Canowindra Business Chamber performed the official opening, telling the crowd, “We need a good, solid, well considered, legal advisor in town, someone who knows our needs and can take that into consideration when offering advice. We need access to a wonderful man who’s well-considered and acts with integrity to represent us.” The opening night was a success, with a champagne toast and delicious nibbles. Finn’s Store was well attended with guests being encouraged to inspect Geoff’s new office. In good humoured style he teased, “Have a look at my office now, as from now on you’ll be charged!” By Annelise Stephenson

Dylan Gower and Arthur Falconer are calling for any locals interested in cleaning up Canowindra’s old railway. The area they would be targeting is the rail precinct past the Age of Fishes Museum, with the aim to progressively convert the area to a park and get the buildings in a suitable condition to allow community use. “The students from UNSW did a great job on concept plans which should be the basis for future discussion and planning” said Arthur; “We have created a Facebook page, ‘Canowindra Railway Park’ and are looking for interested locals to like the page, join us in discussions and help in any way they can.” Cabonne Council have expressed their interest in the project and the duo have full support of the John Holland Group who manage the area for the NSW railways. Arthur says that their objective is not to resurrect the rail nor to make it a rail history museum. “We want to make it a public, community area sympathetic with its history and renovate and preserve any rail infrastructure that is not beyond repair” said Arthur. If you would like to get involved or know more please call Arthur on 0408 416 034.

Winter Warmers Stay Snug With Kilby’s

When the weather outside is frightful, nothing quite says cosy like a log fire crackling away while you snuggle under a warm blanket and read your favourite book, sipping on a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Kilby’s may not be able to supply the book, the blanket or the mug but they can definitely help out when it comes to fires. This May, the team at Kilby’s Heating and Cooling are offering customers a red hot deal, purchase selected Masport and Osburn wood heaters before the end of the month and you can receive a free Morphy Richards pack valued at $500! So what is Masport and Osburn you may ask? They specialise in free standing, inbuilt, potbellies, radiant and convection heaters ideal for indoor or outdoor use. Kilby’s have a huge range of brands available to view in the show room including; Masport, Regency, Nectre and Eureka which are both Australian made, Jotul, Kent and of course Osburn, not to mention many others that they can supply. Why buy a wood fire? • Wood is a carbon neutral product. Unlike other fuels, burning wood generates no more carbon dioxide (CO2) than if it was left to decompose naturally. • A wood fire is an energy efficient way of heating. They are designed to heat your entire house. • A wood fire is also a multi-purpose fire. Apart from being your primary heat source it can be used in line with a heat transfer/ ventilation system. • It is a smart and cost effective method of heating. Running a wood fire is one of the cheapest forms of heating. • Wood is a renewable energy source, therefore making it a sound environmental choice.

If you choose to purchase a brand new heater to help keep your family warm this winter, you can also reap the rewards of your free Morphy Richards pack. Morphy Richards is a premium small appliance brand committed to providing high quality products such as kettles, slow cookers, toasters and blenders. So get the kettle on and get down to Kilby’s at 8 Redfern Street.

It’s important to keep yourself healthy and happy throughout the year, and as winter approaches and the days and nights begin to cool, flu tends to rear its ugly head leaving us wallowing on our sofas amidst a mountain of tissues. Therefore, all those eligible are being encouraged to ring and book an appointment to get themselves vaccinated. What is the flu? Influenza is a viral infection caused by influenza virus types A, B and C. The virus can be transmitted by coughing, sneezing or direct contact with respiratory secretions (otherwise known as snot, lovely!) Influenza vaccines will not give you the flu as vaccines available in Australia do not contain ‘live’ virus. After a person has had their vaccination, they will begin to develop antibody levels that are likely to protect them against the strains represented in the vaccine. So why should you get vaccinated against the flu every year? There are two main reasons for getting a yearly flu vaccine; flu viruses frequently change so vaccines are often updated from one season to the next to protect against the most recent and common circulating strains and a person’s immune protection from the influenza vaccination declines over the time, meaning annual vaccination is recommended.

Each year the World Health Organisation (WHO) put forward its recommendations for the composition of influenza virus for the Southern Hemisphere flu season. The Australian Government is set to announce the adoption of the Quadrivalent vaccine for the national program for 2016. This is the first year that government has moved to a Quadrivalent vaccine and is part of their effort to provide the greatest amount of protection for those at risk during the flu season. The Quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four strains of flu, may possibly phase out the current Trivalent vaccine which protects against three strains. Quadrivalent should be considered if you are one of the high risks groups, intend to travel overseas or have a chronic condition that causes you to be at greater risk of infections. Australian vaccine services use only the latest flu vaccination strains which are produced and provided by pharmaceutical companies authorised to provide vaccines in Australia. People who are eligible for the flu vaccination include children 6 months and over with medical risk conditions such as asthma, aboriginal children 6 months to 5 years, aboriginals 15 years and over, pregnant women and people 65 years and over. If you do not fall into one of these categories but still wish to have the vaccine, your local health care provider will be able to walk you through your options.

How long have you lived in Canowindra? We moved here at the beginning of February this year. What made you decide to move here? The people! Great sense of community, affordable housing, and enough services. Where do you work? I’m the new editor for the Forbes Phoenix. What is your background? I’m a writer. What makes you laugh? My daughter’s dry sense of humour. She makes me laugh like no one else can. What’s your worst habit? I stress ridiculously, and often unnecessarily. What’s your life motto? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. I really live by that. Unkindness is unnecessary. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where and why? I’ve travelled extensively, but never to Europe. My husband and I are planning a European River Cruise - one day! How do you like your coffee? I don’t. I drink boiling water with fresh ginger and lemon. What do you like to do in your spare time? Write books and study. I’m finishing off my Master in Writing and never seem to have enough time.

A Great Fete

Stacey’s Singing School started the morning off musically at the annual Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre Fete on Saturday. Hundreds of people were in attendance with more being brought out thanks to the gorgeous weather. “Everyone is enthusiastic and happy and has been very generous” said Moyne team member Melissa Delaney; “We’d like to sincerely thank all who have donated and participated in some way. The clothing stall has been a big hit this year and is in competition with the veggies and cakes, but healthy competition never goes astray!” The event included performances from

COMMUNITY NOTICES

dance troupe, Alikinetic and music from the Orange Salvation Army Band and was a great chance for Moyne residents to mingle with the rest of the community. “I’d also like to personally thank Bruce Wright, who organised the vegetable stall. The vegetables were donated by local farmers. And the Canowindra Lions Club who do a wonderful job as always. We couldn’t have done it without you all” said Melissa. Bruce’s veggie stall included humungous pumpkins, cabbages and kale for bargain prices. The money raised from the day will go towards leisure resources and the residents are already thinking of what to spend it on!

The federal election has been announced so make sure you act quickly to ensure you’re enrolled by the deadline of 8pm on 23rd May. Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the 2nd July federal election. “Enrolling and voting is compulsory. If you are not enrolled, you can’t vote in the 2016 federal election,” Mr Rogers said. “You can enrol conveniently online at aec.gov.au on your computer, tablet or smartphone.” Mr Rogers also urged all Australians, especially those who have moved in the last three years, to immediately check that their details were up to date on the electoral roll. “If you’re not sure that you are correctly enrolled to vote, go to aec.gov.au/check or, if you need help, call us on 13 23 26.” “If you’re on the roll but have moved since the last election, or changed your name, you need to update your enrolment details online at aec.gov.au” Australians unable to go online can pick up a paper enrolment form at any AEC office or Australia Post outlet, however, correctly completed applications must be returned to the AEC by the 8pm 23rd May deadline. Seventeen-yearold Australians turning eighteen years of age on or before 2nd July 2016 should also enrol and vote in the federal election.

Proud To Be Part Of The CWA

Country Women’s Association groups from around Australia journeyed to Cowra Showground Pavilion last week for their annual State Conference. Over 600 ladies attended the conference, with more than 30 groups representing various branches

of the CWA including the Nepean Group from Parramatta, the Canberra Branch, Hunter River, Ballina and the Gwydir Group who were based half an hour from Queensland. One topic up for discussion included a medical research project for 2017 on

Thursday 12 May 2016 Page 11 Lyme disease, which the CWA has already collectively donated $35,000 towards. There were also two guest speakers, one of which was Jessica Jones who was described as being ‘particularly good’. Jennifer spoke of CWA branches that were opened to encourage Aboriginal women to participate, improve their living conditions and give them confidence. After the conference a mixed group of members travelled to Canowindra to enjoy an afternoon high tea complete with dainty cakes at Montrose House hosted by the Canowindra CWA before exploring the Age of Fishes Museum. When asked what they enjoyed about the day a lady from the Nepean branch said; “I thought it was a really good conference. We got through some important issues and no blood was spilt! I learnt about B12 and how it can help improve symptoms of dementia, I work with people with Alzheimer’s so that was particularly interesting to me.” Another lady sensibly remarked, “the venue was great, the toilets were clean, these are all important things!” President of the Canowindra CWA, Bev Taylor, was pleased with how the day went, “it’s been lovely and we’d like to thank Tommy for kindly letting us have tea at Montrose House.” The overall consensus from the day was of how articulate CWA ladies are to discuss subjects with such vigour and how proud each of them are to be a CWA member.

B Lees v R Traves, Marker B Webb. Saturday 15th May is Fuzz Thompson Memorial Day. Please get your teams together if you haven’t already done so and nominate for this special day. PYTHO NETTIE

Following on from last week’s news the Net Set Go programme, developed for 5-8 year old girls, is now up and running at Canowindra Oval. The programme has been running every Friday while the boys go to Walla rugby. “We’d like to thank the

Cowra Netball Association for helping us to start up and for supplying us with some netballs” said Mandy, one of the co-ordinators of the programme; “We also appreciate the Canowindra Pythons kind donation of 4 portable goal posts and Lorrae Barkers donation of coaching equipment.” If anyone would like to join in the fun look up PythoNettie on Facebook to find registration details or call Mandy on 0417 474 925.

WOMEN’S BOWLS

The inaugural yearly Shirley Robson Challenge Trophy (kindly donated by Heather Hoad) to be competed for by the small clubs was held on Thursday 5th May. 14 teams participated, 7 Canowindra teams and 7 visiting teams which included Orange Newstead, Molong, Manildra, Millthorpe, Blayney, Parkes Railway Diggers & Forbes. The Trophy winners were Canobolas District small clubs. Congratulations! The raffles were won by Myrna O’Leary (Millthorpe) and Jean Roth (Canowindra) and the 100 club by Liz Thornberry (P.R.D.) and Betty Jenkins. All agreed it was a very enjoyable day played in great weather.

There were two teams representing our club at the Forbes Mini Carnival held on Saturday 7th May. Joyce Middleton, Jenny Middleton, Daph Bryant and Gwen Haydon made up one team and Dorcas Presnal (Cowra), Nancy Morrow, Libby Balcombe and Heather Hoad made up the other. No trophies were won but they all enjoyed their day. There were three games of social bowls played on Tuesday 10th May, one triples and two pairs. Jill Messenger and Heather Hoad defeated Jo Davies and Sheryn O’Malveney 15-10. Radka Tatterson and Deanna Noble defeated Daph Bryant and Ellen Petty 19-15. Diane Slattery and Margaret Gosper defeated Shirley Robson, Libby Balcombe and Nancy Morrow. Diane played lead and second. The Lucky Draw was won by Jo Davies with No. 17. A very sincere welcome to the newest member of the club, Jo Davies, who has transferred from Cowra. Everyone at Canowindra Bowling Club hopes you will be very happy as a member, you make the total 34 members. It is also Jo’s birthday on 23rd May, a very happy birthday Jo!
