Cowra Public School NEWS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NSW Department of Education and Communities

Dear Parents On Friday, 6 June our Stage 3 children travelled to the Bathurst Goldfields and tried their luck to strike it rich. In what was a wonderful excursion the children returned with a greater appreciation of the effort involved in panning for gold and working and surviving in the days of the gold rush. Thank you goes again to the children who represented the school to the highest level, which highlights our strong expectations of our students in accordance with our PBL philosophy. By the look on the children's, parents’ and teachers’ faces on Tuesday it seems everyone enjoyed having the extra day as part of the long weekend. Many parents commented that they enjoyed having the mid-term break with their children to do some activities that usually can’t be tackled in a regular weekend. The school has been proceeding very well during our reporting period with the process well underway. Reports will go home in the last week on Tuesday, 24 June. This will allow parents time to read the report and speak to their child’s class teacher if necessary, prior to the end of term. As I read each student’s report, I am very impressed with the tremendous growth of our children and their progress during the year. One thing that I have been delighted to read is the outstanding comments about our Kindergarten students, they are really moving forward. On Tuesday, while speaking with the Infants group, I commented on the change in the Kindergarten students from their first few days at the school as they are all so much taller, but also so confident in their own ability.

runners across country NSW and two of our students placed in the top 6 for their age. Eliza Mulligan and Ella Meeuwisse both gained selection in the Western Region team that will now travel and compete in Sydney next term. Well done to all of our children and good luck girls.

On Wednesday, 18 June the school will be holding the second adventure day of the year. Students involved will receive a note today. The excursion is based on the criteria of work effort and attendance. At this point the school has involved close to 100 students in the Adventure Club.

Next week the school will be involved in the University of NSW writing and spelling exams. Many students are taking the opportunity to participate in these activities and we are very confident of a strong showing from our students.

Have a great week.

The P&C will be holding the monthly meeting next Thursday, 19 June starting at 6pm. I encourage all interested parents and careers to come along.

Western Region Representatives at State Cross Country

Our school attendance data has been very favourable with strong results across the grades. Interestingly the NSW Education Department have released some surprising facts about attendance stating that if a child has 1 day off a week for a term this equates to almost a term missed by the end of the year. If this is continued through Primary school it equates to a year lost. Attendance is so important to the success of any child, that Cowra Public School congratulates parents who instil the value of education in their children.

STAGE 3 EXCURSION TO BATHURST GOLDFIELDS On Friday, 6 June all Stage 3 children went by bus to Bathurst Goldfields. When we got there we were greeted by a lady and two gentlemen. They gave us instructions about how the day would run. We sat down on the grass to eat our recess then off we went to see the poppet head machinery then on to see the Chinese Temple. It was called the Temple of Peace. Inside the temple some children were able to try on Chinese hats that Chinese people brought out from China. They were really hard and quite big. These hats would protect the workers from the hot sun. We also saw the tents that the miners lived in. They were made out of canvas and wood. They did not have any doors! Some children used a machine that helped to bring the water up from under the ground. It was hard work to keep on pushing the arms but lots of water came up and went into the ponds where we panned for gold. We went to the Blacksmith’s shop where our guide, Peter, made a fire poker. Some of the children had to use their muscles to pump the bellows to keep air coming into the fire so the temperature remained hot. Last but not least, we all had time to pan for gold. Most of the students found at least some tiny specks of gold or else something interesting. We loved the excursion and had a fantastic time. We want to thank all the workers at the Goldfields and all the teachers who came with us. By: Connor Charnock, Gregory Leatherland and Lachlan Stuhlfauth. (H2-3)
